  • I like Thai food

I still have not had a memorable white wine. I had the Talbott Audrey Cuvee which was pretty tasty, but overall it was nothing special. It seems that whites cannot create that synesthetic effect of reds. There flavors, at best, seem pale comparisons to their impressions, i.e. honey, tropical fruits, etc. I would rather just eat the real thing.

Red wine, on the other hand seems to combine the flavors to create new ones, seemingly changing from glass to glass.

Whites are nice with rich, light tasting foods for their palate cleansing effect, but thats about it for me.

WL's stance is that the euro's volatility, more specifically that it's looking to tank, renders 2009 bdx futures to be a risky bet.

QOTD: My wife just got a new job, we opened a very good Suduiraut 1989… Just amazing (even better the day after…)! Thanks for the Loimer, look forward to test it.

  • RieslingRich

Man… Its nice to see a German Riesling drinker, they are vastly underrated!!

  • Good show.

QOTD – The last white wine I enjoyed was the J. Hofstatter Gewurztraminer. Opened it for a dinner party and it was a big hit.

I enjoy food and wine pairing episodes. They give me ideas to try at home. Please keep taping these kinds of shows from time to time.

QOTD: 2008 Navarro sauvignon blanc cuvee 128. Just opened tonight and enjoying it greatly. Of course here in Kansas City it is damn hot so it slightly chilled really hits the spot.

    Hey all,
    What's your favorite Thai dish?

I'm looking into expanding my horizons beyond the pad thai.

  • Mike in C-town

Haven't been into whites much lately, but the one I most enjoyed recently was the 2008 Skouras Moscofilero Peloponnese that i had back when Markus (ep. 866) rolled up. It may not be a true “G”, but it was G-reek wine.

  • Randall

Yet ANOTHER Vinho Verde comment. 🙂
    Indeed, summertime is here…

    I WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNTTSS
    MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE WLTVeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gary, I have had the Loimer a number of times and it never disappoints.

QOTD – 2000 Prager Reisling – blew me away and had a number of people who had it with me surprised as they “normally don't like Reislings…” I have another bottle and am looking forward to it.

Synesthesia, is an experience that describes a crossing up of the senses:
    heres a little Wiki:

  • waynooo daaa wino

    synesthetic???? What means daaaat???? :O)

  • winecrazy

White Wine Huh!!!!! WEEEEEEEEEEL. Who HA!!!!!!!

I think you shuold have more guest's from the vineyards and owners who can lend their knowledge or have a specific show once every other month where you have a winemaker give hits secrets to what home wine makers can do to better make wine at home because a lot of the home made wines are just not good. Except of course for DON JUAN!!!!! Now there is a jug of happiness. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Don and a few cool people this past weekend until 5:30 in the morning and let me tell you……it does some strange things to people. And that's all I'm gonna say about that…..LOL It was fiesty little jug and you can enjoy it with dungeness crab or burgers and ribs. In fact that's what I did.

    You had to be there.

QOTD: I had a Pahlmeyer chardonnay a few weeks ago and Who Ha Charlie! It was a nice bottle in deed.

  • winecrazy

    ARRRGH…!!!! It's a mutiny!!!!

  • waynooo daaa wino

mutiny??????? Yo Bro, say it ain't soooo!!!!! :O)

how bout lettin KMURPH and IAN do some shows now that 4th/5th day of the week.. need SOMETHIN

  • stevo

GV — Calling you out here man. You have been saying for the last 200 episodes or so that you are going “back to basics” and will have fewer guests. I love the guest aspect of the show, but you have too many guests that are random and not that interesting. I would implement the fewer guest commitment just by raising the bar on the quality of each guest.

QOTD: 2005 Chat Guiraud sauternes — absolutely loved it

  • pawncop

    Good episode.

I think the more you make an episode interesting, then you have the “basic's” down. Food with wine, wine with friends, wine with guests, those are all “basics” and I enjoy each version.

QOTD – I have had so many, really good white wines recently, but today I had another that suites my palate so well. 2008 Arca Nova, Colheita, Vinho Verde, 10.5% alcohol. My goodness, what a great grape, and done so very well (for me at any rate).

I tend to enjoy the more aciditic versions as mentioned in yesterday's episode, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Muscadet from the Loire valley, Albarino, etc, etc, etc.

This is a great wine, I could go on but I do not mean to gush. Gushing in Texas is frowned upon.

  • Cyrus

Back to basics Gary! Love the interviews, and yes, you are getting better at them but let's go OG wine library for a while. Charles Baur 2008 Alsace pinot blanc, delicious, balanced a great well-priced food white.

    'Purple Grillz…
    All thru my brain…
    Lately this Cote d'Villes…
    It don't look the same…

  • Richie

Good episode I thought. Love the Gruner so I could be a little bias.

    QOTD:Le Colture Prosecco Brut NV

  • Ajboynton73

I love the idea of doing some food pairings, especially when you pair with things most don't eat everyday (Like Thai for example). BTW there is a great Thai place in Stirling, NJ – Check it out if you can. My question about this episode is what makes the Gruner, especially match so well to Thai food?

My best White in the last 45 is Averill Lake 07 Chardonnay – It's a bit basic but easy going in the hot weather.

  • cellarrat5

Good tight show, similar to your opinion of the Gruner. Go back to basics, I am not a guest hater like so many of my fellow Vayniacs, and I have enjoyed the “perfect storm” of guests. That being said, your basics are what this show is built on; the backbone if you will.

QOTD: It was this amazing Chardonay I had at Cooking For Solutions. Orange peal, clove, melon, in this crazy combination I have never tasted in a Chard before. Blew my mind, so much so that I can't remember anything about it besides how it tasted.

  • QOTD; Shafer Gewurztraminer, from a little winery west of Portland.
Keep mixing it up, back to basics, brown bags, guests, etc…

  • Pat__B

Oregon 2008 Lumos Gewürztraminer – Temperance Hill Vineyard. Bought it on a recommendation at the wine store. Different and not something for every day, but good and a nice curveball.

  • Excellent – Gary you’re still and still bringing the thunder.

I would also be great to see a few shows featuring unusual wines/regions/grape varieties. In nearly 800 episodes we haven’t had a show on Tasmanian wine or Grampians or Bendigo or Goulburn Valley or Orange or any of the other lesser known Australian regions.

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • Rickredekop

you said to say hello, so I say hello.
can't say what the best is but am currently drinking a viongier/marsanne blend made by a friend who has opened his own winery near Vancouver. I have to admit that he knows what he is doing and makes some of the best whites in the region, and reds for that matter.
As far as your show formats, in my eyes you have not had any bad shows and you should go with your gut, do what feels right ,after all you have to like it or the “thunder” won't be there, and did you forget to mention that the show is free.

  • Marc-ChinaWineTours

Haven't had a white in the last 45 days, but tomorrow I'm doing a “Great White” tasting in honor of the 40th anniversary of Jaws 🙂

  • PurpleGrillz

excuse me… while I drink this wine.

  • Rprice105

German RIESLING, Went to the Mosel recently and tasted 249 wines in 7 days
From Troken to Feinherb(hoftroken), to Auslese, amazeing…

  • paulkochevar

    Great show…keep 'em coming!
Love the 'Back to Basic'…but there is no 'Thunder' with the food pairings.
QOTD: Had a 09 Frog's Leap Sav Blanc Sunday sitting on the patio in the 90 degree heat…delicious!

  • Neil W in KY

Good episode Gary. Your opinion of the Loimer Gruner made me want to go out and buy a bottle or two or three! That stuff sounds like some primo gruvee.

QOTD: Recent white wine that I had and really enjoyed was the Columbia Crest Two Vines Gewurztraminer. That stuff is a fantastic wine for the price point and has not disappointed me yet.

  • Geo

G, love your gig, first time commentor, if the economy wasnt in such a crater I might take your advice but 16 bones/btl isnt what I drink at home. To answ your Q, KJ Grand Reserve Chardonay 2007 at $14/btl a great value, wonder what you would rate it? The most i would spend if it were my money.

  • Randall

    Is this tomorrow…
Or just the end uvda vine…

p.s. I really wish Disqus would log my “likes”…

  • Njasabatini

Great show…thanks for coming back to the hood!!! Can't wait for more back to basics! How about the “laid back Friday” liked those too!!!

QOTD: '08 Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio & Verduzzo…light, refreshing yet crisp with low acidity. Very enjoyable by itself or I paired it with butterfly shrimp, jasmine rice followed by a small bowl of juicy red fruits.

    Keep them coming. //

Basics are good. Helps me take less time out of my morning….

QOTD: Can't split the two I tried one after the other recently of Dageneau Silex 06 (Didier's last vintage and man it's special), and a Puligny Montrachet with a couple of years on it I only got to try a tiny sample of – stunning fruit/oak/weight balance. Totally forgotten the details though

  • TommyB

Funny this episode has come up – I recently wrote a report on food and wine tasting and used a Thai restaurant menu for my wine selections. I associate Gewurz more with Chinese food (personal preference); for Thai food I think the best pairings are Riesling from Germany (dry or off-dry), new world Sauv Blancs, sparkling wines and good rose's. Will have a go at a GV next time though as I can eat Thai food all day long!
QOTD: Had an excellent Picpoul de Pinet the other day, ice cold i'm afraid on a scorching hot summers day in England sitting in my garden. Perfect!

  • QOTD: Wildwood Chardonnay 2007 – fantastic oakey full wine that fills your nostrils. Maybe it's the name but it just fills my mind with smells of moss and bark. That dank forest smell. – http://goo.gl/gDHl

Great show GV. Haven't watched in a while and was glad to see you 'getting back to your roots'. Personally a big fan of food and wine matching. Keep trying it.

  • QOTD: Green Point Brut. Pinot Noir /Chardonnay NV from Australia – A very nice value sparkler with a long finish. Had it in Traders Hotel in Deria Dubai it's been my go to wine for the last few weeks.

Gary, The bulk of the show has to be about the wine and your love for the wine. Stick with the old school style; just you and the bottles. Tell us about the great values out there and the winemakers who are bringing the thunder!

  • seb10

    Dear Gary,

Best whites: a bubbly Sekt Riesling from Von Buhl in the Pfalz in Germany. Really super stuff. As complex as grade A champagne, a little bit more fruit (melon/pear) which makes it great for food. Good acid.
Concerning the show: old school all the way wine,vs or blind baby !
    Love Seb

  • Maryswindell

Best white wine I have had lately: 2009 Lumos Temperance Hill Pinot Gri-Oregon

  • Bobbyxmiller

QOTD: 2007 Christian Salmon Sancerre Vieilles Vignes

  • garyleak

    Beringer PR Chardonnay 2007.
BTW, drink beer with spicy food. Many fewer disappointments.

Wow, that’s a big ass word! I looked it up on Wictionary the way you spelled it and no luck. Nice comeback though.Where is Mott?

  • Anonymous

Are you still going to 7/10?

  • Anonymous

Mott is hanging out in my backyard feeding the chickens. He really loves
    those birds!
