This is what WLTV is all about. I had never even heard of Arneis before but now I know a little bit about it and am dying to try some of their wines.

    QOTD 1 — I wouldn’t even have a guess!
QOTD 2 — I’ve had lots of decent whites from Italy, but never one that really was that great. I’ll keep an eye out for Arneis, though, sounds like a variety I’d enjoy

  • Oakmon’s BF

Welcome back! I missed you man.

  • Todd

Was stoked to see you tasting Arneis, I am a big Piedmonte fan, but have yet to try this varietal.
QOTD: Sorry GV, collegiate sports is not my industry, I work in the action sports industry. But, my fav Italian white so far has been Vignalta Pinot Bianco.

    QOTD 1: I don’t watch basketball so I don’t have a prediction.

QOTD 2: To be honest with you I’ve never heard of Arneis, so that’s why I’ve never tried one. I hope to have one in the future though. Thanks Gary!

  • QOTD: No idea (or interest) in March Madness
QOTD side: Ever? Geez, I hate when you ask to just pick one. There’s a lot of Italian whites I love. Maybe a Fruliano? Or a Falanghina? You want me to pick one?

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I have had a decent amount of Italian white wine and I’ve had some that I have dismissed as colored water. But I am sure (for Italy’s benefit) I am looking in the wrong places. I hate to sound bland but I have had some Pinot Gris that was very agreeable.

One of my favorites wines would be Azienda Agricola Valentini Trebianno dAbruzzo 2008.

Its Stunning. A producer that I really love…

    Top 10?

QOTD: Not really into basketball, personally I’m more into hockey, football, and baseball. As far as whites from Italy, my favorite at the moment is Vernaccia di San Gimignano but I’m also a huge fan of Greco di Tufo (as we talked about on Wine&Web a couple of weeks ago), Falanghina, Soave (depending on the producer), and Friulano. I’ve had a couple of Sicilian whites made from Inzolia that I’ve liked but those are a little inconsistent for me still.

Also, I FedExed a letter to Wine Library for you. Look for that to arrive tomorrow, Gary. I’m really anxious to hear from you.

    Arneis
    Awesome

  • Really good show.

A little too early for me to give away all of my secrets to the perfect bracket, so I’ll wait…

QOTD: My favorite Italian white has to be from Cabonnon (or something like that). It’s a sauvignon blanc they do but it’s always done in a style that seems oxydized… and I LOVE it. They age forever. I can’t get enough of it.

  • Anonymous

welcome back G. will watch later……..forced viewing of House with the woman…

  • I like the Arneis…even when it is more rustic, when the floral quality gets a little oxidative…
even holds up over time…not as fresh but certainly interesting. Just grabbed a bottle of Seghesio Arneis 2001 at a local scratch and dent sale for a pittance…little ding on the label, and soon enough we’ll see how it shows.
Satellite is moving slow tonight…I’ll run down to the barn and put the burros to bed, this should be ready when I get back…

QOTD #1: I don’t yet have a strong idea, but I’m quite confident that Ohio State will be an overrated seed.

QOTD #2: Havent been a big white wine fan across the board but a few of your recent shows has encouraged me to explore some whites.

I have never had a white wine from Italy! I really can’t say why, i guess just because I don’t drink white wine much and when I do I go for a riesling or sav blanc. I need to expand my white wine pal.

    Ohio State will be there

  • NJ Big Chris

That virginia tech video is awesome, LOL!

  • phew! I thought there wasn’t going to be an episode today! I was watching older episodes to ease the wait.
Awww! I already ordered the book…
qotd: I’ve had italian white wines but not very many. I’ve also never had one good enough that I can remember the producer. So I guess that answers why I haven’t.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Great change of pace varietal! I’ll certainly be on the lookout!

QOTD 1: I’m going with UNC, BYU, or Texas

QOTD: I’ve never had a white from Italy, that I can think of, but this has me heading to the store tomorrow.

Glad to see you back, Gary!

Very good episode and will look for the Arneis.

QOTD – I do not know who will win but I will be pulling for my beloved UT Longhorns.

QOTD – A Pinot Grigio/Verduzzo blend – Masi Masicano(sp?) a lovely white wine with a very lemony foundation. Around $15 to $16 a bottle. Very nice indeed.

  • fat chef

    Purdue all the way baby!!!

    QOTD: Eco Domani pinot grigio!

  • Anonymous

I always enjoy the NCAA tourney. Sure, i’d like to see a NC team do well, as I live in Greensboro, but I just like the competition.

Italian Whites? I enjoy Pinot Grigio, but lately I’ve been drinking Verdicchio, which is very nice, and comes from the same area in Italy as my family.

  • Anonymous

QOTD – I have had Tocai Friulano and enjoyed it very much. Will give Arneis a try. Can never stop expanding the PAL!

  • Anonymous

Thanks Gary for coming back strong! Lots of “THUNDER”! Well worth the wait! Totally enjoyed this show and can’t wait for the next installment tomorrow.

QOTD1: Even though my daughter goes to Purdue University and I expect them to show well, my heart lies with “UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY”! GO AGGIES!

QOTD2: The only Italian white I have ever had is a Pinot Grigio and they are always good. I will be trying others after the last few eps you introduced us to.

QOTD2: I dig Italian whites, especially when I’m having seafood. I’ve actually had the Giacosa Arneis and found it to be quite attractive due to its aromatics and minerality. But if I had to really choose one region (and passing over my other favorites such as vermentino di sardegna and campanian falanghina) I’d have to go with Alto Adige. I’ve had some great gewurztraminer and kerners from there.

  • Anonymous

Is it really worth the $150+ price tag?

  • Anonymous

Italian white wines? Hmm.. For some reason, it seems contrary to those full bodied super tuscans.

QOTD #1 Pitt is definitely going to show! They got ripped off with all of the losses the other teams had and didn’t get moved up. I don’t know if they’ll win, but they will have a good showing.

QOTD #2 Now that you mention it, I think the only Italian white wine I’ve ever had is prosecco. I do enjoy it and I have had lots of different producers.

You’ve inspired me to go out and try something new.

Dude! VT is nuts!!! That was awesome. I swore I was at a b-ball game

  • I played the whole video but didnt really watch. I was tasting thru a tawny port and a sherry. They were ok. getting closer to 1000. exciting stuff

  • Anonymous

Oh, I totally forgot about Vermentino di Gallura! Love that one, nice shout out

  • great showing! Nice to see a great hit across the board, and at under $20…
recently had the Pio Cesare Arneis while in the airport, and it pleasantly saw me through to the gate…another from San Giuliano back at the holidays that was also quite enjoyable (and affordable).
currently sampling the 2010 LaCrosse we made from Lake Champlain fruit…had a friend who is in the biz thinking that it could be a dead ringer for a cool Mediterranean island white…no joke orchid hothouse and seashore on the nose, white peach, white grapefruit and saline on the palate, probably 12% alc., and still has balance despite screaming acidity (ph 3.2 TA .89 for the wine geeks)…never thought it would come out so well.

QOTD: hmmm…research required, I may hold off for the final four…
QOTD2: in general I am really liking Vermentino, but by far one of the most intriguing single wine, is the Walter De Batte / Prima Terra ?Harmoge? 2007 (Liguria, Cinque Terre) (Vermentino, Bosco, Albarola)- maceration on skins, unfined, and unfiltered this wine is an absolute shape shifter….if you have the patience, letting one glass unfold over the course of a couple of hours, it is quite an experience…only to be taken in small sips, so as to elongate the process.

  • I don’t know…how does it work if marcoga doubled up, up above?

  • worth the investment of time…
if she is a Hugh Laurie fan, does she know about “Jeeves and Worchester”? If not you could be in a position to score some serious points…he does excellent work with Stephen Fry.

  • Anonymous

I tried some Cinque Terre Bianco while I was over there a couple of years ago and found Bosco to be a really good grape for a casual lunch with some seafood that came right out of the ocean, then again I didn’t really know much about wine at the time. What are your thoughts on the grape?

    That video was nuts!

    10 and counting….

QOTD: Really like Soave from Veneto.

  • OH! and GV, don’t sweat the butter, enjoy it all you like! 5Tbsp a day is better than margarine or none…Rowan Jacobsen just did another segment of “The Vermont Table” ( //shameless plug for Vermont Public Radio), extolling the virtues of dairy, and it’s roll in REDUCING heart diesase, based on scientific study
    http://www.vpr.net/episode/50550/#
    Cheers! or rather, Cheese!

  • QOTD 1: As an ACC loving lurker it pains me to say this . . . KU over Texas for NCAA Champ, Duke and Ohio St. round out Final 4 . . . BOOOO Big East, learn how to play fundamental basketball, and maybe I’ll show some love.

QOTD2: Cause you’ve not shown me a good Eye-tal white yet.

    p.s. – Time to show more love for the former #1 U.S. wine producing state . . . N.C.!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Don’t really keep up with College Basketball. Duke, Notre Dame…… Now on with the wine. Favorite Italian White happens to be Arneis. Ponzi(Oregon) produces a nice American Arneis.

  • QotD1: My gut says that Duke will repeat. They’re better this year than they were last year. Kansas also has a real shot, but they haven’t had to play any really tough road games this season.

QotD2: I have not had any Italian white wine. Why? Because I am really in my wine infancy. I think that Arneis and I will soon become acquainted, however.

  • To be honest, I think that this is the first time that I have encountered it, and in this particular blend, it’s hard to form any kind of opinion about that particular varietal. That said, it sounds like a grape for the people, and for the everyday, and based on your experience, I will stay on the lookout.

GV – 1. While I haven’t had the 2009 before, I have had both the Giacosa and Vietti Arneis in prior vintages. (I once tried the Cordero di M, and wasn’t as fond of it.) I think there is a chance you got a bad bottle of the Giacosa, which I have uniformly found to be outstanding, certainly never acidic or “frizzy”. 2. The stuff inside eclairs is an egg based custard. 3. QOTD: Too many Italian whites to pick one favorite. While it will earn me the enmity of all CW posters, the Les Cretes Cuvee Bois Chardonnay is up there. So is Jermann Vintage Tunina. Several Fianos (including Planeta Cometa, from Sicily, although I still like a few from Campania even better). Anselmi Capitel Croce (a Soave type wine from the Veneto). Villa Bucci Riserva Verdicchio from the Marches. Kofererhofer Sylvaner R from Alto Adige. Cervaro della Sala (a Chardonnay blend from an Antinori property in Umbria that also makes a mouthwateringly good Sauvignon Blanc). I could go on. On a variety/QPR basis, I think Italian whites are number 1 in the world. While France has terrific variety (Beoyond Burgundy, there is Alsace and the Loire and Rhone valleys, among others) and great quality, the prices are very high compared to Italy. No other country comes close to these two.

  • QOTD: OHIO STATE!
QOTD (2): Radikon > Gravner. But Bucci Verdicchio…and Ramandolo.
