For a beer that changes every year you should check out (if you haven’t already, and I know it may be a little late for this year) Anchor Brewing’s Christmas Ale. The recipe changes slightly every year, so it ends up turning out similar to wine, with better and worse “vintages” of the beer, it’s good stuff though.

Very interesting show! The Extra Dry sounds really worth trying.

QOTD: I have only had cheap hard cider, the kind that comes in six packs. they are usually kind of harsh, and give me acid reflux

I have had a few ciders from England and France where the best (M.O.) come from. I believe they use MANY varieties and are specific to ciders, and blend. Check Wiki:

Never had it but sounds good and refreshing – at a picnic, outdoor concert, by a pool. I’ll look for it.

I’d be really interested in trying today’s extra dry bottle in the fall. If I were to buy it now, would it last until then?
To go way off topic… I’m enjoying expanding my palate, for the most part. However, I tried a monastrell last weekend and found it abysmal – couldn’t drink the stuff – learned I don’t like the soapy tasting wines…at all. Can’t really afford to waste my money like that, so I’ll probably stick with cabs and cab blends which I’m more likely to appreciate, even when they’re not great. If I were rich, I’d probably take more wine risks. But since I’m not… The way of the world, I guess.

Yes, but I can’t remember the name. It was something fairly similar to what you had, except from Normandy in France. A little pricier too…

    Fun show though!

  • I have always had strong resistance to cider, but I’ve never been able to explain the feeling, apart from saying that it just reminds me too much of apple juice. Not that I’m against apple juice, but for some reason I’m uncomfortable with getting alcohol in that form.

However, in a nearby town (Graton, California) the California Cider Company has a brewpub (the Ace in the Hole) where the emphasis is on cider rather than beer. When I went there to hear a band playing, I tried one of their non-apple ciders — the “Perry” cider, which is made from pears instead. I was skeptical for the first few sips, partly because of the extremely pale color, but it really grew on me as I made my way to the bottom of the pint glass, and I was happy to order another.

I’ve had Woodchuck and Hornsby hard apple cider. I like to mix hard cider with Guinness.

Thanks for trying ciders. I have had a few at recent wine tastings and some taste like acidic wines. I don’t remember the names, but they were fun to drink.

  • QOTD: Bulmers Cider. Drank that all day everyday when I was in Ireland.

I lo-oooove cider. This tasting had me drooling on the keyboard. 🙂 We only get hornsby’s and woodchuck around these parts, but I’ve had others (don’t remember the brand) on tap at a few pubs. This was excellent, thanks. I’ll be sure to check out their website. Good stuff GV!

  • Hey, Gary. I met you today at SxSW. I told you I was from Jersey, too. I have just starting drinking hard ciders and I am really enjoying them. I can’t think of any of the brand names right now, but it’s my kind of drink. Fizzy and sweet. My dad owned a liquor store in my hometown of South River, New Jersey. But it didn’t make me a wine expert. Love your videos. Your personality is so over the top.

QOTD:yes but has been a while and think my palate has much more evolved since then so need to try them again to expand it more. I seen a travel show of Rick Steves about it and some pubs in England won’t carry cider because some have a very high alcohol content ending up in too many fights and such problems.

  • QOTD: I enjoy hard ciders in the summer as a change from beer.

When Teresa and I visited in Ireland a few years ago I emjoyed Bulmers on draught. Great and crisp.

At home I enjoy Magners Vintage. Previously the fav around here was Strongbows yet it is alot tamer than the Irish ones.

I haven’t tried the ciders from Quebec though I hear that they have a sparkling and a icecider available.

    Cheers!!
