nice to see the oak monster back…must be a full moon

  • ALLAN

    Well this sucked *

Qotd: I only buy dirty dirt cheap stuff 🙂

    Cheers!

    too bad the wines sucked
QOTD: dinner at Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester in London. the meal cost equivalent of like.. $600 for two people and did not impress. The start of the night seemed like it was going to be awesome, but the servers seemed unorganized, and snooty. The food was really good, but at that price you want more than just food that tastes good. Don’t regret it, but won’t go back

qotd: Some Shun Cutlery. Since I was so thrilled with the big 10″ Shun chef’s knife I got as a gift a while back, I dropped some cash on a 2 other high end shun knives. Both were pieces of crap. One, a santoku style blade, self destructed. Under normal wear on good boards it developed chips in the blade. On the other, a sushi knife, the handle split. Not sure if their quality has gone down or what, but I won’t be purchasing any more cutlery from Shun. My original 10″ Chef’s knife is still in great shape though.

QOTD: Took a girl out to a $100 dinner a couple of months back. She was boring and surfacy, and didn’t even drink the wine in her glass. Pazzzzzzzzzzzzz. Nexxxxxxxxxt-

GV- next time you do a Kosher show, please talk about Mevushal vs. non-Mevushal. Mevushal in Hebrew means “Boiled” and if a wine is going to be handled by non-Jews at any point, it has to be mevushal. Though the boiling process is very short, it does affect the flavor. I lived in Israel last year and had some excellent non-mevushal wines. Tishbi is one you should have on the show. Unfortunately, religious Jewish culture is just not very conducive to good wine. In Jewish tradition, wine is supposed to be sweet, not complex and balanced and smooth and integrated like the good wine is supposed to be by today’s standards.

  • Most $20-$50 kosher wines can be QUITE solid. Too many (K) wines are made in a big, over-oaked or over-extracted style, but there are some nice examples in the moderately expensive range.

    Gary,

Are you doing anything special for episode 1000????

  • Anonymous

QOTD: 2007 L’Aventure Estate Cuvee (Blend of Cab Sauv and Syrah, from Paso Robles) at around $100.
    * Perhaps this needed a couple more years in bottle. (Drank 1/11)

I had the ’06 L’Aventure Optimus (same varietal blend) 2 nights before for around $30 and it was bringing serious, serious thunder. So with a buddy we decide to throw down on the “big guy” and it was nothing short of an over oaked fruit bomb. Could have been from anywhere in the world – didn’t represent the terroir at all. JamJamJamJamJam.

Nieche-Nieche Estate Cuvee!! But ’06 Optimus was great.

  • Nick

I’m not into Kosher and on top of that dissapointing wines 🙁 Too bad, next ep better!

QOTD: a 400 euro ps3 (incl 2 games) that i bought in december, played on it all december! Yet i haven’t touched it in 2011.

  • Anonymous

Glad you brought this up. As in ALL categories of wine, higher price does not always mean better wine.

  • Jay

Well this was certainly a downer show. At this point in my life I have a hard time paying more than $25/bottle of wine so today’s kosher wines I wouldn’t have even considered in the first place.
QOTD: I was in Baltimore last summer and I ate a fancy seafood place near the pier area. The place was very touristy and the food was underwhelming with an overwhelming price tag.

  • constraints in anything is not my palate, it always forces you to make something lesser then it can be.
No comment on the first wines color, It looked really intriguing.
Good that you are telling like it is. I guess the wine world didn’t like this 😀 But we don’t care because vayniacs change it wether they like it or not!
QOTD: I didn’t buy it but work did, a smartphone that was just abyssmal…..

  • fat chef

Thank you for your honesty. At first I was intrigued, but now I certainly won’t be running out to try some kosher wine.

    Let’s see the couch tomorrow!
QOTD: I am the king of bad big purchases. Recently spent 50 bones on some video editing software that I thought was going to change my life, but I can’t figure out how to even use it :(!!!

    Gas operated corkscrew

  • I haven’t been disappointed with anything I’ve bought. Simple as that.

    Have a nice weekend everyone!

Another high-end Kosher wine to try is Castel (Bordeaux style)

I second the ’06 optimus. A local wine shop had a few bottles for $20 last year, and it was fantastic.

QOTD: I recently bought a blu-ray player because my DVD player stopped working and it was more expensive to repair than it was worth. After getting the player that I wanted I discovered that it wouldn’t play DVD’s that I had burned myself. For an all mighty Blu-Ray player I found that to be pretty disappointing.

  • I spent months researching, buying parts for, and assembling a bicycle from scratch. Spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars and countless hours working on it. Once it was completed I looooved it! But then one day I came home and much to my disappointment, it had been stolen from my backyard.

  • Hey, Sasha got to be in on Kosher show 655…what gives this time? He’s the charm.
Last time he really liked that inexpensive cab from Chile…Don Alfonso

Oh yeah the oakmonster is in the house.

QOTD: maybe my wine fridge, turned to be really small.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

Cool show Gary, good job keeping it real.

QOTD: Bought a laptop off compusa, and while it works well the battery crapped out in the first couple of days, and now the right speaker isn’t working. The manufacturer is supposed to send me a new battery, but now it’s on backorder, and now they want me to send it in to have it repaired, except, I’ve already got it loaded up with all my new software, and busy with a couple of online classes I’m using it for, no time for love Dr. Jones!

  • Come to Virginia Tech. Do it. #CKC

  • Never tried a kosher wine (to my knowledge, anyway). These obviously won’t be my first foray into that realm. Good to-the-point episode, though.

QOTD: Had to be my recent $500 V-Day dinner. Almost soiled myself when I opened the check at the end of the meal. Veiny foie-gras, rubbery lobster, and s#$! service!

  • COME TO VIRGINIA TECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • Gary, CKC here from Virginia Tech. This episode was great, keep the wine knowledge coming! thanks

  • Anonymous

Great show!! Love your enthusiasm for wine and alcohol!!#CKC-Virginia Tech

Reppin’ the CKC’s here from Virginia Tech.. yeeeaaaah WINE yeeeaaaah!! COME TO BLACKSBURG, TEACH US YOUR WAYS.

  • Anonymous

I don’t “get” kosher as a category. It’s kind of like grouping wines that have a blue label. The grouping has nothing to do with the wine. Maybe I’m just insensitive.

QOTD: If it’s expensive, I do my homework so I won’t be disappointed. Also, my budget is limited, so the number of expensive things I can buy is pretty small.

  • COME TO VIRGINIA TECH! we’re down with the #CKC :):):)

Gary VAY-NER-CHUK! your show is awesome! come to Virginia Tech this spring! CKC! Do it.

  • Hokies love wine. Come to Blacksburg dude. CKC

Hey Gary, although the wines sucked today, I really appreciate these kinds of shows. It gives me good information. QOTD: about a year ago I bought a go kart/dune buggy for myself and my kids. But now I consider the thing so dangerous, I won’t let them ride it.

  • Anonymous

Too bad the wines sucked today but hey, the world would be dull if everything was great all the time.
QOTD. A packet of the supermarket’s ‘Finest’ chocolate chip cookies at £1.99. Very dissapointed.

  • Virginia Tech reppin’ the CKC!!!!

  • #ckc Come to Virginia Tech!

  • Fratalina Wine Mixer, 1st Week in May, hosted by Gary V himself. Let’s make this happen. #CKC Virginia Tech oh yeeeeahhhhhhhh.

Yo Gary, I’m down with the CKC’s here at Virginia Tech! You need to come guest-speak in our geography of wine class! Love your show 🙂

  • Wow… that sucks. Yesterday I had two people ask me about Kosher Wines and then to see this review of the big boys of Kosher. Bummer.

QOTD: My newest 9.1 Music Hall Turntable MMF 7.1. I paid too much for it (over a G) and still have yet to set it up with because I don’t have the ideal space for it. WAH Wah wah

Hokie CKC here, Gary V come to VaTech! prof. Boyer loves your show and is a HUGE jets fan!
