  • Very nice show, tight and energetic. I bet the wines are good but I have a cold so right now I feel “ehhh.”

QOTD: South America = Hot Brazilian women

    Cheers!

  • QOTD: Home. I would also have to add beautiful women (specially in Colombia, Argentina and Brazil), joie de vivre, great football (the authentic version) players, and an unfortunate history of violence (sans Maria Bello in a cheerleader outfit…)

    QOTD: New World.

Gary: Was there a huge difference in concentration/length from the benmarco to the lota? You didn’t compare those two: close in score but not in price.

  • Hahaha. πŸ˜€ Thanks for the compliment.

I heard rumors of you coming to the “West Coast Vayniac Meet and Greet” (WCVMG) is this true??!

Juan Valdez and his burro, without a doubt. Getting a little deeper I probably think about the movie Motorcycle Diaries when Che discovers the people of South America.

Side note, was sad to see this kind of wine from Cousino, who used to be a source of more traditional wines with some truly bizarre perfumes coming from the glass.

QOTD: South America=Sanhattan (Santiago, Chile)…The Manhattan of South America. They have way too many Starbucks.

I’ve been enjoying the last couple Chilean CarmΓ©nΓ¨res I have imbibed of late. Talk about a value play.

Great show, even though the wines did not show too terribly well you did not let it affect your energy. You know that groove you were looking for; you may have found it. And as always, thanks a million for the shout out. Love the interaction with the Oak Monster and Count Chocula as well; keep those platitudes and metaphors flowing man!!

QOTD: Grass fed beef, Malbec and absurdly beautiful bombastic babes.

nice to see a south american show. I’ve been SUPER down on Argentinian wines lately. Hopefully these turn out alright.

Really look forward to meeting you, and all the others that will hopefully be there!

Many things but mostly Argentinean beef.
I’m on a quest myself to comment every past episode of WLTV and just watched the 50th earlier which was great but did not have the footage of Spain I was anticipating, so big deception.
LOVE the energy Gary, keep it up^.

    South America = Patagonia

Best trip I’ve ever taken. I’ve been on every continent sans Antarctica, and the combination of great culture, wonderful people, amazing landscapes, and ridiculous trout fishing makes me dream of returning.

QOTD: Majestic Trailblazers, the greatest South American wines leave something new behind without any conscious intent but like a true tango, not for spectatorship or circus tricks but just the product of polar opposites at play.

QOTD- South America: New World, new styles, carmenere, malbec, steak, seafood, Andes, beautiful places/people, new discoveries, unconventional

Gary-Glad to see you did a show on South America! After living in Chile for 3 years and developing my passion for wine in down there, it’s exciting to see that the wines are getting a lot of recognition on your show and hopefully you and other Vayniacs will seek out these wines as not only good values but great potential for wines and of course expand some palettes! Hope to see more in the future.

When I think of South American wine though, I tend to separate Argentinian and Chilean wines distinctly. In fact, I feel that they have very little in common.

To start with, I am generally not a fan of the flavor profiles of Malbec and Bonarda. Just not my cup of tea. So trying to wade through the overwhelming mess of fake tasting, oak chip added, juicy fruit-esque wines to find the few I may like is not worth my time.

On the other side of the border, however, I find quite a few chilean wines I like. I think the quality of the low end of their wines isn’t as good as it was 5 years ago, but I can generally grab a bottle from a big producer like Montes or Casa la Postolle (sp) without fear of hating it.

On the upside, I’ve had some VERY good wines from Chile. I think a good winemaker could do something great with their carmenere. Their merlots tend to be a great under the radar wine too as well as chardonnays.

Another great episode. I might try the Cousino Macul Antiguas Reserve Cab Sauv for $11 before I go to the big boy…

QOTD: South America = drugs. Sorry, but I just saw the Seinfeld episode with the sniffing accountant who kept going to South America…
JERRY: Who goes to South America?
ELAINE: People go to South America.
JERRY: Yeah, and they come back with things taped to they’re large intestine.

“Blackberries dipped in Dark Chocolate” MMMMMMM!

Solid show, really enjoyed the vibe also. I feel you are really back from the funk you were in and glad for it! I have been trying the Argentine wines and have been pleasently suprised with the effort they have been bringing and I have you to thank for that GV, so Thank You. All around “SOLID”. Love where you are going with the shows lately.

QOTD: S.A.= Catena, “The Girl from Ipanema”, and the Flooding of ball players into American Baseball.

    Good show.
QOTD: South America = …Patagonia. For many years I had thought of Patagonia as just a flat, dismal, cold, desert, all from descriptions I had read over the years. Then about a year or so ago I was messing around on Google Earth and started looking at Patagonia, checking out photos from there, etc. and I just fell in love with the place. It seems a lot like the American (I know, United States to all of the Latin American Vaniacs out there) west, or maybe like the west as it used to be. Fantasticaly beautiful and compelling. You asked the other day what INSTITUTION we would most like to visit, but if you changed that to what PLACE we would like to see, Patagonia would win, no contest.

qotd: Patagonian Pinot. I think pinot noir in Patagonia is gonna be getting the hype like pinot got in Central Otago recently

I love the Uruguayan wines too, I’ve been getting some real steals for the price. I brought in a Marselan (a cross of cabernet sauvignon & grenache) that was awesome for the price.
I’d had a marselan from Southern France before and was really disappointed. Definitely shows not to right off a varietal if you’ve only had it once. Who knows, that may be a possible flagship grape for Uruguay the way malbec, torrontes and bonarda have been for Argentina.
