85/100

Not a big fan of the short format. I imagine this is what other wine video blogs might be like. Cut down to purely an info show, GV’s personality has no chance to shine, and lets face it, that’s why we watch.

I was very impressed w/ the 50/50 Temp Malbec blend of Finca Copete. The label was rather arbitrarily laid out as to be pretty undistinguishable, but as a D/I product, they put alot of wine in the bottle for the $10 range. Very few wines I’m even interested in at this ‘value’ price point.

I like it when you have two wines so you have something to compare each one to.

I can’t think of a good Malbec right now.

Not drinking Malbec all that often. However, in the past Luigi Bosca’s Gala 1 has been enjoyable for the price and has potential to age well…

  • Hi! Quimera its a blend with cab sauv, cab franc, merlot and malbec! nice!

Way to nerd it up, GV! Like it.

QOTD: Catena Malbec (Argentina) is a safe fave of mine. This episode reminds us all that Malbec is really a French thang.

Crios is one of my favorite values as well – they do a good cab also.

Good show- I just picked up the Cahors ($16 here) on your recommendation. We have liked almost all of the malbecs we’ve tried over the years. A couple I remember are Navarre and Gascon, that are reasonably priced wines.

Maybe we are conditioned by TV shows. Nothing only goes 8 minutes unless it’s a mini-series opening. 99% go for 12 minutes I think. (everyone can weigh in) so maybe that’s the minimum show length? no? And like most TV shows, there isn’t one actor (wine) there are at least 2. Love you nerding it up, keep ’em coming.
Alamos Malbec 2007 and 2008. available everywhere (BJs, Walmart, etc.) 90 pts by someone.

Is anyone having trouble playing this on your ipod? I have been watching WLTV for about 1.5 years now & all of a sudden the past 7 episodes won’t sync w/ my ipod. Did something change format-wise?

  • Look, I understand. You’re super busy and things have to be cut. I don’t like this format. You are so focused on getting it done in a short time that your fun and random personality has no place here. YOU are the reason that I watch the show. WINE is definitely part (a big part) of my desire as well but I tune into THIS show becasue YOU host it. If I want wine info, i’ll read a book. This feels way too focused and a little boring.

Also, I really don’t like the solo bottle. I like seeing you get excited about the competition of the wines on the show. “This one sucks, this one’s great!”

I just miss you and don’t feel like this format gives me anything but the Gary that would sit in a room by himself and decide what wines he wants to put on the shelf.

Just trying to help. You asked for feedback. This is mine.

I hope you find a format that you feel good with.

I come for your fantastic wine descriptions and personality.. this one had a bit too much facts and background for me. Little dry. Could be the new format? Or just this episode?

Insipid wine from Sophenia in spite of their pretty packaging.
I suggest Luca Malbec as the best Malbec in at moderately expensive price. $28-30 / bottle.

Someone mentioned Texas. Neal Mewsom, one of the best known growers in Texas planted Malbec for Sunset Winery a number of years ago, and now tells people that the variety is one of his favorites. The first vintage Malbec from Newsom Vineyard [2004] got a mixed review with comments about the Oak Monster. The 2005 is very different — especially because it was aged in French Oak, rather than American Oak. I have a glass in hand.

Sadly, I’ve been in a malbec funk this last year. I’ve been diving into sparkling wines recently and the only malbecs I’ve had this season are the dime a dozen from Argentina. I wanted to let you know the new format isn’t bad, but does it have to be one OR the other? If you do 3 episodes a weeks why not 2 short tight shows while we can all have something to look forward to possible for the weekend.

I also made this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDrx_gjNuJA
for WLTV to ask a question in a more creative manner. Hope all is well, and the little one is doing great.
