line of the day – ‘the difference between a Harvard Gal and a Florida State chick’

Our great leader GV almost seemed a bit bored during this episode, easily distracted and pretty uninterested. In his defence the wines were always going to be poor and he did give them his full attention when tasting. Is he getting bored with producing the shows? …I hope not

tell WL to bring back the edit button … 🙂

QOTD: Mangos. Mmmmmmm. Not from most of the U.S., but SE Asia, like Philippines. Take it easy, FSU “chicks”…it was a joke. It's just your school, not your life story (I hope).

  • plcb

Whoa! Going extremely supermarket today. I'll watch tomorrow.

  • Randall

    …I put the glass to my mouth, slurp, and… No Problem… the glass is empty!! :}

  • I enjoy the content but I agree, this selection is tough to swallow. Thank god Gary is doing the work for us.

  • Romtina

I liked the show. These brands are a good way to start when novices like me want to try a varietal they have never tasted before, IMO. Not too much of an investment in something I might not like after all… But if I like it, I can venture out from there…
Anyway, QOTD: pineapple! I have never met a fruit I didn't like, but I did not have to think long about that one…

  • LurkerKing

    *gasp* how dare you.

  • LurkerKing

All of the wines this week will be featured on the “Alcoholics R US Mailing List” RANDALL! LINK IT UP!

  • WineWoman

Think I'd rather have the coffee.

QOTD: Black Cherries–tough decision. I do love blackberries and watermelon, but usually enjoy an array of fruits in a salad.

  • chrisbartow

    QOTD: Peaches

  • Jct1mtc

    Raspberries

  • I think there was some chatter about that a long while back, Gary sort of made a remark that 1000 would be a nice end of line..

  • The Thank You Economy?

  • You tell them Florida state chick! They are just cranky. Adorable, but cranky.

  • Randall

And a truer slogan has never been uttered! W/ the possible exception of “Gators Rule!”
    😉

  • Andinil

As an educational wine experience (for a relative newbie), would be worthwhile to taste one of these three commercial, so-so wines alongside a much better representation of the same varietal? Or is it not worth it?

QOTD: This summer I have to say peaches!

  • I would be very interested to see this show blind. Not so sure that there wasn't a little snobbery going on here. I haven't personally tried any of these but just the look on your face while just introducing the wines…. Maybe its just me, always cheering for the underdog.

    QOTD: Bananas

  • Randall

Just too good to pass up, eh, John? 😀

  • Randall

Don't lie! I saw you lurking in the supermarket aisle w/ not one but TWO bottles of Yellow Tail in yer cart…

  • Thursday

…looked as if you were starting to get a little tuned by the time you taped this one!

  • scottEJ

I can honestly say that none of these have crossed my palate and I'm darn not upset about it.

QOTD: Very tough question. Fresh and juicy……….pineapple.

  • Don Simpson

    QOTD: BLACKBERRIES! Simply delicious…

  • Randall

    Man, Kate… it's just not your day… I think you meant “compare”…

  • guymandude

    Awesome shows Bro!

qotd; eat the fruit on the island

  • Of the three wines I also have to go to 'yellow tail' for the top spot.

    QOTD: Apples, any kind.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Good show, GV!!!

QOTD: I'm going with strawberries….love them!

PS – Rombrauer at Total Wine in VA….$37 US BONES….ridiculous!

  • Senator

Desert island wine? For obvious reasons it's gotta be the shipova.

  • ChrisV

Little tip for anyone out there drinking cheap Aussie wine: avoid the Merlot. I'm not anti the Merlot grape in general but Australia tends to do an appalling job with it. The 2009 Jacob's Creek Shiraz is likely to be a decent enough wine.

QOTD: Feijoas. If you've never had them, seek them out. They're a fruit native to New Zealand and distantly related to the guava, I think.

  • Raspberries!

  • QOTD Cherries for sure!

    BTW confirmed Lurker 😮

  • John Rogers

I have not been a fan of aussie wines for a long time. Use to enjoy Rosemount Shiraz but not any more. For under ten bones check out Washington wines they are hard to beat for the price.

QOTD: Pineapple fresh and ripe(if you can find it).

  • Lady L'egance

Whoa, slow down GV! It feels like you're pumping out 2 episodes a day, I can barely keep up lol

QOTD: plums, the super sour ones. 🙂

  • mxcnmrcnzrr

I have to go with the pineapple. Fresh perfectly ripe pineapple is almost as good as… well you know. 🙂

  • ChinonRouge

Good show. Yellow tail was a mainstay until I learned more about wine. Once bought it often. Now can't stand it. Island fruit mango.

  • Castagna

But Matt, Gary is deliberately doing a series of tastings on affordable, super-market type wines. And he announces up front that that is what he's doing. No one expects any of them, whether they're from California, Australia, or any other place, to be all that good. That said, it would be nice to see a selection of some of the best Shiraz Australia has to offer.

  • ONUMello

I find it absolutely fascinating that the Yellowtail was the winner! I have usually found Jacob's Creek to be pretty solid, though I've never had their merlot.

    QOTD: Ranier cherries

  • ONUMello

    Typo… Rainier. Sorry, Washington.

  • castello

    Worth it! Every dime…..

  • castello

Not if they have a swim up bar

  • think i smell a little snobbery in this episode. I think the biggest problem when drinking 7-10 dollar wines is that experinced wine drinkers tend to focus whats missing and not on whats there. now gary your fair but that look when you picked up the yellow tail said “i know i'm not going to like this.” but 85 is not a bad score but you know you wanted to give it an 84.

    QOTD: Apricotts or plums

  • Gobi

QOTD : really ripe pears, to the point that theyre really soft, juicy, and sweet

BTW nice mention to my alma mater GV !!!!!… FSU FSU FSU FSU FSU!!! GO NOLESSSSSSSS

  • This summer I'm all about pears! Just made a ruccola/macadamia/pear pesto. Sensationell!

  • andreparsons

I've been watching your shows for a couple of years now, and I think this is the first time you have tasted wines that I can find here in Japan! Hurray! Great week of shows GV! Keep them coming!

    QOTD: Watermelon

  • rexinator

If I can tape a piece of cantaloupe onto my nostrils, while chewing on watermelon. That'll be the way to do it.

  • howlr5

    Tomato

  • You know, since it is a desert island and not a tropical one, meaning there is no fruit normally, I'm gonna give this the artistic license to just make one up… I'm gonna say… mango

  • 85 pts for $7 is hardly a “dog”. That's good-great QPR

  • Randall

Yes… I agree… GO GATORS!!!!!!! UF!! UF!! UF!!
    GGOOOO GGAAAATTTOOOORRRRSSSS!!!!!!!
    ;}

  • Randall

    Good…

  • Yep, try them all and as Gary said take the Paralelle 45 along to compare. And remember, it is your palate that decide what is good or not, not any wineshow or bloggposter
