lines of the day, ‘I despise the Patriots to such an extent that it almost suffocates me’ and ‘Mott’s head just went crazy like a bobble head so I know I got it right’

I loved it when Mott chases Gary out of the room in the search for a clean glass. GV basically infers that although Mott couldn’t find clean glasses, he’ll find them no problem. Mott smacks this one out of the park when none are found, much to his delight and GV’s annoyance!

I am on tap at home, so my “go to” is Yuengling because the local store has limited choices

  • Randall

One Oregon ringer, eh? Not Rogue, Pelican Bay, Portland BC, etc? ๐Ÿ™‚

p.s. Mmmm… Russian River. That is all.

  • Hahahaha

J mascis is legendary but you must watch his live shows with some ear plugs. They/ dino jr. and him really redefined LOUD!

Yeah… the show was just super funny today. You guys had great chemistry. And when sports becomes the topic it gets really interesting/lively. And who does not love a ‘field trip’ through wine library?

I cannot wait to get to NJ and see Yo La Tengo at Maxwells (maybe for their 8 nights of Hanukkah) and then cruise to Wine Library–wherever that is. i have two/three reasons to go to NJ. The last reason would be to see the Devils play a game.

    Thanks again.

  • Loved the episode–I’m not sure what I think of the wood aging for beers, but I do enjoy the doubles, triples, and imperials coming out.

QOTD 1: Bombers vs six-packs… I have no idea why bombers are less likely to make it home with me, but it’s true.
QOTD 2: Surly Furious is #1 on the road, Summit IPA is #1 for home games.

  • Yeah buddy!

QOTD: I expand my beer palate seasonally. Now I’m not only having a Samuel Adams Summer Ale but I tried the Magic Hat summer seasonal (name escapes me). Each season I lean toward seasonal brew. I like Porter in the winter. At Total Wine & More Claymont DE, they have a nice selection. Nice variety.

I don’t have a go-to but my favorites tend to be amber and malty.

    Where’s the Guinness Bozo

  • This is a GREAT compliment! You watched it until the end!? THANK YOU!

  • Dan, you’re welcome and thanks for the compliment. Racer 5 is a great benchmark, but beware! You’re setting the bar really high with R5! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have some Goose Island Coffee Stout that I’m aging. I can’t wait to try it, but I will.

  • You’re welcome. Visit us at BelchingMonkey.com to get your beer fix or tweet me @belchingmonkey if you EVER have beer quandries.

  • Prasm, I want to be that guy. Give me a chance. I haven’t had near as many beers as Gary has had wines, but I am getting there!

  • Wow. Do you find that stuff has hallucinogenic qualities? I love the Monkey!

  • Anderson Valley Boont Amber is the 2nd best Amber of all. First? Great Lakes Eliot Ness

  • There are 2 GREAT things about Cleveland: Great Lakes Brewing Company and “leaving”. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have tried nearly ALL of the Great Lakes Brewing Company. Eliot Ness is one of America’s BEST beers. It’s so crazy delicious. It’s well balanced. The flavor is incomparable. The only thing close is Anderson Valley Boont Amber.

  • Love love love the lambics and sour ales. I could drink Girardin or Drie Fonteinen every day of the summer.

  • Randall

And darker ones during the winter…
    ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I have tried it! I love hitachino. Their espresso stout is HUGE coffee action!

  • Mike, you’re one what I call the “second tier” of beer. You’ve gone beyond Bud and Miller and are hitting the Yuenglings and Leinenkugels. Good for you! Those are still session beers, under 5.3%, as you continue to explore, watch your alcohol content. The more alcohol, the bigger the flavor, but the more punch it packs! (obviously)

  • Sorry. Did he beat you up? I won’t beat you up.

  • BEER WENCH!!! You were the one who originally told me about Pliny the Elder. I doubt you remember, but I asked you on Twitter what your favorite IPA was. I finally got to try it out in Seattle. You can see me (jet lagged) drink it for the first time at BelchingMonkey.com.

I also had a LOT of Damnation on tap while I was out there. That stuff blew my mind.

  • YES! Adventure! Great!

  • I love their big bottles. Their 12 oz beers are less impressive. Pumking is my favorite.

  • Randall, most beer geeks don’t prefer ANYTHING to Pliny the Elder – save perhaps for Pliny the Younger.

  • TROEGS!!! America’s most underrated brewery. The Troegs brothers are geniuses!

  • QOTD 1 : Six-packs make it home so much easier than the bombers… not quite sure why, but opening a bomber just seems so more involved than opening a 12 oz bottle or pint. Although it’s not that big a difference usually. The four-packs have been a nice development.

QOTD 2: #1 road game go-to right now is Surly Furious… #1 home game go-to right now is Summit IPA. Both are hoppy without being over the top ABV or texture. Good session beverages that are crisp and clean IPAs.

Loved the show guys–hope to see some Double IPA tastings down the road. Or maybe pair some belgians with lucky charms, some hefes with captain crunch, and stouts with cinnamon toast crunch.

Mike’s QOTD: Opportunity and cash, mostly. I’ve tried a bunch, but it’s tough to try all because craft brews are a bit more expensive and it’s hard to get a chance to just taste and drink because of whatever else is going on.

QOTD: My ‘go to’ beer would either be Anderson Valley Boont Amber ale for something light, or Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown ale for treat.

  • Randall

Mike… Awesome Show! Always love it when beer gets some time on WLTV.
So, I’m wondering what you think of the Anderson Winter Solstice?
p.s. Thanks for turning me on to something I haven’t ever had! (Indomitus)

QOTD: Depends on the occasion, season, other people’s tastes, food, etc.

  • jlilley

QOTD1: My deep and abiding love of IPA’s… I don’t really want to drink any other beer most of the time.
QOTD2: Diamond Knot or Dick’s IPA (both from Washington) or Pliny the Elder when I can find it.

  • Randall

    Ha! Good answer! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • I had a poker game for a while where everyone got a six-pack and you got to try six different beers. Not a bad move. Also there were some local brewing companies in St. Paul and surrounding areas that would give tours for $5 and you got to sample all they had on hand–and one Flat Earth Brewing company where the tasting was gratis.

  • Are there any good places to read up on aging? I thought that beer didn’t really change in bottles. Are we going to see some beer stores or beer companines popping up that are going to ‘cellar’ the beer for us so we can avoid temptation.

  • I don’t know much about aging yet Eric. It’s a new frontier that I am just now getting into.

  • Now put your hands up! oooOOoooOooOOoo!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Fun episode! Thanks to Gary V. for acknowledging that our country’s beer culture is even worse than our wine culture. Chimay Blue is my go to beer.

  • Karl

    Great show.
Mike I too am from Cleveland. Actually when you said Willoughby, that was awesome I am from beautiful Painesville. I am brewer, started at Harpoon and after I worked at a winery in Madsion OH (Debonne) and than have been Brewing at Full Sail in Hood River, OR. I loved the show and I checked out the belching monkey site, I am hooked man. I Live in Portland, OR and brewed with John Harris, brewer revolutionary. The scene is great out here.
Nothing is stopping my beer exploration I love all styles and get enough.

A T-Sip and beer. Ugh! I’ll see you next time, bailing for now.

  • Prasm

Mike, based upon what I saw of you on WLTV I’m willing to give you a chance. In fact, as I sit here on this Wednesday evening sipping on a Heineken, I’ve been surfing through BelchingMonkey, viewing videos and taking notes. This weekend I’ll be out and about looking a grade “A’ beer or two here in Omaha.

  • IPA IPA IPA that’s what I’m actively drinking. I rotate between Bear Republic Racer 5, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Lagunitas IPA and Stone IPA. At this very moment I have a torpedo in my hand. What keeps me from expanding my beer palette, hmmm, it would have to be information and opportunity.

Nice, Racer 5 and Hop Rod are my go to’s usually. I have the luxury of living in Oregon where we have a huge selection though.

  • Prasm

Adam, good suggestions. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the same passion for beer as I do for wine. Besides the lack of a “Robert Parker” for beer I think the other thing that may help popularize ‘fine’ beer appreciation would be a CellarTracker or GrapeStories equivalent for beer where beer enthusiasts world-wide could share their thoughts and experiences. Like many other wine enthusiasts, discovering CellarTracker propelled my wine interest to a whole new level, an equivalent site for beer would likely do the same for thousands of beer lovers around the world.

  • Great stuff! How’d you enjoy the Thunder Saddle??? A lot of fun hangin with GV isn’t it?

QOTD: Sam Adams is my go-to but I really like trying new things more than keeping it the same.

  • Really enjoyed this episode. Hilarious!!!

QOTD: I love good beer, but it’s hard to get good stuff in Iowa City. I have to wait till I go to Chicago. And then hope the wife will want to spend an hour in Binnys.

Side QOTD: dogfish 60 or 90 minute.

  • Ugh, can somebody email me when the show gets back to wine? The choco show was a stretch but my pal definitely does not like the beer.

Loving the Longhorn shirts! Ups to Gary for having Austin guests representing on the show!!! I am a HUGE supporter of Austin entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. The city breeds creativity. Absolutely loving the beer episode and learning more about beer and microbrews.

QOTD: My wine drinking keeps me from drinking a lot of different beers, but lately I have started drinking Belgium Ales to expand. Looking forward to getting more into microbrews. But my go to beer, and my personal all time favorite is Rahr Ugly Pug from Rahr Brewery in Ft. Worth, Texas. Its so silky, it puts Guinness to shame, eventhough I adore Guinness.

    Yay to craft beer!

Hell yeah Shiner Bock!!! What kind of Shiner?

  • Alexandre-CF

That was A phenomenal show. what a week. 95 pts again.
amazing guest, funny and bringing great stuff.

i think i never had a premium beer from US, time to try to find some.

QOTD 1: iยดm really focus in wine, brings much more thunder to my palate
QOTD 2: Brazilian premium beers, COLORADO, BADEN BADEN and some chimay once in a while

  • For better and/or worse I am with you. I have tried many beers over the years and not found anything I can remotely get past my PAL so I pazed as well.
