  • I hate to say it but the majority of hard ciders I’ve had have been of the cheap-o variety. This is making me crave one, though, as it’s often what I get at bars since I really only like Guiness and am not always in the mood for it. Great episode – cool to get outside the WLTV box!

    Great Show!!!

Hope you are enjoying SXSW….wish I could be there (Im 2hrs away, but midterms are a bitch)

QOTD: Ive tried a few ciders. Mainly those that are served locally in taphouses down here. Out of all that I’ve tried, Strongbow isnt too shabby. Its more like drinking apple juice than an alcoholic beverage, but very defined apples.

    Hey Gary!

Yes I have…Eric Bordelet from France makes cider from 200 year old trees, these are some I have:
    Bordelet Poire Sydre Authentique
    Bordelet Poire Sydre Granit
    Bordelet Sydre Argelette
    Bordelet Sydre Brut Tendre
    Bordelet Sydre Doux

have two from the 2003 vintage. BTW, the food deal is with fennel and pork. Esentially grilled pork loin on an apple and fennel slaw, finish the pork with a glaze of the cider and serve on a hot day!

    BITCHIN…

  • BobbyTiger

Actually, I had a Woodchuck with lunch today. It was the only thing cold in the fridge. Went well with the left-over BBQ. Really don’t drink much cider though, as I find it rather lame. However I do drink a lot of sparkling wines, and the extra dry sounds like something that might be interesting. How you keep coming up with these shows I’ll never know.

My favorite ciders are the batches I brew in my basement every fall. Super dry and sour. Great stuff.

QOTD: Nope, I’d rather expand my palate to those off the wall varietals in Greece or Hungary.

QOTD: I haven’t really had “hard ciders” but i live in england so i get all the “mainstream ciders” in the pubs(bars). like Strongbow, Scrumpy Jack, Olde English, Kopperberg (Pear cider) and the local brewers.

i like ciders, but if i go into a pub i usually would drink a pint of ale instead of a cider, but on occasion i choose to havee one.

Yup, love the hard apple ciders..not as much as wine…but…
Doc’s Draft Framboise is yummy…raspberries are added to the apple cider…light pink color…very fruity… unlike regular apple cider that reminds you of Thanksgiving, this is summer favorite!

QOTD – Yep. Preferred – Blackthorne. Alternate (and far more common in the US) – Hard Core

    Great Episode Gary. Fun times.

QOTD: My wife loves cider. I usually try it. Great stuff with BBQ wings, or ribs. With a spicy grilled dish, these are great. As Gary said, great palette cleaners. MY FAVORITE CIDER: Is an Oregon variety, called WANDERING AENGUS. We actually first had it as Bethel Heights Wineary in the Dundee Hills of Pinot country in Oregon.

Hard Cider used to be America’s prefered drink of choice. The french and english colonies were big drinkers. William Henry Harrison, US Prez in 1840 had a cider campaign and wooed voters with free drinks. True…

GARY, Please do an IPA Episode. I’d love to hear your description of some of these Monster Hoppy IPA beers….

Beloved of the street wino, cider is surely an under rated drink. An extremely pungent and cloudy version known as scrumpy comes on draft in the south west of England. It rots you from the inside and makes your teeth fall out but otheriwse is great.

Nice episode GV…I love hard cider! And Dave Canada, cider and cassis sounds absolutely wonderous! I’ll have to try it sometime.

QOTD: Funny that you did this show. I just bought a Trader Joe’s Brand sparkling apple cider, Newton’s Folly. I used it to cook some pork chops. The cider was good, but nothing compares to hard cider from Normandy in France. Absolutely delicious!
