line of the day – ‘the difference between a Harvard Gal and a Florida State chick’

Our great leader GV almost seemed a bit bored during this episode, easily distracted and pretty uninterested. In his defence the wines were always going to be poor and he did give them his full attention when tasting. Is he getting bored with producing the shows? …I hope not

I've had all of those wines at one time or another and your show reminded me why I haven't bought them in a long time. My favorite fruit (not of the island variety) is a MN Honeycrisp apple- yum!!

  • AllanJonassen

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy….. 😛

  • That show was slick, natural and flat out enjoyable much like a Rioja reserva (Tempranillo, to the moon!).

QOTD: This is tough but I am going with blackberries. Love em in a pie and straight.

  • AllanJonassen

People are furious at Yellow Tail, why? If you don't like it, don't buy

  • VanF

Sooooooo… my choices are “A Harvard Girl” or “A Florida State Chick.” Which is the good one??? Confused!!!

QOTD: Gotta go with Mott… watermelon!!!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!!!!!!!!

I love fruit..but desert island pick would def. be….
    Watermelon…of course 😉
    Its God's gift!

    XOX

  • Just Jack

Man there are a lot of Florida State chicks with graduate degrees looking to kick some Russian ass today.

QOTD: Raspberries and more raspberries. You put raspberries on a toad turd and I am all over it.

  • Dominique

Papaya indeed 🙂 You read my mind. Scary.

  • orangebottle

wow, great week of shows.Supermarket wines, it is what you expected, easy to find, not intimidating to know all the flavors in them and good prices. How they create this fake sugar taste? i remember Rosemount Estate grenache-shiraz had similar fake candy flavor.
qotd: Mango, Watermelon, papaya, guava, Lychee, pineapple and sugar cane. I love them all.

  • Serious meh.

    QOTD: strawberries

  • AllanJonassen

I have an idea for a great slogan; “Yellow Tail, the wine YOU should bring to your next Lady Gaga concert, totally fakey fake like the GOOD lady herself….”

    That's it. 😛

  • Alexandre-CF

yeah dude , that's what we r looking for. simple and solid 90 pts show.
I really hate Jacobs creek, i prefer to spend my money on coin flip. 😛

    QOTD: Raspberry and sometimes strawberry

    Cheers Dude

  • yankee22

    QOTD: Mango

  • VanF

Heh, heh, heh… perfect, Just Jack!

  • QOTD: Frozen red grapes. Not a huge fan of the wines on the show, but my first memory of “legal” wine drinking came when I worked at a Mediterranean restaurant and people used to knock those kinds of wines but pay $20 a bottle for a Kenwood Chardonnay that would run $5.49 at the local grocery store just two doors over. Crazy what candle light and a lamb shwarma will do to a person.

  • Great little show Gary….

QOTD – Its got to be a mango

My question to you Gary…..895 shows………MWs on the show such as Jancis Robinson and an entry in Decanter as one of the most influential wine commentators…havent you now changed the wine world…..when will your catchphrase stop…episode 1000 when you sign off? – Very curious

  • I am seriously diggin this chaotic format you do this week so much. Interruptions all over, tours through the store, telling stories about your German class, I freaking love it, so big up for that!

QOTD: It has to be blackberry and raspberry.

  • AllanJonassen

Yeah Gary, will it all come to a halt at 1000? Who could blame you?? You deserve your life back………………………………………………………………………………………………….!!

  • AllanJonassen

Disqust – when you don't want to reply to your fellow peeps….!

    Now that's a great slogan!! 😛

  • Smahlatz

    QOTD : Black Licorith

  • hokie wino

Haha I love the stab at FSU!

    QOTD: Gotta be watermelon!

  • Bradengillespie

    QOTD – are cheeseburgers fruit?

  • LurkerKing

I got your papaya right here…

That being said the King of all Lurkers enjoys strawberries the best.

Can't wait for friday and “wines I would never drink week” to be over.

  • winephix

Grapes! Duh! If i get bored eating them i can always crush them! To easy??? Ok, then it's between strawberries and watermelon!

  • sethsethy

ive tried almost every bottle of wine at my supermarket, including these!

qotd: im with mott here…i choose watermelon

  • Good week of supermarket wines, Gary!
Consumer Reports reported a couple of yrs ago that Yellow Tail was best supermarket wine out there. Definitely better than Lindeman's, and agree with your score of 85.

    QOTD: Papaya and watermelon.

  • Lmnopinot

    Tomato

  • redrider21

    QOTD: Strawberry

  • Randall

What Pinots are finally educating your plain, plebian, pedestrian palate? Do I dare hope it’s something from California at least? *crosses fingers and hopes for the best*
    🙂

  • I love these shows, I really do. And yes, I'm pysched about getting back to basics.

QOTD Desert Island Fruit: Hands down it has to be blueberries with bananas and a juicy grapefruit rounding out my Top 3.

I may have to buy some Yellow Tail Shiraz! The heresy of it all. And yes, your “action” should be much better when you have shows. So please get my order to me by the weekend which so happens to be tomorrow. 🙂 I have to take some whites to a friend's house on Saturday and I'm trying to avoid taking my Pahlmeyer Chard. They don't know the difference.

    Cheers!

    P.S. 7-7-7 = Bert Jones, best #7 QB

  • Randall

Have to agree… but, and I can hardly believe I’m asking this, but have you tried a ’12 Apostles’ Shiraz? I know it’s a simpleton of a fruit bomb, but having copped to that, I have to say that it’s fairly pleasant to drink… Just askin’…

  • Oh yes, is the “Big News” an addition to the GV clan? 🙂

  • OTD: Locally grown blueberries and cherries! Gotta bring the Michigan to the table again.

    Bring the #92.

Let's go change the wine world!!!

  • One of my favorite shows in a while. Nothing to do with the wine but good tempo, good energy, and to be honest, it's great to see wines that most people are drinking.

    QOTD: Nectarine.

  • I am a Florida State chick who had the chance to be a Harvard gal, thank you very much, and do not appreciate being compared to a Yellow Tail Shiraz. Ick.
I was look forward to this show, too, because I am currently imposing a no-wines-over-$10 rule on myself (have some excellent ones, too) but Gary… man… just because you had a gator on yesterday (ptui!) doesn't mean you should be insulting Florida State today. Thanks for nothing.

  • Anonymous

    I don’t have a drinking problem…….

  • Anonymous

The point is that it seems to be made in a factory as cheap as possible so they can ship it around the world for the price of……… shipping it around the world. Something wrong with that.

  • Katemgross

I too am a Florida State chick and damn proud of it. Compair me to a good $10 wine any day but not Super Market swill. Unlike a Harvard gal I was wise with my money and left school with considerably less debt.

  • Katemgross

    *compare

  • LLUErker

QOTD: I love a lot of fruit, so it's hard to choose. It's summer, so that makes me want to say something like strawberries or peaches or watermelon, but if you ignore the weather and ignore the “desert island” setting, I think my favorite fruit would have to be durian. I know some people hate it, and it's thick and creamy and that turns more people off, and I know it's an acquired taste, but once you've acquired it, it's like barrel smoked whiskey. Incredible.

  • laurieinvt

I've got to say, the Harvard/ FSU analogy tanked. High intelligence and quality do not, for a variety of reasons, always lead to the resume' of grades, $$ and connections that can get one into an ivy league school. I've noticed that what we actually do with our education matters far more than where we received it…
That said, fun (like a game of Pong) show!
QOTD: The fresh off the bush blueberries I've been inhaling the last couple days. But if I had a fresh 'real' (not grocery store) peach right now, that would probably be it.

  • Matthew Castle1

    GV,

You visit Australia and get access to amazing wines and people, yet continue to showcase where Australia is on the export market, not where we're headed. Ordering a container load of 06 kangarilla rd Shiraz that wasn't good enough to sell domestically and flogging it off online, and again putting the spot light on the cheap and nasties is frustratingly counter productive for the category.

    Matt

  • A dumb Rhein king

    '82 was an excellent year.

Oh man, I think you may have lost an entire state of viewers.

QOTD: My desert island fruit would probably be bananas. Between Mott's three choices I would choose the cantaloupe. Not the crappy grocery store ones, but a nice ripe one that someone grew in their backyard.

  • johnfarrin

I'm almost sure that if ANY of your regular commentors had responded, “Oh God Gary, Lindeman's (or either of the other two) is my Go To Tuesday burger wine you would stop producing eps as of right now 😉 You would be found weeks later wandering aimlessly muttering, “Four years, FOUR YEARS I tried to get them to drink better wine even at this price point and THIS is what I get.

    QOTD: Black raspberries

  • WCJ

    gv,

good shows this week…but let's all take a pass on these three dogs.

    QOTD: Plums.

    regards,
    MG

  • johnfarrin

God I'm sorry Kate but if “compair” didn't prove Gary's analogy, nothing will.

  • johnfarrin

Jesus Sarah, lighten up. I have to admit that it's getting pretty wearisome listening to folks who take themselves waaaaay too seriously.

  • karrens

QOTD: Gooseberries are my favorite fruit, but they aren't my answer to this question for a simple reason; they hurt my teeth. The skins have a lot of acid in them and you start to feel it about halfway through a bowl. The problem with watermelon is that it's really best cold, and you wouldn't be able to have it that way on a desert island. I guess I'll say peaches, but I can't help but think that maybe the lesson here is that desert islands suck.
