GV: I watch you to get cheered up and excited about wine. I feel like getting a two buck chuck and getting drunk after watching today. Where has my wine muse gone? Get the thunder back!

  • SS Chris

oh forgot the QOTD: Yes I’ve had a Sauterne….thanks to an great small offline this summer at BLT Steakhouse(Tampa, Tampa’s POPS, Paul, Brooklyn Paul, KAHUNA, E-Rock, Barbotus, Julius and TheDumbPhase…Ian had to cancel at the last minute…you were invited but blew us off). And it was the 1990 d’Yquem per the ridonkulous generosity of the Dumb Phase….can you imagine, the first Sauterne I ever had was that?

HUGE PROPS to James (TDP), but also to you (see….more GV love)…as the offline wouldn’t have happened without WLTV. 🙂

Sheesh sorry your bummed gary. 600+ is a lot of comments though! And thank you for doing the different vintages, very interesting.

QOTD: Yes, but very inexpensive ones, and never too old, unfortunately.

  • damon aka unknownwine

Sadsack Gary. Sorry we didn’t come through for you yesterday, even though I did my part. I’m with you on the Sauternes and Fois Gras, especially when it has some kind of fruity sauce.

    any killer 05 sauternes???????

  • CuriousInStLouis

Sauternes make me moan out loud!!

Your comments about the petrol scent is dead on. For me it comes across as burnt rubber and is not very prominent.

Green apples with bleu cheese and Sauternes is one of the finest moments in life…MMmmmmm!!

Sorry you didn’t get your thousand comments yesterday Gary. I haven’t even finished watching the episode yet, though, so you should be able to count on at least one more once I get through it. One comment at a time, eh?

QOTD: I’ve had dessert wines, but never had a Sauternes. Maybe someday.

Not sure why you are in such a down mood. You have a ton of friends … loving family … successful + fun job … more than your share of fame … etc. Time to COWBOY UP!

  • Andy

Hey G thanks for sharing the world of Sauternes with the Nation…..
QOTD— A Sauternes is a great dessert wine, but we always forget about it…
usually have a late harvest Reisling or a great Muscat..

Sauternes..? I used to work for a guy who loved the stuff so I’ve had one or two – mainly on his expense account. I also had a truly great desert wine in Catalunya, produced locally, but cannot remember what it was. Wrote it down somewhere but…

Must also give a big shout out to Marcelo Irurita who is the coolest wine producer I have ever met (though that isn’t really saying that much). His family, in Uruguay, produce a great desert wine: Botrytis Gewurztraminer Irurtia. Support the good guys and check it!

QOTD: I like sweets occasionally but, I am afraid to drink a sweet wine since that is not my preference. I would like to taste one, but a whole bottle… Nope, cant do it

Qotd: Like Sauternes quite a bit. I haven’t had much, but I bought 2 half bottles of a 2003 vintage 2 years or so ago. Brought some home to mom and dad and had it with some blue cheese from a local producer in MN. Was a great time.

I have tasted some fine sauternes Ch, dYquem 1959, Chateau Guirand Sauternes 1st Grand Cru 1962, ,Ch. d’Arche Sauternes 1967, and Ch. Luduirant Sauternes 1962.

But I think (I also like rieslings) the German Beerenauslese and TrockenBeerenauslese better than sauternes, has much better feel in the mouth and the nose is more flowered-fruity.

I have a 1976 Schneider’sche Wehlener Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese,, 1976 Schneider’sche Wehlener Mhnzlay TrockenBeerenauslese and a 1964 bottle Schloss Vollrads TrockenBeerenauslese (given to me by my mother a Christmas long ago) sitting in the cellar awaiting their drinking!!

Have had some great dessert wines-just last weekend shared a beautiful amber colored 2002 Sine Qua Non “Noble Man” -pricey at $80 per half bottle. The bottle is cool, which I am a sucker for. Also can’t wait to open up a 2005 Jorge Ordonez Especcial Malaga. Never had the pleasure of a Chateau D’Yquem, but loved the Chateau Rieussec that I tried a while back-can’t remember the vintage. Eiswein, Trockenbeerenauslese, love them all. Wine drinkers who say they won’t drink white don’t know what they’re missing.

Thanks for the show today GV, I adore Sauternes. I’d be pissed about the no 1000 comments as well, they did it for your ‘real’ b-day, so why not WLTV’s 2nd b-day? Hmmm. Everyone must like you more than the show 😉
QOTD: Again, love Sauternes, I’ve had that 2001 Fargues and it rocked my world – paired it with Creme Brulee, unreal pairing, to die for.

  • First I have to admit I have been a lurker, but not anymore. I watched the show yesterday and I thought it was great. I’ve been meaning to tell my friend to watch and I was really going to last night but I didn’t because I don’t know if he would really care for it. I’m such an idiot. How could he not like it? So I’m going to go tell him to watch right now and I’m going to make sure he watches yesterdays episode first and then maybe a couple of the classics. I’m sure he won’t be able to stop watching and he’ll start looking forward to it everyday just like everyone else who watches.

QOTD: I’ve never tried Sauternes and I may not anytime soon even though I would like to. I’m somewhat new to wine and there are so many things to try that I might not get around to anything that expensive for awhile but I look forward to the day when I can do that.

  • QOTD: I’ve only ever tried Sauternes once – just a taste. I can’t remember the producer. But it was great. All hail noble rot!
Wow, I thought no show today. Thanks for having a show :-). I just checked and 674 comments from yesterday’s show. Well, it was on kind of later than usual. Maybe you need another show w/your Dad for another ratings blockbuster :-).

  • Don’t blame you G-Man. If the lurkers get excited, you get excited. “Let’s do a smell?”I was was screaming “a sniffy sniff!”

QOTD: I’ve had a few during special dinners on vacation and they are truly “orgasmic” but due to their QPR I’d rather buy some Dom as in Dominus.

Having some your your “signature” Cardinale tonight with some pasta. Should be interesting.

    Dom

QOTD: I LOVE SAUTERNES! And THANK YOU for doing what you do. Now I’m gonna go make a dang comment on yesterday’s show. 😉

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I love the sweetness and all the fruity flavors of the Sauternes. They rock! Just like you Gary. Sorry you didn’t get your 1000 that you asked for. I think that they will come once the weekend is here. You know how people watch you on the weekends too. Chin-up young man.

QOTD: Always wanted to try a Sauterne but the $$$ kept me away. Seeing how you broke it down is making me rethink this and at least try a half bottle since we are fans of blue cheese. Please keep up what your doing. You are changing the minds of the Ickeroos (look up the word in Cab Calloway’s Jive Dictionary) of the wine world.

    Shout out from North Carolina.
