Pretty average episode apart from a great quote of the day; ‘Mott is a huge pot smoker!’

Sasha! 75% the rest is Gary and Mott.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

I believe I am in the process of that!

  • liko sf

    Colin: Nice love for Mott.

QOTD: Port or banyuls or madeira. Only once in a while with gateau victoire (chocolate flourless cake) ala Zuni Cafe.

  • leapinggnome

Who's complaining about the guests? I love the guests. I prefer the wine geeks because I've seen enough of the “ordinary Joes” – guys who love wine but know very little – because I seen one every day when I look in the mirror.

And yes, we all love Gary but Mott rules!

  • larbear

Loved the ending “And Allot of Mott” I enjoy several good ports and late harvest Zinns with a good cigar. RIGHT NOW I am drinking the 2007 Vayniac Cabernet. I really really like like this wine. Can easily become a favorite that I will open up now and then.

  • WLTV: 50/50 GV to Mott ratio…

QOTD: Clavados, we keep some for cocktails around a fire in winter.

  • larbear

Uh OO, now were gettin spell checked. Wayno da wino is going to hear from yoouu

  • larbear

Hey, Cubatobaco, I knew you were going to chime in on this show. How can we get these guys to understand what they are missing. Maybe we can do a show on a wine paring with our favorite cigar.

  • larbear

Cuba Baby – I didn't know. BTW I really like the Padron 1926 Serie 9 with port. The Gurhka platinum series goes with Louie XVII (I I have explained before)

as much as i love port and cigars, my favorite pairing is a nice cigar with a great cognac or armagnac.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

We should make GV do a show strictly on wine/cigar pairing. I have no problem supplying the cigars. I think it would bring out a lot of lurkers as well. I don't believe there is another product that requires as much concentration on the palate, outside of vino, than cigars.

Gary, you hit a major “home run” with this show. You captured virtually the the entire essence of vintage port with your comments, not the least of which was the fact that the 1991 was really good and old enough to understand what Port is all about.

Coincidentally, the QOTD totally dovetails into old vintage Port being my number one choice of wines that I enjoy and look forward to maybe two or three times a year. I enjoy it with blue cheese and maybe some grapes, but have learned not to try to pair it with typical desserts that almost never deliver the same match as blue cheese. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to acquire quite a bit of vintage port from most of the years you mentioned: 1963, 1977,1983, 1991,1992, and 1994. These were among the smartest decisions and best buys I have ever made in my wine collection.

    Great show!

  • Steve_r_vb

cigars and wine are in fact the ultimate pairing. nothing beats a cigar playing perfectly off a cigar.

  • Steve_r_vb

i second that as long as he has some cigar smokers on the program. cubatobaco and i will be there in july. i'm just saying.

  • Jay

Hahaha such a cool episode!! Great guest, loved the Mott props πŸ˜€

See, I don’t even bother with wine when smoking cigars. I only drink Russian Imperial Stouts that can stand up to cigars. My preferred beverage is Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout. The Cigar struggles to stand up to the beer! It just happens to be the greatest beer in the world and at the same time an amazing cigar beer.

  • Finally can watch on my iPad!! Clearly pre-taped cuz no props for the amazing winecrazy!! Come on new media guy πŸ˜‰

QOTD: Met Mott @500 and he told me his dirty little secret. Going to have to give the nod to Gary. Champagne is always on hand. Love the bubbles in so many ways.

  • Good point!! Didn't think of the stiffer stuff, 30 year Cognac always on hand.

  • ONUMello

miniQOTD: gotta say 50/50, haha. It's GV's show, yes, but the whole dynamic would change without Mott!
QOTD: 100% tempranillo- always a good value and I rarely find one that's bad, making it a nice trustworthy go-to wine for anytime.

  • Fantastic…I've got a bottle of Dow's '85 waiting to be unleashed after a porterhouse with gorgonzola melted over the top with a nice Rioja…segway to the beauty from Portugal & of course, a great cigar…& something dark chocolate!

  • Gary I have been truly enjoying all the guests this week, very fun. Always educational.

Question of the week, Colin, I am at the very beginning of learning about wine, however, so far I do know that in the future I will only drink red wines on occasion. I am really into crispy and fresh white wines.

  • ilbee

Nice ep! the perfect guest for a laidback friday.

QOTD: Can't really pick one, sometimes it's a good dark weizen bock, sometimes it's some nice wine&cheese pairing and sometimes it's champagne. Although it's not champagne as often as I would like πŸ˜€

  • pian0_player

Calvados is fun. I love brandy in all its forms (as long as its good : )

I’m sure he wasn’t the greatest of all time. And I haven’t smoked a whole lot of cubans, but I still don’t buy into cubans being the best in the world. The got serious competition from Nicaragua and Dominican. I got most of my Cubans from Canada, but many have been straight out of cuba. I live next to the largest army base in the western world and have had plenty of coworkers do tours in Guantanamo. Its amazing how easy great cigar products slip through the fences there.

  • YoungDave

Should I even TOUCH upon the “Mott-GV” question? I'd better not… MOTT! *(Mott's name mentioned here for rhyming purposes only, not to take sides)*

QOTD: I don't drink sparklers all the time, but I MUST have at least one bottle of sparkling wine in the fridge just in case I need something that I know I will love by myself, or with friends. Cremant d'Alsace, Cremant de Bourgogne, Cremant du Jura, Cremant de Limoux, Cava (sometimes), *Franciacorta, or good-ol' Champagne (if I feel like forking over the cash). I GOTTA have a bottle of Champagne-method sparkling wine on hand in case I need to just sit back and enjoy after a long day, or to pair with food, or as an aperitif, the stuff is just so complex, drinkable, and enjoyable for me at all price points. Cheers.

  • BenBurch

    This is so true.

    Therrrrrzzzzzz enough “………..” for everybody……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  • Randall

    πŸ˜€ That’s so true!!

  • Colin great tag team ending. I like the guest shows.
    QOTD; Port.

  • Great show guys, I am a huge port fan, I need to check out your selection when I visit Wine Library…I need to stock up.

    QOTD: Mott 99, Gary 1 πŸ˜‰

  • amsgpwarrior

Yea, but I believe coffee isn't far behind when it comes to concentration of the palate. Truthfully I rather drink good coffee with cigars than port, sherry, cognac, or any other alcohol product. What do you say?

  • winecrazy

I quit High School so I have no clue how to spell S***…….well…S*** I can spell, but some of these descriptive words like……well, I don't know how to spell them….lol

  • winecrazy

Oh I knw that…..I learned that thee hard way…… WAAAAAYNO!!!!!!

  • waynooo

Yeeeaaah Bro, It's NOOOT like we gotta be
    Rocket Scientists around here…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Good show. 80%/15%/5% GV/Mott/Sasha V. Sasha's performance in the 2007 Napa Valley episode catapulted it to the top of my favorites list, that is until the 2004 Brunello show came about:

“Show me your finest silk! – and they brought it out, and you were like 'excuse me', and you brought it over here, and you licked it, THAT is what this tastes like.” — cracks me up everytime.

Pumped for Port because i have got a 6 pack of 2007 Dows (WS100) that i look forward to drinking xmas eves sometime in the 2020's or 2030's.

QOTD: High-End Cali Cab. Would drink it all the time but too expensive and if you drank it all the time you wouldnt get that “made it back home after a long trip away” reaction that you do when you crack a Silver Oak Napa or a bottle of Caymus. Its fun to explore different wines (lately my palate took a 180 and revolted against malbec so im drinking mostly Barolos), but there is nothing like a delicious Napa Cab w/ a steak to remind me why i got into wine in the first place.

  • fitfortwotv

    Hey Colin!

Gary is the reason we use Viddler for our site: http://fitfortwo.tv

QOTD: Coyote's Run Bob Izumi Red (preferably 2005)
    Gary's Side Q: 50/50
It's like a great pitcher-catcher combo. It's awesome to have a pitcher who can throw in the high 90's. But you need a great catcher to know when to call for the slider.
The real question is: Who is the catcher and who is the pitcher?

  • winecrazy

Great show!!!!!! So Mott's a Cuban Guy huh……who knew!!!??!?!?!??!

I wish I would have known that Mott I would have brought you some nice #2 Monti's on Monday. I'll bring you some next time I come in.

QOTD: I like to keep a bottle of D'quem around….but I can't because althought I want to have it around for that certain time……it seems that certain time happens when I get it home…LOL

Side QOTD: 60/40…….because you know Gary can't have the lower percentage of anything… πŸ˜‰ But in reality it's All GV….Mott is the Major contributing factor. Now that I know he smokes cigars he's gonna have to deal with me wanting to take him outside for a short one when I go to the WL. Get ready Mott…Monti #5's are perfect for a 20 min brake from filming…..lol

  • philoxera

    QOTD1: 90% Mott, 10% the noisey guy
    QOTD2: Sherry

  • Illegal_Formation

Gary and Mott are a team, it can't be quantified. Sometimes I wish Mott were mic'd. My crappy computer speakers don't always pick up his witty retorts.

Good QOTD. I will say sparkling. I have to be in the mood. It's a good go-to drink in the morning.

  • corkscrew

Winecrazy, Hey you made it to the top of the WLTV mountain with your apprearance, so who gives a sh$t if you can't spell. Will you be out East for 7/10 at WL? http://www.winelx.com
