91/100

line of the day – ‘Kinda like Lebron finished that game against the Pistons in 05 or 06 when he scored the last 25 or 30 points’

The first wine GV tasted was so nice that for a moment he was almost speechless. Now that’s a real rarity and pretty funny

  • I agree! Black Kite and Navarro are good, too. I saw the Drew Fog Eater PNN at a couple of SF Bay Area markets (Draeger's is one of them).

Now you've got me fired up when you like the wines this much. My favorite summer white so far is Il Ingenue from Elyse. Similar mix of varietals to the Booker and is available and I don't get the impression the Booker is.

  • chukheadted

not drinking the whites : / eek

  • QOTD – getting outside my normal box and learning about wines from the Okanagan in Canada. Two best i've tried so far are Lake Breeze Pinot Blanc and Van Westen Viognier.

  • howlr5

CedarCreek Proprietor's Red Pinot Noir/Merlot. Beautiful wine for summer BBQ's, and a steal at $13.99 canadian dollars.

  • Smahlatz

QOTD :2009 Vinhos Sogrape Vinho Verde Quinta de Azevedo. Lovely tropical/mineral nose; great acidity – citrus on the palate and long mineral finish, begging you to have more. This was my first experience of Vinho Verde and I loved it. (and only £5)

  • teckdeck2008

hey dude, don't fight it. enjoy the great record of wines on your show. because it makes it a better experience for us.
Qotd: my favorite outside of my personal box wine is the 2008 Santolo Vinho Verde. its the perfect summer wine with a crisp apple flavor with a touch of acidity at the end. Outside the convention type wine is First Love 2008 which is a white blend from australia. (62 semilon, 25 reisling, and 13 arneis) It has an interesting oily yet sweet and clean taste from the combination of the reisling and semilon.

  • teckdeck2008

vinho verde is an awesome wine in general. the strong minerality and acidity they have is amazingly good for the summer weather.

  • Smahlatz

For me I think there is a good correlation between the score and his description of the wine. I think wines are generally overscored. A good wine should be low 80s – even 70s – but a wine scoring 70s is viewed as poor. An excellent wine is going to score high 80's and an outrageous wine into the 90s. 95+ imo is reserved for magical wines which defy superlatives.

First, here's to a very happy 4th of July to you and yours, GV! Likewise to Mott and the good crew of Wine Library.
QOTD: this summer promises to be a scorcher but there is a white that can beat the heat, i.e. La Cana Albarino. Fantastically refreshing! See episode 750 for details. Slainte!

  • smiledoc

    QOTD: Verdicchio (Fazi Battaglia)!

  • A_S

Great show! Always fun to see Gary in good mood and on a roll:)
Also, I love when Mott turns the camera to catch other people working at WL.
Great wines! Happy 4th of July!!!

  • Randall

    Thanks. 🙂

Boo-Koo comments on Vinho Verde lately, Gary…
    Just sayin'…
    😉

  • theverylastlurker

Dear Gary, have you ever tasted a Maltese wine? Indigenous vine varietals of Malta: Girgentina (Ghirghentina) is a white, Gellewza is a black varietal. You said, “Try new things.” 🙂

  • GerryV

Enjoyed this episode Gary. I've always had great experience with Paso Robles wines.

QOTD: Have not yet had a white this summer. Will pick up a bottle for the 4th.

    Salud

  • slave2thevine

QOTD: Has to be the 2005 Nicolas Joly Savennières-Coulée de Serrant Clos de la Coulée de Serrant that I just had a few nights ago. It was ripping!

  • GerryV

Good point and here?s how I view scores.

“And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call “guidelines” than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner.” ? Pirates of the Caribbean

The thin analogy is to not hold scoring to perfect accuracy. One consistent thing we can always count on is the ?human factor?, which will always introduce imperfections. But that?s the fun part.

    Salud,

  • LurkerKing

Thanks for poppin out of the bushes Randall. You really came out in style with that excerpt. Classy my friend. Lurking is not a crime. Don’t ever forget it. You always have a home in the LKC (LURKER KING CREW).

And I agree MelbaLI a Kosher Merlot would be fun for everyone.

    Grazie,
    LK

  • VaDcRealEstate

I'm bummed that the 08 Booker Roussanne is sold out!

  • ONUMello

QOTD: It didn't blow me a way but I just finished a bottle of the Falesco Bitiano Bianco made from the Verdicchio grape which was quite interesting and well worth the 10 bones I paid, given that I'm pretty sure that's a new varietal for me.

  • Randall

Thanks! Yeah, with Disgust acting up I am more or less back to my old lurking habits again. Let’s see if I can go more than 2 episodes w/o posting this time… 😉
    p.s. My money’s not on me…

  • davidemillombard

Can't wait to try that Booker. Still a newbie and like the whites.

QOTD: Had a real tasty white at Cooper's Wine Bar in Philly. I'll have to get the name of it and update.

  • orangebottle

another great show. back to back like the LA Lakers.
    Gary,
is wax on the bottle better than foil? dose it do anything to the cork?
qotd: no out side the box white for me this summer yet.

  • Whit

Just a bit of a correction for you “Stephan Asseo” not “Steven Asseo”

  • adrums

Big ups for the La Cana Albarino from here as well; what a value. The '09 is out now, and is even more intense and flavorful than the fantastic '08!

  • adrums

Yeah, maybe. But scores are akin to grades in school (at least that was the concept behind RMP's original implementation of the system). So while low 80's might seem like it should mean pretty good (i.e. above average), none of us are / were super-jazzed about receiving a B-. Such a grade insinuates that some improvement is needed; likewise, if I turn in an 'excellent' paper, I also wouldn't be satisfied with or feel vindicated by a high 80's score… Know what I'm saying?

  • What? You lurking? No more posting? Are you trying to make me pout? 😉
    (I stand with Merlot)

  • LurkerKing

You are not alone my friend. The lurker pack grows stronger every day. Wear your Lurker badge with pride.

    P.S. Maltese people are hot.

  • pakman01

Nice! Good end to the week!
QOTD: 2007 Fogdog Chardonnay from Freestone Vineyards in Sonoma…D-licious!

  • Mrhalualani

QOTD: 09 Bonny Doon Albarino…Absolutely amazing!!

  • jsums

On a roll! Be the ball…nananananananana. QOTD – Best “outside the box” white this summer so far: either Spyros Hatziyiannis Assyrtiko, Santorini 2008 or Cantina del Vermentino “Funtanaliras”, Vermentino di Gallura 2008. Best “outside the box” white EVER: Pierre Gonon “Les Oliviers”, St. Joseph Blanc 2003.

  • jsums

Not to mention they're usually dirt cheap! Love 'em in the hot weather.

  • Beeper

    QOTD:rias baixas albarino

  • Randall

😀 Love da Merlot, too!! It’s just not the “Divine” Pinot Noir grape!
I would NEVER want to make someone as cool as you (yeah, that’s right… I said it) pout or doubt in any way…

    p.s. C’mon, people… she pulled out a “kraken” reference, for goodness sake…
p.p.s. And yes, my posting all “willy-nilly” is OVUH!! At least until Disqus gets it’s LAME act together again. It used to ROCK… but all I can say now is “what have you done for me lately”, and whatnot…

  • Randall

QOTD: Orange Muscat from Texas. Been drinking tons of it since the summer hit, especially chilled. Its super fragrant and has a demi-sec sweetness that quenches the thirst while getting ya drunk!

  • amsgpwarrior

I agree, vinho verde is the shite!

  • amsgpwarrior

QOTD: Dom Perignon 2000; I hardly ever drink champagne, but I could drink gallons of this stuff. Not the best champagne. I have had $40 Cali sparklers that were better, but I'm not going to complain.

  • JiminAtlanta

You know it is a good tasting when Gary drinks both wines without spitting. QOTD – I was at a blind white wine tasting last weekend and somebody brought a Paso Robles viognier, rousanne, marsanne that I scored the best of the bunch. And I am not normally a big Rhone white wine fan. I can't remember the winery; probably because we had quite a few wines that night.

  • Rita

The best out of the box white wine I had recently: an Israeli young and amazing wine maker, Ido Lewinsohn, made an exceptional Chardonnay, compared by some to grand cru's of Chabli . It's “Blanc, Garage de Papa” by Lewinsohn.

  • Allan 2.0

Gary has reinvented WLTV in one week, nice going! We're so lucky…

  • nitaT

    way to go California!
QOTD: no real outside the box wines this summer yet-sorry to say. Im having a new Champagne today though so – maybe this is it.

  • 😉 it was a special turn ….here we go………..

  • thnx Whit

  • ZachNYC

Direct and to the point….love it! No fluff, no BS. That's how ya roll GV.

  • Stan The Wine Man

Q.O.T.D. Syncline Gruner Veltliner 2009, Columbia Valley Washingtion.
I have tried quite a few Gruners in my career but this baby was unnerving. Razor sharp acidity with an underlying minerality backed by notes of lime, kiwi, apple skins and hints of grapefruit and peaches. The finish would not go away. It's twenty bucks which isn't bad for what you are getting. I scored this wine 92 points and will probably buy most of what they produced, which is not much (I think 150 cases). Keep up the good work Gary, I have enjoyed the latest shows, but most of them are informative and entertaining. Sorry I can't make it to your gig on the 10th, I work in a tourist destination area as a wine steward and you know what that means from July to September… Hold your breath and hope for the best. Cheers!

    Bring the thunder!

Actually i feel, that you feel totally re-energized as well… i'm lookin' forward to it all…..! 🙂

Hi Gary. Did you know that I'm a WLTV veteran? I've been watching your show from the first episodes on (I guess #10 or so). Perhaps you are wondering now what drew my attention to your show. There was an ad on the online edition of the wine spectator. Side question of the day: No, I didn't know that wine varietal.
