line of the day – ‘Kinda like Lebron finished that game against the Pistons in 05 or 06 when he scored the last 25 or 30 points’

The first wine GV tasted was so nice that for a moment he was almost speechless. Now that’s a real rarity and pretty funny

QOTD – Black Ankle Vineyards (MD) Bedlam. 56% Viognier, 12% Grüner Veltliner, 12% Chardonnay, 16% Albariño, 4% Muscat

QOTD: I'm almost ashamed to call myself a wine nerd and then tell you I haven't been outside the box lately. I'll blame the budget. I've had my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc because you can't avoid it, 3 Stones was the value of May into June. I've had Albarino, a South African white blend, Nederburg Lyric which may be considered outside the box. This week will be too hot and besides water, it may be time for a GruV.

  • plcb

Oh I take that back recently I had a Carpineto Dogajolo Grechetto White which is a blend of the local Tuscan Grechetto with a little chardonnay and/or sauvignon blanc in it. It was the first time tasting Grechetto. Yes! I did step outside the box!

2007 Tintero Moscato d'Asti “Sori Gramela” Super yummy perfect summer wine. And at around 12 bucks, a bargain!

Hey Gary… long time lurker, 1st time commenter (as Lurker Berserker). Diggin' the show man – I know you're on a roll showing love to a lot of recently tasted stuff but if you like it, you like it. That's what I've always liked about your show – you call it the way YOU taste it. You've said it before in the past but you may want to reiterate to the viewers to trust their own palates and that your comments are relative to YOUR tasting experience. Keep up the good work – you're making a difference!

  • K is for Kate

I had my first Soave (2008 I Stefanini Soave Il Selese) a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. For around $12, perfect for an ordinary night, especially with pizza.

  • K is for Kate

I was really impressed by the La Cana Albarino when I had it at a tasting at a local wine shop back in March, but they were sold out before I finally decided to buy it, so I am glad to hear that the '09 is good as well. It was my first ever Albarino, and while I have had several others since then that I enjoyed, none of them have quite matched it.

  • San Pedro de Yacochuya 2009 Torrontes from Salta, Argentina. Aromatically fantastic, long, clean, mineral finish. Paid US$ 12,00 at El Oviedo, great Mediterranean cuisine restaurant at Buenos Aires. Keep up the nice work, Gary!!!!

  • Randall

I?m very sad GV, Brazil is out of the World Cup? The first half was good, but the team returned for the second half in a completely different mood, nervous? The following day we saw Argentina getting wiped out by Germany 4-0 (The other team that I was seen lots of potential for winning the cup, and now clearly is going to win!). I hope Brazil works hard for WC 2014, it?s gonna be here!

The shows have been awesome lately GV, congrats !!!

P.S.: Just one more taught about the World Cup. Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) brings bad luck to every team he sheers on, first USA, then England, and last Brazil (His son is Brazilian), all teams lost!!!

been out of town all weekend, thanks for the friday show G…..would have liked some couch action though

  • mattgmann

    Nice show G.

QOTD: Hard to say… I've been pretty experimental as of late with whites, without the results I've been seeking. Not sure if it's “outside the box”, but Kung Fu Girl riesling by Charles Smith was a really fantastic surprise. Inexpensive and a really nice example of a prototypical riesling gone right. So that will be my vote.

I was however quite disappointed by a C Smith wine over the weekend. It was a K Vintners Syrah. I appologize that I cannot remember the specific wine, but it was not inexpensive. Alcohol was out of control, and the whole wine was a bit of a disconjointed mess. The fruit was really good and the finish strong, but overall, it was ruined by the flaws. I would honestly ask for my money back if that was an option.

I had a few more bottles of Juan Gil Jumilla 2007; an inexpensive monastrell that is just plain delicious.

I was also finally impressed with a sub $20 pinot. A $15 bottle called 'Spruce Goose' from Willamete. Tacky name and label, but a quality wine. Not mind blower by any means, but considering my general Pinot disappointment over the last year, a treat. I honestly would have guessed it a Bourgogne pinot blind. Medium/light bodied, understated fruit and real earthiness with strong tannins considering the weight.

I also received a pamphlet in the mail for 2009 Loring wine futures with very nice prices. I think I will order a mixed case. I hope the Santa Lucia is as good as last year's.

  • Hey gary

Good show – you are on a role

QOTD: I've been all over Frascati recently. Tired a couple of very interesting wines at very resonable prices

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • zanne_70

Great show Gary! Bring on some more of the nerd factor!

QOTD: the best outside the box white I've had thus far this summer was La Gineste from Les Chemins de Bassac in the Côtes de Thongue area of Languedoc. 100% Roussanne, rich and viscous like the blend you had here but with stone fruit aromas and delightful freshness as well. Not sure if it's available in the US but if you can find it, definitely get it!

  • Well, I guess the Spruce Goose Pinot is from Evergreen Vineyards wich is close to the Evergreen Aviation and Space museum in McMinnville, Oregon. The Spurce Goose is Howard Huges big wooden seaairplane built between 1942 and 1947 largest in the world at that point . So it's not that a tacky name, actually very historic. How do I know, I have an aviation crazy brother who lives in Oregon City and are a member of the museum.

  • Love Kung Fu Girl. I have turned people onto that wine that don't even like iesling. Probably because the wine has such a sauv blanc quality.

  • It's nice to see GOOD soaves coming back after years of over production. If it is in your area you should try Rocca Sveva Soave Classico or Pieropan Soave Classico. Both are very nice.

  • First of all, happy 4th to you, your family and all of Vaynernation. Great to see Cali bringing the thunder on America's birthday.

BTW; ran into a friend of yours, Greg Crone from Croney. He signed a couple of bottles of Cigar Box for me. Great guy.

QOTD: There are a couple I guess. Gratien & Meyer A.O.C. Samur Rose'. 75% Cabernet Franc , 25% Grolleau grapes. Great with grilled meats and grilled seafood.

La Posta Cocina is a blend of 60 % Malbec, 20% Syrah & 20% Bonarda. Nice jamminess up front with a sweet, fresh ground black pepper finish. Not your run of the mill malbec and it is great with spicy grilled or pulled pork or even just a plain old burger off the charcoal.

    As always, great show.

  • MarcBelgium

    That's absolutely right.

  • MarcBelgium

Nice show, an example of info, good wines and that all in a quite short episode.

  • larbear

I will definitly try these wines. AND I will find an avitar, and buy more whites so my friends who like whites will not have to BYO Whites.

  • corkscrew

Enjoy both Viognier and Syrah very much. Have not tired these. Honestly is it just me that has issues posting with discust?? Gary…you should really get involved and have them fix their bugs… QOTD-2009 Caldwell Syrah Rose….awesome bottle of wine. http://www.winelx.com

  • Brajnovic Tomislav

Dear Gary, I am following your shows for quite a long time. I learned a lot. But, there is one issue that was never addressed and I think is quite important. What's the difference between naturaly fermented (and made) wines and those that involve huge quantities of intervention in the celar.
In Croatia we formulated the notion of 'technical' wines. Is 'palet' the only criteria for judging wines or should we take in account other parameters. You often mention new world and old world wines diferences, how much are those differences influenced by technology of wine
making or producing. Can you make a show where you compare two wines from the same variety and terroir but that were made with two different approaches (technologies).
    Thank you for your comment!
Greetings from Tomislav Brajnovic, Croatian artists and wine enthousiast!

  • Dusanmal

Good run! Call them as they are and if wines keep to be good – even better for us to find those jewels easier. Thanks…

QOTD 2007 Cascade Riesling, Cascata Winery, Seneca lake region NY. Semi-dry (I'd even say dry-to-semi-dry) dominated by grapefruit, lemon, lime, granny Smith apples, tropical fruits on the nose. Perfect Summer wine.

  • Cardiff_Kie

Gonna try the Booker. Lately I've been drinking a 2008 pino grigio called Zenato (alla Venezia…Tripica). Ten beans a bottle. It's fantastic. I tried my first bottle of Red yesterday. Let's just say it was interesting to say the least. I gave @Sweetweetak my full Wazu review. She's cool.
