Not a big fan of the short format. I imagine this is what other wine video blogs might be like. Cut down to purely an info show, GV’s personality has no chance to shine, and lets face it, that’s why we watch.

  • QOTD: I’ve actually got a bottle of the 2007 sitting in the cellar. I might have to open it this week and then “this” will be my favorite Malbec. Have a great holiday weekend!

  • Slushpuppy1420

Please keep the Kermit Lynch selections coming. Are you going to attend the “Provence in Berkeley”, Saturday, Sep 18?
    Smell it first. TR

  • Nice, tight program.

    QOTD: Achaval

    QOTD: Achaval Ferrer.
I’ve got two 2007 Clos Coutale in my cellar. I’ve been thinking of opening one, but haven’t been around before supper long enough lately to decant it. I’m guessing a couple of hours would be good for this wine. Squirrel meat??!! Happy Labour Day.

  • Marc

Really appreciate the 1-bottle short shows GV. The longer ones tend to be hard to find time to watch lately. Also like the presentation of another varietal.

  • Marc-ChinaWineTours

QOTD: Oh, forgot this….no favorite, I just like Malbecs!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Well the Malbec-hype hasn’t really come to germany so I’ve never had one before.

  • Enjoyed the background history on Cahors. I’ve never really read much on it.
P.S. Have you really eaten squirrel?

  • Would have preferred 3-4 Cahors in a 20 min show.
Have a great long weekend, Gary!

  • WpgGord

Wow, I can get that up here in Canada for $15. I recall liking the 2005. Will try the 2008 soon. Thanks.

QOTD: I O.D.’d on Malbec several years ago. Haven’t had any in ages.

That guy totally scares me. But I want to be his friend. And pal.

I know . We (at least our regional supplier) was past the 07 inventory by the time that issue came out. Yet, the people will respond in droves, to such numbers and lists, even when the taste is before their tongue. Some sheepish, some tongue-dead, some not yet informed/experienced, and some w/ preferences which range the gamut. A miss like this can’t take away my admiration of Catena, but is just an inconsistencey. Their overall output’s quality contribution overrides a fail, until they consistently slack, and fail.

Cool episode Gary- I’m definitely enjoying the short, informative episodes. I can obviously find this region on google, but if you give us more geographical perspective like you did in the Savennieres episode, that would be sweet.

  • NeilMc

I just couldn’t get into a 2 part beer episode – skipped it. I like the tight informative shows too but I like it when you ad lib more and let it rip. Good show though.

QOTD: When Merlot was all the rage, skipped it, when Pinot was all the rage, I skipped it. Malbec is the new “Merlot” and I’m not compelled to try any. 5-6 years ago I do remember having a Graffigna Malbec that was pretty decent for the price point. Serviceable would be the word.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend Vayniacs!

  • NeilMc

Sir Gary is a dark, troubled soul. Have pity on him!

Favorite Malbec is Le Cedre from Chateau du Cedre in Cahors. I never really got into Malbec until I started drinking Cahors wines. You should taste a few more.

  • Anonymous

    Yes!

qotd;I know what I don’t like and that is a Ruta 22 I just had a wine tasting that tasted like fake candy mixed with bitter awful .

  • Randall

As you know, I have that exact same problem. I had a Temp/Malbec blend I really liked about 1 or 2 years ago. It might even have been the same vino…

  • Randall

    …Only if you get caught…

    😉

  • epidural

Great show…the wine store manager near my house turned me onto this wine 2 years ago and I have been buying it since. I to like old style wines from time to time, by the way it goes great with real shepards pie.

  • QOTD: favorite Malbec, Salentein 2007 (Arg.) … it’s quite crisp.

  • Randall

Like I said before, I always appreciate what you do on TSS, no matter if it’s long or short. That said, I think I do like the 3 wine eps a WEE bit more. *shoulder bump*

Plus, the 3 wine format can also come in the convenient “brown bag” wrapper…
    ;P

This wine has probably been in about half of my comments but it’s De Martino, 2006, Single Vineyard Maule Valley Malbec. New world fruit but not too much residual sugar, well integrated alcohol and tannins. It’s kind of shut down at the moment, waiting for tannins to subside!

  • QOTD: Maipe – like $8.99, and awesome. Drinking La Vuelta right now…super cheap and not half bad!

I like this format, but would like it better if you always linked it up to an older full length episode that covered a similar style of wine. that way if I want more, I can stick with a certain topic.

  • Alexandre-CF

Hey Gary, this format really is great!
i like the cahors style, really great malbecs with this magic oldworld touch.

QOTD: Gran Vin Goulart Malbec 2007. a really great Argentinean Malbec.

  • Anonymous

    Very possible.

  • Hey, I had that wine (2007, though)! I drank almost the whole thing because nobody else wanted any because they are chumps. You can find it anywhere.

QOTD: I also had that ‘The Show’ Argentinian Malbec, but I liked the one you reviewed more. The Show had too much oak, more than any other wine I’ve bought (23 now, all old world).

  • Peter Parker

Recently did a blind tasting of Malbecs (from anywhere in the world, under $30, to accommodate inflated Canadian prices). Of course most of them were Argentinian – young, fruity, one-note, and unbalanced. Then there was one that stood out – intriguing, complex, and balanced. Licorice, black tea, Chinese five spice, and definitely some chalk. Good acidity with nice fine tannins, well polished. Hands down, my favourite wine of the night. I think you get where I’m going with this…

QOTD: 2002 Domaine Marcilhac Cahors (which goes to show that these wines can be age worthy!)

  • Jasonbcarey

Yes, but why did you have to chose the most international Merlot laden Cahors, instead of a real old schoool one?

  • markie

new world malbec:durigutti, old world cedre heritage from cahors…must check out!!! huber-nice and great values!!!

  • Lilleysfour

Walla Walla Vintners is probably my favorite new world Malbec… the 06 and 07 are both really nice!

  • Nilo Lemos

Angelica Zapata is my favorite Malbec.

  • Nilo Lemos

Viu 1 2001 from Viu Manent is the greatest Malbec I’ve tasted!

  • Nilo Lemos

Alto Las Hormigas the best cost-benefit Malbec I’ve tasted!

  • norcalking

QOTD; Berryessa Gap. They also have a nice Tempranillo. Pleasantly surprised.

  • norcalking

Sir Gary is mentioned in, “The Billionaire’s Vinegar.” One of the major players in fact.
Check it out it the opportunity presents itself.

  • Wine Walker

Let’s try a 100% tannat wine. I could not find one from SW France, but I did find out that tannat is the signautre wine of Uraguay. Big tannic wine with lots of black cherry and some pepper. Texas planted around 200 acres of tannat grapes last Spring. Let’s see what takes off in Texas which is becoming known for its Mediterrean wines!

  • Benedict Hudson

I think you could get more than 1 wine in under ten minutes. I like this better. Might watch more often now…

  • Anonymous

Nice- I have the ’07 vintage of this wine in my cellar, looking forward to trying it now.
I still like the info but would prefer having >1 wine to compare to each other, notice the similarities/differences, etc. Also just curious what ever happened to having a different message on the chalk board each day? It’s been getting boring to look at recently.
QOTD: Haven’t had any malbec over the summer months, so I really can’t say.

  • Anonymous

Have to go with The Show Malbec just so I can give the Three Thieves guys a nice shout out. Another good show GV.

  • Anonymous

So weird that you did a Cahors show! I’ve been doing a lot of research on that region and been looking for a good one to try lately.

QOTD: I haven’t drunk a lot of malbec recently but I had the Crios malbec from Argentina that was a pleasant surprise about 2 months ago. Nice QPR play.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Great show! I kind of dig the “tight” shows filled with a lot of info. I’ll seek out a Chors this weekend.

    QOTD: Anything from Catnea (Alta)

  • Oh, btw, I’m hoping they’re not ALL going to be this short, I dig the long epis, but if you pepper in the shorts, those get watched early, the others late. Just my 2¢.

  • Allan

Nerdy nerd show, great. I like-it-a-lot.

But…. please keep on mixing things up G. Don’t stick with one format. That’s what i like about this show, unpredictability. And the Mottster.

Qotd: 2004 Achaval Ferrer Quimera Malbac from Argentina, which was what you could call, a nice drop.

  • Jonathan

Too short! Like the longer episodes. Feels too much like a one night stand. Wham. Bam. Thank you ma’am. Bring back the longer episodes!!!

  • Anonymous

    Good show Gary

  • CJ

Nice Show ! Good idea with the 5 minutes – just a bit too much of the “show” i.e. “Hello My Friends…..”, “Question of the day….” to make it more than a 3 minute info show …. Maybe you should extend it to up to max. 8 minutes … None the less – great idea – …. Yep, Cahors one of my favourite wines – best to be drunk with food – “meat” to be more precise. This will also help to appreciate the “old” style with a french “goute sauvage” – maybe I should say a “brettanomyces” tone ( that would be a topic for a show ) ! Don´t want to be too much of a nerd … just one last thought : How much are 30mio btls. of Cahors compared to apprx. 600mio btls. of Bordeaux ? ;-))) QotD: Try Château LaCapelle Cabanac …. if you can get hold of one …. rather modern Style !!! Cheers

  • his last apperance was promised to be the last

  • Anchorwines

But, I would be willing to try this wine again, it is from Kermit Lynch, and the price is pretty right on. Would probably prefer a bottle with a few years age on it anyway. Thanks Gary!

I’d been familiar w/ Pisoni Family in boht Ohio , and now Fla. respectable efforts, priced appropriately. I was most impressed, several years ago, w/ the firm structure, and recently had one that shows their direction to be that of easy, accessible… still not goopified, thankfully, but not rusticly course as a small French farm wine.
