QOTD: A few years ago I went to the Eiffel Tower Restaurant with a girlfriend of mine. We ordered a bottle of Oriel Chateauneuf-Du-Pape for around $130. When I got back home from our trip I looked up the wholesale cost (I worked at a wine store) and discovered that it retailed for around $35. I was a little pissed about that one. But I guess that it was the experience that we were paying for. The wine wasn’t half bad, just not worth $130.

  • QOTD: I’m a huge fan of Grenache, in fact so much so that I just planted one row of 15 vines of the Alban clone in by backyard. My consultant says we should be able to make roughly 5 gal. of rose. Here’s a link to some photos http://www.facebook.com/SantaBarbaraWineTours#!/album.php?aid=224511&id=372846829615 . I also recently had the experience of an 06′ Beckmen PMV Grenache that was stellar. Chocolate lovers lineup.

SQOTD: I never played. My friends did a lot though, I mostly just watched them.

QOTD: I never tried “Bitch” Granache because the packaging and name looked too flashy. It was given to me as a gift and I was plesently surprised. The delicious factor was definitely there and it brought some smoothness to the table.

  • Allan

Agreed on Grenache G. Makes stunning things in the Rhone Valley…

Puff makes an appearance, Great, missed that dragon…

Great Show Gary. I liked it. You should get those dancin' bags 🙂

Gotta love those keys on the bottles!!!

    sideQotd: ?
Qotd: It's a great little grape, what can i say? I love it! The Rhone Valley RULES still!!

Thanks for another great episode Gary

  • plcb

I love brown bag episodes and I love grenache/garnacha. It's Friday and I may decide to have some this weekend?!

    side QOTD: ?
QOTD: I'm a grenache/garnacha fan with wines from Rhone and Spain as my favorites. I can't afford CdP but I love all of the other Rhone wines that have >50% grenache and $11.99-$25.00. As for Spain, wow, value garnacha is perfect on a thrifty budget. Years ago the Tres Picos was under $10 and recently I've seen it at $16.99, ouch. For $9.99 I may try Crus di Piedra Garnacha 2007 or Evodia Garnacha 2008.

I’ll be checking that with Chris on Monday :-p

i love CDP grenache. Really like the black pepper and fruit combo. Great show Gary.
QOTD: Friend of mine sold me a case of 1994 Les Closiers CDP Caves des papes for about $70 ( $6 / bottle) he had 12 cases. that was about 10 years ago. At that time I don't know anything about CDP. thanks to him i had a chance to try and enjoyed them. I just love that leather, spicy, fruit combo and Grenache grapes too. after that I learn a lot about CDP and it's price too.

  • johnfarrin

Love the brown bags. TQOTD1: Soda Popinski was my favorite. I got to Tyson about 20 times, but never won the game. 20 years later, that still frustrates me…thanks for rubbing salt in the wounds 🙂

  • johnfarrin

QOTD: Well, I was born here and I like French Grenache way better. For me, New World grenache is too bombastic. I remember buying a three pack of the Meyers McPrice from WL and thinking that, while there was nothing wrong with it, it was just a little too over the top for my palate. My daughter, on the other hand, really liked it so I'm sure it's just a personal preference thing.

  • Grenache can get fruit bomb-y on it's own, although it is almost always quaffable…blends are the key to elevating it.
    Have a great weekend all!

sideQOTD: sad, but I always enjoyed blowing past the guy with the glass-jaw.

QOTD: slipping a $6 bottle of Borsao Garnacha to someone who “only really loves CA reds”…and hearing them gush about how good it was.

  • I watched this ep from my laid-back couch

  • BrettFavre

I'd have to say I like that Hippo guy the best on Tyson. Weren't there two guys with the same graphic, they just had different names? How cheap was that??

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • onewino

Great Show!!! I am a huge fan of Outpost and TRB. I have not tried that 07 but drank alot of the 06 Grenache, very good.

  • I don't mind since I'm 6 hours ahead

  • Just Jack

Good episode. Just a good basic wine show with a little twist from the b squared.

QOTD 1: I hated Bald Bull. For some reason I just couldn't beat that big son of a bitch.

  • Soda Popinski

  • orangebottle

Glad that someone is doing it…..

  • Grenache and Riesling are two must haves in the Miller house.

  • Don't look at me like that! 😀

QOTD: Garnacha, Grenache I think of fruit and licorice. The first wine that really hit me was a 1976 CDP that I bought for dinner in a fancy restaurant back in 1980. Me and a friend tried to impress two girls with wine and dine. The sommelier at the restaurant recommended it and it was an eye opener for me.Red wine could be good and complement food in unparalleled way Didn't get me anywhere with the ladies but today that doesn't matter 🙂

Side QOTD: I never watched boxing.

  • philoxera

QOTD: VDN s from south east France..grenache hmmmmm!

  • philoxera

Rock 'n Roll can never die!

  • Last week attended a dinner with Chris Ringland and had some of his wines. The 2008 Southern Belle Grenache had a nose worth the $20 retail. This was an interesting project of his, the wine was aged 4 months in Kentucky Bourbon barrels….there was some heat for sure, and when i checked the bottle I almost fell off my chair-17.6%!!!!! He chose not to mention it when he introduced the wine, so as to not influence us. The wine had such good fruit i didnt mind the alcohol all that much. After dinner I asked him about it, and he said the grenache in Mclaren Vale achieves such a degree of ripeness that this was not too surprising to him. He insists the barrels had nothing to do with it.

  • winecrazy

    Nice show!!!!!!. I loooooove Grenache!!!!

QOTD: I got a Pax Grenache by mistake once…….had it and thought it was Syrah because I couldn't see without my glasses….lol. So my friend at Mortons Stevie G who you signed the book for is telling me how he loved the grenache…..and I'm thinking he's had too many taste's that night form everyones table….lol

Then as I'm leaving I said I loved that Syrah, and the waiter said, it was Grenache. I said no…it was Syrah. So he went and got the bottle form the back and showed it to me in the light where I can see it better and sure enough……lol.

  • NY Pete

rock n roll will never die …
    have a great weekend dude

  • guymandude

That was a nice tight show.

Grenache is up there as a favorite.

  • David M Roberts

Admission: when I first started really trying new wines and exploring a bit, someone offered me a grenache and I thought they were talking about chocolate frosting…

  • drt999

QOTD — I believe I've posted all my grenache stories!

  • TommyB

Grenache… my best experiences from this grape have been from the Languedoc region of France and Spain. Unfortunately, CNDP wines I have so far found to be a little dissapointing. Sorry to say – if anyone can recommend to me a really good CNDP feel free to reply to this comment as I haven't found one yet! That includes you Gary!

  • it was Mott!

  • Steve_r_vb

pretty good show today i have had mostly new world grenaches but havent found one i love yet. when you gonna do a cigar wine pariing?

  • redrider21

Grenache took me from a casual and occasional wine drinker, to someone who started to shake their head a bit as I tasted some of those great '07 S. Rhone beauties. The first, second and third cases of wine I ever bought were all Grenache dominated S. Rhone's. I get a smile on my face when I even think of how those flavors come together.

  • jsums

Excellent little show. I adore Grenache. If I was forced to drink only one red wine for the rest of my life, it would definately be Grenache based. I'm loving the '07 Southern Rhone wines…some of the best stuff I've ever had. And how about the awesomeness continuing to come out of Priorat/Montsant and the great values from Calatayud and Campo de Borja?! L-O-V-E IT! QOTD1 – Sandman was a pain in the ass for me. I always thought he was harder to beat than Tyson. QOTD2 – I've probably posted it a million times already: a Gigondas started my wine obsession. It blew my mind.

  • jsums

I hear that. I can definately wreck myself on some Grand Cru Banyuls after dinner…

  • mclurker

I don't believe I've ever had a straight grenache. I used to sometimes get Rosemount's inexpensive blends of 50% grenache and 50% syrah. I thought they could sometimes be pretty tasty, with good fruit and low tannins.

QOTD: Clarence Boddicker (played by Kurtwood Smith, the father on That 70's Show) is one of my favorite bad guys.
