Bummer about the last wine, you should taste a different bottle of it tomorrow. Or how about a Cab Franc tasting, I think it’s been awhile since the CF made an appearance. With Turkey Day right around the corner, it’s also time for the annual Beau Nouv bashing. I think you skipped it last year, but the CKC’s are going to be looking for value this time of year, so maybe throw them a bone 😉

Who is Madonna?

I thought the Luigi Bosca Reserve Malbec was pretty awesome. The Pinot sounds interesting, even though I’m also a little wary of the dark purple 24.5% syrah versions. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen a blind tasting. I wanna see some brown paper bags.

GV Thanks for being honest about the corked wine. In fact, I think it’s good that you didn’t just go ahead and open another bottle, and ‘rinse’ the problem away. Earlier this year I had a Dead Arm followed by a Numanthia, both with great scores and both were corked beyond recognition! The failure rate is just too high; whether you consider it a luxury item or a simple beverage what other product is allowed to get away with having such a large percentage of failure??

Not really a bad show, as they’re never bad, but definitely bad wines. I’m wary of pinots I can’t see through as well. Have not had many malbecs, so I was excited for the wines to be good, but I guess not this time. You should maybe do another Argentinian show, as this must be a fluke (and another merlot show again too!)

I have enjoyed several Malbec’s from Argentina, Pascual Toso, Donna Paolo. Solid, nothing earthshaking just good solid wines.

QOTD – None, zip, zero, do not care for her at all.

You were pretty excited about that last bottle. Hopefully you will taste that one and it will not dissapoint.

Today’s show…well, a few bad days make the good ones so much better.

Jay Miller is a hack at best and a fraud at worst. His ratings mean nothing–look at your 88 today and his infamous 96 points on the 2005 Sierra Carche from Jumilla. He is ruining the little that’s left of RP’s name.

You’re right Gary, the show sucked, but I liked it anyway. QOTD: Probably “Borderline” or whatever it was called. I remember it was before she became a whore.

Need another Malbec show. Too many good ones to leave on a bad vibe.

Favorite Madonna song is Beautiful Stranger. I am also getting very bored with Malbec from Argentina.

QOTD: For the title, you have to go with Like A Virgin, but for a true fav song, probably Crazy for You, mainly cuz it was a sweet slow song to dance with the ladies.

Anyway, weird to see your reaction to the cork’d bottle. Makes me want to pay more attention in restaurants. Too bad we didn’t get a real review from you on that one. I hear RP scored the Catena cab 98.

Never been real high on Malbec. The several I’ve had have not been all that great.

QOTD: Remember, from the “With Honors” sound track. Danced with very special girl to at my senior prom.

“Wet cardboard” seems like a classic descriptor of oxidized wine/beer. Is oxidized character similar to “corked” character? I often associate corked character with that of Brettanomyces Lambicus, such as baryard “funkiness.”

Great show because it reflects reality. I think I would love to try all 3 wines just to learn about what you don’t like Gary. I agree with you that corked wines are either much rarer than what all the experts claim or I am just not that sensitive to TCA. I have clearly recognized corked wines only twice, both in whites, I suspect they were badly corked. The best book on the whole wine closure debate is George M. Taber’s :To Cork or Not to Cork, a great read and no clear conclusions are actually reached. Which brings up the question, why not have a backup bottle on hand? I’ve heard you mention that you have the reds open for 4 hours. How much does just opening a bottle and not decanting really do? I mean scientifically there can’t be much exposure to air in the little neck of a bottle with a full bottle.
QOTD: Holiday. It always makes me feel happy, some weird grade 8 memory or something. I’ll go out there and admit I love her older stuff. Joel

Why you don´t open another Catena Zapata? Corked wines happens very often. When I worked in the restaurant I used to snippy sniff (!) the wine and changed if corked.
