EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Bummer 🙁 My 32 bottles of CdP 07 did not sell at tha auction today. Well I might have to drink them instead. Anyone up for a tasting, let’s say 10 bottles?

  • Lisa S

I’m surprised they didn’t sell. I wonder why? Don’t worry, we are here for you, Anders! Always ready to help. When is the tasting? 🙂

  • I talked to the auctioneer. he said that we could try in october. It is always tricky, you never know who is up for a bid . So I’ll try in october again.

I got the Corison Kronos 1996. 6 bts for 73 dollars a bottle. I think that was a great deal 🙂 I saw that the winery sell them for 200!!!!
    https://www.corison.com/store/index.cfm?fuseaction=view&category_id=1

The lot of Corison cab 1997 12 bts did not sell all the bids were to low. Asking price was 1045dollars, bid ended at 930

  • Reserve de la Comtesse 2004. The second wine of Chateau Pichon-Loungeville Comtesse de Lalande.
Nice scent of cherry sauace and black currant jam on top of a ceder cake 🙂
Taste is lush, medium bodied with lots of red berries at first souronded ina silky drape of light spices then transforming to sandy tannins with black and chili pepper stirred with dark chocolate and a hint of black currant. Long dry finish with nice pepper heat.
How can a wine be 2/3 silk then turn into hot coarse sand paper? Fascinating and fun.

    Cheers friends

Friday will be an Amarone tasting. Vintages from 1960’s to present. Stay tuned .

  • Lisa S

Yes, try again..Maybe someone with a bit of sense and a few dollars will purchase the wine. Good deal on the ’96 Corison!! Wow.

  • Lisa S

Sounds lovely and one that I would like. I am definitely buying the ’09 vintage of this wine.

  • Ramos Furtado

All said and done Gary. Indeed a great achievement on your part. Do you
include GOD in this achievement? What is your motivation to ‘keep on
keeping on’? Do you believe that all that you possess in terms of
talent, good friendships, your family and particularly your children is a
gift from God? My prayer for you and your family is may God keep you under his guidance and on the ‘straight and narrow’. You are nothing without the breath of life.
You may say what has this got to do with ‘Wine’. I see pain in your eyes. God Bless 🙂

  • Bertani Amarone tasting friday. (translation by Google, I hadn’t the stamina to write it englsih after doing the swedish notes.)Made without malolactic fermentation, ie, retaining much of the lactic acid in the wine for it to be stored longer.
Very original wines, not at all like Amarone as we know. Not sweet, not strong alcohol despite all bottles are 15%
1962Brick red with hints of rost.Stall and kara dimensional mixed with soil and dull öreter noseA little port wine aromaSince taste slightly sweet in the beginning with cherries and dried plums. Smooth as silk but dry as sand soil. White pepper and a bit of tobacco in the aftertaste
1967Looks like an old sherry, earthy brick red.The scent carries streaks of red berries, hay, earth and a little, yes sherry. It smells actually a little track too.Samkenär filled with dried fruit, plums, raisins, cherries, a little cranberry, high acidity that complements the acid found. Silky lean.
1974Brown Tired. The scent is a bit portvinsakting with dried plums and a bit prickly. There is also a large part of alcohol and I think I know cauliflower (?)The taste is a bit sour red fruit, high acid, yet it feels a little wine vattningt, lacks a little of the peppery as the others had.
1980blood color. Smells a little turpentine mixed with pine, lime, sour cherry and port wine (dry plums). tastes better than the smell. Very high acidity which highlights red bärtobak and minerals. Some very aches caused by the Slavonian barrels 🙂
1994dull red, perhaps because it is not filtered. Smells a little peppermint and then nettles, cherries, light soil and minerals. The taste is of red currant, black pepper, cherry, tannins that are tiny. The aftertaste is a fungus with soil and sour cherries. A little alcohol flavor is there in the form of a bitter middle of a sour finish
2003Burgundsikt red. The scent is light. Spicy wet soil with plums and cherries, tobacco. MOst fruit of all wines trostt that description. The taste is dark red fruit with a bit of iron, earth, white pepper. Dry as sand, as well as tannins appear on your tongue. Long dry aftertaste of cherry pits
The prices of these wines I dare not tell. Search them and see 🙂

  • Here I am, sweeping the floors and checking the mail. The Domster is still looking for his next stage in life and yet the only thing available right now is a gig at the local wine shop. Who really wants an old codger from the print industry?

I have been asked to extend my “D-Day” (departure, demise, denigrating, etc) for another 3 weeks so at least someone loves me. Anyway, I miss this place, the people (you know who you are) and of course, my men, Gary V and Mott.

Just a bit sentimental right now but alas, they are not forgotten and especially Lisa, Anders and NWIndianaDan who I see below stopped by for a chat!

Since this is the Fall season, let’s kick this up a notch and get to 5k comments. I see they have resolved the number of comments issue. Thanks Mott.

    Cheers,
    Dom

P.S. I’m having a Patz & Hall Chardonnay right now and it is delicious. I had it at the beach about a month ago and it is usually not as good when I get home but this is very nice. Oh oh, Lisa, I also had the Ponzi (lower end) Pinot and it was fantastic. I need to get the vintage but guessing ’10?

  • Hello Dom, long time no see. So does the local wine shop carry any hidden gems? I found a Deus Ex Machina Cdp 07 for 88 dollars in a small shop in a small town in Denmark late june. 505 is the going price on wine-searcher 🙂
I bid on some PatzHall Chard in septembers auction here in my country, yes we have only one auctioneer for alcohol, state monopoly and all. Didn’t get it.

Tonight I started my second wine course. This time more grape oriented. Tonight we tasted Riesling. Boy is there a big range on those !! Best wine tonight was
Brand Riesling Grand Cru 2009 from Cave de Turkhiem. Acid and structure and peach and apple and minerlas and…

  • Lisa S

He’s back! Good to see you here, Dom.
Ugh.. tough times. Something good will come your way soon..I just know it. Keep the faith.

Love Patz & Hall chard – it’s been a couple of yrs since I’ve had one! I’m also a fan of Ponzi Willamette Valley, but haven’t had one in a while. I almost bought it the other day. Too funny. 🙂 They have a lower end blend called “Tavola” which is about $22 and sells really well. The step-up blend is just “Ponzi” and about $32 – delicious. Both good value wines.

Yes, fall is here! My favorite season. Wish I was in New England though. Nothing beats leaf peeping in beautiful New England in the fall. Crazy heat wave right now in Northern CA. Yikes I’m melting. 🙂

  • Wednesday dinner wine Corison Kronos 1996. Butter boiled potatoes with grilled beef and a roman sallad topped with mustardmarinated red onion and peppers,, oh forgot the whiskey sauce.
1996 and still deep bordeuax red and with a fruit scent that knock your black and blue with all its fruit in the same color. Light streaks of rose and minute toffe vanilla. On the palate first very silky with generous blackberry, dark raspeberry fruit slowly turning into blueberry with chocolate, mid palate with sandy tannins and very faint notes of white pepper and then the back end with bountiful of lush black fruit marmelade on the dry side, long dry finish that resembles black tea. 12,8% alcohol contained totally. structure good, body medium to full, nice acidity… Is this a 90 pts wine? No, more like 94-95 for Mr Nilsson. This was truly good.

  • Lisa S

🙂 Love this review. I feel Iike I was there and drank the wine with you! So glad to hear that the ’96 Corison Kronos showed well. 🙂 Low alcohol too. Awesome.

  • Third day now and it still holds up “beautifully”

  • Wind Gap Pinot Noir 2009. It has a good amount of earth and sheep but on the nose. Muted fruit with mushroom aromas and faint cranberry and cherry fruit
On the palate you are met with two layers of taste. One big earthy, spicy foundation with sandy tannins, mushroom and a bit of pine wood and then a top layer and a lush dark red fruit of the non sweet kind. It?s like a two layer cake where each layer has it own life, slipping and sliding in the mouth. The lush fruit layer slides down the throat easily and leave you with a dry dusty feel of chalk, earth, soy and mushroom. A bit of molten cherry maybe. The back end of this flavor is long. I have a hard time to decide if this is good or not, but somehow it feels alright. It?s a Pinot designed to be this way I think and the acidity is really good in balancing the earthy tones. Maybe this will be even better in 2 years. the only problem is I only had this bottle 🙂

I saw that Gary had tasted and rated it. http://dailygrape.com/wines/180-2009-wind-gap-sonoma-coast-pinot-noir

  • Lisa S

I had a Wind Gap pinot about a year ago… I thought it was good, but not enough to buy more. Was curious to hear your thoughts. I remember thinking it was too young and needed a few years. Interesting and thoughtful review, as always. Thanks, Anders.

  • Well, Now day three and I say Hello strawberries and strong white pepper! This wine have opened up in the fridge. A lot of nice red fruit with prominent strawberry and on the palate more lush and the two layes more in tune and the finish is hot with pepper and acidity. This might have needed a couple of more years untouched 🙂

  • Making my rounds to check the mail and sweep the floor. Looks like things have been quiet. The Fall season is upon us and a good time to start pulling out some nice Volnay 1st crus and the like. A co-worker gave me a bottle as a “going away” present and it was absolutely wonderful. Those French make some major kick-ass pinots. Yummy.

    Take care everyone.

    Cheers!

P.S. I didn’t make it out to Carmel for the harvest. ;(

  • NY Pete

So where have all you diehard vayniacs been in the last month or so???

  • Lisa S

Well look who popped in! 🙂 , It’s not as easy to see new comments on the “new” disqus. Above your comment, see “discussion” drop-down menu and search for new or newest. Cheers! Come back and visit once in a while.. L

  • Got time now when there is no NHL 🙂

  • Yes, we have been slacking the past month but good to see you stop by. Everyone should take a “Vayniac Oath” to visit at least once a week to make sure everyone is doing well and enjoying some good wines.

  • So sad. 🙁

My winter will be listening to scores and highlights of the NBA which I hate with a passion. Almost as much as white zin. 😉

  • Love this episode!

  • Friday wines. Sorry for reviewing the wines from ?my chateau?
but I have to try them once in a while 🙂 Hope everyone have a nice weekend.

    2010. 13,5% Owhoaa… cherry, raspberry and blackberry

“I’m melllting.” Funny, one of if not THE greatest movie of all time.

  • You can get a bottle of the ’96 at KLWines for $70.

    http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=301337

I also read on WS that it was rated at 87 points? Maybe bidders were referencing WS? I have no clue.

  • Lisa S

@Dom: Thanks. Yes, I see it is listed on K&L website for $70, but not in their inventory. They have 0 bottles.. Did you just buy my wine? Just kidding. I hope all is well.

  • To the thursday dinner i poped on of my 30 2007 Cdp’s. Domaine Mathieu
Kind of closed secnt. Faint red berries, with wood, earth and spruce pine ingredients. Taste is much more explosive with plum and red fruit up front followed by silky white pepper tannins and ending with a strong chili flavour and woody note. One might think that is the alcohol talking, but that usually feels back in the throat, the chili dry wood is at the front of your mouth. Opend a couple of hours, more red fruit on the nose and more velvety tannins on the tounge, but still true to initial flavour.

  • Saturday wine Domaine Vieux De Lazaret CdP 2007

A nose of light red fruit mixed with some acidity from dried cranberry.
Also a scent of dry earth.
Taste is red fruit with black pepper and gravel. Medium body.
Heat lands on the middle part of your tounge and the red fruit alk cherry pops up more clear. Silky smooth back end with light red fruit lemonade flavours.

  • Continuing my journey through my stash of CdP 2007 with Domaine de Villeneuve

Dark blood red, bordering on black. Sniffy sniff have to big features, first a ripe black fruit bomb, then a alcohol/mint character. Faint streaks of dirt and spice. On the tongue it is both light and heavy. Silky smooth and tannins are like super fine dust. First a black fruit explosion on the jammy side, then a ripping pepper feel, lots of heat. Again, the alcohol I usually feel at the back of the throat, this heat is on the middle of the tongue wandering forward. Nice acidity mid on but that disappears and the back end is more a black and blue fruit salad with red licorice in the mix. The light and heavy feel is vexing. Maybe it is the 15% alcohol that is talking. The wine is very easy drinking but the effect is heavy, I don?t know. But all in all it was a very nice wine for my palate this Friday evening.

  • Sounds yummy to me on a cool Fall Friday night. We need one of those “Laid Back Fridays” blasts from the past.

  • OK, do you go first 🙂

  • Happy Birthday Gary and a greetings to your family as well.

  • Thank you. Have a nice weekend.

  • NWIndianaDan

    HELLOoooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving. Popped the cork on 2 Bordeaux. 2008 Chateau Brane-Cantenac and a 2008 Chateau d’ Issan. Both were very good, but the d’ Issan was a clear winner in my book. Love them Bordeaux! LEFT BANK! 😉

    Miss Everyone,
    Nostrovia!

  • Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Good. d*Issan have I tried, the 06. A decent wine. How did you find the 08’s Are they ready to drink? The few I’v tasted have been kind of muted and with plenty of tannins/wood. 07’s have been really light and easy drinking but bordering on thin…
tested my chateau’s (Chateau de Haux (entree des meres) 09 and 10 and they had plenty of fruit for being young. Drinkable now and beyond.

  • My man Mott. Hope all is well with you and the family.

Did the Tokay treat you well though that was long ago.

    Go G-Men

  • Yo yo my friend. Glad to hear your Thanksgiving went well. I bought an ’09 Margaux the other day, Zede de Labegorce http://www.thewinebuyer.com/sku55614.html that reminded me of “sheep’s butt” on the nose. Approachable now.

For Thanksgiving, I brought four bottles to the table. Now to remember . . .

    Belle Glos Pinot

Antica Terra (winemaker of the year) Pinot Noir (The hit of the evening)
