I am a big fan of getting back to the basics. Stick with 2-4 wines per show, fewer guests. Thanks for another show, Gary.

• castello

Top ten! also

Best white wine recently Biblia chora from Greece-50% Assyrtiko, 50% sauv. Blanc. Had it while on Mykinos. Great wine with fish Wish I could foind it here.
I like the shows where you feature an area or style of wine. Food isn't needed.

• RANDINTHECITY

GARY!!!!
Wow..the show is awesome…the Disqus causes me grief! LOL Dont even wanna leave comments anymore.. 🙁 But ..my mouth is way too big to stay silent!! LOL

QOTD: I mostly drink Red..but … I tried a treat called Kakigori. Its Dom P splashed over shaved ice with a green tea syrup…OMG.. I LOVED It! 🙂

<3

• QOTD: Gaia Wild Ferment Assyrtiko, very serious terroir wine.

• Mr V. I have had surprisingly copious amounts of white wines over the last 45 days.

From a 1986 Sonoma-Cutrer “Les Pierres” Chardonnay to a 2007 Naia Verdejo.

The '86 Chard was amazing on many levels, first and foremost a wine only six years younger than my wife, secondly, amazing character after well over 25 years was pretty much mind-blowing.

However, the most interesting had to be the Verdejo. I review it here: http://norcalwingman.com/2010/06/15/2007-naia-v

It's been a great month for Whites in my world.

Cheers,

Good show. Some friendly review notes & comments:
-For food pairing shows, you need 2 people so one can talk while the other chews
-You acknowledged it at the end, the food was not part of the show it was a distraction. You reviewed the wine, took a bite, and moved on without much mention of the pairing, why it worked, what else would work or what would not pair and why. I like when its all about the wine too so i cant blame you
-I Like the 'back to basics' mantra. We have a lot of things to cover such as 2004 Brunello Reservas (the regular releases were spectacular), hype over 2007 napa, unloved but massive value 2004 & 2006 Bordeaux, maybe a cult or collector riesling show with some nice Germans and Alsatians? Hype over 2007 Bolgheri? would **love** an intro to Douro as the 2007 vintage is supposedly off the charts (Port scores to prove it Dows 2007) but not much said of the red wines & the best producers are little known in the world.

QOTD: Goldwater S Blanc. Cant remember anything in particular that stands out other than thinking “this is good i'd get this again”. I suppose in the end it all really boils down to that.

• Jpatt

QOTD: Back to Basics! Do what you do best Gary and CRUSH IT! Great show.

-JPatt (jay pat) the EX Lurker.

• Via Domitia

There have been some really great visitors, but also a few real duds (e.g. Gretzky). Basics are always great, however. The brown bags keep the taster on his toes though and I favor blind tastings over non-blind.

• Jparadisee

Keep mixing it up for sure. Good guests are good. That being said I doubt anyone is ever disappointed to see you at a table with a few bottles doing a straight up old school show.

QotD: Stift Goettwig Gruner Veltliner Meswein. Amazing GruVee with lazer acidity made at a monestary and blessed by some dude with a better shot at heaven then me. Had this with spicy crawfish memorial day weekend and it was briliiant. This is my go to wine for the summer. I have become a GruVee fanatic to the point where I had to buy myself one of these from Andre mack's site: http://bit.ly/9cjJFw

Nice to have a “Back to the Basics” Show……

qotd: Muller Catoir Scheurebe Spatlese 2005

• njc2o

QOTD: Cakebread Reserve Chardonnay

• Good show. The more you can just get back to the wine, the better. With that said, I'm not opposed to food.

QOTD: The best white wine I've had in the past 45 days doesn't start with a “G”, but it was real nice. Buty sauvignon blanc/semillon/muscadelle. AMAZING.

• adrums

Had a great viognier blend from Tablas Creek ('08 cotes de tablas blanc), that was rocking, and a super value… ordered from a restaurant list last week for only 30 bones.

• guymandude

Like the format, keep breaking it up.

qotd; SB from S.Africa; Grzt. from WA;Vdjo. from Port;Chard. from Arg;Rslg. from Grm.all ok nothing crazy.

By reading the comments, i'm glad i'm NOT the only one having problems
with Discus….. In fact was goin' to go into Lurker-mode but figured i'd
comment this episode…. Discus STILL WON'T POST MY “REPLYS”. WTF
is goin' on with those AAAAAAAAAAASSSS HOOOOOOLLLLLESSSS?????????

• Randall

Top 100??

QOTD: Too many to list, but right now… Mhmmm… Searching… searching… Vinho Verde!

• jenna35

I enjoyed taking it back to the basics today! I always enjoy learning more about food and wine pairings! I'm looking forward to July 10th!

• jsums

Yes. Back to basics. I like a guest show sprinkled in once a week…and of course pleanty of BROWN BAG! QOTD – Here's my top 3 whites over the last month:

1) Cantina del Vermentino “Funtanaliras”, Vermentino di Gallura – 2008
2) Spyros Hatziyiannis Assyrtiko, Santorini – 2008
3) Shinn Estate Vineyards “First Fruit” Sauvignon Blanc, North Fork of LI – 2009

hey hey

• Delfinus

Best white wine: Catena Alta Chardonnay, Argentina. And I don't normally like Chardonnays. But this one is great.

• QOTD:

2007 Felton Road Riesling – New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago (3/7/2010)
Chartreuse colour. Diesel nose. Crisp sweet red delicious apple entry more than balanced by crisp, minerally, lime middle, lingering petrol & orange marmalade. (91 pts.)

I'm on record (understatement) of preferring the “back to basics”-limit/eliminate guest episodes. I particularly like the brown-bag/blind tasting episodes.

Edwardo

• NeilMc

QOTD 1: 2008 Domaine Cherrier & Fils Sancerre 2008. Good minerality with a twist of lemon peel some pear.

QOTD 2: I like all formats of shows just mix it up a bit. Sometimes when you have guests you tame down the brutal edge of “Gary V telling the Vaynernation the way it is” and you defer to them in a tame manner. I know you don't want to bash your guests and all but WLTV was built on changing the wine world, not kissing ass….

• jsums

YES! I love that producer from down in Paso Robles. They do brilliant Rhone-style wines. Easily one of my top 10 favorite producers in the world.

• Thursday

-The food is interesting, but as far as evaluating wine goes I feel like it is a major complication… l think that if you want to do food episodes, you should taste and score all the wines first, then add in the food, and perhaps score them again, or score the pairing.

ps… someone in the cindy forum sparked the thought of the Jet's “bye” week becoming a “buy” week instead. I like stuff like that. But seriously can you get me some jets tickets this season 😉

• jsums

Nice. Andre's a great guy and knows his stuff.

• Randall

He's baaaack…
p.s. Although I personally can't stand this particular sportscaster, I'll use one of his catch phrases for my own purposes. To GV I say…

*THROW IT DOWN, BIG MAN!!*
😉

• kv47

Last good white wine has to be a NZ Marlborough Shingle Peak Sauv Blanc. Nice mix of vegetal and tropical fruit flavors with good acidity. Had a good weekend with it!

Its definitely nice to watch a back to basics show. Though one guest i'd really love to see on the show would be Anthony Bourdain. Love his show, Love the thunder show and so would be brilliant to see the two together!!

• tarany

QOTD: Poesia Torrontes 2007. Delicious honey and pears. Torrontes is a great grape.

• bobbytiger

QOTD: I'm kinda stuck in a rut, between the Susana Balboa Torrantes, and the Folie a Deux, Menage a Trois, white wine blend.
However, it is a place in which I am happy to be.
I have taken a liking to Thai foods, and maybe instead of ordering a “beer”, I'll try the Gruner next time.
Nice show Gary.

• I like the food connection, although maybe just mentioning what they would be good with (you don't need the food there if you don't want) but getting tips on how to match things up is great! This episode came one day after I had a supermarket Thai food/wine pairing panic… next time I will be better prepared!

• Nhklug

Montinore Estate Gewurtz.
Awsome golden color…I think you could light up a cellar with it.
Nice and acidic with hints of hay or malted corn.
Lasts the whole pallet and never fails!

Waynooo, either you are having a bad night, or someone else was commenting with your avatar … you forgot to elongate shooooooooow! 😛

This is my first post so I can answer the QOTD: Just had a 2009 Vinosia Malvasia that was great for the price (about $12). I wanted to try something different. I'm almost exclusively a red guy, and my white wine experience has always been limited to super-chilled easy-drinking whites during summer. (The Chardonnay my mom used to get when I was younger turned me off of white wine for awhile: Always from California, and it always had a super buttery finish. My mom had no idea what my problem was…)

I think I'll take the summer to try white wines I've never had before and drink them at room temp.

Also, I agree with 'Thursday' below: I dig the wine/food episodes, but you should score the wines alone first, then score the pairing.

Awesome job, keep it up, hope to see you soon…

• Charlotte_DK

Yes, food and wine. U should have that in your show every day- one way or another. Just love it when U go back to basic and a lot of nerdy facts would be cool too 🙂

QOTD: Saint Romain from Domaine de Chassorney, 2008. A bit expensive though (40 $). Cant wait to go to Alsace to try my favorite grape riesling in about a month 🙂

• jason carey

Gary, I actually think the real good Gruners.. Hirtzberger, Nicholahof, Pixler, Nigl, Schloss are all in the 22-40 dollar range. I actually like some of those less expensive ones, but the real character of the grape starts above 22 bucks.. I can't agree with you on this one..

• Pavlos

My answer for the QOTD is:
Antonio Caggiano Bechar fiano 2008
A rich full body Italian wine (from south) with yellow-gold color, exotic aromas, deep mid-pallete and long-last finish. I could say, a big wine.
I think you should try it!

• Jhart

QOTD: 2007 Neyers Chardonnay. Sorry, Gary: no G…….

• yeah, guess i've lurked long enough, so here it goes.

QOTD: had a 2008 Ch Ste Michelle Riesling. very floral on the nose with hints of pear and peach. Green apple and some minierality on the pallet. good acid and suprizing long finish. bit sweet for my pallet, but very good for $8.

you can never go wrong with the basics. that's what i love about the show. Gary V breaking down the wines and telling it like it is. Guests are fun but you treat them with kid gloves. You dont want to insult them, but how about filming a little segment at the end where you score the wines and lay it all out on the table without them next to you. If you want to spice it up i think Mott should pick the wines for friday's show and taste together cause you won't hold back with mott.

• redrider21

Great to see we are getting back to basics! Would love to see some aged wines breaking into the Thunder Show! Rhone, Priorat, Chinon, Piedmont!!!

QOTD: 1999 Lopes de Heredia”Vina Gravonia” Crianza Blanco Rioja. Great color and just so cool to try a white wine with some serious age on it. Such rich flavors, a real treat and a nice departure from the norm. Selling for around $25
