Good to be introduced to a new region but episode a bit short to get too pumped about.

Became aquainted years ago, but have long held a great preferance for wines from Minervois, esp. Chateau de Gorgazaud, which was one of the gateway wines for me, as a waiter, in the 80’s. St. Chinians appear to me, to be middle weight, but light, very fresh and fragrant, and pretty close to gulpable. Versatile, tasty, good value.
Yesterday, was at a 30 Wine Throwdown w/ lots of big names like Billecart-Salmon, Silver Oak (Napa), Liparita, Forman, Zind-Humbrecht. Abe Schroeder was there, pouring The Scholuim Project wines:
’04 Tenbrink Vineyards Babylon (Petite Sirah)
’08 Bokisch Ranches Marcher sur la Lune Reserve (Verdelho)
’08 Farina Ranch The Prince in his Caves (skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, gone wild)
’08 Gardens of Babylon (Babylon -based P.S. blend from multi- sources)
    ’07 Hudson Vineyards Androkteinos (Syrah)
    ’07 Androkteinos (Syrah)
Mr. Schoeder was, of course, very affable, pleasant, and thorough in explaining to each person who visited his table, and the explainations were a passioned, and interesting as the wines were huge performers. So it was ,pretty much ,a four star nerd wine affair, w/ one of the leaders in pushing the envelope in American wine, today.

QOTD: I’ve heard nothing of St. Chinian but I will investigate because I liked the characteristics of todays wines. In terms of nerdy wines I’ve had, I haven’t had much but I had this red two weekends ago that I can’t remember the name that screamed pickles!…maybe it was a Rioja but I feel like I would remember that…hmmm.

Good tight show. Glad to see my computer at home lets me post. I blame it on Disgust.

QOTD: I know nothing of this region you speak of, I will have to try and acquaint myself with it.

Nerdy QOTD: The boss busted out a few ports for our open house the other day. An 85, 89, 90 and 92. All “official” Portugese varietals, great stuff.

  • Anonymous

Seriously! Must have filmed a bunch that day.

  • I’ve never had Saint-Chinian wines.

QOTD: I know nothing about the region.
The nerdiest wine, hmm… tough one. Well, maybe not nerdiest but, I tried a white consecrating wine that I hadn’t had before from Domecq, quite lovely actually, sweet.

Disgust is SERIOUSLY acting up lately. So because of cellarrat5’s post about the Awesome port tasting at the winery the other day, I will post the following nerdy report…

    Ok, nerdy experiences lately?
m2 Winery in Lodi is making some fantastic wines. A friend and fellow beer (and wine) judge knows them (and has lent a hand on blending and bottling days), but I have no connection to them. These are some of the wines I loved and bought on our recent trip to Lodi to go to St. Amant?s open house (around the corner), where cellarrat5 works and makes, quite simply, some of the best QPR wines and especially non-Portuguese ports I?ve had in a while. Some of which I?ve reviewed here in the WLTV comment section, and buy as frequently as I can. Which is fairly often? from them and also from a national wine retailer. That day they broke out some Incredible 20- and 18-year-old ports. Wow? we were bowled over?
Concerning m2? First and foremost for my palate, the ?Singularity? tastes like a nice Bordeaux (and coming in at less than $30), and their Old Vine Zin is awesome. The two whites are no slouches, either, being very food friendly. Although I must say that St. Amant?s Verdelho beats this one, being slightly fuller, more complex and better balanced. The V2 is austere and acidic and will be great with oysters and other shellfish, etc. That?s exactly why I bought it. The ?Trio? was quite good and is next on my list to pick up. After all, I needed to have some cash for St. Amant?s wines and ports, as well? J
2007 ‘Singularity’ Cabernet Sauvignon (Frazier Vineyard, Napa)
2008 ‘Old Vine’ Zinfandel (Soucie Vineyard, Lodi)
2009 ‘V1’ Viognier (Fair Play, El Dorado)
    2009 ‘V2’ Verdelho (Amador)
2007 Trio Red Wine (Sierra Foothills)

Nice quick show and good info. Thanks GV for your help. Always enjoy new and exciting wines that you introduce us to. “More Thunder Please!”

    It’s so TOTALLY disgust!!!!!!!

Me, too… Hours and hours… we ought to get some kind of FREE wine or free shipping or something for all the hassle it takes us true followers to post on this site…

    Pay attention, LisaS…

QOTD: Heard of but not that familiar with St. Chinian. Will make an effort to try some. Most recent nerdy wine was Domaine Columbier Cuvee Gaby 2006 from Corbieres.

Like the Jets lunchbox in backround. 🙂

  • John__J

qotd: That would be a red Burgundy. Not pinot noir, not gamay, but Cesar. Had a Burgundy from the Bourgogne Cotes d’Auxerre AOC that was 100% cesar. I was pretty psyched, it was one of those wines I never really thought I’d see imported into the U.S.

Gotta find me some St Chinian. I had the privilege to try a 1960 Chateau de Pressac and a 1990 Lynch Bages. Very ethereal wines and nerdy I hope!

  • Randall

:D!! As a Niners fan, I must have subconsciously blocked out that lunchbox. Good show, though?

Don’t know alot about St Chinian but you have me sold. Just talking about the meat and game. of this wine I think it would be a def winner for my pal. I will have to find some. Thanks @ Nice show Gary.

If I remember correctly that was the winery that Eric Glomskie (sp?) owned and operated, who also helped Maynard Keenen start Caduceus and set up Arizona Stronghold vineyards. Apparently they make some good stuff.

Damn, your on a roll Dr.; no guests in a while, you must be loving life!

  • St. Chinian – it’s not Chinon. I think of Hecht and Bannier’s St. Chinian because of the QPR for the 07 vintage.

Geek wine: Syrah from Cowhorn vineyards, Applegate Valley, southern Oregon.

  • Anonymous

Wow, how much coffee did you have before the show!

All kidding aside, I have never heard of St. Chinian before, and I’m happy you brought it to our attention. Thank you.

QOTD: Nothing too nerdy, just Gazella Vinho Verde.

    Cheers!

    QOTD1 – I don’t know anything
QOTD2 – Nothing too nerdy lately, but I did pick up an Elio Perrone Clarte Moscato D’Asti 2009 at WL the other day that I really enjoyed. Great value at $14.98, over the top flowers (in a good way).

I told my attorney that it was NOT in his interest to take those last 23 doses after we took those first 19 hits and all those laughers, screamers, uppers and downers… but what does a fat Samoan know about “moderation”?…

p.s. The funny thing is that all you Vayniacs think I’m joking about my past…
