lines of the day, ‘I despise the Patriots to such an extent that it almost suffocates me’ and ‘Mott’s head just went crazy like a bobble head so I know I got it right’

I loved it when Mott chases Gary out of the room in the search for a clean glass. GV basically infers that although Mott couldn’t find clean glasses, he’ll find them no problem. Mott smacks this one out of the park when none are found, much to his delight and GV’s annoyance!

great show and as a new vayniac i had no idea there were quite a few shows dedicated to beer… so stoked to watch them! (thx gary!) as far as what keeps me from expanding my beer pallette— nothing really i drink a ton of beer although the amount of wine i drink well that tends to limit the beer, yadda yadda vice versa… a go-to beer… all of them… i like to drink local so Cottrell Old Yankee Ale should get some play- http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/61/179 and Olde Burnside Ten Penny Ale also gets love http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/823/2916 reppin West Hartford, Ct Peace Out, Love the Show!

  • Marianne

Love to try new beer. For a not so big town, monterey has a beer pub on cannery row with 100+ beers to try. Right now my go to beer is Boont Amber from Anderson VAlley.

    (CKC, lurker post #2)

Someone may have already mentioned this, in which case I apologize for the redundancy, but Rogue’s Grateful Dead beer is their popular German Maibock, the ‘Dead Guy Ale.’

QOTD #1: Nothing. I fell in love with beer first; wine is my new mistress.
QOTD #2: Jolly Pumpkin ‘Madrugada Obscura.’ Michigan brewery takes the sour/belgian yeast play and takes it to a totally different place outside of any recognizable beer category. Is it sacrilegious to say that I’ve gotten a little tired of the huge, west coast IPAs?

  • Fantastic show!
QOTD1: Nothing… I live in the best place on earth for craft beer == West Michigan. We’ve got Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, New Holland, Arcadia, etc and HopCat is the best Beer Bar in America.
    QOTD2: Bell’s Oberon (summer only)

  • boring. for only having 5 guest left this year with the last 2 taking us down to 3. Not sure where any of this is going this week. I felt like GV was on such a role. Until these last 2. I don’t get it. I see that most people loved yesterdays show and everyone seems to be liking this one. I guess I am the black sheep on these. Bring Sasha in MORE. Those are the best shows by far! The chemistry between dad and son that is the genius pairing with wine.

LOVED that episode. You guys had awesome chemistry. Plus, Mike, Mark, Marty, or whatever his name was is a Pats fan. Have actually tried the Oak Aged Yeti and really liked it. Used to live up the street from Marty’s- great Packi.

QOTD: I am definitely more of a wine drinker, but I really do enjoy good beer. Love Smuttynose IPA and recently had the Smuttynose Baltic Porter which was awesome. Also had the Long Trail Brewmaster Series IPA which was fantastic too.

Great show again! Great guest and highly enjoyable.

I don’t drink much beer these days – wine is my passion. But back in the day…..

I appreciated the discussion about flavor profiles and the palate.

    Fun stuff!

  • Jparadisee

Not sure when I’ve laughed this much at a show, really enjoyed it.

QotD1: I got into beer very early on so I’ve always tried many kinds of beer. During my college years we would go to the local beer distributor and buy 1/4 kegs of craft beer for parties. We would also get the cheap Saranac 1/2 keg for everyone else and hide the good one. Not many mid 1990’s college kids were drinking Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada at keg parties.

QotD2: No real go to beer as I am fully immersed in expanding my wine knowledge so I rarely go with beer these days. But Stella Artois was my ‘I’m at the bar grabbing a pint’ beer for a long time, and if I’m at Coney Island or watching a ball game Bud just works.

Great show Mark and Greg! Would love to try the White Birch Indomitus or the Oak Aged Yeti. By the way, Mike, you used the word humidity to describe the Oak Aged Yeti. What do you mean exactly by humidity? Also, Gary, what were your ratings for the beers?

QOTD1: Interesting question Mike. I guess I prefer wine more. That said, I do like beer and I like trying different beers, but whereas I have no problem paying $15 or $20 for a bottle of wine, I can?t bring myself to pay more than $5 for a bottle of beer unless it?s a special occasion or if I am at a beer bar, which is not very often. However, I think that after watching the show that may change!

QOTD2: I don?t really have a go to beer, but right now I like drinking a Pilsener by Asahi called ?The Master?.

Q4U: I know that this show focused on local breweries, so this is off topic somewhat, but what Japanese beers are available where you are? Have you ever tried Japanese beer and if so, what did you think?

  • if I can find it, which I can’t 🙁 living i Sweden but I’m visitibng Oregon next fall and then I might try some stuff. BTW Kona Brewing had excellent beers for my palate, Longboard, Lavaman, Black Sand Porter, got to go back to Hawaii some day.

QOTD1: I drank my share of beer in college, now it is too hard on my stomach. Beer is too filling, gives me heartburn, and quite often the heartier beers make me flush.
With that said QOTD2: Hitachino White is my beer for the summer.

  • Allan

    Genius show G!!!!!!!
    Great Guest!!!!
    The Beer Shows always rock!!!

I bow down. Let’s face it, Beer Rules!!!

Qotd: More wine than beer, but that will change. I really like IPA from Sierra Navada.

(The funky-funky song you mentioned might be US3: “Cantaloop Flip Fantasia”, i think it’s from 1993 or something)

    Cheers!

Now bring on the BIG #900!!!!!!

This calls for a celebration…. Amazing job GV

QOTD: My go to beers are Guiness, Waterloo Dark and Labatt Blue, but I love the beers from Unibroue especially Maudite (which I am currently drinking) and La Fin Du Monde!

I love the ?HA!? from Mott regarding the absence of clean glasses.

  • Oakmon’s BF

With all those bottles on the table and time running out, I had visions of the much anticipated 900 being a beer part two.

I think we need to get over this guest show tally thing. Gary is a spontaneous guy. We like that. He will say things spontaneously like ?I?ll only do 6 more guest shows this year.? And he will do spontaneous things like invite a guess on for a beer show or Armagnac show or tequila show or whatever. Shows without guests are good. Shows with guests are good. We need to be deliberately forgetful and not be so anal in trying to hold Gary to spontaneous statements. I trust Gary to use his judgment in deciding what shows to do, and I don?t want that to be constrained by any commitments.

Go to Beer: New Belgium Ranger IPA

Dumps the Browns & Indians and wear a Longhorns shirt: is it hard to get to Jersey on a bandwagon? Good show guys.

  • Oakmon’s BF

Palates vary and change and there is no right and wrong. Perspectives also vary and change. My current perspective is that I enjoy sipping wine and quaffing beer. I wouldn?t want to ?educate? my beer palate to the point where I?ve sacrificed the joy of quaffing. Someday when I?m retired and life has slowed down, I may start down the beer sipping road. I don?t go the other (light beer) extreme either. Because I drink beer so infrequently I don?t get bored with my old standby quaffers: Yuengling Traditional Lager, Fosters, Harp and for variety St. Pauli Girl. There are several Canadians that I?m fond of. Speaking of Canadians, watching you two drinking beer and having a good time with the episode haphazardly going in various directions, it made me think of the McKenzie brothers.

  • Believe it or not, I haven’t had the Ranger yet. It’s on my wish list. Tough to get in Mass!

I grew up in Cleveland and the attitude of the town and I never really gelled. I just can’t get behind the “oh well, at least we got there” attitude when I lose. I hate losing when I should win. If I lose when I should have lost, I take the lessons and build on them. The way the city handled “The Drive” and “The Fumble” never sat well with me. Cleveland never seems to be able to finish the job, but at the end of the day, the fans still appreciate the effort. Boston is not like that at all. The pace is quicker. The attitude is about winning. The biggest similarity is that the fans are both really religious about their sports teams, although Cleveland (due to economic reasons mostly) has given up on the Indians.

I get the “bandwagon” thing all the time, but remember: the Red Sox were cursed when I joined Red Sox Nation and the Patriots had Pete Carroll at the helm. I was never a Cavaliers fan. My dad and I watched the Celtics when I was a kid. Since Cleveland had no hockey team and since my old man and I were big fans of the sport, we watched any hockey we could find and paid particular attention to the Great One. I followed the sport religiously in the newspaper. Today, I’m a Bruins fan. In fact, one of my criteria for moving was that the city must be an NHL city.

I dumped Cleveland in 1997. The Longhorns shirt was part of a joke after SXSW 2010. I’m a huge fan of the city of Austin and aside from “Keep Austin Weird”, I feel like the Longhorn symbolizes the city. Austin is a city that I love like a second home. Many of my friends went to the University of Texas and UT and my alma mater, Miami University never compete in anything. My school is a hockey school.

My friend @saraschneider asked if I was ever coming home from Austin so I whipped out a cowboy hat and bought a Longhorns shirt and threw here a “hookem” to answer her question. I used that as my Facebook and Twitter avatar for about 5 months and people liked it so I stuck with it.

Now to your question: It’s hard to get to Jersey… period.

  • Greetings to Tokyo! Thanks for watching. Arigato!

  • Attaboy Richie. Give em Hell.

  • Thanks Oakmon’s. I can tell you that I am not on episode 900, but that’s awesome that you thought that.

  • Thank you so much for the props Allan. You’re right about the song! Great song.

  • Andre,

Normally when I throw my nose into a beer glass, I’m used to feeling a bit of the air that the beer gives off hit my nostrils. In this case, the nose was heavy and reminded me of 100% humidity in Florida on an already 90 degree day. Those days are terrible and that sensation is what hit my nose when I threw it into the glass. That gave was to to other scents. It was awesome. I love that beer.

Hit me up on twitter @belchingmonkey. If you let me know what you like in a beer and where you are located, I can help you find a beer that will be worth the $5-$10.

As for Japanese beer, I have had more than my share of Kirin with @GrahamNelson. I prefer Hitachino’s beers are they remind me of a Japanese game show. They are over the top with their flavors and I like that.

  • Thanks for giving it a shot.

  • #whyaustin

    Thanks brother

  • Marianne, that is one of my absolute favorites. Anderson Valley is blowing my mind with what they are doing.

  • Josh, thanks for giving it a shot! I bet you’d find the White Birch Indomitus interesting. It’s not your average beer.

  • Karl with a K, I cannot wait to get back to Portland, OR. The beer scene there is legendary. How can I get your beers to try on my show?

    Finally an episode on beer!!!

    Hooray BEER!

  • camira

how can you hate the ravens gary, when you have half of our team? september 13. its on.

  • Am I the only person schneidermike hasn’t answered? I am not surprised. Long Island beer (Long Ireland, Blue Point, Southampton, Great South Bay….) kicks Mass. beer ASS…

    ;P

  • pretty fun episode. i knew gary would dig the Indomitus.

speaking to the oaked aged thing going on in craft brews, i for one can’t stand it. most every one i have had is extremely to woody. back in the day when breweries would place there brew in the wood kegs, those kegs were being filled right after fermentation and usually staying local with the high likelihood of tapping immediately for the speakeasies or local pubs. so the idea they were aged in those barrels seems to be rather false when i hear craft beer folks use that argument nowadays for the emergence of the “oak aged thing”.

some of the best aged product in the craft beer world i have had are the Rasputin whiskey barrel aged. i cant complain about those, although they don’t really taste like beer anymore.

QOTD: nothing keeps me from expanding it, i am constantly at the brew shop have new beers, and attending tastings there. homebrew and craftbrew tastings.

QOTD: a good IPA used to be a go to, but i cant drink them anymore, instant heart burn. right now i have a brown ale and an indian brown ale i brewed, and that’s what we are drinking pretty much regularly. for the summer i keep on hand North Coast’s Scrimshaw, hands down the best domestic pilsner there is.

fun show. thanks for doing it.

  • Go To Beer: Independence Bootlegger Brown (when I’m home in Austin) or Dogfish 90

  • Sleak

QOTD: Mojo is my go to right now. When I can find it, I treat myself to their Double-IPA, Mojo Rising. The Double-Wide and Saison from the Smokestack Series of Boulevard Brewing are nice treats when I have out of towners from outside the Midwest visiting: both are great for summertime drinking, the DW especially with spicier BBQ.

QOTD2: Nothing: I started expanding my palate around age 22 when i would stop for a beer on the way home from work at my first “real” 9-5 job. I’d meet my dad at the Dundee Dell and we’d each have a 1554, which I also still enjoy from time to time.
