Well, wine is a beverage and most people drink it with food so food and wine pairings are a good idea. This one wasn't because you didn't really seem into the food at all. Best white wine lately for me has been Elyse Il Ingenue a white Rhone blend from Napa. Agree with MelbaLI, it is your blog and you should do what you like to do.

On both my Mac, this page is LOADING SLOW SLOW SLOW. Is it viddler, Disqus, Safari, the combo? Anyone else having these problems, and if so did you find a fix.

    Thanks

Wow, I am hungry for some Thai food now…
QOTD: I usually go for the Sauvignon Blancs in white wines, but my favorite is about $19 a bottle… So the other day I tried the La Vuelta Torrontos from Argentina, and it is definitely one of my new favorites! Only paid $9 for it… It goes great with salads, which is usually what I have for dinner on weeknights during the summer.

  • Well thank you. But don't agree with me too much, I will get drunk with power. ;P

  • Jpatt

yea Trimbach Gewürztraminer is a killer wine with fish.

  • You should try D’Arenberg’s Verdelho if you haven’t.

    Doh!

  • Another great episode. Tell Mott to do a close-up shot of the food next time! lol
QOTD – I drink mainly reds but I had a Casa Barranca Winery 2006 Wulf Vineyard Madera County Viognier that was quite good.

  • QOTD: Dry Creek Sav Blanc
    Keep the food!

I’ve got three green wristbands. You can have one.

Fantastic show! In many respects, just like the good old days. Lots of energy and lots of information. Food pairing is an art in and of itself, so including food from time to time means we learn just that much more. Doesn't have to be an every day affair.

As a twist on the QOTD, the absolute BEST white I ever had unfortunately did not come in the last 45 days. It was the Bragato Tocai Friulano that Gary scored at 94+ points. See Episode 471. Paired with blue crab cakes…out of this world. But now this gem has totally disappeared. I've used every avenue I know of to find it, with no luck. Anyone have a clue as to how a wine this good simply vanished? Slainte!

  • Great show Gary! I'm not a big white wine person *AT ALL*, but the Gruner looks really interesting and especially so based on the amount of description you gave on it.

I'll have to look for it, but I must say that there are a few times I did some searching (I'm in MI; north of Detroit) for some of the past reds you've featured and they were not available in my state. 🙁 We'll see what I can find. Either way, the show was great and it's helpful to me as someone who needs to boost his White wine IQ. 🙂

**I like the food pairing shows.**

  • Great showing by the GruV. I haven't had any in a while, so my wife and I will have to pick up some this week. Saw comments over the past few months requesting a domestic sparkler show. Sounds like a good idea.

QOTD: I had a glass of Savennieres at Sho Shaun Hergatt a few weeks ago for a celebration dinner. Wish I had the name on me, but it was delish.

  • I'm bad at remembering all the different wine I try which is why I have to get back to reviewing on cork'd. I believe it was a Pinot Bianco that stands out.

I like the food/wine pairing as most people I know drink wine during dinner and are typically afraid to experiment beyond what they know.

I'm looking forward to the sushi/wine pairing I've been suggesting. Sushi seems to be growing in popularity and I know there are many options to choose from. Would love to see some of your combos.

  • ScottEJ

    Nice. Love the Thai.

QOTD: Tough one. One that comes to mind is the Trouchard Rousanne. Wonderful wine for the price.

  • Dawn9850

QOTD: Had a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc recently in Seattle. It paired really nice with the rockfish that I had ordered. And enjoyed a Sbragia Sauvignon Blanc last night that was really different than anything I have had before; had a much heavier feel and darker color than I'm used to in a SB.

    nice!

Great Show!- my kind of show- short, to the point- the tasting and comments are what does it for me. Have started getting into whites more- best lately has been an Eric Louis Sancerre I believe.

  • QOTD: Best white in the past 45 days…….. Kahurangi Estate Gewurztraminer 2008, not yr typical gewurz but loved and would recommend it

  • QOTD: Just came back from a top day of tasting in the Clare Valley yesterday, so plenty of great Rieslings from the spectacular 2009 vintage. But they weren't my favorite white. It was instead a toss up between the 2007 Mitchell Semillon and the 2010 tank sample of the Cardinham Estate Riesling. The Semillon was one for the nerds. Dry grown, wild yeast and barrel-fermented Semillon makes for one hell of a funky ride but the texture, length and arc of fresh acidity makes this a wine to remember. As for the 2010 Riesling, it was all about the aroma. Burst out of the glass with limes, lemons, lemongrass, lemon blossom, a hint of ginger and wet pebbles. Delivered on the palate with exceptional integrity, excellent length, minerality and purity of fruit. 2010 looks like being another classic Riesling vintage for Clare, get on board before the rest of the world finds out!

  • MarcBelgium

Hi there, what a pleasant surprise.
I not only have Cutizzi in my cellar but also the Rubrato and Taurasi, which are also great.
I odore the wines of Campania. We go every year to Ravello and it's there the love started. Aglianico, Fiano, Falanghina, ….. and then the food paired with it. Haven on earth.
    Your right, let's stay connected.

  • Brunellofello

Interesting show Gary, I learned some new things. Probably the best white wine I've had lately is Lewis chardonnay. QOTD: keep it basic for awhile

  • charlzee

Good show GV, no guests was refreshing but I do like guests on occassion.

Best white recently? Du Mol Chard 07 great!

  • Allan

Casper The Friendly Ghost makes an apperance:::::::::::: that's about time……..!

    First of: Great Back-To-Your-Roots-Show!
    Second: Just rock it, G.!

Would like to see more food and wine shows, but also some shows on specific regions (would love a show on Rheingau Riesling) or grapes (Albariño, is a massively underrated white grape from Spain that most people don't even know about)…… and so on……..

But overall i'm happy with your return…………… 🙂

    Qotd: I've had a couple, F.X. Pichler Riesling & Trimbach Frédéric Émile Riesling…. I know, i'm a Riesling head……. :0)

    Salud!

  • pacw808

Wow, too bad the Gewurtz did not do well as it is one of the whites that I like.

QotD: I am really liking a cheap little vinho verde called Gazela right now. It's kind of like club soda with lime (including the spritz) which is good for the hot days of summer. And at $7.99 won't break the bank. Cheers!

  • JayZee13

Ah, back to the basics! It's kind of like coming home after a long trip – it just feels good. Thanks, GV. BTW, I am a big fan of GruVee. I had some for the first time a couple of years ago and i really loved the acid and the crisp, citrus tones. I have since had a couple of snoozers, but by and large, the GruVee is pretty darn good. My favorite so far is 2007 Johann Donabaum that I think I got on Cinderellawine.com.

QOTD: The best white wine I've had recently was the 2008 Tablas Creek Grenache Blanc. Yes, that's a G-wine as well. Nice and crisp, good acidity, goes well with many foods, and very reasonably priced. I noted lemon and lime on the palate and then a finish of green apples and minerals.

  • CHICAGO MARK

King Estate Pinot Gris…..very simple yet delish !

  • mmm GV with the GVs.
won a six package of Gruners in the auction at the Stowe Wine & Food Classic this past weekend:
    Sighardt Donabaum
    2 – Atzberg 05
    2 – Atzberg 07
    2 – Zornberg Smaragd

QOTD: Barone Pizzini Piavalta Verdicchio Superiore 'San Paolo' 2005

QOTD2: know your basics, but be ready to riff

  • corkscrew

Have not had either wine. QOTD-2007 X-Winery Chard has great acidity and lemon zest. http://www.winelx.com

  • QOTD – Tasted JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett 2007 over the weekend. Pretty amazing stuff: granny smith apple, petrol, minerality, yum.

  • Badams14

“salmon” groovey gruner veltliner …osterreich from austria…..goes fantastically with salmon…reasonably priced too

  • Bobdaniels145

you're doing great Gary. Keep it up. Love the back to basics move. Stick with that for a while.

    TX!

  • the only thing i love more than a bowl of spicy coconut red curry with shrimp, is pairing up a dry riesling or gewurtz alongside. MMM.

qotd: favorite wine in the last 45 days? it'd have to be the 2006 vina izadi rioja blanco. amazing acidity with a nutmeg meets black pepper spice thing on the back end. loved every sip.

  • Randall

    😉
Just gave you a double ‘like’ while trying to get my avatar on there. I guess Disqus’ glitches aren’t ALL bad… it couldn’t have happened to anyone nicer in this ‘net’borhood.

  • castello

I had the Rudy Pichler Riesling, I think different winery but very good.

Banyan wines is made with Thai food pairing in mind. Kenny(the winemaker) is making some awesome wines. Check them out!

  • Hyperdrew

Nah Gary-wine IS food. So you can feel free to keep the Thai around. I dig the shows that apply to more of us than those who can afford to track down the wines you praise-I can't spend $28 on a killer Gruner right now, but I can get some Thai food and play around with cheaper whites. Basics are fine, but as with life, variety in WLTV keeps it spicy.

  • Badabingmike

Don't laugh but was really impressed with Souverain Sauvignon Blanc. Citrus and pineapple. Food on the show is fine. Like it when you have 3 or more bottles per show.

  • Decent show.

QOTD: 2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Steinertal
Now this was my WOTN. Deep yellow color. On the nose there was lychee, a touch of fur, and stones. On the palate there was honey, peach, citrus, sea salt, stone minerality, & white pepper. The finish was long and just when you thought it would end the acidity kicked in and extended it even further. Great stuff.

  • From the Southwestern Wine Guy: Another delightful show, Gary. I don't know how you do so many quality shows, but I love them. Definately intrigued by the Gruner V, I may add it to my own food/wine paring show on blogtalkradio. Here's one you might have missed as it comes from New Mexico, my neck of the woods, Black Mesa 2009 Woodnymph Reisling scored a gold medal at the Finger Lakes International Wine competition. The floral nose also shows peach, which comes out broadly on the palate along with honey accents. The finish is long and ends in crystallized peach. Sorry, it's not a “G” wine.

  • Larsabeinet

2006 Argyros Assyrtiko Ktima from santorini, Greece- app.15$ locally -ridiculous good wine- great acid, minerality, quite “big” for a white, but soo balanced. Clap hands for Argyros.

  • chukheadted

    VERY IMPORTANT:

    Dear Gary,

With all of the hype surrounding 2009 bordeaux, we would LOVE to hear what you think now that prices have been coming out.

    1. have you tasted the wines? Can you compare their quality/style to other vintages?
    2. Do you think prices will increase? Is it worth buying on futures right now?
    3. Will winelibrary be carrying many 09s on futures?

    Many thanks!!!

  • esj100

Good show, love the back to basics stuff.
