    Hey Gary,

Comment ne pas aimer le Sauternes ?! Yumm. Who doesn’t love Sauternes. How I came about to know Sauternes was through my Uncle from France who has posh and distinctive tastes. Sauternes is a bit similar to the Pineau des Charentes. Sauternes can also be taken as a digestive all depending on the occasion. I am glad you did Sauternes, I did not think New Yorkers knew about Sauternes and then again you are the wine specialist, pardon me & originally from Russia. It’s true, Sauternes is expensive but it is ever so yummy. Love the combination with the cheese, might just try it out as well or perhaps a desert, Sauternes is also very good with desert or lemon – lime pie, meringue, yummy stuff. Great show Gary !! 😀

I was too busy checking out the wine values on your site, while following orders to pause yesterday’s show, and to redirect my thoughts toward spending money. There was no time left to leave a comment. Doesn’t ordering the Anniversary Pack make enough of a statement and merit thought? I have no idea what wines will be included in this collection, and yet I have so much faith in you, GV, I purchased it. That should speak volumes!

QOTD: Have never tried Sauternes but would certainly love it if one was included in the Anniversary Pack!

  • Love the show Gary. I just started watching this week. And we also found out that we were pregnant today, so it’s the perfect time to build up my wine collection since I won’t be drinking any. I’m hooked on the show though. Love it.

I do LOVE dessert wines but am not blown away by sauternes, they just donâ??t seem balanced to me, not enough acid. I prefer trockenberenauslese, German ice wine, Kroker anyone??

Tarheel you are right, he should have tasted them in reverse order.

It looked like the Sauterns and cheese cheered you up a bit… Don’t be down.

QOTD: Not a really good one. I’d love to try one of those with a great cheese.

  • Tommy Vernieri

Man, Gary, you’re really excited about games aren’t you… I’d even say giddy.

QOTD: I haven’t had a Sauternes, I did like the 2005 Peter Lehmann Sémillon Botrytis though.

I love Sauternes, though I don’t drink it as much as I’d like to. I was fortunate to be exposed to it during a series of wine seminars I attended years ago when I was in my mid-20s — a D’Yquem, yet :-).

Thanks for the show Gary and on one of my favorites.

QOTD: I love Sauternes. However being fairly new to wines, I made the mistake of opening a bottle of 2003 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey (97 Pts WS) a bit too early. Would have cellared it if I had been a bit more knowledgable at the time. But thank you for your tasting notes. I kept describing that funky taste as hair dye but you’re right it’s a petrolium taste. Thanks again for the show. Tough to stay away sometimes.

Gotta say GV, you are acting a bit like a b*tch about the comments. Suck it up man, you know we love you. Startin’ to think you are just an ego-maniac (sp?)!

  • torquey

The wine czar felt just a tad blue,
That the comments had failed to accrue,
    But Roquefort fits the bill,
    And Sauternes cures an ill,
When naught but botrytis will do!

Who’s a cranky brat… YOU!! haha. Cheer up buddy, your store & shows are rockin’.

  • Dan A

I enjoy Sauternes, and have had it a few times, the oldest one was over 25 years old – very special… But as far as dessert wines go, I prefer a nice riesling or cab franc Niagara icewine

    Cheer up Gary!!!!

    GV, Shake it off man.
Had a Sauternes about a year ago and did not like it. Way to sweet for my palate. That is why I don’t like Port also. Maybe it had something to do with being a cheap Sauternes as I believe I payed around 20-25 for it. Because of that though I would never pay 100 for a sweet wine. An no, I have not yet tried an ice wine.

Ok I get it, you love games. But GV, let’s get real here. It’s no big deal you can’t command 1000 comments. Notice that the Vayniak nation feeds off your energy and passion, and when you do a show like today it just brings down the whole family. No need to pout, you are doing a good job, and you shouldn’t need comments to stay on top of your game. I roll with port as my dessert wine, but will seek some sauternes to see the comparison.

  • QOTD: I’ve had other dessert wine, but not Sauternes, so when I get flush again I’ll give it a try.

I have a question back, which may need to go to the Ask Gary app when I don’t have a 16-day-old in my lap (she really loves the show but makes it hard for me to type!). If the 1990 was so brilliant, what’s to keep the $60.00 2003 from being that good in 2021? Could you tell that?
