line of the day – ‘Can you believe I’ve been doing this for 3 and a half years?’

Hot summer in the city. A passionate GV slightly nerds it up with an expensive wine from one of his favourite regions.

Thanks for the Rhone plug – I work for a winery in AZ that makes many Rhone varietals. Your advice about buying older/ready to drink wines at the same price point as new wines that may need 10+ years to age is great for us old folks!

QOTD: Spent the 95-degree day bottling 1000+ cases of wine in a trailer with insufficient air conditioning => come back to AZ & review our wine so we can get some real cooling :).

Gary: Love to see you relaxed at home with a great bottle of wine. Haven’t tried a Hermitage, but will on my next trip my local wine haunt.

QOTD: Hide like a lil’ girl in my 68 degree air conditioned house!

    Gary,
It was humbling for me that you did a EP based on that wine. Thank you for the description. That’s all I have to say.

Reading through the comments, I see people saying that they simply “would not pay 130 for 91+ points”. Though I appreciate the sentiment about wallet sting, it misses the point that there really is nothing in the world like drinking an aged Hermitage or Cote Rotie. They are extraordinary wines, full of character, and from the Rhone giants like Guigal, Chapoutier, Jaboulet and J.L. Chave, they generally age extremely well. I was hoping you would say something about the 2007 vintage in comparison to 1990. For collectors, buying the ’07s now, one can still get some excellent values and they will only go up in price. I also remember the 2003 Guigal Hermitage you tasted a few hundred episodes ago that simply floored you, which was only $50/btl.

    Thanks again Gary,

    -CK

QOTD: On a work day, a tall glass of Ice Tea. On a day off, a crisp, friuty dry Riesling or other lovely white wine that isn’t Chardonnay.

VERY excited that you’re coming to the SF Bay Area in October. Can’t Wait!
Please let me know if you need any help and I’ll see what I can do.
Maybe a side trip to the Anderson Valley??? : )

95 degrees in Arizona is a cool fall day. Head to the park and maybe even bring a sweater, in case we get cold 😉

Big ups on the Rhone shout out. Huge fan of Rhone wines. I agree ENOUGH already with the HUGE Cali Cabs! Fans of those wines need to broaden their horizons. They are missing out on a huge world of wine. Variety is the spicwe of life & i ain’t just talking women here!
