But LOADED With Diced RAW onions’ Chilis Dogs Rock Too

  • Latour90

After i paid $95 for a Latour1990 in1993 i prmised myself I’d never pay ove $100. for a bottle of wine. I never promised that my wife wouldn’t for gifts for me.

QOTD#1.. Mustard and saurkraut or onions. Ketchup is for wimps.
QOTD#2.. Although I didn’t pay $100..it’s over $100 now. 1991 Dominus an incredible wine with a finish that i think i’m still tasting 10 years after.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

You killed it, bro!!! This is exactly what we needed to keep it on a roll!

    Ketchup, Mustard, Onion, Relish

QOTD 1: No “Thunder” wristband, but have the green one.
QOTD 2: I’m going with a 1970 Grahams…its the first one that popped in m head. Must have been good…lol.

    T-Minus 3 episodes to #900

Great way to start the week! Awesome show, awesome wines. (I think it’s odd you talked about hot dogs- my mouth was watering for a steak or gourmet pasta after listening to your commentary on the wines.) I’ve always had to have mustard on my hot dogs and I love sauerkraut with them, too.

A guy I used to date a long time ago treated me to expensive wines, but I was too young and naive to appreciate them. But thanks to him, I love wine! We may have to go out and try one of these you sampled today. Thanks for a delightful show.

yeeeehaaaaw! can’t wait to watch this one.

QOTD I: Mustard, and most of the time it’s just simple yellow.
QOTD II: Haven’t had one yet. They’re still in the cellar. $100.00 bottles are a rare expenditure for me but I’m certainly open to accepting gifts ๐Ÿ˜‰ Seriously, I think part of the allure of studying and buying wine is to see how many wines that you bought for waaay less are $100.00 wines by the time you drink them.

I just drank the chateau smith haut lafitte; interested to compare.

  • You are so funny!! I think it was a Dom Pรฉrignon, long time ago, not a big champagne fan, enjoyed it but would not $pend my money on it. Oeps, I forgot, we had one at Aureole in Las Vegas, but the snotty service influenced a proper review. I only remember the bill, which was not in balance with the service, food, or wine. I did however recently, deeply enjoyed some local wines from my “hood” here in Fauquier county: the 2009 Merlot (young but velvety) and the Petit Manseng (incredible) by Pearmund Cellars and the mature, dry, and complex Sumerduck Rose by Roger Ford. Your book rocks by the way!

I really enjoyed the show today. Last week’s theme was lame. Yes, let’s see more of the wines that some of us may never get an opportunity to taste. I think it’s fun to live vicariously through your wine tasting experience of these higher end wines. Spicy mustard, extra onions on that dog please.

  • Anonymous

QOTD — ketchup; but sometimes with ‘kraut.
QOTD — Its actually been a while, I need to drink some of those up instead of looking to the deep past!

  • Anonymous

I love it! NY Pete has become the Lurker police.

  • Forgot! No hot dog thanks, rather a good bradwurst with sauerkraut and onions, and Euro mustard. Pair it with a trocken German Riesling? Guess I do have to switch to that fruit phone…lol…http://www.pairitapp.com/index.htm

I am on IE 8 and I agree with Winecrazy. Every day when I sign in on discus it goes through the loading process and then I still have to hit the refresh button before it registers. What really frosts my bejongas is that I have to re-enter my password every day. I live alone and our comments are not State secrets.

Mustard, chile, and onions on my dog
Best $100 wine. Depends on where the $100 went. To a restaurant, not too many as this is a price category that is often populated by middle range wines with inflated prices so the $45 bottle is suddenly $100 and that was a 2001 Vayqueras at Ristra in Santa Fe in 2009. $100 at the store, that was a 1989 Leoville Las Cases that was bought in 1995 for $105 and consumed this year at New Years in a vertical tasting of Leoville Las Cases at a friends house in Tulsa that included 10 bottles from 1961-1995.
Good to see GV back to real wines. Talk about from the ridiculous to the sublime. The lineup for this episode was probably more expensive than the whole lineup from last week.

  • Senator

QOTD 1: First thing I do when I hit the ballpark is to grab a beer. Second thing I do is get my polish with lots of kraut and lots of mustard. GV, you know how to roll a dog!

QOTD 2: 2001 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore. I had it on a cruise ship in French Polynesia of all things. Could have been the setting, but it blew my socks off. Wait… I wasn’t wearing socks. OK, if I were wearing socks it would have blown them off.

Yo NY Pete, Time to Suit-Up, The Jets might be lookin’ for Cornerback Help……
    ;o)

This is a great episode. It is an expensive episode as well. If you spent the money, the ratio is pretty good to have a good tasting wine. Isn?t it?
Qotd: Ketchup only, I love the taste of ketchup.
    Rqotd: joseph phelps cab.

  • Geez, it’s actually scary knowing the little things you like in life are my favs. Yes, sauerkraut and mustard are my go-to condiments on dogs. I may even add some onions.

I must say I enjoyed last week’s “grocery store” episodes (hardly “lame”) though it is nice to know how good a $100 wine can be but still venture a guess if I would still buy one without any prior tasting etc? That being said, I may spring for the last one based on your excitement for the Hermitage.

QOTD #1: Please, do you have to ask. “Yes” I have that wristband. It’s wrapped around my stickshift in my car.

QOTD #2: ’97 Dominus and the ’90 DP

    Cheers!

P.S. Revis smeevis, who cares, it won’t matter vs the likes of Buffalo but I must say, I needed to run to the shower when you mentioned Cindy Crawford in those cut-off jeans in the Pepsi commercial. Yikes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6OG3F4DH-E&feat

  • Oh yes, nice shirt.

  • sethsethy

damn, i wish i was there to finish off those bottles!

qotd: ive never had a $100 bottle of wine ๐Ÿ™ the most ive spent is $35. maybe someday though..

I like my dogs with mustard and ketchup. Kraut and relish are fine, but not needed. I have tasted several $100+ wines and not been all that impressed for the money. I think $50 – $60 wines have generally given better experiences for the dollars. I was interested to hear that cotton candy was a good taste. My memory is not good, but I thought a recent show panned a wine that tasted like cotton candy. I am always ready to learn from the master V and understand why cotton candy is good in a $100 wine.

good hot dogs….either straight or with sriracha

  • mayo onion on a dog

  • Anonymous

    QOTD1: sauerkraut
QOTD2: the @troutmonster dropped a serious bottle of Hermitage a couple of months ago while a few of us were watching the basketball playoffs a little while ago. I somehow don’t remember the name, though it was 95pts Parker.

  • Luc

    Don’t like HDs…
QOTD2 : Domaine du Colombier, Hermitage, 2007 =ยญ> huuuuuuuge, deep and complex syrah from the Hermitage hill.
Good show G! Keep on grooving… yeah.

Loved the energy to start the week! Also loved that Mott gets your sign language- how he got botox out of pointing fingers is beyond me! ๐Ÿ˜‰
    sideQOTD: mustard and cheese
realQOTD: 1986 Chateau Lafite Rothschild bordeaux (well, it was $100 at some point in its’ trajectory)

  • Anonymous

As one example of many: I had a $100 champagne that was absolute crap- the only thing worse was the host’s attitude. A $12 bottle of Albarino beat the snot out of it- even according to the guest attending who hated white wine. Packaging often stands in for substance in oh, so many ways…

  • j carey

Grenache always shows better early than Cab and Syrah.. cumon folks.. the Cab is in the dumb period after showing well in its first 2 years.. it will shut down till 9 -10 years old..

  • Anonymous

    Ketchup, mustard, relish
    Kathryn Kennedy 1985 Cab!
You deserve some Les Cretes after that ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Just Jack

Hey Jim: I certainly wouldn’t deign to speak for Grand Master G, but I think he was talking about the hint of actual flavor in this wine vs the cotton candy sweetness that often indicates fakety fake. It is that sticky sweetness that he refers to in the earlier references you mention, IMHO.

  • Vanswirlypants

An everyday dog gets a touch of mayo and a whomp of mom’s homemade green tomato relish. Killer good especially if you toast your buns. A splurge dog has it all on it… kraut, chili, onions, cheese, and mustard. Don’t forget the bib.

Best $100 plus was my first $100 plus. A bottle of 1997 Insignia. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSilk.

  • Chicago Style Hot Dog only – Never ketchup only mustard, green relish, celery salt, hot peppers, tomato wedges and onions!!

QOTD: I had the please of sharing a bottle of 1998 La Grande Dame to celebrate my girlfriends wedding!! Although it was over $100 – It was worth every penny!!

  • WHAT?! A pat on the back for the Prez on the $50 bill. Whatever, you only pay with fifties! ; )

    Great Epi!!! Love the excitement.

SQOTD: Just like you baby!!! Mustard and Kraut. For real, almost everytime. My wifey hates it.

QOTD: This is a joke, never had a $100 bottle.

  • A dumb Rhein king

SQOTD: Hot dogs I normally have with ketchup and mustard. Put some kielbasa sausage or corned beef in sauerkraut and wow ausgezeichnet!

QOTD: I literally just answered this for 506, so please reference that ep ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Anonymous

qotd 2: hrrrmmmm….. I don’t drink many $100 bottles. A few years ago I had a 1963 Warre’s Vintage Port which is probably nearing the best thing to ever enter my mouth. I’m not sure how much was paid for it, as I didn’t buy it. I’m not sure the current retail on that bottle, or how much it originally cost. Easily worth a hundred (or three) to me though.

  • Alexandre-CF

    Oww, That was rough.
what did you do with the rest of the wine?

Crazy 94 Pts show, with rough wines.

QOTD 1: Ketchup, lots of pepper, real tomato sauce and a Brazilian type of fries.

QOTD 2 : Never had one, a wine that costs 100 Dollars in the US in Brazil costs something like 300 Dollars or more. Like an Almaviva from Chile in the US is 80 Dollars in Brazil its 260-270 Dollars ( and yes, Chile is almost our neighbor) .

My QOTD : gary why Wine Library donยดt ship wine to Brazil ?

    Keep rocking dude.

When I’m at the ballpark, ketchup, mustard, onions.
When I taste a $100 bottle, I’ll let you know. BTW – hopefully a big day for the WL staff. Do you let them try after the show? Also, never made it into the WL “high end” room.

  • Alexandre-CF

    i forgot , No wristband. ๐Ÿ™

  • Anonymous

Sub-QOTD: I usually go with mustard and pickle relish, but I prefer with chili.

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve ever had a $100 or so wine, so there we go. Ballin’ today, Gary. At least we can sort of tell that there IS a quality difference between wines of the caliber of last week’s and today’s ballin’ wines.

  • Y on the wristband thanks to your gift last week!

  • Prasm

Nice – a show for “Ballers”! Gotta rip on Gary a bit – the 05 Smith Haut Lafitte is available “other places” for as low as $69.99? What’s up GV?

Seriously – nice show with awesome wines.

QOTD #1: Right in line with GV on this – hot dog with mustard and sour kraut.

QOTD #2: With only about a dozen sampling points I would say my best $100 bottle of wine was the 2004 Conterno Fantino Sori Ginestra Barolo – friggen awesome with only about an hour of air and will get better by the minute for the next 20 years plus.

  • Kerry Arrowood

    Hi Gary,
My name is Kerry Arrowood and I would love for you and my father to have an opportunity to meet. He has started a new winery called ” Amapola Creek”. I just know if you got your hands on some of these Monte Rosso Zinfandels from my father’s estate you would be blown away!! I am hoping to get you to come out and check out our family winery. I would love to meet you as well….hopefully you get this!! I KNOW YOU WILL ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cheers!

  • A dumb Rhein king

Oh yeah, almost forgot the other SQOTD: no.

  • Toke-Dawg

QOTD: Dijon mustard and banana peppers. Trust me.

  • Louisiana George

Q1: haven’t eaten a hot dog in about 22 years, by choice – too much mystery meat in there.
Q2: 1990 Opus One in about 2000, with family

  • Anonymous

    Nope don’t have a band…why is that? eh ~ =p

qotd: 100$ in the USA or 100$ IN canada which is like 50$ USA wine. DP was pretty darn tasty tho that was 200, umm

  • QOTD: Mustard and Pickles!

  • jrouss

No I don’t have a wrist band. You’d think I’d at least get one for being a wine club c member.

QOTD: Standard Dog — katchup and yellow mustard.

QOTD: Best $100 wine: I loved seasmoke pinot noir, and had a $250 cal. cab that was like silk though don’t know the name.

  • QOTD2: 2007 Caymus CS Select

  • Anonymous

    QOTD1 — sauerkraut and mustard
QOTD2 — thumbs down on this question; never had one
