EP 975 Beaune Wine Tasting

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes 3 different Beaune reds from Burgundy, on the suggestion of a Vayniac. This region is in the heart of Burgundy and makes great values for a region known for its expensive wines.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Dubois Chorey Les Beaune Clos MargotBeaune White or Red
1996 Maillard Savigny Les BeauneBeaune White or Red
2008 Chateau De Chorey Beaune Les TeuronsBeaune White or Red

Lines of the day, Mott, ‘That’s just Awful.’ GV, ‘That’s just like you and I became New Teenage Ninja Turtles, picked up the manhole, went down there and it was like sewer city.’

Hilarious episode full of different ways to describe stinkiness (including ‘a rhino just farted’)

Also notable for a rare swear word having to be bleeped out

Great stuff

Some good Pinot Noir coming out of New Zealand.
QOTD: top of Everest but without having to climb it.

  • I agree but your team is not doing too bad without them. How about the shutout yesterday?

  • Well done sir.

My first experience with real Burgundy was at a wedding where the groom’s parents came from France with several bottles of the real deal. Another guy & I looked at the table where the wine was and lit up. It was sublime.
QOTD: the lagoon at Bora Bora.

  • never too late for a “hey hey.” classic (vintage) ny pete.
i am typing like e.e. cummings.

I’ve noticed there have been a few words that’s slipped through the cracks before without getting bleeped. About 30 min and 19 sec in on episode 641 comes to mind….

  • QOTD: As most people would say, my list is long. However, one place I would love to go to would be a true farmer’s market in Italy. I don’t care where in Italy, but it has to be authentic. The kind of thing you don’t find online because the vendors don’t need to be online. They sell great food to people because they have to. It’s their way of life.

Gary, I just discovered WLTV and I am hooked! Mine is kind of more an “I wish I could of been there”, but I really wish I could have been at the final Nitro taping. R.I.P. WCW, we miss you!

  • Grill Factor

Definitely like the pace of the recent shows. Awesome seeing a Beaune ep. We need a Grappa show!

QOTD: My favorite place in the world…standing in the middle of the Pantheon in Rome…

I would like to go see the pyramids or go to Mecca during the Hajj, I am not Muslim but to see all that humanity circling around the Kaaba would be amazing. I don’t think you can go if you are not Muslim but maybe if I get a Muslim helicopter pilot?

  • I LOVED NITRO!

  • expand on pace? faster? Tighter?

Oh snap!! I like the way you just snuck in that you are thinking about taking the show on the road!!!!!! WI You MUST MUST MUST MUST come to WI and do the Baja Cali (I’m not nagging about Baja Cali I’m “hustling” it πŸ™‚ show from here. LOL

QOTD: The Parthenon. I studied Biblical Languages so Greek fascinates me. Plus, in a lot of ways it is the seat of Western culture.

    Is Minka there?

  • Wow, this show was loaded with some interesting tidbits. “No matter what they say” Hmmm and you may take the show on the road! Can I carry your bags? Please, please.

These are great wines and assumed they would show better than Oregon though everyone tries to emulate the King of Pinot, Burgundy.

I was surprised you did not mention the one thing I think of when someone says “Beaune” and that is their yearly auction for the hospices and for other charities. This is an interesting article where the Asians are outspending the Americans at these auctions. No surprise to me. http://blogs.wsj.com/wine/2010/11/22/a-record-sale-at-the-hospices-de-beaune-auction/

Also, keep giving us food pairings with the wines you taste. It is appreciated. Have you tried a spatchcock Cornish hen or turkey? Yum

QOTD: Centre Court at the Australian Open with Roger Federer playing Rafael Nadal. This is the last Grand Slam tournament I have yet to attend on my Bucket List. Sorry to see Raffa lose. πŸ™

    GO PACK!

    Cheers!

LOL — qotd — I’d really love to revisit Westminster Abbey or the Vatican again, but someplace I haven’t been? The Getty Museum

  • Also, I want to see the Wine Lib.

I’m gonna go with Prague Castle… walked through on tours before, but I want to rent that whole sucker out, have an NICE meal with wine followed by a sick party. Heckyes. And there are peacocks that rome the premises. They’re invited too. You too Gary!

I don’t know about 40-50 tries, but keep going back. In the 90s, I thought PN and Rieslings were ‘meh’ and dsiliked Cab Franc. I still find PN a bit hit or miss, but I have more Riesling than any other wine and enjoy Cab Franc a lot

Crazy that of all the baseball players that ever played the game, you throw out Mark Lempke. I played High School ball with him. Coincidence? I think not. Love the tight format of late. QOTD: DRC.

  • Neil McNamara

QOTD: Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysees / Paris France

Back to “guess what score GaryV is going to give this wine”:
    #1 I guessed 88 points – GaryV: 88 points
    #2 I guessed 92 points – GaryV: 90 points
    #3 I guessed 93 points – GaryV: 93 points

2/3 for today’s tasting – happens all the time.

  • Nahhhhh, you’re fine without them. Unleash the Fury!!!! πŸ™‚

  • That’s a good one.

  • A truly, truly amazing place. No place in the world like it.

  • Hmmm you should have at least spelled his name right. πŸ˜‰

Great show! Great pace, format, and focus.

QOTD: 586 Morris Avenue Springfield, NJ 07081 …or Machu Picchu.

  • That’s the plan anyway…

Celibrated NYE fireworks on the Charles Bridge w view on the Castle and a vintage roederer rosΓ©. Epic night

Great show!!! This, for me, is your sweet spot GV. Three wines to give depth of information and a compare/contrast factor and about 15 minutes for GREAT reactions. Where else you gonna get “sheep ass butt” – “rhyno fart” – and “sauerkraut on the initial attack” all in the same sentence?! Nowhere, that’s where!
QOTD: Someplace overlooking Ground Zero. Lot’s of activity there and it would be fun to see a show with the images of rebuilding in the background. Thanks, GV!

I know I just saw that it was his birthday. I almost felt bad.

    Yours,

Ugh, what a memory. I spent NYE in St. Wenceslas Square. It was bonkers. Absolutely gorgeous. Would have liked to have more finely tuned into wine then. That was 6 years ago and I was doing a half year abroad there… although I learned to love the Moravian varietals!

  • Im going to keep an eye on these wines and do some discovery.
QOTD= Thats a hard one, tons of places I would love to see, but picking one… “The” Colosseum

Finally a show about a Great wine. Love it.

Great show about a great wine.

  • NJ Big Chris

Rhino Farts? love it.. No need to bleep…

  • Grill Factor

    Hi mate,

I’d say tighter; 3-4 wines in 15 mins is a good effort. The notes are concise plus you’re still getting in shout-outs etc. Though I still appreciate shows with 1-2 wines in depth i.e. Teroldego, Falanghina, ‘Laid Back Fridays’…

  • Anonymous

I tried a couple wines with mixed results.. During NYE, everyone was getting wild on Bohemian Sekt which was -in my opinion- quite undrinkable to say the least..

  • Anonymous

Sekt was un-drinkable… but so so so cheap. I couldn’t do much of it at all. Moravian whites and reds were quite alright though… I liken them to Trader Joe’s Two Buck Chuck wines.

  • Anonymous

Did it! Taj Mahal. But I really want to see the aurora borealis in Sweeden or Alaska or Antarctica. But as far as wine is concerned the Mosel.

  • NJ Big Chris

QOTD – Out on a limb here. I’d like to watch an earth rise from the moon. Under the influence.

  • NJ Big Chris

QOTD – Any tropical beach with a drink right now too. St lucia? One more day of snow in NJ and I quit…

  • Anonymous

QOTD: The Great Pyramid–maybe someday. This is a classic show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep up the good work. Hope you get to upstate NY someday–namely, Albany.

Augusta National – Golf course in Augusta Georgia where the Masters is played!

  • NJ Big Chris

This reminds me of Goodfellas… Classy but edgy too…

  • DaveAll

love Beun. Boon. bone… oh, you said it best. love them. i could drop some serious while in France, too expensive here in US.
The first one was ONE barrel? ghez. wow. micro-winery! Good value? did I hear 1 barrel wrong, probably. never mind. Good show. SHOUT OUT!

Great show Gary, very educational. Burgundy is still the greatest mystery to me of the great wine places in the world.

QOTD-I would like to visit the tower at Ch. La Tour in Bordeaux. It’s on my “bucket list”.

  • I’m very interested in that stinky-stink. Barnyard funk is something that I love in beer (which is my background), and I need to explore the wines that bring the funk too.

QotD: if I didn’t already grow up in Kansas City, MO (barbecue capital of the world), then I’d say that I want to go on a barbecue pilgrimage to Oklahoma Joe’s, L.C.’s, Woodyard, Danny Edwards’, Arthur Bryant’s, Gates’, Jack Stack, Smokin’ Guns, etc.

My real answer, then, will be that I want to visit Belgium, specifically the Wallonian region. More specifically the little town of Soy, in Luxembourg province, Wallonia, Belgium. There I will visit Dany Prignon, brewer of the artisan farmhouse ale brewery, Fantome.

Buildings and venue type places don’t excite me much, I’d be more of a natural wonder sort of person. I’ve always wanted to go see Katmai National Park Alaska, though I’m not sure it would be #1 on my list. Ask me tomorrow and I might say the Sidney Opera House or some other place.

I like the 15 minute shows with 3 or more wines. I liked your specific food pairing ideas too. As always, I enjoy your ‘nerding it up’ and colorful descriptions of what you taste and smell. I also liked your input on decanting and/or how long to cellar these wines. I’d often like to know if a wine you are tasting should be decanted.

The other day you asked about trying to squeeze in episodes to hit the magic date for the thousandth show. More shows are great – I’d watch twice as much easy – however I’d hate for you to hit 1000 on some poetic date and then quit! Here is to another thousand!

Grappa show. Not a bad idea. Don’t like it, but would love to learn much more about it.
