Sauternes is great but yes it’s pricey. Gary why not do a show on some stickies from other parts of the world? (2002 D’Arenberg Noble One from Aus is great).

Everyone should check out the roquefort/sticky wine combo, it’s the whole salt/sugar at the same time thing. Like salted and sweet popcorn in the same tub, seriously try it, it’s bizarrely delicious!!!!!

Cheer up Gary! We love you like family.

QOTD: Thanks for bringing us a vertical of Sauternes. I have fairly limited experience with them but have really enjoyed the few I’ve tried. Most recently I had one (an ’01 but I don’t recall the producer) paired with foie gras in some kind of Moroccan-inspired preparation. Excellent! My favorite Sauternes thus far was a ’90 Suduiraut.

So many of my friends hate sweet wines ๐Ÿ™

Just love them with a nice piece of cheese, some fruit, or on their own.

Great show. Will get the 1990.

Sauternes – Yes I do. I haven’t had a ton over the years though.

QOTD: I actually have had a Chateau D’Yquem Sautern about 2 years ago at a Super Bowl Party. I don’t know the exact vintage but it was around 10 years old. It was amazing then, and I’m certain I’d appreciated it even more now that my pal is more developed.

Gary, Regarding your deflated mood, although I am not happy that you are sad, I’m OK with you having some down days. No one is happy all the time. I accept you where you are today, and don’t need you to be anything other than yourself.

    Hey Mr GV

Greetings from Denmark, and from a long time viewer but a rare commenterร‚ยด.

Just wanted to say – I don’t see the number of comments being that important.

I personally only make a comment, when I feel I have something real to say – and I guess the inspiration just wasn’t there yesterday – sorry ๐Ÿ™‚

And YES I love sauterne – and I was actually a bit taken a back over how “quietly” you went over these usually amazing products – especially the 1990.

But still! – a thousands thanks for doing today’s show (and yesterdays, and the one on the day before that, and the one before that and the one before that, and …)

QOTD: I like sauterne very much, although it’s just an occasional treat for us.

The first time we ever tried a sauterne was last Spring after watching an episode of WLTV. I can’t remember why, but you wanted something to fix your palate (was it after the pink zinfandel tasting?). My husband and I were both getting over a nasty influenza that had impaired our tasting and sniffy-sniffing ability. We hadn’t had wine in a couple of weeks, and we decided to get some sauterne to fix our palates. It was a fabulous wake-up for our tastebuds. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Syrahhhhhhhhh

Dude? Who are you and what did you do with our hero?

QOTD: I have a sauterne in my cellar but I’ve never had one. It’s a 2004 Les Caves Fleury Chais de Meribel. Anyone know if it’s any good?

Gary, interesting show today comparing three wines different vintages.
QOTD- I haven’t tried a Sauterne yet, but I plan to. Have a great day!

  • SIR Gary Vaynerchuk should have done this show. Sauternes would be right up his alley and would have allowed Gary to stay true to his threat of not doing the show because yesterday didn’t get the requisite 1,000 comments.

  • QOTD: I Love Sauternes!

  • Vette Tony

QOTD: Never tried Sauternes mostly because of the cost.

  • AVP

QOTD: Yes I do. You’re gettin’ chlorine, but one very distinct flavor I get often from sauternes is a super glue component or sometimes paint thinner. Like dried apricot slices glued together and poured honey all over them.. Nice. Tomorrow I’m having various french dessert wines at a tasting with a french wine importer. Yam-yam.

Qotd – can’t really say for sure because I’ve only had a couple, but I was guess that I probably am – or will be once I start drinking more desert wines.

Thanks for doing a show anyway GV – makes my day a little bit brighter!

  • JC

Thanks for the show Gary. I watched yesterday’s show when I got in from work at 2AM last night and I left a comment. QOTD: Sauternes kicks!

QOTD: Yes I have enjoyed Sauternes many times – usually with Foie Gras as an appetizer. I have had 2001 Chateau Rieussec which was delicious and the 2003 wasn’t that bad either. Never had the D’Yquem. I actually bought a few bottles of Sauternes from WL (can’t remember the name) that weren’t of the same caliber, but for the price were okay(not great). I have a couple of 2005’s sitting around. Speaking of which, you have spoken at length of Bordeaux but how was 2005 Sauternes rated?

I was going to write something about “cheer up about yesterday’s comments,” but realized that it must have been a let down to do the Spread the Thunder contest drawing, pick a lucky Vayniac, give away 5 Apple TV’s and 25 schwag packs. It probably doesn’t occur to lurkers that their comments are payback for the WLTV show. Anyway, have some more cheese, cheer up and turn the page for tomorrow.

Regarding Sauternes, I love the stuff. The only thing that prevents me from drinking it all the time is the price. I had a ’96 Guiraud a couple of days ago that I thought was really nice, but what the heck do I know?

How about some Banyuls sometime soon?

I had never had a dessert wine until WLTV…..now I absolutely LOOOOOOVE them (what’s not to love). So thanks for that.

….and stop being such a Tewkesbery girly-man…..you get more love than anyone on the friggin’ planet. That upscale-living softened the Belarus boy!!

aldownunder: Noble One is produced by De Bortoli not D’Arenberg (although Darrys do a noble wine also, just not the Noble One).

Agreed though it is a very good wine. Especially when looking at the price in comparison to good Sauternes.

Good ep, GV. I adore Sauternes…looking forward to the ’05 Guiraud i got on futures!! That was a great ep to watch…thanks for popping those bottles for the show. Sauternes and foie gras is one of my absolute favorites – I know its a cliche pairing, but it really is perfect.

We have a few sauternes from the mid 1970s that my girlfriend’s dade gave us – and, in my opinion, they are just starting to hit their stride.

QOTD: Love it! And darn lurkers…..POST COMMENTS!!

    Hey Gary,

Sorry to see you down. For all the work that you do as well as the passion you bring day in and day out it is sad to see the lack of comments. I myself feel bad that I have not left as many comments as I should have. I also wanted you to know that is was a joy to meet you at the Vayniac Cab kickoff party this December. Keep up the great work. You are truly inspirational!!!
