  • that’s a secret

  • This Show is great keep up the good work Gary… And thanks for pushing people to try new wines… Would have started to do so otherwise.
QOTD1: My mom always made it with milk so thats the only way to do it… water just dosen’t cut it …
QOTD2: Would have to be the Cruz Alta Chairmans Blend 19 bones good wine really like it…

  • half milk half cream? now we are talking liquid ganache

Gary, you’re on a ROLL! I don’t think there’s any surprise at all at the great responses from lurkers and regulars, because you’ve been rocking it recently. Had the chance to pop a bottle of Taurasi last year, and I did indeed see a lot of potential. It’s definitely an area I will be trying out more often.

QOTD1: Milk – although it’s not always available in my house because I seldom drink it by itself.
QOTD2: I don’t usually keep multiple bottles of the same wine (not beyond 2-3), but if anything comes close to being a “house wine” in my book, it’s the Dr. Loosen “L” Riesling. Not many people around me are serious wine folks, so it has to be something even they seem to enjoy time in and time out. I’ve found it to be a safe choice for those occasions when I’m not trying to nerd it up with the wines, but just chilling. Consistent quality, too, and widely available enough that I don’t have to order from WL a week in advance if I’m in a hurry.

QOTD 1: DEFINITELY milk and 2% is the minimum. If you’re using skim, you may as well use water and where is the fun in that?

QOTD 2: Don’t think I have any one wine that I drink more than others. But I do have some favorite producers: http://www.philipperaimbault.fr/ and http://www.brescou.com/ come to mind for good value and high quality wines.

Yes, this is how I like it. A little info in the beginning about an area, grape, person what ever. LOVE IT.

    QOTH1: milk, always milk.

QOTH2: My house wine is a sparkling wine from Alsace from the house of Emile Beyer. I can’t buy it in Denmark (don’t know about the states), but I pick it up in Alsace myself. Inexpensive and very good. A good all arounder and a crowd pleaser as well. And by the way its made with 100% pinot noir. Ohh yes my friends, its fantastic.

    And in Denmark

the 2009 is not so bad either. 2008 not so good.

  • Anonymous

    SPARKLING. OHHH YES, MY FRIEND.

100% full cream milk with the occasional shot of Bailey’s
House wine is always on a rotation changes week to week

Can’t get Frogmore Creek in Denmark πŸ™

    Milk.
Because I eat a lot of BBQ, I guess 2009 Leon Millot from Keuka Lake Vineyard would be my house wine. I drink it more often than any other wine. You should try it if you ever get a chance.

On another show please explain “Aglianico del Vulture is an Italian red wine based on the Aglianico grape produced in the Vulture area of Basilicata.” Give us the nerdy education. Compare/contrast/explain. Thanks.

sideQOTD: milk is better, however when my husband was unemployed, we used water, sometimes we use 50-50

QOTD: no house wine…….we expand our palates and try new

  • Oakmon’s BF

I know he used to. On several old shows he mentioned that he reads new messages to old episodes. When I met him at a signing for his first book he recalled things that I (newly) posted to old episodes.

Hey Gary, another interesting, focused show. The 05 Radici Taurasi brings back memories from my family’s trip to Rome last year. That was the first wine I bought to drink in our apartment. It was only 30 US dollars and was damn good. I might have tried other Taurasis, but that’s when I discovered the 04 Brunellos. QOTD: 06 Suri Dolcetto from Zeto’s Wine Shop in Greensboro, NC.

  • Thanks Lisa! I wanted to be there so bad. πŸ™ I am glad Randall sent me a picture. πŸ™‚ But I can see why he didn’t send me anymore, He was too busy opening up your Zins ;P

Hopefully the words. “That freak…that perv or that pain in the arse” was not stated before my name. πŸ˜€

  • thats whats up…taurasi is one of my favorite all-time wines!! now just hit up some cesanese and piedirosso and you will have made every italian fanboy proud with all the incredible italian shows you have done in your nearly 1000 shows!

  • Side QOTD: If I’m really doing it up right, then I want milk (and little marshmallows) in my hot chocolate, but will settle for water.
As far as the House Red favorite, I really don’t have one. But if I am just looking for good bottle, I’ll find a 88-90 point red for ~$15 and give it a try. European wine is also much cheaper for me as I live in Germany. 92-94 point Italian reds usually cost me $18-$25. My favorite Aglianico is the 2004 Piano Del Cerro DOC – outstanding wine; costs me 15EUR a bottle.

  • QOTD 1: Milk. Always!
QOTD 2: Don`t really have a house wine, always expanding my palate! But http://www.soloperto.it has been making some very nice Primitivos, at a good price point.

  • Anonymous

QOTD1: Trick question GV. Milk if you are making it yourself with the unsweetened cocoa, sugar, etc. Water if your just doing a Swiss Miss or Keurig. Swiss Miss with the mini marshmellows is the shitznit.
    QOTD2: Cannonball

  • I’m writing that one down! What’s the average cost for their primitivo offering?

  • Here in Italy it`s about 3 euros for their basic Primitivo. It`s a simple wine, but shows all the characteristics of the grape. It recently won the Gambero Rosso prize as best quality/price ratio.

  • Zach Eidson

Aglianico. Favorite sleeper grape. Always associate Aglianico with dusty fruit characteristics. If you get a chance try “Ocone”
    QOTD:milk over double-boiler
QOTD2: GD Vajra Langhe Rosso (Piedmont), most poured wine in my house, served it at my wedding and drank with the wine maker all in 2010.

  • QOTD1: Milk.
QOTD2: Ferrari Carano Siena 2008. Normally I don’t like screwcaps, but on this wine I actually look forward to it (maybe it’s the instant gratification of twisting, serving, and enjoying! – practically all in the same motion.)

  • JDR

Nope, and I’m from Belgium and went to taste a premium Belgian hot chocolate. And I just didn’t like it.. πŸ™‚
However, I really like chocolate. It’s not ment to drink …

  • QOTD 1: Water, I make my own mix and it already has powdered milk in it.
QOTD 2: I was all about trying new wines in 2010, so I never really settled into one.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: 2011 looks like primitivo and zinfandels, just have to discover the right one. Our favourite Tuesday night wine was Graham Beck from South Africa, there are a couple of different blends.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I scout my LWS and normally pick up either Vacqueyras or Gigondas as my daily. It’s inexpensive (always less than $20, sometimes hovering near $15), has a flavor profile both my wife and I enjoy (similar to CdP) and readily available. Favorite brands: Pierre Amadieu, Domaine Mas du BouQuet.

2ndQOTD: Milk is my preference, but if it’s got chocolate in it, I really don’t care HOW you make it. I’m in.

  • Anonymous

GV – Educating the masses, I can dig it!

QOTD: I used water with my hot chocolate, but don’t usually drink the bevy! I would say my most often drank wine would be Segura’s Reserve Cava!

  • Jay

    1. Hot chocolate with water–milk is too creamy for my taste.
    2. I’m just started to get my palate acquainted to various wines so I haven’t really settled into a particular favorite

  • what about Feudi taurasi? I love all of these barolo’s from the south, earthy and warm too. cheers,
hot chocolate with Milk and cinnamon.
house wine. rosso di montalcino or cotes du rhone. done

    QOTD 1:Water with a little evaporated(canned)milk.

QOTD 2:Amity Pinot Noir 2007, Willamette Valley,
    Oregon, USA
Been mostly trying different wines, trying to expand my palate.Bit of a noob in the wine world.

  • Don Simpson

My palate is right there with you guys on the Vacqueyras and Gigondas! I was crushing the 2006 and 2007 this year. Thanks for the recs for Pierre Amadieu and Domaine Mas du BouQuet, I’ll have to check those out. Both Arnoux et Fils and Perrin et Fils have good value delicious Gigondas too.

  • Don Simpson

I’m always amazed at the price points for Primitivo. I’ve had some really delicious ones that express terroir for NINE to TWELVE United States Dollars.

  • Gary, Great show exploring an area many people are not aware of! Besides my own wines, I enjoy 2009 Alamos Torrontes as a serious QPR/Chardonnay killer.

    Gotta have milk, Rock on!

  • Anonymous

QOTD 1: Milk. That’s not even a question. It didn’t occur to me there was another way.

QOTD 2: I can’t think of a wine that I bought more than one bottle of for personal consumption last year… too much wine out there to stick around. I’ve got to be REALLY impressed to buy a second time.

  • Anonymous

Plus, Gary, I love that you did a show on Aglianico. Props.

  • Don Simpson

This is a hilarious conversation! I knew what Gary asked about hot chocolate it would spike some controversy. Great stuff.

  • Don Simpson

I had the Kung Fu Girl Dry Riesling last week and enjoyed it quite a bit! Very cool label design too. If I recall correctly it has a bottle of noodles and chopsticks on the back.

  • Don Simpson

Is it the Kung Fu Girl Dry Riesling you like? I had that last week and thought it was quite tasty.

  • Don, as an interesting (somewhat more rustic) alternative, try Vinsobres. It’s a CdR Villages that got its own AOC more recently. Don’t know how widely available they are, but Perrin et Fils definitely makes one. Should be in the same price category as Vacqueyras.

  • EricD

QOTD1: I don’t drink much hot chocolate, but if I do I prefer it to be straight melted choclate with a touch of milk.
QOTD2: My house wine in 2010 was usually a Soave from Gini, Anselmi, or Piero Pan for white, and red I often went with any Valpolicella superiore ripasso I found at a good price. The latter part of the year had me moving more toward Barbaresco however.

  • Don Simpson

GV – You have some serious momentum! These episodes have been focused and jam packed. All Killer No Filler. The Vayniacs are buzzing with comments. This is fun, lets keep it up!

  • Don Simpson

Are the 2009’s ready to drink or still need some time? I agree on the 2008, major PAZZZZ (4 Z’s) πŸ™‚

  • QOTD1: milk definitely
QOTD2: Bonarda from Albani Viticoltori, http://www.vinialbani.it/ita/bonarda.html

  • Don Simpson

Woah, I’ve never heard of Vinsobres. This is exactly why the Thunder Show is awesome, I just learned something new and exciting and I’m definitely going to act on it. Thanks for the great recommendation!

  • Anonymous

No other way to go than milk, if its water its not hot chocolate, in my opinion. I even like to heat it up using the foamer on my capuccino machine, my daughters love that.

As for my table wine, I guess as a couple people mentionned below, Vacqueyras comes to mind, especially the Domaine de Montvac
    http://www.saq.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?partNumber=875443&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001
although my palate has been moving away from the fruity wines and more towards peppery Syrah.
But for a white wine on a week night, definitely Niagara Riesling such as the 2009 Cave Springs Dolomite or 2009 Tawse.
