  • SQOTD: Hot dog with yellow mustard
    QOTD: 1999 Tignanello

Rocky IV & Cindy Crawford Pepsi commercial – awesome!

  • mikeycook

QOTD1: Mustard, relish, and sauerkraut, but I’ll settle for 2 out of 3.

QOTD2: First bottle I ever paid over $100 for a bottle was the 1990 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle, on my honeymoon (in 2000) at a restaurant in the Rhone. Still the best bottle of wine I’ve ever tasted.

I’d love to see some tastings of some older wines to look at how some of the big wines on the show can evolve over time.

QOTD1: Mustard and Sauerkraut, hittin’ it up like you GV

QOTD2: Hard to say, I’ve had quite a few $100 bottles, so I’ll just say a few
    ? Flor De Pingus 2004
    ? Pol Roger Brut 1998
    ? Clos du Papes 1990
    ? Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 2004
    ? Michel-Schlumberger Deux Terres Cabernet 2004

Kraut and mustard, 90% of the time. The other 10% kraut is sadly not an option!

Gary, In France why is it that you can see multiple vintages of multiple wines from all the great regions: Bdx, Burgundy, and the Rhone! Here in the US, you have to search out or buy in auction to get anything older than 3-5 years of age? Maybe its the proximity to chateau cellars? The need for American retailers and distributors to unload the wines from their inventory because of the cost to hold wines? The need for American to stuff their cellars full?

I can’t tell you how nice it was to be able to go to a shop and BUY the DRINK NOW vintages of Bordeaux from 99, 01, 02, 03 and 04! You could also buy the greats, 98 (rb), 00, and 05 easily. 2003 btw is a great deal there as it is NOT a vintage liked by many French palates, one of the better deals there on pricing.

Anyway, whats up? Why can’t I go to the wine library or any other shop and buy at a decent price a variety of the more recent drink now wines from Bordeaux of the better names?

  • Grill Factor

QOTD 1: Yellow American Mustard + Ketchup + Relish

QOTD 2: only $100+ bottle of wine I have had is the Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz from Australia. The 2000 rocks…

  • Rybyrnes

    Gary,

Whats up with you guys not at least decanting those big boys on air? Maybe you guys did it off air and poured them back in to the bottle or did something else to get some air flowing…just curious how they might taste after some time…I’ve heard you say big wines deserve that kind of attention! Great stuff though..last weeks shows were great too. Kind of highlights my current frustration in wine picking lately. I can honestly say at this point I can be more pleased in picking out beer than any wine on a day to day basis. I assume it’s because of the over saturation in the wine market with poor wines but at $15 I can buy a superb 6 pack of fine belgian brew than I can spending $15 on a bottle or wine. I understand the input costs might affect the price points on wine versus beer but just a thought. Keep charging!

  • Great episode! Always fun watching you nodding head. 3 for 3 is definitely a welcomed wine ‘sode.

Side-QOTD: Ketchup and Relish does it for me.
QOTD: A wine that hundre-wwhhhhaaaaattt! Uhh.. never had the opportunity and luxury to try such wine. Maybe some day soon.

Ah, and almost forgot… no wrist band. I’m too cheap to buy one, and you haven’t gifted one yet 🙂

  • Randall

    AMEN!! AMEN!! AMEN!!

  • Haven’t posted in a while and am coming out from under the “Lurker Rock”

Don’t have the Thunder wrist-band but would LOVE ONE!!!

QOTD 1: mustard, bbq sauce (I heart bbq sauce), relish

QOTD 2: Don’t think I have ever drank a $100 bottle of wine…YET The most expensive wine I have drunk was a 2006 Ferrari Cararo Tresor…it was delish!!

  • Probably should get a thunder band…

    QOTD1: Mustard, relish, white onions

QOTD2: I’ll just go with the most recent tasty $100 bottle: Royal City Syrah from Charles Smith. Drank it too young, but I have more…

QOTD 1: I gotta have mustard and sliced peppers/jalapenos – Hey, I’m from Texas; I can’t help it!

QOTD 2: CKC here, so not quite $100, but the best bottle I’ve ever had was some Tor 2006 Cab on my friend’s dime (who is also a master somm).

    2004 lafite rothschild

good show GV, been lurking for a while, nice to see a high end France show….would be nice to see a white burg episode

  • Gary, sorry!, should have piped up. I thought the supermarket shows were good! Ya gotta give the guy in Kalamazoo a chance to calibrate their pal to yours. Sorry you got heat! May have to look up the Ferraton after the review!

QOTD: Straight mustard and not that yellow stuff I’m talking the real deal.
QOTD II: Hmm, guess it’s been a while though I am hoping to change that this weekend. Last Ben Franklin was probably a Bollinger which was delicious.

  • Anonymous

1st QOTD: Onions, relish, mustard, ketchup
    2nd QOTD: 1982 Lynch Bages

Go high end Gary! Loved the show. Would love to see some SERIOUS Priorat’s and AGED Piedmont Nebbiolo!!!!

Wow, I… ummm, wow, really? “It’s like China explodes into Mexico and then you smell it.” Wow that is awesome. You actually come up with this on the fly hah? You are my steeeeeeenking hero man! And then I paraphrase here, “It’s like getting the Drago death punch and then on your way down to your tasty death you get hugged by Cyndi Lauper in her prime. Gary, I’m speechless. Okay enough GV worship. Question, which wines are who? I mean which one is Hulk Hogan, which is Rocky and which is Mike Tyson? LOL Last comment. What do you mean when you say it is smells like tobacco? Tobacco is rather complex. It depends if you are talking about a maduro or a natural wrapper, if it’s a Cuban, Nicaraguan Dominican puro etc. Also, I wonder if you don’t mean it smells a bit like cedar, cause great cigars are almost inevitably aged in cedar and cedar to me smells much like cinnamon and sawdust. Anywho these are my thoughts. I absolutely love your show. My wife and I have read your book several times and I’m seriously thinking about starting a cooking blog. Too personal for this post I guess but, what I’m saying again is thank you for putting out such a consistently entertaining show sir. Blessings to you and yours.

    oh hello QOTD:
    1. Ketchup, Mustard and onions, pretty blah I guess.
    2. Never had an expensive wine. I’m pohh son can’t be affordin no 100 dollah bottles ah vino. Some day, some day.

  • Anonymous

    Like the show – again!!!

    No wristband.

Normally Ketchup. Add…..sometimes mustard, and sauerkraut(when on hand), and cheese.

    Have only had 2 or 3 Dom’s.

  • FullOnNelson

QOTD 1: Just a dog and the bun. No I’m not kidding. Sometimes I even toss the bun.

QOTD 2: 2004 Yalumba The Octavius

  • La Francaphone

Great show. While I can appreciate the reviews of the grocery store wines, I prefer to hear about the more serious stuff, especially Bordeaux. More please. BTW, “Haut” is pronounced “oh”. Both the initial “h” and final “t” are silent.

QOTD 1: Kraut and mustard, sometimes onions.
QOTD 2: most recently a 2004 Chateau Angelus. Still young, but holy yummy bat man.

  • Anonymous

    Oh……. my…….. goodness………!

    Thank you for the reminder!

  • Loved the bit about Cindy Crawford in her prime! 🙂

    QOTD 1: Mustard and onions.

QOTD 2: I’ve had no more than a dozen $100+ bottles over the years. It’s between a 1999 Bordeaux and a Pahlmeyer

  • Supertrirunner

where do you get 04 lafite for $100

  • Anonymous

I’ve spent an hour or more sidetracked on this site.

Read the bio’s on everyone and watch the videos and check out the wines.

    VERY interesting!!!

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo castello, whaaaat did Ya do wit Abbot ????????? :oD

  • Supertrirunner

First time watching your show ever!!! Awesome stuff. I am going to spend the next 4+ hours watching some older episodes.

    Best $100 = 1990 rauzan-segla

  • Supertrirunner

    i’ll take a pallet

  • No thunder band… But great to see you brought the THUNDER! Be good to see you review a Penfolds Grange! Now thats THUNDER!

    Best $100 – ’98 Volnay Côte-d’Or! Just delish!

  • John Rogers

If only I could. 3 wines costing over 3oo bones not going to happen anytime soon. Maybe one wine for a special day. I have to admit they sounded spectacular especially the last one, Ferraton Ermitage.

QOTD: Brown mustard and habernero chutnety(hot and sweet) makes a great hotdog.
QOTD: Had an ice wine from Canada that cost meet 50 bones for a split but worth every
    penny.

  • Anonymous

Thank You for the Haut lesson!!!

  • John D.

Thanks for bringing the Thunder G! Just what I needed after a crappy day.

QOTD #1: 90% of the time, ketchup with my dog. But I am slowly moving to mustard. The palate is evolving. But I CANNOT stand sauerkraut. Bleh! lol.

QOTD #2: Never popped a $100 bottle. I did have a 1999 Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape earlier this year though. I know the critics aren’t huge fans of that vintage, but it ripped my face off. Loved it!! Most of my $100+ bottles are Bordeaux from recent vintages and they’re all sleeping in my cellar. I just can’t bring myself to taste them so young.

  • Randall

The full explanation will be in next month’s “Haut” Magazine. With additional discourse on the subject by her buddy Barry…
    😉

  • waynooo daaa wino

    Yo G, NIIIIIIIICE THUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNDDDDRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
    iiiinn daaaaaa HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

qotd1: Ketchup, mustard, relish & Loooooooooooooooooooots of ONIONS………..

qotd2: Have NOT exceeded 80 Bones for a Bottle of Vino as of Yet………

  • Anonymous

Wow, you painted a pretty amazing picture of what a N. Rhone Syrah can bring to the table when it’s really really good.

It’s just funny (and sad) how it seems that at that price point it’s often hard to beat Cote Rotie/Hermitage in QPR but then even the entry level bottles seem to sell at 40-50 ?, at least in Europe. Of course it’s possible to find great values from the lesser appellations in the north but those two are really where it’s at.

QOTD: I’ve had so few $100/100? wines and none of them were more than 5 or 6 six year old so can’t really answer this qotd. Best wines in general must have been Jamet Cotie Rotie 2005 and Beaucastel 2005

  • Anonymous

    Heh..YYYYYYYYaaaaaaaabbbbbbottttttttttttt!

  • Rimarfish

QOTD: 2004 Domaine des Relagnes Les Petits Pieds d’Armand Chateauneuf du Pape (now called Olivier Hillaire).

  • Hot Dog QOTD: Mustard and relish.
When we were kids we used to put crunchy peanut butter on the buns.
Ketchup is for fries, not hot dogs or burgers.

  • QOTD: Best $100 bottle? Hard to remember prices, but probably a ’77 Fonseca Port, which we had 12-15 years ago.

  • Anonymous

Good to see you putting on the Ritz GV!

QOTD!: It’s gotta be mustard. kraut and pickles if you’re going for serious hot dogs.
QOTD2: The 2 wines that stand out for me are both over $100. 2007 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet after a 3 and 1/2 decant and 2006 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Dr. Crane Vineyard. Unreal wine experiences. I could have sat there and “sniffy-sniffed” the wines for hours. These were just wine appreciation life changing experiences.

  • Hot Dog QOTD: Ketchup. Call me unexciting. 🙂

So, they make wines that cost over a hundred bones? Huh, who’da thunk. I guess my $17.99 Schloss Vollrads Riesling isn’t “all that” then, is it?

  • Anonymous

Well, to add to my earlier comment. The 07 Dominus kicks ass. It took about 7 hours to open in the decanter, but when it did…wow! Beautifully balanced wine. Even at $130 dollars it is an excellent value.

  • IB71

Favourite 100$ wine – a red burgundy – Faiveley, Clos des Cortons Monopole (have tried both 2007 & 2006 recently). Pinot Noir of real class!

  • Penfolds Grange was reviewed here in episode #506.

  • Anonymous

I think I have six. Three green, one yellow and 2 purple. I need a black one!

  • Markjosephmcnabb

Great show Gary! I think it would be fun if you kept some of the focus to the “big boy” wines.
    QOTD1:Mustard
    QOTD2:2001 Peter Michael Les Pavots

  • Eacarrr

I read all the reviews, and one caught my eye… I cut and pasted into your search bar, and nothing was found… Pahlmeyer …. review it…. please??

  • Allan

    Bringing back the Thunder-show!

I still think 100 bones is a lot to drop on a single bottle of vino. There’s soo much great ones out there for only a fraction of the price, but you probably knew that, right?!!? (Seek out the 2007 Varqueyras, GV showed in the beginning of the show, from Charbonniere)(Or anything from Charbonniere in general!!)

    Qotd:

I had alot of expensive shit in the past, comes to mind Monfortino from Conterno which is alot more than 100, (the 1990). Haut Brion 1994 which was great. Runrig 2003 which was too young. And who could forget 1995 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill, that blew my mind….. And so on…………………………..

    But….

I feel i’m standing at a cross road at the moment. I can/will only spend 100 or more once a year, these days. I’m becomming more of a casual fan of wine now. . . . sorry wine world!

Great Show G, reminded me of who i once was. Now! Let’s move on…………. 🙂

    Cheers!

  • Allan

Hey dude! Is it castello or costello???

  • Allan

Oh forgot,,,,,,,,,, No wristband, no hotdog for me! Sorry again…!

  • Anonymous

    QOTD 1) Spicy Mustard ALONE!!!
QOTD 2) Hmmm… Recently? 2004 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin. $140 ish, but it fits the bill.
