Good to be introduced to a new region but episode a bit short to get too pumped about.

So is a good brandy and gets the job done faster…or at least you care less about how long it takes (the exploring, I mean).

Many times (a great producer & very good wine), but Baumard’s true claim-to-fame is their profound Quarts de Chaume.

I tried a lirac last night, that was sort of unusual. I get a bit turned off by the pepper component in southern france wines, other than that I love them. I also tried a 2006 Jonata Todos the other day, and it may not be nerdy, but it was effing awesome. You should taste on of their wines on the show and get some in the store!

La Grange de Quatre Sous is actually made by a Lady Hildegard Horat.
The blend is 55% Syrah and 45% Malbec that’s why is a Vin de Pays and not a St.chinian AOC. She works with international grape varieties in Languedoc Roussillon, and she planted there some Petit Arvine as well (from switzerland). If you have any chance give her whites a go, is really worth it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Actually tasted 7 or 8. My Dad used to visit Russia a lot in the 90’s early 2000 th so he brought back all kinds of stuff, wine, chocolate, vodka, beer, marmelade etc etc.
Haven’t had a good Russian chocloate yet. They all taste burnt wood and are very bitter if you taste the dark ones. The milky ones tend to be very “over boilded” milk and sugar.
But that is experiences from 8-10 years ago. Maybe that changed. I will look for some to try. I think the whole industrial thing of late Soviet still lingers in Russian food manufacturing. Watch out for the vodka thou. It is often so smooth thats no wonder Russian men turn into drunks and die before the age of 55 ๐Ÿ™‚ The last Russian sparkling (they do make a lot) I tasted was really bad sweet stuff.

QOTD 1: I have been in tune with St. Chinian over the last 12 months, and have drank quite a few due to the value that they bring (mostly K&L selections out here on the West Coast). I did my fair share of reserch on the region, SO the better question to answer is:

QOTD 2: The most nerdy wine that I’ve had recently is on that I brought into the restaurant where I work and have been blowing through it bot by-the-glass and by-the-bottle. It is a Bobal-predominant blend from Utiel-Requena (in Spain near Valencia).
    2007 Bodegas Mustiguillo “Mestizaje” (70% Bobal, 10% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet, 10% Garnacha)

Good show. QOTD 1: I’m quite familiar with St. Chinian. 5 years ago I spent some 2-3 months doing my thesis in a winery in Berlou which is not too far away from the town of St Chinian and an village appellation under St Chinian. This guy Jean Marie Rimbert and one of his wines probably also answers QOTD 2 on my part: The nerdiest wine I’ve had lately is from Domaine Rimbert: “Carignator” 2008. Speaking of beef and stew, this would qualify as a beef monster vinified as it is on 100% Carignan.

  • QOTD: Nothing.
QOTD 2: It’s sad to say i haven’t had a nerdy wine lately … the closest would be last night; a Cousino Macul, finis terrae (blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah)…. hmmm, going to have to try something strange soon, ah i mean nerdy.

QODT: Nothing.. I don`t know if it`s a nerdy wine, but I`m drinking a Languedoc-Roussillon to day. A Cote du roussillon villages, from a well known french producer, M. Chapouitier. I haven`t tried a cote du roussillon before, soo I`m expanding my palate today ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had a 2008 Vouvray Demi-Sec Vigneau-Chevreau, Cuvee Clos De Vaux Friday night and I can actually say it brought goose bumps. I couldn’t believe the aromas; starwberries, peach, honey, butterscotch. My senses were going crazy. I couldn’t stop sniffing it, when I finally got around to drinking it, it didn’t disappoint. A lot of the same on the palate that was in the nose; honey, peach, nice acid and very fresh. I could have drank it all in one sitting, but I saved some for last night also. I have never had a wine do this before. Man, fantastic! GV thanks for enlightening me. Is that NERDY enough for you?

  • I know nothing about these wines.

I had my first Montsant the other night. Not my favorite wine but tasted better with food.

    Nebbiolo tonight…..

QOTD1: Nothing. I was aware of St. Chinian, but don’t believe I have ever tried one.
    QOTD2: 2006 Petrale Aglianico

  • Hide the bodies tonight…. *cough* I mean Cava tonight

  • Like unicorns farting rainbows. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Your actually listening to him? ;P

  • Even better back in the summer they stated that they were interested in maybe planting stuff for sparkling wines. Nice.

  • and sparklies? ๐Ÿ˜›

  • So stop yappin’, put another log on the fire and break out the Prosecco. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Awesome! But I wonder what the availability will be. My guess is it’s going to be small lot stuff. Either way I will have to try it.

  • QOTD – never heard of St. Chinian before, but sounds good.
QOTD2 – haven’t had anything nerdy in a little while, just moved the Bay Area and have been exploring some Sonoma and Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards and trying producers I have never experienced before. I guess it is relatively nerdy to just drive around wine regions with no plan and just randomly stop at places. Best way to spend a day…

QOTD: Never had a St. Chinien yet, although I would very much like to try should an opportunity arise.

QOTD2: Last night, I had a dornfelder from Mosel, and even nerdier, an Austrian roter veltliner. From what I know, there’s only several hundred acres of this variety planted in the whole wide world.

    Good episode.

QOTD – not a durn thing. And nerdiest wine – not really sure how to rate wines in that fashion.

Oh and tried to comment on episode 958 but had major issue with Disqus for that episode. No idea what the problem was but could not get to work.

2003 Couly-Dutheil Chinon Crescendo Clos de l’Echo – Tight the first few hours, but settling into a medium/full bodied mix of herbs, chocolate, stone fruit, plum, cranberry, olive. Great wine, changed a lot over the course of 4 days, the last bit being the best.

Thanks for the info on St. Chinian wines. I’m going to get caught up on a few episodes of WLTV while a blizzard dumps over a foot of snow on us today.

QOTD: Have not tried any of these wines before. Nerdy wine- is wine from the Ozarks of MO nerdy? We had some wines from the Stonehill Winery recently. Not bad.

QOTD: Nerdiest wine lately… Lard Des Choix, 2008, Syrah/Gamay blend, vin de pays from Ardeche (hence l’Ardechois=Lard Des Choix) from a northern rhone producers going as Les Champs Libres (Renรฉ-Jean Dard & Hervรฉ Souhaut), really great blend, ยฃ15 in the UK.

    Are you SF or LA?

  • Hey Gary

    Good, snappy show, thanks.

QOTD: I haven’t had much experience with St Chinian, which is strange as I love the wines from that part of the world. Most geeky wines I’ve had recently … awesome Chateau Laffitte-Teston 2006 from the Madiran and Aveleda Fonte vinho Verde; both good

    Cheers
    Andrew

This one is really good. It looks like a regular sized bar but it’s 10 individual little bars like kit kat almost. It has nuts and is pretty dark but not burnt but maybe a little woody. The only name I can find on it is Bgoxhobehue.
