QOTD: Sauterne and foie gras….think peanut butter and jelly:-)

  • joegz

QOTD: Always wanted to try a Sauterne but the $$$ kept me away. Seeing how you broke it down is making me rethink this and at least try a half bottle since we are fans of blue cheese. Please keep up what your doing. You are changing the minds of the Ickeroos (look up the word in Cab Calloway’s Jive Dictionary) of the wine world.

    Shout out from North Carolina.

QOTD – I like sauternes but it really is always a QPR issue. There are some Sauternes that are close to $200 and for that you can get an Azsu Essencia for shit sakes which will blow most sauternes out of the water…..Tokaji is #1, then Vintage Port, then Sauternes.
    * I have never tried a d’Yquem though so maybe I have not had my eyes opened……

Oh my! I clicked play before checking to see how many comments you got yesterday, and at first I thought maybe you were dying or had for some reason lost the will to live. Where is Gary?! But I understand, it’s frustrating when so many people are on board and you get caught up in the excitement of two years and then it falls through. I agree that you’ll probably get it this weekend though!

As for Sauternes, the only bottle I’ve had was really just too-sweet, sticky junk. I was very disappointed because I had laid down some big bones ($30 for h/bottle) and it just didn’t deliver. (My tasting note for that wine says, “Even though I don’t know what it means, I think this is what all the wine writers are talking about when they use the word ‘cloying’.”) So I had sort of given up on Sauternes until this episode. Thanks.

  • Too bad you didn’t hit 1000.
but, dude, you just tasted nearly $300 worth of Sauternes with some killer Bleu Cheese AND you are only 60 some friends away from 5000 on FB. Cheer Up!

  • Mandy

Today we have a new addition to the WLTV lexicon… the pouty-pout.

Cheer up! You just tried 300 dollars worth of wine while the rest of us at home drooled. That’s pretty good pay back, yes?

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve had any. Yet another assignment for my pal.

Don’t be bummed, GV. Lurkers will be lurkers. The show is awesome. KUTGW (keep up the good work).

  • Elise

Sorry about not getting the 1000 mark. But I did my part! I left a comment!! And just because I love you so much, here’s another one. 🙂

But seriously, Jack is right. Where has Gary gone? Bring him back! We all want his infectious spirit to invade our computer screens again!

QOTD: Don’t know, haven’t tried it yet, but I have tried “ice” wine and wasn’t crazy about it…. However I will have an open mind and try some Sauterne the next chance I get.

  • kaybee

Well, this is terrible. The Feb. weather stinks, everyone is cranky and sick at work and GV is down. We’ll all have to leave 2 or 3 comments to yesterday’s ep to make it up.

    QoTd
No on Sauternes, (kind of pricey) would love to try. Late Harvest Rieslings and Moscato have been our usual.

  • FJDR

Poor Gary. See what you lurkers have done? Sucked the spirit right out of the man. Don’t let them get you down Gary!

QOTD: Never had a Sauternes, in fact I didn’t really know what they were until now.

QOTD: We honeymooned in SFran in summer of 1990, had a glass of 1987 d’Yquem…something like $30 a glass, outrageous…. but loved it, wife loved it… few years later bought 24 halfs of 1990 d’Yquem,,, we now open one each and every July 21st…18 to go.

AFA todays ep…. if people aren’t going to comment, give em’ Sir Gary for a week or two, screw em’ if they don’t want to play…… I’m here for ya bro!

  • Tim Morea

I’ve never had a Sauterne, but it sounds like I’d like it. I’ve only just recently moved on from being part of the CKC, so I’m not sure it’s something I’ll get to try soon (at least not until I get a real job!).

Cheer up, Gary! I didn’t even get a chance to watch yesterday’s episode in time before you were saying you were sad there wasn’t 1000 comments. Didn’t help I’ve been sick like everyone else and their brother…

Anyways…interesting episode. Sauternes is one of those desert wines I still need to try. The price doesn’t help… Someday…

Kinda depressing, seeing you so sad… QOTD: the first time I tried Sauternes it blew me away. It was one of those, wow, moments in wine that show just how much diversity is out there in the world of wine!

    Keep up the great work!

  • winemadness

QOTD: I have never had a sauterne. However, you have definitely peaked my interest. Maybe a half bottle. How long do these wines last after they are opened?? Do you need to keep them in the fridge? Gary, snap out of it. Your usual high energy level really makes the show enjoyable.

Last time I had a Sauterne was many years back. They were OK. I prefer Port of Sherry for a dessert wine.

I watched yesterday, but didn’t leave a comment. My computer was down for several weeks, and I was playing catch-up.

Don’t measure success by the number of comments, or by how everyone responds to your requests. we are a very independent bunch. Be happy about that.

Sweet- way to focus in on an episode about la pourriture noble! And although it sucks that you’re sad, I think it was a good mood to have for this educational ep.

QOTD: Only one, 2005 Chateau Les Tuileries Sauternes. It was all honey, all day long. But I find the QPR difficult so I prefer to drink muscat or port if I’m going for dessert wine.

  • Hey Gar, let’s turn that frown upside down! 🙂

Yeah, I dig Sauternes. I’ve got a d’Yquem, some Suduiraut, Rieussec, and for more everyday occasions, Guiraud, and Haut-Bergeron, Filhot, and a Lamourette. Plus I love other sweet wines (late harvest Rieslings and Zinfandels, and Chenin Blanc (Quarts de Chaume), Yalumba muscat, a Trockenbeerenauslese from Kracher (1/4 size mini bottle), port, tawny ports… Ok, I have a sweet tooth.

Today’s episode reminded me of a tasting of Coteaux du Layon’s about 10 years ago: Was the ’95 as good as or close to the 1990? We never really came to a firm conclusion other than adopting COTEAUX DU LAYON as one of those wines we should seek out when considering a Sauternes. Any chance you could feature these wines on one of your shows? Aslo good with Roquefort!
