lone of the day -‘it’s like the oak monster, but it’s the worm monster’

Tremendous episode, tremendous guest. Watching Gary learning is pure entertainment. This is what WLTV is all about; new experiences and knowledgeable, fun guests. Loved it.

  • QQOTD: YES!!!!!!!

Thank you GV, you had a spirit tasting on the show!!!! Mezcal is AMAZING. I’m in love with Del Maguey. They make 7 different kinds I believe, that vary in their complexity and smokiness. I’m super interested in trying the Sombra now in comparison. Richard is definitely on to something (I could see you were picking up on it as well). I started drinking Mezcal about 5 years ago, and as a bartender, I’ve seen it increase dramatically in popularity. Hey, if you ever want a bartender on the show – don’t hesitate to contact us out here at Baytenders. Also, there’s an AMAZING small, family-owned distillery up on the hill in St. Helena, CA called Charbay. They’re doing ridiculous things with spirits (they do wine too) – You should check them out.

QOTD: The excitement that each day brings unknown opportunities, challenges, and reward. Having a business/job that allows me to interact with people everyday that are equally as passionate. Stunningly beautiful California. And of course, my amazing gf Audrey 🙂

  • NOOOO … you sat on the right in episodes 638 and 637 at Cru as well. Gary come on … not on you A game.

QOTD – business is booming in the web design world

  • Jeff S.

The show started off slow today, but once y’all started tasting… IT WAS ON!

My only problem with the show was the shakey table… Very Distracting!

GV QOTD: I have had Mezcal before, but worm style. It was cool to find out where that smokey flavor was coming from.

QOTD: I get super stoked when Gary drops the F-Bomb during minute 30!

  • QOTD#1: Far too many, I lived in Mexico for 6 years and was subject on a few occasions to some home brews at 100 proof plus! Honestly I’ve never had the pleasant kind, but I certainly have had me plenty of Herradura, Tres Generaciones, Don Julio, the Big Paty, and Presidente. I love sippin’ on a good tequila and now I’ll look for some good mezcals. But I must say I love the cocktails as well.

Paloma: grapefruit soda (like mountain dew or mellow yellow), fresh lime juice, salt (and not a dash, a nice tspn or so, it should taste salty sweet), double shot of tequila, in a liter glass on the rocks

Alka Seltzer: same as above but with club soda instead of the grapefruit soda

    Campechano: top two combined

Banderita: line up three double shot glasses and put fresh lime juice in one (green), tequila in the second (clear or “white”), and vampirito spicy tomatoe apple juice mix (red)… hence “banderita” meaning little flag and in this case the green, white, and red of the mexican flag… you drink them in that order in little sips… the lime juice prepares you palate for the hit of alcohol and the vampirito softens everything up perfectly… Banderitas are awesome!

Stop by McMullen’s Irish Pub or the Groovy Bar if you’re ever in Monterrey, Mexico… my best friend Paco is the owner of both… I had a short stint as minority partner for about 2 years… if you like live music and a great time, then it’s they’re the place to be!

QOTD#2: Knowing that in 1.5 years I’ll finish my Masters degree and start doing what I really like, which IS NOT PUBLIC AFFAIRS (I should have gone to UC Davis!)… the wine industry! Plus my 1 month old and 3 year old nieces are amazing!… and well living in Paris and traveling the vineyards of Europe doesn’t hurt!

Woo hoo! Not being a big spirits drinker, I acknowledge my ignorance about the subject. However, being a part-time cigar smoker, I wonder what this smokey business in the Mezcal is about.

Quick pointer: This is not your first time on the right Gary. You were on the right of your guest at CRU.

QOTD: There is no single source for my optimism. Beauty in all its shapes and forms bring joy into my life, be it beverages (mainly wine), literature, music, nature, etc. Love of life is the ultimate optimism. The beauty of discovery and its drive: curiosity. Our ability to face challenges and overcome obstacles, small victories reap great rewards.

    Peace and love!

Very cool show! I enjoyed the inter-play and information. I would definitely try this, just for the “Buzz Factor”! Good name for a mixed drink too!(“Thats mine”..LOL!) Where is this served or available? Mott, link it up! LOL

Gray’s QOTD: yes…with the worm in the bottle! Metaxa, I think?

Richard”s QOTD: I thank God, DAILY, for my health, for my wife & for my kids, and I ask for His blessing for us all during the next 24 hours. Then I focus on being the best I can be …simply as a person. I’ve done this for over twenty years…life is wonderful! I’m TRULY blessed!
(Watching WLTV everyday doesn’t hurt either!…Gary’s passion, enthusiasm and sincerity are contagious)! Good luck with this years harvest…looking forward to the video!

Its cool that Mott has been in that last couple of episodes. Keep it up Mott, but you got to quit smoking. Whats up with the guest no knowing what the QTOD is.

again, good chemistry with the guest. i must admit how impressed i am that you managed to make a half hour episode about a relative of tequila interesting and without much lag time…..

qQOTD: yes, i have had a mezcal.

QOTD: optimism is for idealists. it has no place in my life.

QOTD from Gary- I have only had the cheap stuff, and it hurt, bad. Never tried the premium, but may look for a bottle in the future.
Real QOTD- Watching guys like you and Gary with the energy to tackle and succeed in various ventures. The passion and work ethic gives me faith in the future.

GVQotD – Yes, but not the newer ultra premiums. And just as with Tequilas and Cachaca, I’m confident that Richard’s fine product has little to do with the rather mediocre quality of the industrial brands that saturate the market.

QotD – Years ago, the wisdom of an elderly man found me, when he answered my “Good day” greeting by saying “Young man, any day I wake up is a good day.” I felt for him, and admired the wisdom that we may be so fortunate to acrue as we age. I find optimism in love of my parents and family, my GF, my daughter, and now her daughter, as well as friends, work, relatively good health, and elsewhere. It’s all around me.

  • Nina

QOTD#1: I have read up on it but never had it…now I need to.

QOTD#2: It’s actually innate behavior for me. It bothers most others…for example, think of It’s a Small World ride…I enjoy it and sing along with a smile on my face. Others would like to side-swipe me with the icelandic skater animatronic. …Or maybe it’s all the wine that does it.

    Great show!!!

fake QOTD: No but would love to as I love tequila.

real QOTD: This question is actually quite profound given the current financial climate. The acquisition of material goods is not the answer. Just look around…its gone. GV says it at least 3 times a week: family and friends. Everything else will take care of itself. I would also add that it is important to get some quiet time to yourself to meditate or just read the paper every day.

    Gary and Richard!
The night Richard completely rocked my world and made me a wine nut a few years back was the first time I heard of mezcal. I was at the Little Nell with my friends, Simon and Jackie, and Richard’s wife and then very young daughter, who slept most of the night in the big corner booth. After Richard stunned us with bottle after bottle of wine – champagne, chablis, pinot, grenache, syrah, and God only remembers what else (mostly drunk by Simon & I) – Richard saunters back to see if we’re ready for mezcal shots with him as a “digestif”. I explained the only way it would help with my digestion would be by making me vomit up the 2+ liters of wine I was absorbing into my blood stream, but took tequilla and mezcal seriously ever since. Not to mention started working in the wine world, and continue to pursue my dream with much appreciation to the both of you. I’m really looking forward to trying Richard’s mezcal, and would love to catch up sometime, especially since I’m now in Sonoma (so if you could forward my email to him, I’d be much obliged). Its great people and exciting opportunities that keep me going, keep me positive, and I’ve been lucky to find a lot of them over the past couple years working in the wine world. Hopefully they will keep coming for us all.
    Best,
    Harry

Very interesting show. I would love to be involved in the process of making that product. Am I that desensitized that I didn’t even notice the f-monster?

If people stopped watching WLTV because Gary has never smoked anything, that would be even worse than if someone stopped watching because he had.

QQOTD: Yes if you consider all Tequila Mezcal, otherwise no.

QOTD: I love my wife, but optimism first comes from within one’s own soul.

    GVQOTD: Yep.

RBQOTD: Being in college and learning. If I have the chance to learn something new, I’m set for optimism.

Gary, I believe in France it’s a kind of gentleman’s hand shake rule that if you use old vines on your label , that the vines are at least 30 years old.

  • I love the animal carvings from Oaxaca. The people who carve them are master sculptors, and they work at light speed. Amazing! I would have put an image of one on the label if I were Richard. What is up with these guest who are repeaters, forum posters and avid watchers who get blind sided by the QOTD? 😉

    Gary’s QOTD: No.
QOTD: My optimism stems from my gullible nature.
