lines of the day – ‘I’m not Sherlock Holmes or Columbo but I would say that there’s Syrah in this wine’ and ‘what happens when you get immigrant mentality…you win’

Great show, GV’s imagination and finely tuned nose and palate continue to amaze. He picks up a corked wine on the tail end of a quick sniffy sniff. Phenomenal

  • Gary let me know when you came to Argentina.!!
Why you don´t open another Catena Zapata? Corked wines happens very often. When I worked in the restaurant I used to snippy sniff (!) the wine and changed if corked.
    QOTD: I deserve it

That outcome sucked. CKC’s like myself are always excited about Chile and Argentina shows because the price point is there. Come to think of it, I cant remember the last good show for Chile or Argentina.

Dont know Madonna well, but Dont Cry for me Argentina has a nice sound to it.

  • Sigh… almost every time you do a show on Argentina and I see the bottles on your table before the show starts I cringe at the selection (save for a few exceptions, like today’s Catena). Of course there is a lot of crap, but there is also such a ridiculously large amount of great wine coming out of there, that shows like today’s clearly do not reflect the entire reality of wine from a given region. Not to mention the comments I read about people who have never tried an Arg wine and say things like “ill stay away from it then!” after seeing this show… too bad.

QOTD – I love Madonna, but she sucked in the role of Evita

Tough show Gary! But sometimes having wines you *don’t* like and learning which ones to stay away from can be as informative as learning which ones to search out. I agree with those who think you should retry the Catena since it is supposed to be one of the best from Argentina. And speaking of South American wines, why don’t you do a show with Bordeaux-owned/interest wines? Wines like Caro (Lafitte), Cheval de Andes (Cheval Blanc), etc., might be really interesting to try against one another. The price points are great considering what their true Bordeaux counterparts go for!

QOTD: Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever read so many negative comments! C’mon people, we’re just asking about songs! Seems like people need to take a chill pill (or fifty)!
“Live to Tell” would be #1.

Good show, lousy (or damaged) wine. Too bad. You gave it a shot. What else can you do?

QOTD: Like a Virgin, but not because it is a great song. It was played practically every night while I was flippling burgers in college, and we used to sing “variant” lyrics to it at the top of our lungs just before quittin’ time at midnight. Then it was parodied by Weird Al, which just added to the fun. Brings back fun memories.

    Hey Gary,

So here I am craving for a red wine episode and we all get totally bunk-a-fied !!!! A pinot that?s half male half female, a grade 6 grape juice project, and the good old corkarella to finish things off. GV hopefully the next show will bring some serious, monstrous thunder and lighting action because I feel ?like a virgin? to answer the QOTD!

Very Clever Tourquey, Lady Madonna, thats great.

Favorite Madonna song was Justify My Love. It wasn’t her usual pandering to the Top 40, and seemed somewhat personal.

Too bad about the Malbecs, I found most South American wines a hair off. They are good values to be sure but for what they have in consistent good quality and value, they lack in transcendency.

For the money, Clos De Los Siete is very nice from Argentina, but by all means double decant it and let it breathe for a couple hours.

Wow GV, what a disappointing show for Argentina!

This is starting to look like a curse! Every time you are excited about a region, something ruins the show. One muscular Pinot, one fake malbec and an unbelievable Catena Alta corked!!! Only Portugal seems to be getting away.

I REALLY hope you re-taste this Catena Alta Malbec 2006 soon, as it is a wine available down here and I was about to make the investment…

    QOTD: Take a Bow.

    Best wishes,
