Great episode on tasting value wines! Loved how different wines from around the world were explored.

It's nice to see quality doesn't always mean high price.

Do you have a favorite budget wine pick from this list?

CKC! from ASU (Arizona State University) Im looking forward to trying Chinon thanks for the show. To answer your question I have an iphone and just started an application development company called InTheoryApps based on your book. Crush it was very educational I learned more from your book than I have in class all four years combined!! So THANK YOU

  • Randall

MAJOR Lurkage coming out tonight, Gary.
Apparently you ARE the man! 😉

Gary…only my second comment. 49 and just learning the basics. For whatever reason I never got into wine but have been trying to learn more about the subject while trying new wines. I like your energy and really enjoy your video’s and feel like a sponge trying to soak it all up! I’m in SOCAL just up the road from the Temecula Valley (you profiled a few of their wines) and a Jets fan from afar as I followed Mark Sanchez from High School to USC to the Jets. GO JETS!

Keep up the great work! I’m hooked!

    QOTD: Own an iphone.

No iphone, no ipad. Probably because I am of the OGC (Old Geezer Club). Loved the tasting with James Suckling. I have a bit of an issue with the “serviceable” tag you put on 87-88 point wines. To me, that score is more than serviceable, especially if it’s $10.

  • Randall

GV is harsh on scores. Its just who he is. I haven’t judged wines professionally, but I have done so with beers, and I’m the same way… perhaps a bit too demanding. Cheers!

Gary V! I’m a huge fan, a semi lurker, and I am down with the CKC! I’m at Trent U in Ontario, Canada.
    QOTD: No and No
    Keep it up Gary!

  • I was home sick from work last week and happened to stumble across your site – and I watched like 10 episodes. I like your style – your enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks!

    No iphone or ipad

QOTD: I use my iPhone all the time, including watching WLTV everyday, and past episodes. Things on here have been very smooth the last few weeks. Getting started on disquis was tough (had to do it from my laptop) but smooth sailing since.

Good show today. You know my local wine shop has a Tannat I’ve had a time or two that I’ve liked and it’s in the $10-$12 range. I’ll go by there this week and post it.

Thanks again Gary. You the man.

    Yours,

    B.S.

I’m hollering at all the Boulder, Colorado wine merchants… been wanting to try Tannat for a hot minute since your casual wine Friday’s back in the day when you dropped heat about it for the first time.

I don’t have an iPhone, but I wish I did… funny enough, I work for a TechStars company that produces an iPhone App (BlipSnips). However I do use an iOS4 iPod Touch.

QOTD 1: I do own an iphone
QOTD 2: I started watching around episode #300-#500 and took a break but I am back to your wonderful show, I’m still in the CKC but not for long but more importantly I go to Eastern Washington University which i hope you noticed won the FCS CHAMPIONSHIP!! GO EAGLES!!

ps. Robert Parker said that Arbor Crest winery in Spokane has the best value across the board of all of Washington’s great wineries, I would love to see you try one.

    iPhone.

  • I’ll be honest the main reason I don’t try a lot of the more obscure varietals is because I have a lot of trouble keeping track of them. I’m starting to track everything I drink in Excel so hopefully that’ll remedy the problem. BTW Gary you should still watch the Super Bowl even if the Jets get eliminated in the AFC Championship game because you won’t watch another SB for a long time. The Jets are like the Buffalo Bills of the 90’s Jr.

QOTD: Nope, Droid, want an Ipad though

  • Ever check out Frasca? Great French / Italian wine list and I hear the food is pretty amazing. Hopefully they’ll have your Tannat!

  • QOTD – iPhone.

nice show, obscure ones tend to be a little more hit or miss. Do agree on the S African whites. Great value.

love the outtake the end. way to mix it up…

  • CKC!!!

I started out as a CKC at Longwood University when the show first started 5 short years ago.

Now, after a couple of years in the workforce, I am back in the CKC group as I am getting my masters degree in our nation’s capital at The George Washington University.

    Come to DC GV!

  • Ian

CKC here gonna graduate in June form Portland State University. If you’re gonna be stopping by Powell’s to plug your book you might as well drive the 10 blocks it takes to get up here to PSU and say hi!!!

    QOTD – no

  • I will!

I’ve been to Frasca twice since moving to Boulder last summer. A serious serious wine list and really excellent food! One of my favorites in town, for sure.

  • Christopher Dickens

I’m a PC but have both an iPhone and IPad. Looking forward to the next incarnation of WLTV!

  • I will see u at Powells 😉

  • Thnx Chris, welcome!

    The lurker finally comes out.

My name is Ilya from Brooklyn and I am in the #CKC. I am currently a senior at Stony Brook University in New York studying Biochemistry. Really got into WLTV and wine in general Gary’s appearance on diggnation and since then have been hooked. Saw all of the past episodes ad now I watch every single episode as they come out. Absolutely love learning about wine and trying to gain an encyclopedic knowledge of it. Was even thinking of maybe getting sommelier certification.

    Love ya Gary.

QOTD: No iphone or ipad for me, although I love my Android phone.

Garrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry V! Keep it going man, you have been a great source of inspiration! I’ve been hooked on WLTV ever since my former fav. website TED.com had a best of the web with your Do what you love talk… I honestly just realized how easy it is to comment with the book of faces. I’m a few days away from FINALY having an iPhone! O yea it was the Jim Cramer episode that sealed the deal though. U’r making waves in ways you may never realize! THANK YOU ! ! ! I still don’t get it with the wine though. Maybe i’ve just been exposed to crapy S*!#. O well I still have hope that I’ll fall for something of the liquid persuasion from the raisins fantasy world…Maybe with this summers study abroad trip to France with the weekend in Bordeaux it’ll all start making sense…Shooooot give us some iPhone apps………….mabey of ur inspiration of the week (not day have some breathing room) ! ! ! yea that would be greatly appreciated.

How close will your book tour come to NOLA (New Orleans, LA)?

  • Dang… no THUNDER after Super Sunday…

    QOTD: No, not yet…

  • QOTD: NO on the iPhone and iPad, YES on the Android and the Galaxy Tab.

  • QOTD – Yes on both iPhone and iPad

CKC and Lurker here. Concordia U in Montreal in Finance. 21, drinking wine for about a year. Use the Blackberry Torch, though (sorry). I love value (which is hard to find due to the insane taxes on government controlled liquor (SAQ)), recently I’ve had a great 11 dollar tax in red from Portugal. THANKS!

  • MattB

Gary – great show thanks. Searching for quality wine at good prices is a huge bonus as is your passion to expand knowledge and palates. Please keep it coming.

I have a #question for you Gary that hopefully will interest other #Vayniacs – it is about #Chinon – what are the best 3 Chinons that you have enjoyed over the last 12 months? Would love to get some suggestions for Vayniacs like me to get into Chinon – suggestions much appreciated. Thank you.

QOTD – I have an iPhone which I love – haven’t gone down the iPad route yet – waiting to see what the next gen lineup from Apple looks like.

    Cheers, MattB

    Lord Vaynerchuk,

I feel I must be honest with you. I am indeed a member of the “CKC”. I have not disclosed this information before.. Mostly because I thought it would ruin my reputation as an honorable captain of the seven seas, as well as hurt my chances of wedding the lovely KMurph. I hope you do not think less of me!

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

    Post Scriptum

Presently, I sail not, as I fear the treacherous waters since much “thunder” has been brought as of late!

  • Interesting show! Will have to look into Chinon I have not explored it before. Loved the outtakes! Hey anybody (everybody) know a not too expensive or “heavy” wine they think will age 20+ years. Working on getting somebody into wine and he was looking for something that hey could try every few years. Thought I could tap into the nation.

QOTD: Yes on both iPad and iPhone though I admit I am biased.

  • Glad to see some Uruguay on the table 🙂
    QOTD: No iPhone. No iPad.

    I’m on webOS and Android.

I have an iPhone. Also, I second waynegusmanjr on the NOLA comment. You could do some rad pairings with amazing New Orleans food. And I’d get you a ticket to hear the LPO (check it out). http://www.lpomusic.com

Lurker coming out for you GV
QOTD – I don’t have either an iPhone on an iPad. I do have an android based smart phone, no tablet.

A Tannat from the Madiran region has that potential. Although there are some Madiran’s coming out now in a fruitier style that have less backbone, structure and tannin. So it wouldn’t hurt to do some homework before buying 1 under $20 to lay down for 20+ years.
I’d be interested in trying to find a wine myself for that price and lay it down for 20 years and see what happens. Thanks for the idea Joshua

QOTD – iPhone, no iPad. Thanks for the affordable picks.

  • I clearly meant “portion”, though it would be interesting to see what a “wine tasting potion” might entail.

Also if you can find a Madeira for under $20 that sucker will be good in 20+ years easy. Even if you open it, if you get one from a good producer. Those things are damn near indestructible. Although one could consider that cheating though since Madeira’s are fortified

QOTD: Yes to iPhone/iPod. WLTV app, you say? Hmm…

I guess I am technically a CKC, even though I’m actually in law school. Loyola Chicago Law.

$10-$15 price range tends to be a crapshoot in most regions. Thanks for trying to sift through the mess. Maybe focus on just $10-$15 wines from a value region, such as the Beaujolais show you did a ways back?

  • QOTD: iPad, sort of.

CKCer from Cornell and now Boise State for grad school.

  • Anonymous

    Can feel your buzz GV!

QOTD: Yes on both the iPhone and the iPad.

  • Anonymous

    QOTD: Nope.

Quasi-CKCer checking in. I’m a grad student at Penn State. We were the #1 beer-drinking school last year, I think, but there’s plenty of love for any and all kinds of alcohol around here.

Exciting show! Too bad the Tannat didn’t go well. I had my first Tannat ever this month – Bouza 2006, and I really quite enjoyed it.

I’m from Montreal, although I’m not living there right now. How often can you find wines Gary talks about at the SAQ?

  • Anonymous

Randall oh wise one. Using such big words as “synesthesia”, I had to refer to your scholarly tome wikipedia, whence you snatched such word from. Maybe I cracked one to many off this afternoon because only one sensory pathway is working for me presently. I do follow past episode and have not run across of which you speak. If you can enlighten this “greenhorn” as to which episode of which thee speak, I would be more than happy to follow your sage advise. 😛

QOTD: No Iphone or Ipad. Cool stuff but waiting for the next version. Isn’t that the ongoing answer in tech. Liked the show – enjoy learning about other wines beyond the US.
