Great episode; most notable for the worst wine story ever (told by Bryce) and a blossoming bromance between the old and the new. Well worth watching

Great guest– A close match to my favorite guest , Daniel Schuster. Both men have a history in the vineyards, and talk abour the interactions between land, weather, and man in the final production of wine. A funny comparison is Schuster says man has the least influence, while Jones says man has the greatest influence. I respect both opinions, because they both are farmers and great wine producers. The men that have had dirt under their fingernails make the best guests. Bring on more!

QOTD– 1983, my first small apartment, new jersey, friends from hawaii, 1974 Heitz Martha Vineyards (2 bottles), Filet Mignon, lobster & crabs over a newspaper table clothe, and Stella’s silver queen corn. A party that every attendee still remembers today, 26 years later. That was the best, wine food and friends!

Wow, great episode and wonderful guest. Brice is quite the character, with a ton of background and good story-telling to relate. The “wine-making stool” is a way of thinking about wine that is going to be with me for awhile. Worth the whole episode just for that, and there were plenty of other good stories and moments. Brice ranks right up there with Sasha as an all-time great guest. And the Wine Queen, but for different reasons. 😉

QOTD: Best bottle I ever had was actually only a half-bottle of Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Reisling (can’t recall the vintage. It was just my wife and I. We hadn’t treated ourselves to a night out since we first had kids, and finally, after something like seven years without a real respite, we decided we were going to go out for a real night on the town just for us again. We had waited so long, and planned so far ahead, the anticipation made it scary. But she is my wife for a very good reason, and everything was absolutely perfect. The Horrocks was the capper of the restaurant portion of the evening, and the flavors just continued to linger on.

Best bottle: Long ago when the Mark = $ .25, had our aniversary dinner at The Tennis Club on the park in Bad Homberg, Germany. A bottle of a great Riesling with lobster followed by poached pears with rum sauce & chocolate. Still married and having a bottle of ’82 Margaux this week for our 50th. JCC

  • That was one of the most beautiful video I’ve seen. Brice reminds me of my dad / grandfather… is farmer-like humility and charm. The most touching part of the video was his “tear” for missing his father. And the most powerful moment in all the videos I’ve seen was that humble, quiet thanks you at the end of the video.

Been watching the show for a little while now trying to gain some more knowledge about wine and the wine world, and this was one of the more pleasurable episodes so far. Thanks for inviting such a storied guest to your show. It brings a nice different perspective. It’s also nice to see you alongside someone whom you admire/respect. Good chemistry. Well done.

  • from a french point of view Brice is the perfect wine guy 🙂 humble full of charm and well balanced this man is very close to perfection !
Qotd : was sipping a very old banuyls made with grenache after a very tough day in a winery close to limoux in the open air at midnight

  • Love the backstory on how Brice got into the industry, and that he was prepared for the QOTD unlike lots of the posers guests that have been on before.

Gary this is by far one of the best episodes with the merging of “nerdy” information and business you’ve had in a very long time, and one of the better guest episodes in a while too.

QOTD: Brice, thank you for your question, because it inspired me to do something I haven’t done in a while…. What I’ve been doing for a while is something I learned from my aunt and that is to keep the cork from memorable dinners/bottles and write on the cork the date, the people you’re with, and location and each one is a time capsule that brings back that meal and company.

The one that probably has the most significance in the last several years was on 8/19/06 when we had a bottle from Estancia Winery (I only know it was a red because of the cork stain that remains); however it was the “Farewell Dinner” my Grandmother took us out for as a family before my brother moved to Las Vegas two days later. Since that date we’re fortunate to get the whole family together about once a year with the siblings being scattered.

Wonderful guest. I enjoyed his stories of the old days. I don’t have a particular story of the best wine I have had. But, I agree that if you are having a good time, a good meal or are with certain people, whatever wine you are drinking seems good.

Here is the story around my most memorable bottle of wine

Decided to surprise my wife of many years with an exceptional anniversary gift. You have to know that she usually expects me to forget the date. But not this time A WEEK IN PARIS with a dinner date at the Tour d’Argent.

The ingredients for this dinner where a heightened anticipation, the love of my life, superb food, exquisite service and a bottle of ’61 Chateau Clinet. For desert we enjoyed a tour of the famous wine cellar below the restaurant including the chamber that was walled off during the war to protect the real treasures from those pesky germans.

It was during this night that I discovered my passion for the hospitality business and decided to embark on this adventure of becoming a sommelier. Even though there where Foie Gras, salade Saint-Jacques, truffes, tournelles, cote de veau and other eclectic choices from the menu along with the view of the Ile de la Cite and the Seine river, it was the superbly choreographed service around the food and the bottle of Clinet that elevated the occasion from the memorable to the unforgettable. As the sommelier was pouring the last drops of our impeccably decanted bottle of wine, I noted with sadness that now, at the end of the bottle the wine really had reached its peak, to which he answered with the compassion of a fellow wine aficionado: “Ah monsieur, il est toujours comme ça.”

That night really impressed upon me the importance to try my best every time I’m out on the floor to look for that opportunity to impart that little extra attention or detail to our guests so they too will have an unforgettable evening

    great episode
    great guest
    great question

The first of my birthdays when I was given by my parents a gift certificate to a nice restaurant at which I would not normally have eaten at that time, I had a wine that they had marked down because they had only one bottle left. I do not even remember what the wine was, but I remember the wine buyer’s excitement when he came over to ask how we (my girlfriend and I) were enjoying it and to say (I think honestly) how much he liked that wine and that he had been debating taking it home for himself. I had never been to such a fine dining establishment on a date like that before, and trying a wine that was so unfamiliar (I know it was something obscure) at a relatively good price (they cut their prices in half for the wines on that separate list) with that interaction with the wine buyer made it extra special. The whole night felt magical.

  • Great episode. Brice was very captivating. Good storyteller.

QOTD: Excellent question because for some it may be Paul Masson Chablis, depending on the situation.

For me, however it was a 1997 Rubicon Estate (Neibaum-Coppola) CASK Cabernet Sauvignon. I had it at Etoile Restaurant in Napa Valley watching the sunset with my fiancee. Everything was perfect and made the wine that much better.

Could be one of my favorite guests on WLTV.
I really enjoyed the dialog, the down to earth nature of brice, and the emotion he expressed when speaking about his dad was genuine.

QOTD – It was my 15th Wedding Anniversary at a restaurant named Louisiana Purchase in the mountains of western Carolina. My wife and I had a great time and we ordered a bottle of 1988 Chateau Cheval Blanc, our anniversary year. The waiter was a younger kid and he was extremely nervous opening such an expensive bottle of wine. We told him to chill out because it is only wine.
We throughly enjoyed the bottle of wine, our dinner, and the owner let us tour the wine cellar and we purchased several bottles of wine from him.

That was fun to watch – from a business, wine, and good storyteller perspective.

QOTD – There have been countless wine’s that I have shared with family and friends (often in special places) that could contend for ‘best wine’ – I can’t single out just one. But, the first wine I remember liking was back in 2001. In HA 430 Introduction to Wines at Cornell we tasted a Widmer Lake Niagra “Niagra White’ – it was really basic, but it was the first wine tasted in the course. Sitting there with 800 other students, I was excited to try more, and to learn more about wines. I haven’t stopped since then…

  • This is a giant in the wine business – experienced, talkative, he’s it!

QOTD: Cab Sauv in Virginia, sitting on a porch over looking the mountains after a long mountain biking trip with my wife. Just me and her on this rental cabin porch… sipping and watching the clouds go by as the sun set to the right of us. Although the Côte de Beaune on the porch of a villa overlooking the Riviera this past May with my wife, was a close 2nd.

  • Gary, this is what wine is all about for some of us – not wealthy of “If you want to make a small fortune in the wine industry, start with a large one” fame, but an average guy with stick-to-it-ness. Great storytelling is at the heart of what brings us back to WineLibrarytv. I hope you can find more guests like this for the future.

As I alluded on FB, I’ve got tickets to see ya in NY now, and Oct. is just around the corner. I hope you talk about Crushing it! a bit during the tastings.

    Cheers, Bro.

  • Great show Gary and Brice. I love Brice’s reaction to the “cherry jerky” taste appraisal.
    QOTD:
My best bottle of wine was a sparkling wine bought in a corner store in Paris on the 14th of July, Bastille Day. I drank it out of paper cups with 5 of my best friends from all over the world on the steps of the Sacre Couer, while watching the fireworks light up the city below us. It is one of my most precious memories.
