Great episode on tasting value wines! Loved how different wines from around the world were explored.

It's nice to see quality doesn't always mean high price.

Do you have a favorite budget wine pick from this list?

nope. I will never have/need an iPhone. I really love/want an iPad.

QOTD yes iPhone have some cool wine apps!
are you going with the Suckling pronunciation of your name from now on? 🙂

QOTD: No, I don’t think I could get any other Apple pieces of technology, my 6 year old Ipod color might feel I was cheating on it.

It was nice to see an episode focused on the less expensive wines of reasonable quality out there, I was beginning to wonder after last week when the wines would come back into my price range again. I am a CKC out of Virginia Tech and I can’t help but feel that if this major shift in how Americans treat wine is going to continue, then it is going to rely on college students being exposed to wines of reasonable quality early on in life. In saying that however, I can understand why many college students are hesitant to go that route. Too many have either no idea about the depth of the wine industry, or how to go about finding what types of wines fit them. The latter I can say from personal experience, since I am still experimenting with trying to find what specifically agrees with my palate.

Yes, iPhone and iPad. Love them!

  • Randall

Yo! I just checked your latest 4 beer reviews. Written in a similar style to mine. Agree on everything (mostly) except that I think the Alaskan B.P. (which is most definitely NOT made to style) is an amazingly well made, tasty beer now, and with over a case aging quietly away in my cellar, I’m very certain that it will only get better… Cheers!

  • CKC checking in! UC Davis Enology program!! I don’t have an Iphone/Ipad but I do have an Ipod Touch that I use to play words with friends and listen to podcasts.

Gary great idea for a show! Love the value side of your show. Chinon is awesome but so hard to find! I’ve never had a Tannat but I learned in one of my classes that it is known to be the healthiest of all red wines. We are also doing some interesting research work with it as it has some pretty awesome viticultural abilities. So you all should be seeing it more common in the US in the next few years.

BTW: Why tease us with a free shipping plug?? WTF? You know us CKCs are chomping at the bit for a free shipping notice!

  • QOTD: Android phone and iPad user. iPhone on the shelf.

QOTD: Nope – being that connected gives no quiet time for my brain to work

  • Matt

QOTD: Yes IPhone for about a month!!

I like Tannat when it’s blended with Malbec at a 20/80 ratio. Maybe it’s time for a Cohors show Gary, just make sure they are not all Melbec & Merlot. QOTD: No and no.

  • @Randall – Glad you checked it out. I haven’t done anything with that blog in ages but very cool. I’m glad you came back about the BP from Alaskan. I actually had one about a month ago that has been cellaring. Definitely better than it was, but I just wish people/breweries wouldn’t take liberties with style when naming their beers. I have a few more stashed away and am looking forward to them.

Looking forward to checking out your posts.

Since this is a value play episode I’d like to mention that if you’re into Chardonnay you should seek out Calera’s 2009 Chardonnay from Mt. Harlan. It retails for under $30 and if you’re into points, Parker gave it a 96 which is amazing for a U.S. chard at that price point.

Nice show G! Enjoyed the value play here. I have been looking for some Loire Reds, but my shops I go to have little if any from this area, mostly whites (90% White 10% Red) which I do enjoy. I definately want to get in on the Chinons, Cab Francs. I have been looking a little closer at the Loire Valley lately because it intrigues me just because you don’t here a lot about it and the whites I have had have blown me away.

QOTD: Don’t have either. Still have the Crackberry.

No smartphone, no IPad. Kinda like it that way.

    Right on.
In addition to wine, my posts ‘may contain up to 2% Belgians and barleywines…’

QoTD: I am a MAC guy, but I have yet to do an iPad or an iPhone. For the iPad, we are waiting for the second generation. For the iPhone, we are Verizon folks, so the iPhone has only just now become a reality for us. And, yes, both my wife and I will be investing in the Verizon iPhone.

no not currently, I want an ipad though.. New to wine but I love caymus and you have showed me the way in tokaji

  • QOTD: iPhone. Are you going to make a WLTV wine app, that would be so sweet.

South Africa seems to be bringing out some nice lower priced wines. One of our interns this year was from Stellenbosch and he brought some nice wines with him.

Gary I used to be a CKC and I started watching you when I was in college at Oregon State University (which is home to a degree in Enology and Viticulture). If you took your book tour to Corvallis, Oregon I would totally drive down to see you!

QOTD: Not only do I not have an iPhone or iPad, I haven’t had a cell phone since 2001. The moment my mom stopped paying for it, I realized I didn’t really need one.
Then again, my wife does have an iPhone. So maybe I kinda have half of one, by law.

Sorry the Tannat showed poorly; I do enjoy that variety!

Hippies are good. James Suckling is not a hippie and does need a haircut.

Hey Gary, maybe you can do a episode on california champagne…like schramsberg and mumms. I have watched this show for a long time and finally converted from lurker to poster haha ….thanks alot for your show

  • Anonymous

    neither iphone or ipad

but down with CKC! shout out to thee Oregon state univ and Eastern Oregon univ. Gary u should do free shipping to us out on the west coast for that Chinon. Especially for the struggling college students.

  • Anonymous

    Both.

  • Neither iPhone or iPad… any of this fancy stuff 🙂
I should not logg with my facebook name by the way, becouse you won’t be able to read it 🙂

  • I’m not seeing a link…

I may have to check it out.

  • QOTD: No, but rock the iMac. Planning on getting an iPhone on verizon when the next gen. comes out.

CKC from PSU Behrend in Erie.

  • Mr VON ner Chuk, a great effort today. I love the energy. Like you, I am amidst a torrid love affair with Chinon lately and with Cab Franc in general. The comment about taking a green bell pepper and punching you in the face was priceless and I would line up right after you for the next punch. I have an iPhone and an iPad and bunch of other Apple products. I love them. Oh!! I am down with Uruguay, too. This is a great country, I look forward to better wine.

Nice show, Gary. I am a long time lurker. Not really a “college kid” but in Grad school and poor. I really have learned a lot. Thanks, man.

QOTD: No i do not own an iPhone or iPad, but I wouldn’t be able to live without the books on tape that I listen to on my iPod

  • QOTD: no/no, wish/wish. Love the obscure value shows. I had a solid $10 bottle from Peloponnese, Greece recently—the label was almost as bad as the Tannat’s but I went for it. Speaking of value, I’m about to try the Cantaluna Pinot Noir.

  • Randall

Sorry. I meant my posts here in the WLTV comment section. Most of my reviews, etc is for local (Sacramental, CA) consumption. I’ve been thinking about doing a blog for a while, with various vertical judging results, etc because I love to age beer and wine. Maybe one day I’ll actually put some motion behind all this.

Nice out takes but I thought we didn’t edit?

I forget isn’t this “WINE” Library TV? Although I enjoy my dark beers from time to time, I’ll stick to just “WINE” here. I thought maybe I changed the channel. :O

  • Iphone. I’m still not sure why someone would get an ipad? no flash…apple in total control. A netbook seems superior to me at this point. It’s cool…but that’s it.

Nice show Gary. Yes to iPhone(s) and iPad(s), and long AAPL stock since 1990…

I don’t have an iPad or an iPhone, what do they do?

qotd: i have 2 iPhones (work and personal), and an iPad

  • Alexandre-CF

Hey Gary, Nice energy. With this energy the show is always great.

QOTD: oh yes dude. And i can’t leave without my iPad.

I’m a CKC and i study medicine in campinas- Brazil (puccamp)

  • I’ve mentioned it before, but I am a CKC, attending Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

QOTD: No iPad OR iPhone. No great desire to have them either, despite the multitudes around me in possession of them.

Loved the show and the bloopers! Gary, you’re always tasting new and value wines which make me want to expand my palate more and more. I’ve been trying to get into some of the local wines in SB. I’ve heard killer Pinot Noir is made around here, but I haven’t found much that is interesting and also in my price range. Also, I agree with

Yet another great show, Gary. I haven’t tried Tannat or Chinon, but I’d like to. I think you should put up that Chinon w/ free shipping for the CKCs….we’re all starving, let alone trying to expand our palates!

No iPhone – I had one, but upgraded to Android about a year ago.

  • Randall

You haven’t noticed all the synesthesia going on in this comment forum? Tsk, tsk, NWIDan. Yes, the elixirs Do tend to crossover here at WLTV. Even Gary’s episodes do, from time to time… Hit the archives, oh greenhorn. :D!!

    QOTD: Yes, iPhone. Yes, iPad.
Frankly for almost all of the episodes (I’ve seen every. single. one.) I’ve viewed them via iTunes and often iPhone, AppleTV or iPad. Have to make a point to come back here and comment once in awhile! Love ya Gary.

Also, thanks for doing the value episode Gary. Always enjoy them. Especially when you uncover some real gems.

  • Yes, I do and love it.. Android? Not a phone, only an OS..
