I am excited about this show. But no show, where are you? I am thirsty!

  • Dccoffey

    QOD – oak

  • teckdeck2008

Awesome idea for the show dude. I wish I could perform an experiment like this but i definitely lack the money lol.
Qotd: memories of my trip to south america. its a lot of what we drank there and as a newbie to wine i loved it. now not so much, but i enjoy it as a guilty pleasure from time to time.

  • Malbec= French Gauchos. Bizzare I know. Great episode. Does remind me of the old days.

PS: I had to go to Quicktime version. What's up with that?

  • I would like to try all three.

QOTD: Malbec= A “good churrasco” or “vacío” with friends, barbecue on the Argentinian Pampas.

  • DAveAll

I like Malbec. good to see vertical tastings, I like doing them…nerdy, but fun to do. thanks.
QOTD: Malbec = Alamos $10 90 points this year – fell in love. ohmygosh. served to friends at a steak grilling – success!

  • Beeper

    QOTD: chameleon

  • redrider21

QOTD: Malbec = “Hip Wine”. Though, those who love to speak about it ad nauseam couldn't tell you what/where/who a Cahors is.

  • Benjaminprice3

    Gary,
This episode raised a question I often wonder when I'm buying wine. With todays technology and the amount of information you can get about each bottle, what is most important to you when considering a particular purchase? Let's say you know the varietal/wine type you want and basic $ you want to spend…I'd love to hear how folks decide what to get. How would you rank the following qualities in importance and what else is important to you?

    The Brand (producer/negociant)
    The Process (winemaker/technique)
    The Vintage (weather, harvest, etc)
    The Fruit (vineyard quality/location)
    Other?

…oh, and lets say shelf talkers/critic reviews are not available.

  • jeffsjeff

Yes, GV, you are hitting a groove. So much of a groove that you forgot to ask today's QOTD.

    Keep it rolling…

  • Brunellofello

It's true Gary, you are hitting a groove and it's fun to come along for the ride. I think I'm hitting the same groove along with you, because at the moment you said it, I was thinking: “Maybe this Malbec drinks better young and the producers know it and they're going to charge more for it.” P.S. something else I noticed: the label for the Malbec sucks, but the wine was great. It reminds me of the 04 La Serena which has an ugly label but is probably my favorite brunello.

  • Nice show, may try the vertical.

QOTD: Malbec = inconsistent, Argentina, flash-in-the-pan/trendy as someone else referred to but can be surprised with a gem if you're lucky.

    “Don't cry for me . . . Argentina”

    Cheers!

  • QOTD: Malbec = Marlboro…maybe that's why the oak monster had a cigar.

  • NY Pete

    malbec = achaval ferrer

  • paz levinson

I want to see the episode!!! Argentinian thirst!

  • TonyK

QOTD: from cheap fruit-bomb to heaven full of sunshine.

  • Jcab

Malbec = Great times in Argentina during Study Abroad and of course great wine

I have several verticals of Malbec's (Luigi Bosca, Catena, nothing fancy)…Gary do you think that the O3 and 04 were disappointing in this episode because they are past their prime? Perhaps the fruit was a little baked or burnt? Any thoughts would be much obliged.

  • Gary-
Love the latest batch of shows.

Here's a quick “technical” question for you: when you say 92+ points, does the plus really mean 92.5 points or does it mean that it's 92 points today and it has a high probability of improving with time? I've never really been able to figure this one out. Thanks!

QOTD: When you say Malbec I think “Thank you for the The Show poster!” (episode #830).

  • howlr5

    Malbec= Overdone

  • Stan The Wine Man

    Dude,
Sometimes you do not explain the obvious. The critics scored this wine young, so it is better young. Plain and simple. Just call it like it is. Your palate hasn't changed enough to score a wine 4 points lower, the wine just did not age well. As far as the question of the day… Malbec will be the downfall of Argentina as Shiraz was of Australia. Do not hang your hat on one varietal, eventually peeps will tire of it and move on. Market other varietals that you do well with and let malbec carry you while it can. Cab does well, Torrontes and blends. Market the crap out of these and Argentina will carry on. Cheers Gary and have a fun time at the party!

  • Video doesn't work . Struck out with Quicktime, too. 🙁

  • A dumb Rhein king

Liked the wine you have the most of … hmmm 😛

QOTD: Malbec == Argentina's California Cab.

PS: Groove == Groove'z' … or 'y', depends on what timezone you're in.

  • Martyn

Still going through the 05 vintage in argentina, and it's my favourite. any reason why you skipped 05 and 06? I tried all of them in the winery, and 05 was and still is great for me.
Great to see you do verticals.

  • rwino

Malbec from South Americe = boring. Give me a Cohors instead. I do like the vertical concept, do them all the time.

  • Jrouss

    QOTD: Malbec = Over-rated!!

  • Gregb

Big G, good stuff. I agree that is lot to be learned by trying new vintages.

QOTD: Malbec = Hit and Miss

  • chukheadted

gary—thank you–verticals is a brilliant idea for a show. please try to do more! One of the best things I have learned from you is :

    VINTAGES MATTER!!!

It is absolutely amazing of you to be honest to the viewers and go below your original score. VERY HONEST. (very)

malbec = dark and ripe and…oaky?

  • Trey

You're not trying the right ones. Try the $30?80 range and you'll see.

  • Lucyfuer

yes the three vintages to me i can relate because unlike a malbec i will equate a musical group. their early vintage very angry and disjointed like the leads movements . however in the next vintage its still over the top um better but you notice the costumes and musical signatures like a blending of wine alchemy say its very theatrical and your fake breast commets which he wears during this vintage still a progression and as the wine maker blends better like a musicians skills and money and production allows for a more spectacular well produced wine or show which adds to cost which must be placed on the consumer or fan its still their best wine or show ive seen and tasted all three and loved each step of the evoluton and that is why i am qualified to say that i know my malbec in this case my musical groups origins and transformation into a fantastically produced production. at any rate i can appreciate all three vintages and do on a regular basis ive supported and partook of this wine or groups endeavors and this cigar hedonistic individual is not the entire component there are four varietals involved and its just the one outstanding oak monster that i initially and have loved despite its bizarre characteristics. so that being said fishy and salty i love those two flavors i like ocean water in my mouth. however not on an open wound even though salt water is a healer. so the pencil scratchy is a perspective that proper lighting and filling in with othet components will smooth out. ok now malbec=music my story the uncensored version is within the body of the text and i didnt put all the links or the secrets however the ingredients are here if you would like to see the context in which they were deliverd i am over whelmed i did spend alot of time in blogs tonight and Tom Wark;s fermentation blog was intersting i posted it to my fb on how points and ratings of wines and dines are so hard to in all reality trust consumers pallette not biased wine critics which were 100% from the region of the wines production _ one from east coast and even a well seasoned pallette is not say the average joe so its an interstin article which gave me a good perspective on judging and charcter.of judges. just like in music forums where consumers hate the interviewers and say and give them horrific descriptions to a level of unecessary insult. without knowing the evolution or who the reviewer is. now on that note i know this wine very well and ive tasted many of these wines in particular for decades ,we all evolve brothers and sisters smerk jab hoeky maybe .truth .see were not talking about the product we are discussing customer sevice brand integrity intension how one recieves a product or service and then if the customer finds a megga flaw instead of really admiting it they treat the customer with a fast food disposable replaceable attitude fine but then to continue to harass a xonsumer with offers of deals on a product based on services rendered and create a vile humiliatig environmet which could damage a reputation its over kill . i havent been in the ocean for some time so thers no chance he does eat sushi freaquently so hes fishy well alice is calling so please if you see the connections you will seethe context im not a prude ok. i dont jade easily. so please gar delete or keep this diatribe and let me know im unsure as to the resolve? i then went to another wine blog facinating stuff. but yesterday video with the ladie on the farm was inspiring today im again uninspired so mixed ennuendos within the review whos fishy? and salty and im pencil scratch ? and ? ok .thanks gyfooma

  • Lucyfuer

no i got that over time it was refined the later vintages were better . did i miss something.

  • Lucyfuer

i just read a fascinating blog in thomas warks fermentation on just that quesiton and he answers it quite well . gave me a whole perspective on ratings and points and reviewers. critics and judgings fascinating really .its the latest blog linked from twitter from another wine guy friend of garys sent me. peace

  • JeffR

Blank Screen … keeps running designiting 1 item remaining to be posted, even after selecting the “Quicktime Version”.

  • QOTD: Malbec = First Red Varietal this CKC remembers having about a year ago!

  • Having problems with the normal version of this video….which seems to be the case with JeffR below…

  • Wow, a lot of Argentine malbec trash talking going on here. I think some of you may need to take a note from Gary and explore above the $15 level. After touring wineries in Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, my wife and I joined a wine club (higher tier, after tasting flights of each side-by-side), and we've been shipped some really great wines over the last 3+ years (in addition to wine store purchases of course, and not just malbec-some of the blends, syrahs and cab francs are amazing). Also, if it were a fad, would big names from France, Italy and Spain really be opening up shop there?

QOTD: Malbec = the perfect big, fruity companion to a big, juicy steak

  • Rimarfish

People, click on the link of any of the wine feature on today's episode, and you'll be able to watch the episode from there.

  • QOTD: Malbec = Hangar-flying with friends.

My first experience with a Malbec was in February. As an aviation enthusiast, I love to attend airshows and use the tools of social media to bring others along for the ride. It was the first airshow of the season, and afterwards we (the performers and those of us that helped spread the word for the event) went to a local seafood restaurant to relax and share tall tales about flying and whatever else.

One of the headliners (who happens to own and fly a Pitts S2C), asked the server to choose a bottle of wine and bring it to the table to be shared by everyone there. She brought a Malbec.

Now I'm no wine expert (or novice for that matter), but I really enjoyed this particular wine. More than that, though, I enjoyed the company, conversation, fellowship, and stories (and there were some pretty crazy stories). The experience was incredible. I was brushing shoulders with some of the “greats” (i.e. Freddie Cabanas, Patty Wagstaff, Steve Oliver).

So for me, Malbec (and this one in particular) will always mean “hangar-flying with friends.”

Thanks for the great content! I love your style and I am really enjoying your book.

    Best!

  • Love the “groove”! Great past several episodes.

Also, Gary, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on today's NYTimes article that you surely have seen about sommeliers tasting wines in restaurants: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/07/dining/07pour

  • theverylastlurker

Thank you for the vertical tasting.
Argentine Malbec = a very clever business idea. (Just like Australian Shiraz.)
I prefer Malbec blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

  • ErieWineGuy

Great bunch of shows, this one included!

    QOTD: Malbec = Dark.

  • MarcBelgium

QOTD. Malbec = big, big, big wine. But, not always elegant. Like a huge man; like a huge man, powerful, muscular but no fine clothing. I prefer more refinement, more elegance, more high heal.

All by all a very learning show.

  • RichieHell

Love the classics Gary. Keep it up!
QOTD: It's not nearly as hot in Germany were I live as in the US so I haven't tried it yet.

  • from the mouths of babes!

  • Anonymous

I think it turns it into a 200 point scale. If you throw in minus signs it is a 300 point scale. It doesn’t really start till 70 so you have a 90 point scale?

  • Lurker Berserker

GM Gary – like a few others who commented about this issue, I'm only seeing a blank screen in the player window for this show. Send it up to Mott for escalation… I'll check it out later – looking forward to watching this one.

  • Allan

In this episode of WLTV Gary gets caught in a snow storm 🙂

  • Allan

Gary is the ultimate snowman iiii mean showman! 🙂

  • Allan

Click on wines tasted below the screen,,,,, when doing so, you can watch the ep.

  • zanne_70

QOTD: Malbec = Cahors of course!!

GV – such a good idea to do a vertical tasting but would have been interesting to have more discussion on the differences across the wines. You touched on vintage and the effects of time in the bottle but would love to have more of insights here. Vine age for example could also play a role. Or how the wine is oaked in different years (French vs. American, old vs. new… ) Loving the groove!
