line of the day – ‘the difference between a Harvard Gal and a Florida State chick’

Our great leader GV almost seemed a bit bored during this episode, easily distracted and pretty uninterested. In his defence the wines were always going to be poor and he did give them his full attention when tasting. Is he getting bored with producing the shows? …I hope not

QOTD: DUH…. GRAPES!! I CAN EAT THEM FRESH, AND MAKE WINE OUT OF THEM. DUH

  • Randall

Wow. See, this is why you can say w/ Lloyd Bentsen…
“I knew Chris Mott… and, Senator, you’re no Chris Mott!” (look it up, young’uns)

    p.s. I almost did, but’s the site’s a wee bit too… hmm, how shall we say… Adult for me…

  • QOTD: I gotta go with strawberries. They are just so refreshing.

Hey dude, thanks! Lately I’ve been riffing on a lot of French wines, especially from the lesser known areas like Languedoc and Corbieres where you can get some awesome buys. I also just got back from Australia and while I am not a fan of the mass-market Aussie wines, I do like of lot of their other wines that are still reasonably priced. Try Hewitson’s “Miss Harry”, which is a nice red blend, d’Arenberg’s “The Stump Jump” red blend, and d’Arenberg’s “The Hermit Crab” white blend. I think all are excellent value plays. More expensive than Yellow Tail, to be sure, but much better QPR. Cheers!

  • Blazing Saddles?

  • Just curious, Dominus. What is your wine palette like? I’m an over the top fruit bomb kinda wine guy, like Wine Crazy. If there is one fruit I hate, it would be grapefruit. My guess is that you probably enjoy grapefruit, hearty Sancerres…?

  • I agree Sarah 🙁 I am so so sorry!

  • plcb

please pass the 'all fruit' (Polaners, LOL)

    QOTD: banana

Customers swarm the Yellowtail section of the store.

  • RichieHell

QOTD: Probably Guava but I can't really get those around here. From the fruit thats widley available here cherries are my favorite.

  • WineGeekChris

LOVE the Supermarket shows. It's a great chance of find cheap wines and compare palates. QOTD: Black Raspberries. Great to eat, and you can make fruit wine out of them!

  • John4regal

wow, “florida state chick” shout out to florida state!

  • WineTechie

Really like the show, you just 'bring it'!

Black cherries! They have been my favorite for as long as I can remember.

  • Nik_B

Would be great to have had a 6 bottle blind-tasting of these 3 and 3 'top-end' Australian reds (Molly Dooker, Two Hands, Penfolds etc)

  • Nik_B

Good show – it's surprising it took so many episodes to a show like this one. Would love to have seen it done blind though.. especially against some more expensive Australian reds.

  • wizzardsblog

I like fruit juice and wine, I don't like the actual fruit. I used to love bananas but went off them a few years ago.

  • MikeFielden

QOTD: Im easy… Apples or Bananas

  • BERNARDO ARCE

    K I W I !

Roger Sabon Lirac is great QPR! seek out…*

  • Jason carey

To me, brand building for garbage is a waste of time and selling crap to the public does not make me all warm and fuzzy. So I don't care how clever the Yellowtail folks are.

  • Phredd3

QOTD: Apples, hands down. Not only are there several hundred varieties, but they are good with desserts, savory dishes, appetizers, breakfasts – everything. Also, you can ferment them into cider or applewine, fortify the wine into pommeau, and distill them into brandy.

In fact, you ought to do a fermented apple show, Gary. If you can do a sake show, you can certainly do a show featuring cider, pommeau and/or calvados.

  • Tasha Reilly

Ripe juicy peaches are my favorite.. and sadly hard to find.

  • TimCtheFilmGuy

    Grapefruit. Everyday. Serious love.

  • MarcBelgium

Supermarket wines, ok, but if there are no interesting wines, then, I don't get it.
I'll never buy or drink these wines.
After supermarket wines why not once top of the bill wines? That would be great.

QOTD. Melon, the Cavailon from France.

  • TommyB

Great QOTD! I’m with Mott on the melon front; only “pipped” (excuse the pun) by raspberries, which, as we all know, are blatently – obnoxiously – unaquivelently, the greatest fruit in existance…

  • Hondo

    QOTD: Love pineapple!

  • GatorEvan

hahahahah…..anytime you make fun of FSU, I love it…..

    Hi Gary,
    Jacq. from T.O. here.

My dear sweet, lovable, likeable, funny, delightful, quick witted, gregarious Gary, Gary, Gary. Sorry but I’ve got to call you out on the Harvard, Florida comment. Why you’ve just made a faux pas that people do about wine……..you’ve assumed!! I’m sure you didn’t mean it quite the way it came out………

Having said that, I love that you did this show and rated the wines what you did. There is a market for these wines. I call them the “they are what they are wines”. You pay $7 bones, you get a $7 dollar experience. And not to say that you won’t find a little pearl at this price range because you can.

What I don’t like is when wine writers bolster these wines to a status that they are not worthy of which I find happens quite often.

They are what they are and there is a reason they are inexpensive. So thanks calling a spade a spade my dear Gary!!

Wow, I feel we’ve come full circle!

    Q.O.T.D. Mmmmmm……ango!!!

    Cheers

    Jacqueline

Where is the comment box for the new episode?

  • Phil G

GV, why you hating on the Florida State folks?

    QOTD – Pineapple!

  • Florida State has produced 3 Rhodes scholars in the last 5 years. It might not be Harvard, but it a lot less expensive. Great QPR!
You could have just dogged on the gators and not have to be embarrassed.
    Go Noles!

  • Im not I love FSU … I am so soooooooooo sorry

  • I am super wrong about FSU.. I am a dumby 🙁

  • QOTD:Really great apples

  • NY Pete

on my way over to NYC to smack the crap out of the elf … 🙂

  • Luca

Gary…you're obviously dying to do a Jets video blog so why not cut the crap and do a weekly Jets update (maybe with a few sips of wine along the way). You know you want to.
There are plenty of wine and Jets nuts like myself (I'm from the uk and have flown over several times to see the Jets…when we were terrible!) who would love to see it.

QOTD: Wild raspberries. I used to have a job ditch digging/clearing and there were the most amazing raspberries that would hang out over into the water to catch some sun and nobody would get to them because it meant you had to be in the ditch so I’d cruise through on my route eating these things to offset the fact I was in the ditch…

I’ve gotten the cotton candy play on several domestic cabs, including some high-end stuff, and it’s at least a ten yard penalty repeat 2nd down.

  • M4rtyn

Mott nailed it… watermelon… delicious, and huge

  • AllanJonassen

Is it too early to wish for THHEEEEE COOOOOOOOOUUUUUCHHH!!!!!!!!! :0)

  • Klueck

    Mangoes. A thousand times mangoes.

  • QotD: Cranberries, with apples being a close second…

Yellow Tail Shiraz, have only tried the Merlot, will give the Shiraz a shot next time I go cheapo…

  • QOTD: Peaches!

  • Anonymous

If any of these wines were a ‘higher institution’, I’d think it would be ‘Hemingway’s’, in Key West. Or whatever dive Charles Bukowski drank in.

QotD – one fruit? God, I hate you. Blueberries. For 24/7 consumption, not too sweet (like fresh fig), not too tart( passion fruit – needs to be sweetened). Coconuts’ water would be good, essential nutrition, but Blues have tons of anthocyins, flavinoids, and antioxidant property, w/out too much sugar.

  • Phredd3

    NYPete, where are you?

  • Dusanmal

    QOTD : Forelle Pears
Petite, freckled and red-cheeked, the bell-shaped Forelle pear, pronounced For-ELL, is a miniature variety and one of the smallest varieties of pears. Rather crisp-textured and fairly firm even when ripe, this is one of the very few pears that changes color as it ripens. When ready to eat, this pear’s greenish skin turns a brilliant yellow and is characteristically marked with contrasting reddish freckles called lenticels, its distinctive feature. When a sharp, strong pear flavor is desired, the Forelle is a perfect choice.

    Peaches

I love the Florida comment — that was awesome!

  • Blackberries grow all over H County homie

QOTD: Mango <- on an island, all day every day. Can't get enough of them

  • winesaurusrex

    Love Strawberries

The dollar difference between Yellowtail and Starbucks is the alcohol. 🙂

  • QOTD: Very difficult to pick an absolute favorite fruit. Like Mott, love melons – cantaloupe especially. I really love peaches and plums as well

Not gonna lie… I first started drinking Yellow Tail when I got into wine

  • Lvine

    Grapes!
