lines of the day, ‘I despise the Patriots to such an extent that it almost suffocates me’ and ‘Mott’s head just went crazy like a bobble head so I know I got it right’

I loved it when Mott chases Gary out of the room in the search for a clean glass. GV basically infers that although Mott couldn’t find clean glasses, he’ll find them no problem. Mott smacks this one out of the park when none are found, much to his delight and GV’s annoyance!

  • What kinds of beer have you had? If you like cider, I bet you’d like the Indomitus we tried. It’s very sour. Gary was right about the Granny Smith components. I got a bitter nectarine flavor. There are a good deal of sours out there you might enjoy. Thanks for watching.

  • I would never try to pull you away from wine! I’m learning it myself.

  • bahahahaa I’m never going to live down the Mark.

    Thanks Greg!

wow. higher quality video and like the today show – thanks for the pointer.

  • You got that right! I confused the Jets and Dolphins. I was pretty nervous. I owe Wes Welker an apology. Wayne Chrebet too 😉

After that gaffe, I figured I should shut up about football, although I am a huge fan and do fantasy.

  • West Coast IPA is typically really big on grapefruit. You’re right. The doubles are sweeter. Give Lagunitas Maximus a try.

  • Wine glasses are actually ideal for capturing the nose and delivering flavor. More often than not when Garrett Oliver does a beer pairing dinner he’ll use wine glasses to serve his beer.

  • xo

  • I haven’t tried that one. I will seek it out. thanks!

Cool show, how ironic, their doing wine on beer tv.

  • We haven’t been aging beer as long as wine is his point.

  • I will do that! I’m a Boston guy. Cleveland is behind me. You nailed it. I have a special affinity for California and Colorado beers.

  • As a beer guy who watches WLTV to expand his wine knowledge and pallette, this is an easy QOTD. I’m always expanding my beer pallette as I drink it near daily. My go to beer would be Troeg’s Nugget Nectar. Even though it’s a seasonal (Feb-Mar), I make sure to hoard several cases of it each year for year-round consumption. Currently though, I have a mini-keg of Bell’s Two Hearted Ale which is equally phenomenal.

I don’t have a go to beer but I go to local bar and just ask the bartender to surprise me with what they have on tap.

  • $10 a bottle is for a 750ml bomber bottle as it’s called for beer, which is your normal wine bottle size.

SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY. I love the whole line but the creme brulee beer is particularly interesting

  • I am not sure the beer world could handle an equivalent of Gary Vee 🙂 Just like the wine world might not be able to handle its own equivalent of the beer wench. Oh wait, what am I talking about? I think it is a brilliant plan…

  • Chocolat: tastes like a liquified Hershey’s candy bar! Pretty awesome chocolate stout.

  • When I am not traveling and stationed in the Bay Area, my go-to beer that I actively drink at home and in the local bars is Russian River “Pliny the Elder” — which Mike mentioned in the episode. I go back and forth between the Russian River Blind Pig (which is harder to find, but some may argue that it is a more delicious beer) and Pliny. But, in general, my rule of thumb when it comes to “every day” swill is drink local. I prefer to drink beer as close to its source as possible. This ensures freshness, proper storage and serving, as well as helps to environment (low carbon footprint FTW!)

My favorite Summer beer styles = IPAS, PILSNERS, BERLIINER WEISS, LAMBICS, WITS

Great show. As a beer evangelist, I was really into it. Next up … beer and pork product pairing. I can see it now…

  • Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale was one of my major epiphany beers. It was my first IPA, and the very beer that turned me into a hophead!

    Cheers!

  • I agree with Mike, the Saison is a beautiful style — very palate friendly, super dry and crisp, and pairs tremendously well with food!

  • Jon,

Ha! You should hear some of the other terms we use to describe lambics and sours — horse blanket, manure, barnyard …

And once again, I agree with Mike: sometimes the worse the aroma, the better the taste!

These beers are VERY much like cheese — once you can get through the pungent and overwhelming aroma, the flavor is well worth it.

    Great show!

    QOTD: Stone Pale Ale!
I never turn down a Belgian or Belgian-style. Hennepin is just 6 bones at Trader Joes!

  • Jrouss

I love yingling, but I can’t get it in Wyoming. By the way hope you come out here Gary on the book tour.

The reason I don’t expand my beer palate more is that I just don’t like bitter beers, or pale ales that have such a strong citrus component.

  • Availability is a funny thing. I have absoultely no problem getting my share of Pliny the Elder up here in Seattle which is also my answer to the QOTD.

This guest wasn’t my favorite. He reminded me of my older brother who I can’t stand.

  • SteveF

My go to beer is Hitachino Nest White Ale. Mike have you every tried it?

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/glassware

They’ve got Champagne glasses, wine glasses, and brandy snifters as recommended glassware for certain beers

  • Loved this show! I’m more into beer than I am wine – simply because I’ve been drinking it much longer. Looks like you had a great time filming it as well
QOTD pt1: NOTHING. I’m so down to try any new beers I see out and about.
QOTD pt2: I have too many “go to” beers, because sometimes I’m in the mood for a lager, sometimes an IPA, sometimes a wheat, etc etc etc. Somethings I always keep on hand are : Shiner Bock (out of TX), Fat Tire or one of the other New Belgium beers, Yuengling (ANY true son of NJ has this in his fridge! also i have to get this shipped to me in CO because can’t get it west of the Mississippi River), or a Leinenkugel wheat variety

  • So you’re saying you have an awesome older brother? 😉

  • Bill

Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold. Great stuff. Can be found mainly in Westchester, NY.

Wow, is this the first time Mott’s missed a Link it Up? Great Avery shout outs- I was able to visit there & take a tour while in Denver in February. Great people, great place, & fantastic beer. I think I tried 10-15 of their brews. several of which are not available commercially.

QOTD Mike: Probably if anything, wine. When I’ve already got more wine to explore than I know what to do with, I have to make a conscious effort to try a new craft beer every now & again. That being said, I’ve tried close to 100+ different beers & have bottles of Jolly Pumpkin La Roja Brooklyn No 2, Saison Dupont, and Leelanau Whaleback White waiting to be consumed.

QOTD Gary: I try to switch it up when I’m drinking at home just because there’s always something else to try, but if I’m bringing a 6-pack to a party, my defaults are Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald in the winter, Bells Oberon in the summer, and Goose Island Honkers Ale in the fall/spring.

Mike, just moved to Cleveland two months ago- loving the Great Lakes Brewing Company here! How much of their stuff have you tried?

  • Jim S.

Loved this show! Great back and forth between two smart beverage guys. Could @schneidermike be a regular guest on the show? He brought out the best in Gary, imho.

  • Randall

    Sorry to butt in, but…
Had I been judging this beer (blind) the first time I had it, I would have bet money that it was from Belgium. And I usually don’t bet unless I’m almost POSITIVE that the outcome will be in my favor. That said, I first got this beer some years ago and it was (and I think it may still be) the best non-Belgian wit I’ve ever tasted…

  • Bear Republic Racer 5 is really great. Love Lagunitas IPA as well. Their Imperial Stout is outstanding. RRBC is always a go to no matter what. QOTD: right this second my go to is Rolling Rock(twist off and cheaper than Bud) when I’m at my local bar but go to at my home has to be Bison organic Chocolate Stout or Great White from Lost Coast Brewing Co. Awesome show, great guest, good to see Mott and K Murph get face time.

  • QOTD #2- Victory’s Golden Monkey- I’m drinking some right now.

  • Another guest episode & it’s not even wine!! PAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! (without even opening the bottle – i.e. viewing)

(Hopefully) only 3 more guest episodes this year.

  • Jutty!

  • Randall

    West Coast Represent!!
    🙂

Very entertaining show Gary-Greg! Mike-Mark was an interesting and entertaining guest. By the way Mike-Mark, as a teenager growing up in Minnesota in the 70’s my go-to beer was Blatz Light Cream Ale. Man I loved that stuff, but then again I considered Pabst Blue Ribbon an expensive high quality brew in those days.

QOTD1: Although I’m interested in expanding my beer palate I’ve always had a problem paying $7+ for a SINGLE bottle of ‘fine’ beer that I know nothing about versus plunking down that same $7+ on a SIX pack of a known commodity. If there was a “Robert Parker” (or Gary V) of beer out there providing expert advice that I trusted on “fine” beers, I suspect I would be willing to pay that $7+ on a 90+ point “fine” beer. But as it is, I continue to expand my “fine” wine palate on the weekends and placate my “generic” beer palate during the week by drinking Heineken (QOTD2) and Sam Adams (QOTD2).

  • Randall

That’s the first time I’ve ever heard anyone possibly prefer BP over Pliny. To each their own, I guess…
    🙂

  • I liked this guest too much. I thought this show was awesome… just like Seattle. Favorite big city in our country (OH SNAP… he just typed that!!!).

  • scottEJ

Great show guys!! Seriously good and excellent content on the beers. Living in Chi., I’ve noticed a real nice surge of craft breweries popping up all over and dotting the nooks-and-crannies of the city.

QOTD: Three Floyds, 1/2 Acre, Revolution, Goose Island. I’m fairly new to the game, but, I gotta say, it is something I greatly look forward to mixing up w/my wine habits. Thanks, Schneider Mike.

  • Randall

    Trying… not… to be… snobby…

*Or you could just cut to the chase and skip a lot of American-style saisons and try some Belgians…*

    Crap!! Didn’t make it.
    ;}

  • I’m west coast biased. But when you can roll out Stone, Green Flash, Lost Coast, North Coast, Bison, Ballist Point, Lagunitas, RRBC, Bear Republic, Marin Brewing Co, Moylans, Anderson Valley, Sierra Nevada, and Full Sail just to name a few you kind of see why.

  • Randall

    Mmmm… lambics, krieks, Flemish sours…
I’m sorry. What were we talking about again?
    😛

  • Great show first full show I’ve watched in a few years. Guess I am a true beer fan now.

When does Beer Library open up again?

  • Randall

Love the RR (good inits, btw).
Have you ever tried their stout? It’s Mm hmm good…

  • I agree Prasm, even some of the beer sites that are really big right now are a little too easy(in my opinion) on a lot of bigger named brewing companies and really I don’t get a lot of their scores sometimes. I have my go to guys(two of them) that I luckily can text when I’m at the store debating but my favorite way it to go to a bar and on occasion they will give you a taste of anything on tap. You get a highball glass of something and you can get a couple good swigs from it. Another way would be to get a bunch of friends together and everyone throws down $5 and do it as a group. Keep a tasting journal.

  • Randall

Thank you for your valuable input… NOT!!!!!
    🙁

  • SchneiderMike: Thank you so much for representin’ the craft beer aficionados out there! I will definitely try and keep up with your site. w00t! for the Racer 5. At a recent IPA/DIPA tasting here (and often other times), I used it as my benchmark beer.

QOTD1: Only things stopping me at the moment are $ and space. Being a student in a small apartment does not lend itself to cellaring. Not to mention I blew out a bunch of my cellar during my bachelor party weekend. I have my Vertical Epics ’05-’09 saved up.

QOTD2: I haven’t really had a go-to beer in a while, though I do often have them as per style. IPA (Racer 5), Pils (Prima), Russian Imperial Stout (Stone), etc. I guess if I had to choose a favorite, it would likely be Goose Island Mathilda.
