lines of the day – ‘I’m not Sherlock Holmes or Columbo but I would say that there’s Syrah in this wine’ and ‘what happens when you get immigrant mentality…you win’

Great show, GV’s imagination and finely tuned nose and palate continue to amaze. He picks up a corked wine on the tail end of a quick sniffy sniff. Phenomenal

QOTD–I was a top 40 radio DJ from 1986 to 1999, so I played all the Madonna hits over and over and over and over. I’m sick of all of them.

But, I still get a smile when I hear “Into The Groove” or “Burnin’ Up”.

I don’t like Madonna so I have no favorite song of hers. Your experience here has been mine. I have had more fakey over the top wines from Argentina than anywhere. A few good Malbecs don’t excuse so much of the garbage they seem to be shipping out. The one other Pinot Noir I had from Argentina tasted like it had been laced with Cabernet Sauvingnon and did not at all taste like Pinot. The Argentines need to get their act together. Even the Catena that is arguably the best producer in Argentina has had some real foul tasting dog wines. So I wasn’t surprised by the experience you showed today.

  • Oh man, corked wine or should I say “cork’d”, wink wink… You haven’t read comments in a while and there have been so many great contributions by the Vayniacs these past few weeks.

QOTD: I have three.- Lucky Star, Vogue and Rain.

I know what you mean about that fake, shop-made rather than vineyard-made chemistry set style, with no sense of place, or even sense that wine is, first and foremost, an agricultural product. I’ve only been drinking wine for a couple of years, but I have a very clear preference for authenticity, and I can tell when it’s there, and I can tell when it’s not. I’ve also had Pinots that didn’t taste like Pinots and Malbecs that didn’t seem to have grown out of the dirt. Glad to see you fighting that fight.

The possibility of corked bottles is why it makes sense to have two ‘sniffy sniffs’. Initially nose the wine without swirling as a vigorous swirl can blow off the corked ‘wet cardboard’ sensation.

Also, the smell of a defrosted refrigerator gives the same smell as corked wine. Same micro-bacteria with TCA as its waste product…nasty!

QOTD: I can not stand Madonna.

Bummer of a show today- thank goodness these wines aren’t representative of Argentine wines in general!
QOTD: hmm, probably ‘Papa Don’t Preach’.

Bummer. But your show has pretty much summed up my (limited) exposure to Argentinian wines.

Have never had an Argentinean wine. Will likely pass on these as first impressions do mean a lot!

QOTD: Hands down “This Used to by My Playground” from A League of Their Own.
