line of the day – ‘This is not wimp city’

Love it when GV either raves about or hates a wine, and here he absolutely goes nuts over one of them. Very watchable

Gotta love the uniqueness of the Northern Rhone and the personal sense of place that the Cote Rotie appelation provides in the glass. Dynamite showing for the 2nd and 3rd wines.

QOTD: I DID go Old School and watched something from the past: “Inglorious Basterds.”

P.S. I LOVED the Freudian slip that happened when the G-man said “Oh, and you could’ve went OLD WORLD and rented it.” I think you meant ‘Old School,’ but I think I may replace ‘Old School’ with ‘Old World’ from now on just for the wine reference. Cheers!

  • Rhetro

hey gary – good show. i would love to see you tell us in every episode you can about the aging or cellaring. that would be great some info to have. like if you could tell us if its good to drink now or if it could use 2-3 or 20 years. you know when do you think it wil mature or peak.

qotd- shutter island was a huge disapointment. not really original and kinda cheesy. scorsese messed up. the acting was there and you can tell the director was good but like i said it wasnt very original and wasnt scary at all. suspense was pretty weak aswell. i loved law abiding citizen. great movie.

F U Gary! As much as I love Cote Rotie it’s just so painful to watch these episodes since atleast one of the wines always rocks and at the same time they cost way too much for my wallet 🙁

Just kidding, please do more of these northern Rhone syrah episodes. Maybe one on the more affordable wines of Cornas, St Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage? Or maybe even some lesser known Vin de Pays Syrahs from the Rhone.

QOTD: Only saw Inception and Predators. Don’t wanna say Inception but then again…Inception

  • QOTD: Too much good outside stuff going on to see many summer movies.
Did see Inception. Not a fan but worth seeing once.
Ditto Avatar; you guys should see it and decide for yourselves. Have a double date
DVD night with your spouses and great wine.
Going to see The Social Network Wednesday night.
Best DVD I got was a landslide: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog

  • Nice episode. Loved to try the Villard. Have some special occassions coming up next year and maybe with my new job I should be able to afford this ;).

    QOTD: La Meglio Gioventu

ps. Gary, plz some more nerdy stuff about the region, terroir, climate etc :P!

  • Will do some more nerdy stuff, sorry 🙁

  • OLD WORLD 🙂

  • Yeah should have made more mention on the ’04 vintage, I apologize, my slip up!

  • Thnx Oscar!

  • Kyle Wilson #20 🙂

  • Not sure on the T 🙂

Nice… you know how I like Big wines. I can’t wait to try that last one. And the second one. I’ll have to buy one of those to put away for my 65th. You coming to my 50th ?? I hope so since I know you like to forget my birthday…. 🙁

Put in down on your calander… I phone….outlook….whatever. Tell Mott he’ll remind you. Sept 16th…. 50 Homey. 50!!!!

Can you suggest something to drink on that day??

Love, Love, Love me some Cote Rotie… A little out of my price point for anything but a special occasion. But if I’m going to drop a hundy, I go here before I go Napa Cab.

QOTD: Inception. Genius work by DiCaprio. He’s got that “flawed hero” character absolutely nailed. Plus, a great story and awesome special effects. One of my top 5 all-time.

  • No arm band?!

QOTD: Inception was flat out awesome. Crazy good story, spectacular style, and a whole lot of depth.

  • Globex

that Brocarde sounds like a match for my palate… my favorite wines are the ones that can go perfect with a ribeye steak, but is also smooth enough to enjoy with some cheese & olives if I’m not that hungry, or simply a bit of dark chocolate.

QOTD: I typically watch a movie on average 3 to 4 evenings a week (depending on travel schedule). While out of the country I saw Salt, Letters to Juliet, Invictus, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and Green Zone. Each of which I found something to enjoy, but none come close to my weekend of The Godfather trio on blu-ray.

QOTD…I have a copy of “Bottle Shock” at home and intend to break open an 07 Montelena Chard. I hope this new world stuff good!!!!! Good call by Tooch on this one….Yea cant beat old world wines eh? Give me Syrah to Shiraz anyday

  • DaveAll

    good show.

qotd: clash of the titans, no, wait, Summer Slam 2010, no, wait, Alice in Wonderland, no wait… Date night, no wait….

Not a big fan of the Syrah, but may have to go back and re-visit since my palate has changed quite a bit over the last few years. Very good show Gary. Always love to see you get excited and the “Villard Brocarde” really brought that out. I’m sure it dosen’t hurt the Wine Library’s cash register either when your that excited about a wine. Great job!

QOTD: I be love’n the “Old School” nothing better than a “Singing in the Rain”, “Roman Holiday” or a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. MMMM, Audrey Hepburn, Beautiful!

Salt was a fantastic movie rental. I wish I saw this at the theater!!

In regards to the Amavi Cabernet Sauvignon, Marquis Wine Cellars in Vancouver, B.C will be ordering the wine next week!

I heard that a sequel is being written for The Expendables!!!

  • Wow. Two over 90 point scores. I had read of Villard, though I have not had the pleasure of tasting any of their Cote Rotie yet. Definitely will have to invest in a bottle down the road. The caveman comment was priceless.

QOTD: Didn’t see much this summer…Iron Man 2 and Despicable Me. Greatest movie I did not see…going to go with Inception. It sounds like something up my alley, though I will also be seeing The Social Network this weekend.

  • Gduffin

Love the show and Cote Rotie. Its one of the few places that conferment Syrah and Viognier, very old school, they have been doing it for more than 1000 years, to make big earthy wines you can expect from the Syrah but with a floral nose and complexity that the Viognier adds. Its a wonderful and unusual combination.

nice episode. So Tooch gets a Cote Rotie episode while my ongoing, long time request for a Madeira episode (with a vintage Madeira) goes unfulfilled?

    qotd: Mary and Max

Whatta a show Gary! If I can come up with some extra cash, I’m gonna put a couple bottles of the Villard away in my cabinet. QOTD: Predators

  • QOTD: “Inception” followed by “Withnail & I”.

    Great episode.

Now to batten down the hatches for the upcoming guest episodes.

  • scottEJ

Nice show, G. I’ve not too much experience w/Cote Rotie as they are generally out of my price range for the hit-and-miss I have experienced w/them. I feel I get a better bang for the buck w/Northern Rhone white wines. Great content.

QOTD: Nothing comes to mind. I’m more of a cold season movie goer than a warm season.

  • Just was at the Camden International Film Festival and saw Marwencol. Beautiful filmmaking intriguing story. Worth finding.

  • Allan

    Great show, THUNDER!

The best Cote Rotie i’ve had was the 1999 Chateau D’Ampuis from Guigal. Amazing stuff.!!! 😛

Qotd: “Once Upon A Time In The West”. Bought the DVD. One of the greatest movies of all time. Memorable from the get-go. Henry Fonda is just great in it. The ultimate bad-guy!!

Ohh, by the way, looking forward to the guest shows. BRING THE THUNDER!!!
Hoping for Oz Clarke one of these days……. 😛

  • Allan

    Inception was great.

Looking forward to the guest shows are we???? 😛

  • Allan

    GIIIIIIIVVVVVVEEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEE SOOOOOOOOMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEE THHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR!!!!

  • Good show.

    QOTD: Mesrine

  • great show, and fun to see GV set back by the sheer awesomeness of the juice.
QOTD:amazingly enough it was so busy I have not watched anything that I can remember, lame I know…except I did watch a documentary with my grandfather, about John Wayne and the making of the Alamo…and we both found that pretty interesting. The Duke left his studio because they would not let him make the movie…

  • Zino

Loved it when you said the mid palette lasts so long that it doesn’t let go. I really like those spontaneous reactions – that’s when you surpass other wine commentators.
QOTD: The Damned United – a film about the late Brian Clough, an Enlish soccer manager.

  • hmm Gary listen to Allan?
US didn’t lose the Ryder Cup. Europe won 😀
Gary, you don’t stand by ypur word, jerk! 😉 (wonder if Lizzie would let G drag her by the hair)
    96 p! Darn
QOTD: This summer? movie? I’m too old to rember or even see movies but The Lord of the rings triologi always works

  • badabingmike

Harry Brown starring Michael Caine. Violent but awesome.

  • Zino, thank u so much!

  • the wine was awesome!

Q: what is the difference between syphilis and syrah?A: you can get rid of syphilis

  • Great show!
Q: Inception. Best movie I’ve seen in years.

Q for you: What do you think of LT this season? Will he be a big part of the 15-0?

Beer wars was really good. It’s free on the interweb but you can donate.

  • Dusanmal

QOTD: Pandorum … One of the best Sci-Fi movies of all times. Seriously.

After all the rave, why 96+… Why not just 97…

  • NY Pete

btw , 15-1, curb your enthusiasm 🙂 … hope you didn’t put the whammy on OUR team … now where’s some new thunder?

  • Anonymous

Inception. Great movie. Also one of only two movies I saw LOL. The other was The Town also very good.

  • Anonymous

Guess I am going to have to go on to other things since there is “NO NEW THUNDER!” WHA HAPPENED??????

  • Anonymous

Wow…if you haven’t emptied that bottle yet, I’ll be right there!
QOTD: Lust|Caution (Chinese with subtitles…delicious scenes)

  • BaminBlack

C’mon Mott, get down on ‘The Social Network’. We’ve gotta see Hollywood’s version of Facebook. Gary, thanks for being humble and only pullin’ out the 20’s 😉

  • Please G-Man, it’s BUFFALO. How many games will they win? And if you predict you will never erase the greenboard, then one assumes you are choosing the Jets over the Vikes, not “leaning.”

Glad to see a Vayniac from the DC area got your ear but for 100 bones it better be fantastic and come with a blonde to pour it. 🙂

QOTD: I did not see anything of relevance. Bad movies this year so far.

P.S. Love ya Mott but no way they’re beating the Texans in Houston.
