line of the day – ‘ I would like to have pig snout and ears with this wine’

Love Gary in this episode; he rolled with the negative feedback of the ‘College humor’ episode beautifully. As he says, you have to try different things, some will work, some won’t. Glad to see that he isn’t going to dwell on it at all. Back to his incisive, funny, super ‘on point’ self. Picking the ‘Suxx’ wine a masterstroke.

    Hey Gary,

    Good show !

QOTD: I think it s shame that the vayniacs expect so much from your shows. Amir was right in his comment, you tried something a little different and it didnt work out as you thought. you ve just posted your 650th episode, that is amazing ! The more quality you bring, the more the vayniacs expect from you. If I was going to post 650 shows, I don t think a single one would best as good as your “worst show”. You are the man Gary ! I ve learnt more about wine with WLTV than I have with books! (and I have tons o’ books).

More importantly, I ve learnt NOT to be a wine snob and make fun of people who don t know about it, or people that say things like “it tastes like alcohol” or “it tastes like grapes”. People like Jake and Amir have little or no experience of wine, I think it s great that you introduce them to it. It teaches us how we can get our “non-wine-geek” friends into it too !

    Kudos Gary, kudos !

Good for you Gary. Don’t worry, one bad show out of every 100 is a great average. I’ve learned so much from you over the past 2 years. Thank you for EVERYTHING you do. I truly appreciate the time and energy you put into the show. This is my 20 minutes of relaxation after a hard days work. It’s my time to unwind and enjoy something I love. Thundercruise countdown baby!!!! I’m doing my liver exercises as we speak in preparation for a week of sun, food and heavenly intoxication.

You musta done that last night because it’s still sunny in my Cali.
GREAT SHOW. I didn’t really like the ch show but it did expand my pallet a bit. I had to watch it again after reading the BeavisnButthead comments and figuring they were trying to be in Character. Can I move on now. Maybe.
Thanks for bringing the THUNDER ON THE ROAD!

    Enjoyed the format–wine travel/shop/hotel room.

Is my computer screen acting up or was the hotel tv on in the room? You kept changing to different shades of blue and grey. Thought I was watching a Jim Jarmeusch film.

    More Verdeho, please!

Nice show Gary – great to be able to hear from you when you are out and about.

So what do you do now with 3 open bottles of wine? Go down to the lobby and make some friends 🙂

  • I love these impromptu shows – mixes it up a little bit. Gary, you should go out and be a wine consumer more often!

great show gary – I wouldn’t say ‘return to form’ because yesterday’s show was not really your fault. and hey, i understand people are passionate about your show, but to turn out free content of this quality people should just be happy you’re still doing this. I definitely am.
I’m obviously an Aussie guy and can’t say i’ve come across the suxx. to me it seems like that atypical ‘aussie’ wine which would make me steer clear of it. I hate the stereotyping our country’s wine gets – i think in part we seem to export in a concentrated manner these fruit bombs. maybe some of the more interesting and diverse wines we make never make it to your shores. not sure.
have you ever reviewed tasmanian wines on your show? great pinot, chard, and an intersting riesling style. more controlled and less reliant on the fruit of the south australian wines. obviously to do with the climate (tasmania very cool climate)
anyway, you should check them out if you haven’t. – 05 being the best vintage in the last 6-7 years – producers to check out: Bay of Fires, Tamar Ridge, Stefano Lubiana, Jansz (very good sparkling producers), Clover Hill (ditto), Dalrymple to name a few.

    great show! keep em coming!

I liked yesterdays show..2 new evolving wine drinkers…what would one expect heck we all began with bartles and james or worse…anyway thanks guys for coming to play!

This show…great job! new wines and I appreciate the changing palateaspect of your feedback. Mine is on a constantly evolving path…thanks gary v you’re the man!!

  • Love the show! Great display of how your palette changes as you probably wouldn’t have enjoyed the Molly Dooker or the Suxx as much as you might have in prior years. I know you didn’t have a QOTD but i have a Jets question for you. We know the defense is getting Jacked up and let’s face it, is going to be Legit this season (injuries pending) but who’s going to play QB for Gang Green. Heard Jeff George is coming out of retirement? How bout Jeff Garcia?

  • Gary,

I wanted to say first that I enjoyed yesterdays show. (I said this yesterday, but I wanted to toss it out there again) Yeah, it wasn’t down to business for the whole show, but I got some laughs out of it and some knowledge so it was a complete success for me. Keep rocking your style and trying new things. That’s how we learn after all right?

My comment: I’ve been watching now regularly for around a month. I was thinking today was I was drinking wine, eating my dinner, and watching the show how awesome it would be to taste the same wines as you during a show. Have you ever let your viewers know ahead of time what wines you’ll be tasting so they can join in on the fun, the experience, and the nuances you describe in a wine? Just a thought as someone who knows a lot about beer, but is trying to open up his mind to wines.

    Cheers!

Gary, I loved to see you come out of your shell and appreciate a different style of wine than your normal liking. I dig your palate but I dig it more that you are open to let it evolve. Wine drinkers needed to hear that. Good show but I may never use an ice bucket in a hotel room without a liner again.

Gary, Its nice too see you back on top of your game..I enjoyed this show very much and you once again brought the thunder. Bring back some more white burgs especially the 2007 vintages which hit the market recently and have shown big time acidity which we both LOVE!!!!!!….

  • No worries on yesterday Gary. It’s yesterday. Natural to think those guys would be hilarious, but not as funny in natural setting like you are.

You crushed it again today. Love the on the road shows.

    Almost baby time !!

Last time I was in LA…I FOUND JESUS!
He was in my trunk when I got back from Tijuana.
    But really Gary,
Good show. How about some wines from Santa Barbara and Paso Robles?

  • I have not left a comment in awhile but thought I would take this chance to say I’m still watching and still loving the content. Look forward to meeting you on the cruise 🙂

  • Hey!

    Nice quality, solid show –

one man, one camera, a couple of wines = magic

    Thanks a’bundle from Denmark

(P.S. Question – If you read this out > have you ever tried either Romaneé Conti Vosne Romaneé, La Tâche or Richebourg? I’ve never even seen one in real life, but they are still my dream wines, which I hope to one day taste – what are your thoughts on these wine(-GODS?)?)

  • Ryan D

Some weird stuff with the lighting today. Kind of flickered on and off, with a purplish tint to it. I love that you are doing shows from the road with interesting people, or at the least interesting wine. I am in the minority, I didn’t hate the show yesterday. It’s just hard with people who have no experience whatsoever. I can tell they were trying to be funny, but the gags did fall a bit flat when done on the fly like that. *shrug* The basketball thing was gutbuster hilarious though. I understand why you would want to do a show with CollegeHumor, it helps both parties out, and there’s not much else to say about it. Also, I couldn’t really see the bottles today when you held them up, maybe some linked pictures would show that better.

Being fair, you haven’t quite done the bang out a show 5 days a week thing for a few weeks now. There were only three last week, when I was on spring break. I don’t mind so much when they are short, even though I like longer ones better. But having something every day is important to me, it gives me something to unwind with when my day is done. And bring back the laid-back Fridays! I’ve missed the couch episodes. Maybe you could do the blind tastings you talked so much about on Fridays? If others are like me, they do their tastings during weekends, and having a recent blind tasting available to watch beforehand can help brush up on tasting technique.

Long winded, but I haven’t left a comment in some time now.

  • Do the Madeira show!!!! It’s my native island on my Mom’s side and I have always wanted to visit. I think fortified wines get way too little press.

How about a Port show as well? New World vs Old World? If you want the best CA port, Gary Miller’s Miller Wineworks Teodoro port is as close to Taylor or Fonseca (granted probably closer to a Taylor LBV from a good year, but unable to equal to the intensity of a great vintage year like 1963 or 1977)as you can find, and he is a nice guy (former chef turned winemaker) with a sweet wife and a cute golden retriever winery dog.

No commercial relationship, I just had the pleasure of meeting them in Napa a few years ago and joining their mailing list.

Good show Gary. I have to say I am one of the crazy people who enjoyed the guys from college humor. I wouldn’t say that it was your best show, but I really didn’t think it sucked. Really good stuff man. You should have Kevin back by the way, I really think he was one of your better guests.

Gary, Definitely liked the format of this episode! Great idea for when you’re not at home in the dirty Jerz. I agree with what you said about about white having the ability to be just as great as reds. Once that hurdle is jumped, you’ve got to try to extend that to rosés!

I’ll also add I think sometime SOON you should do an episode on wines made from American grapes such as Catawba, Concord, Niagara, etc… I don’t believe it’s been done yet!

  • Tommy Vulgar

I didn’t have such a problem with the last episode, those guys are funny & quirky. Did it work out as awesome as intended? Maybe not… but it’s always good to see you mix it up with the guests.

But man, todays episode? Wow… way to reel it back in and hit on out of the park! I love the up close & personal, impromptu format. It’s definitely fun to see you put on your “wine consumer” hat and to see you go through what many of us do, going blind into a new shop to pick something up.

+1 on setting the camera down. the handheld episode in your kitchen made me a tad dizzy.
+2 for accidently turning the camera off.. that was just funny! 😉

I enjoyed the show. I was totally expecting you to give bad scores to the Mollydooker and the shiraz, so it goes to show that you can’t always judge a wine by the fact it is new world, has a quirky name or a quirky label. These shows on location keep it fresh.

  • Dan

I would imagine that because yesterday’s show failed it will become one of the most popular shows to watch – there is something captivating about watching a train wreck.

I didn’t watch the show yesterday but I’m going to watch it now.

You put out so much great content sometimes it’s fun to watch it not go so well.

Rock and roll Gary. Say hi to coronado for me – it’s the island just across the bay from San Diego, and my hometown.
    Cheers

Show didn’t suxx. Good 1, GV.

I loved the past vintage of The Violinist and all of the 20(ish) bones wines. Would love to try Suxx. You described the Ringland wines to a T. Big, playful, alcohol loaded fruit bombs. I’ll always pick up a wine from The Grateful Palate…they are just FUN wines.

Excited to visit the WineLib in July, going to squeeze it in while waiting for connecting flights to Maine!
