Yo Randall, posting this by goin’ thru yur comment
    list….testin’…testin’…??…..

  • i say keep pairing the wines, it's after all what we do in the “real world”.

QOTD: haven't had white wine in a long time, the last one we drank was a 2005 Fiano and it was very good. (http://www.garalysoka.com/vinos/2009/10/1/fiano…)

  • Phaser

I realy like the food pairing shows. Nice!

QOTD: D' Oro wine, yesterday reading on the back porch. It must have been good I drank the whole bottle!

  • JiminAtlanta

I like basic, concise episodes early in the week so I have time to watch them. QOTD – My favorite white wines are from Navarro in Anderson Valley. They have good acidity and are good with food. I am not a big chardonnay fan normally, but one of theirs was very good last week on a hot Atlanta summer evening.

  • HugeneOR

QOTD: Had a 1992 Jos. Christoffel Jr. Ürziger Würzgarten auslese. Stunning wine. Looooong finish. Paid just $22 for it too.

I also like the basics. The sopranos eps were great, but it's time to go back to fundamentals. I really dig the blind episodes.

  • castello

Great Idea!! Mott! Welcome to the comments.

  • Randall

Yo, waynooo… I'm still using Windows Explorer and if it's any help, when I click on the reply button, the field w/ my avatar at the top comes up like it's going to let me reply, but there's no cursor blinking merrily away waiting for me to start typing. That's when I go up to the top left of the browser and hit the back arrow and then quickly hit the forward button to kinda refresh the page. THEN I go back to the comment I have been TRYING to reply to and hit the reply button again and it then opens the text box again… but THIS time I can add my 2 cents in…

  • Bill

QOTD: The 2008 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc, which is really Sauvignon Musque, but that's another story. Blockbuster wine… I wish I could get some!

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo Rhein King, havin’ a “bad night”…. This Disqus
    got me balls rattled…….

  • Ok, that's it. I'm snapping. Gary, this is your blog. If you want guests, do guests, if you want food pairings, do food pairing, if you want the brown bag, shut the front door f***ing brown bag it up! This not the same blog as episode #20. You have grow and stretch and do what interests you because if you did the same thing every blog it would have been boring ass as hell, you would have been bored and would made this blog disappear.

Is there shows I like, yeah, I like guests. I don't like the brown bag episodes but I don't bitch about it, at all. Why? Oh yeah, that's right, it's your show and maybe some other people DO like it. So go classic or go out there, it's all good.

Ok, now I can sit my cranky ass back in the rocking chair on my front porch with my 15 cats and shot gun. What was the QOTD? Screw it. I'll have whatever Randall is having. 😛

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Good show, Gary! Too many of my friends are red wine drinkers so I am left to learn about whites on my own. Definitely have to keep my eyes peeled for the Loimer Gruner Veltliner Terrassen.

Keep it simple this week like you said. Maybe go with 4 wines and a solid 25 min show. With the heat out like it is, stay with the whites. Even go Old World.

QOTD: Haven't had too many bottles in the past 45 days, but the Catena Alta Chard was fantastic! Going to a FX Pichler tasting this weekend coming hosted in D.C.. So I'll predict they will be off the charts!

PS – Throw a Loire in the mix this week. I've been wanting to get some feedback on them as I have not ventured into that varietal.

  • Bigorangemoq

I love every show GV! My best white wine as of late has to be the “Sketch” albarino, by Raul Perez!!! Amazing white wine, i wish i had a car air freshener that smelled like the sniffy sniff i got from that wine! Its brought in by Ole Imports Gary if you want to try it bro, i know you like Albarino.

  • waynooo daaa wino

  • waynooo daaa wino

    THROOOOOOW IIIT DOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWNN !!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :O)

  • Randall

    YYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOO,BBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    You are STILL the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • David M Roberts

Yes! Let's get back to the basics for just a while. All the interviews and change of venue has made this show dynamic, but I was just thinking the other day that, when I first picked up your show when you were still in the 100s for episode count, that it was so fundamental in a way, and I found myself kind of missing that a bit. It's huge that you are in a place where you can decide to turn down the celeb visits for a while, and also great that you are willing to do that to preserve the raw spirit of WLTV that really makes it special. Looking forward to GV, a few bottles of wine, and a few mumblings from Mott in the background.

  • Randall

But yer back up’n runnin’ now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Randall

😛 I totally have to bring you over to the dark side of Brown Bags, Mel…
People just can't WUSS OUT and hide behind the knowledge of what they're drinking… they have to actually KNOW what they're talking about…
Judging by the seat of their pants, or skirts, as it were…

    p.s. hey… chill… it's just me, don't shoot… I come bearing a Villa Carlotti Prosecco. I know it's a WEE bit rough around the edges, but it's STILL delicious…

  • David M Roberts

Oh… and to add to my sentiment, I include “Sir Gary” as an old fundamental. Where did that guy go? – he was the perfect foil…

  • B2B (Back to Basics) show which I really like though having a sprinkling of guests, brown bags, Laid Back Fridays stirs up the pot now and then so don't get rid of them.

QOTD: I really like this: Cantina del Taburno Falanghina

    Cheers!

  • waynooo daaa wino

After tanight, Disqus will have me CENSORED FOR
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD :o)
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Peter Box

    Hey Gary
Guests are OK now and then, but the lone Gary is the best.

QOTD: D'Arenberg Stump Jump 2008 Reisling, Sauvigon Blanc, Marsanne & Rousanne blend is pretty tasty.

  • LarBear

2005 Nun Vinya Dels Taus: WHY?. Becasue GV made such a big deal about it being the best white wine he has had FOREVER !! So I found some and it is spectactular. The second best white wine is the 2006 Heimbourg Riesling ala cinerella wine. You can not find either one anymore. For a red wine person, these are two great whites, and I'm still open to trying others. Oh !! Happy Fathers day to all the vey-ner-dads

  • Good to see ya back rockin' out solo.

QOTD: 2008 Casa Marin Sauv. Blanc Cipreses. Totally rocked my world for $17. One of the best wines I have had THIS YEAR! Guests are good every once in a while (had to say it because I was a guest myself at one point…) but nothing beats a solo show. Especially when it's Sir Gary and Knight Mott doing their thang…

  • Robert A Daines

Drop the food. Let's focus only on the wines for a while. How about a show on Oregon white wines?

  • johnfasc

definitely leave the food aside, focus on the vino.

suggestion – have kmurph pick out the 4 biggest oak monsters in the store stacked w/ sticks and vanilla and do a blind tasting to see you chew your arm off…c'monnnn, any takers?

qotd: Isabel Mondavi – deep red rose. got to meet rob and liked the vino.

  • johnfasc

    screw it , i have more suggestions…

how about another priorat show? or a 97 parker / ws and above show? best for last, how about a best label show?

love the laid back fridays, love the brown bags, love the educational same grape or same vintage/region shows. thanks!

  • Just Jack

Good back to basics show. I like the BB. I like the basic shows. I like the celebrity shows. Hell I like em all, except for the occasional pretentious guest who doesn't bring anything to the table. Luckily, we don't get that many of them so I am fine with whatever. I just wish there was a way to increase the participation of the community somehow. You know, a bigger buy in on the part of the Vayniacs. I don't know how but I only get paid enough to come up with the problem, I always leave solutions to folks higher up the food chain.

QOTD: easily the 06 Stefanini Monte Di Fice Soave! I got it from WL (I think it was a Cindy deal) several weeks back. I paid 15 bones and it rocked for the QPR. Crisp, citrus and floral up front and a very clean mineral driven finish with nice acid. Disappears just a tiny bit in the middle but for the price it is a steal. I always thought very poorly of Soave until I had this wine. It reminded me to keep an open mind.

  • A dumb Rhein king

Sorry to hear that bro. I’ve been having some troubles too. I’ve had to sign in like 50 times and then the writing in the box doesn’t always work. I normally use Firefox and have no probs, but I accidentally fried my laptop last night 🙁

  • chEEch

Food wasn't necessary here as you just briefly touched on it … your comment about how the Gruner and Gewurztraminer go well with Thai and Indian food was enough, no need for the backdrop you know?

QOTD; not a huge white fan but trying to expand my repertoire – just had the Loosen Bros 2008 Dr. L last Friday, definitely enjoyed it.

  • I haven't had any white wine in the last 45 days except a sip of some crappy wedding reception chardonnay…..

16 – totally forgot Vinny signed with the PATS for a short bit. Good pull on that one.

  • Alexandre-CF

It's good to be back to basics.

QOTD: Was a tablas creek – 06 Espirit de Beaucastel Blanc. great white wine almoust a baby white chateauneuf-du-pape. Had it at a new world tasting.

  • Randall

Ha! You are SO down on M2… Not that there's anything wrong with that!! 😀

p.s. Although I love a ton of different Whites, I've never been gangbusters about Soave, either. I mean I like it, just not the world's biggest fan. Kinda like Bastardo… really like it when it rocks…

  • howlr5

La Difference Grenache Blanc. This was my first GB wine and I was shocked at the quality. The Grenache Blanc varietal needs some love because it is under appreciated.

  • codicolvins

QOTD: Had a 2007 Weingut Bernhard Ott Gruner Veltliner you had suggested!

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Nothing super interesting. Have a Bedrock white wine that probably will be great when I drink it. Went to a tasting at Alba vineyards in the Dirty Jerz and they had a pretty good Gevurtz and an everyday white blend of Vidal Blanc and something else called Mainsail White. Other than that an Alpha Omega Chard, Clos Blancheau James Berry Vineyard Chard were very good. A nice picnic wine Shannon Ridge Chard(almost off-dry) and a German Sparkler I haven't had in years-Henckell-Trocken was a nice surprise for 8 bones–enjoyed more than many Proseccos.

  • MSA

2006 V. Sattui – Sattui Family Chardonnay. Great little wine for sipping in the summer

  • DAveAll

Now this is back to basics and roots. Just you, me and Mott! VERY good. Nerd it up even more! Though I liked the details around the grapes!

Thai and Gewurz! Gotta seek out Gruner!
QOTD: Viognier and Pinot Gris blend – wow, what a combination that is!

p.s. ideas: some dry rose's from southern Rhone? how about Tannat blends? It's almost 4th of July – how about hotdogs ? do a show outside cooking hotdogs, pairing wines. Jersey turnpike & whites. ha.

  • b2

you have great will power Gary…Not ure I could spit out every mouthful. I must say I've become a fan of your whole wine, social media, keynote speeches thang. Congrats…Speak soon…b2

  • I don't mind food pairing shows. That is what I do on a regular basis after all. Love back to the basics though!!

QOTD: Gary Farrell 2007 Chardonnay blew the doors off other whites I have had. Looking forward to trying some Chard from his new winery Alysian.

  • Thnx JF!

  • Tnx B2

  • TonyK

QOTD: a Vouvray, it was fantastic. Thanks GV! DOMAINE DE LA POULTIÈRE SEC TUFFO VOUVRAY 2008

I like the fact that you mix it up on the shows. But, food and wine pairing is a great idea for the show.

I know you like to expand palates and push boundaries. Can you get some more exotic varietals and regions on the show?

  • I noticed a little red wine in the spit bucket and couldn't help but wonder if you've been saving the Jets wine.

QOTD: The best three whites I've had in the last 45 days would be the 2008 La Cana Albarino (4th time I had it; you had it soon after the first time I had it, and seemed to be a big fan too).
2007 Scholium Project Choepheroi Chardonnay. It was being poured by winemaker Abe Schoener at an outdoor wine tasting I went to over the weekend. It was easily my favorite of the wines I tried that day. 2007 Grans Fassian Trittenheimer Riesling Kabinett. Nice acid and a fun canned pineapple thing going on in the mouth.

If I had to pick one, it'd probably be the Scholium Choepheroi.

  • Randall

Pretty cool post for a lurker! 😉
Yeah, that vino is not the driest ever, but for me (esp. w/whites like Rslg, Gewurtz, Sauv. Blancs, even Proseccos) it's all about the balance… So that sweetness is just another layer of awesome in the glass…

  • Anonymous

    sup?

  • Anonymous

    waynoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! it works nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Welcome back (to basics) Gary! Good show!
Love the guests (once in a while) if they have something interesting to say. 🙂

QOTD: I will echo others here with the Tablas Creek – Cote de Tablas Blanc. About $20 in SF Bay Area. I also liked Curran 2007 Grenache Blanc..($23). Most impressed by Miner Viognier. Wow.. I think it's the best Viognier I've had yet (also $20 retail).
