  • Where's Part 3?

  • theDude

GV I'm very impressed to see you so active with the posts! I gave you some crap recently for dissing the lurkers and then questioning how much you were “walking the talk”. Thanks for proving me wrong. You're a cool Dude! (and I've rarely if ever seen you not be honest with the guests and I don't see you starting with these guys!)

  • Allan

    LOL!!!!

  • Allan

    Gimme a break!

  • scH

FIRST… comment for me that is.

Good show, I love the back and forth with guests much more than just dry wine analysis.

    QOTD: Still looking for someone…
QOTD2: If you're ever in Des Moines you have to check out Big Tomato. It's a great wine pizza because you can get nearly any toppings on your pie.
    QOTD3: Bottle and boxer briefs

  • theDude

Got it! The pic is so small on my old laptop I couldn't tell. Don rocks! He's one of my favorite Letterman guests. He always gives Dave hell and its great.

I've been a “lurker” as GV so fondly refers to us but I think I'll join the fun!

  • NY Pete

    ok … where's episode 831?

  • Braden G

Holy Crap – someone get this Allan guy a job! He has way too much time on his hands.

  • This is up there in my infamous Top 10. What a bunch of great, knowledgeable and fun guys who have made their dreams come true. Kudos to all of you.

QOTD #1: Whether in my entrepreneurial or real world, my Aunt Mabel gave me my chance in life. She took me into her home when I was walking the streets after high school.

QOTD #2: Chicago, hands down and don't remember the name but you walk down stairs to basement type pizzeria and there's graffiti all over the walls. Memorable

QOTD #3: I'm a brief kinda guy but like to experience the boxers just to “hang” now and then.

    Cheers!

P.S. I hope I'm in the Top 300. Old printer/typesetter at heart and would appreciate the craftmanship of the posters.

  • The comment originated from a Yankee fan. 'Nuff said.

No one here should ever question GV's or RP's rep.

  • oregon5361

    Gary,
I loved the show and don't listen to the haters!
To me it seems no diffrent than us finding out how you made it so big from starting so small and a family owned store front.
And listening to how Brice from Emeritus made it and so forth!!
I can honestly tell you every winery I have fallen in love with and have added to my collection and or my cellar has a story and I have made it a point to know the story behind the makers of them.
I love to know what drives people and what thier passion is so keep it up!!!

If you think these guys sound cocky I'd love to introduce you to some other wine peeps I know!!
I love that these guys are trying to make a good wine under 15.00 for all of us,
and to boot they make it a little fun with the packaging:)!!!
Why don't the haters go to another sand box and play!

  • stevo

Great show GV. Tons of good content.

  • pawncop

Excellent episode(s), great guests with relevant knowledge and willing to discuss it.

Am a huge fan of Malbec and will look for this wine.

QOTD #1 – Fellow by the name of Frank Jones, while he did not give me a chance, he pointed me in the right direction and then told me I was not good enough to work in his dog lab, that I needed education.

QOTD #2 – No good pizza places where I live. Pizza Hut is what I am stuck with.

QOTD #3 – Am not a box wine person but good wine is good wine no matter the package.

Good luck with your next endeavors, I believe you will succeed.

  • vpass64

GV I don't think you should really be concerned about this issue. Although all your fans do appreciate your comment, I believe it was not needed. You commenting in general is needed, but not trying to show through honesty when someone tries to point a finger at you. You can't be like Leno and try to make everyone happy because it just won't happen. Rush Limbaugh is worth hundreds of millions of dollars because a lot of people like him and a lot of people hate him, but they all listen to him. You're going to need that bank to buy the Jets my friend. And that's who you are to all the true fans of WLTV. Its that good old fashion type of friendship. You don't need to explain yourself for actions you do. You choose whatever guests you want on the show. The thieves are looking to capture a niche in the market. Great for them. People want to bash on them and you for being entrepreneurial, that's their problem. The theives don't want to make everyone drink $10 wine. They just want to capture that market. That doesn't mean that great quality wine won't still be around. Its the same reason Walmart and other chain stores won't ever totally beat out the smart and good quality stores. I apologize for the long comment, but I thought it was important in this case.

Cheers Gary and the WLTV fans

  • adrums

I liked this show quite a bit… if the setting made GV score the wine slightly higher than he might have drinking it alone in front of a spreadsheet, well, he really shouldn't be faulted for that… The enjoyment each of us derive from any given glass of wine is inseparable from the environment in which it is consumed, even when we're striving for absolute, incorruptible objectivity… regarding cockiness; to succeed in a competitive field in tough times, confidence bordering on cockiness is hardly a fatal flaw…
    QOTD1: My first principal teacher.
    QOTD2: In Spokane, WA… perhaps Bennedito's, or maybe David's.
QOTD3: I'm a bottle person, and I appreciate dark tinted glass to reassure me that then wine has been spared light damage!

  • M_Woolley

Why give a score at all when a wine maker is on? There is no need. Anyone would be influenced if the people are sitting right next to them. I had a friend who made wine every year, you could use it to remove bugs and tar from your car it was so bad, but I took it every year and thanked him for the gift. If I were to score it in front of him, you think I would give it a 50? Gary, your too good a guy to slam the guest with a lousy score, so sniff, taste and tell us what you think. No score needed.

  • GLrocks

Let's put this whole GV rating thing to rest for this show. There was a lot going on during both episode's . He scored The Show 88-90 which is great for the wine and it's price point. I respect GV's ratings a heck of lot more than the Wine Speculator. I was not questioning GV's rating I was just commenting on the fact that when he was drinking the wine etc . It did not look like he was overly impressed with the wine. He did mention the mid palette and that is a fact with a lot of under $20 full bodied reds. Over oaking is a really easy way to put a wine out of balance as is RS (discussed as well) on the front. As always I am looking forward to more reviews ….how about some blind reviews ???? I just love higher end (above $45) blind tastings there are always surprises. always

  • If you're ever in Bowling Green Ohio, go to Myles Pizza. I once had a friend drive one back to Ontario for me when he and the wife were coming back up from Florida. I thought I had the record for furthest distance pizza delivery until I met a guy who had a pizza delivered to him from London to Amsterdam. You can't make this up.

    Anyways, Myles is great.

Pretty much anywhere else in Ohio I made it Papa John's.

    Great show!

  • Bwahahaha yea – you don't need to look any further than that. 😛

  • Oh oh! I want to DJ at “The Show” 🙂

I thought the 3 thieves were sincere, genuine, and I believe they are trying to bring good QPR to the market with a little edge. So, props.

    QOTD #1 My wife. Hah!

QOTD #2 I have 3 separate regional answers:

In Portland, OR where I currently live the MUST-HAVE local secret pizza is called A Pizza Scholls. Anthony Bourdain actually covered it on his Portland show. They make one fresh batch of (amazing) dough each day, and the restaurant is open until it's gone.

In my previous home of Oakland, CA everyone knows you haven't lived until you've had Zachary's pizza. The most incredible Chicago Style pie with glaciers of cheese and a crust so flakey you might think it was made in a croissant.

Finally, in Madison, WI where I grew up – go to the Roman Candle Pizzeria. Specifically the east-side location is where you're going to get that local neighborhood-y feel and great pizza pies.

    QOTD #3 – Commando.

  • My wife gave me a chance.

Great pizza right up the street from the Winelibrary in Summit. Summit Brick Oven Pizza! Nothing like a real wood fired brick oven pie.

    Sports boxers.

Great show, and I look forward to drinking some SHOW sometime soon.

  • slimdogny

Good show. Nice insight into the marketing aspects and leverage. So much good wine coming out of Argentina right now and so well priced. Any NY/NJ retailers have this wine?

QOTD: Northern Manhattan Pizza: Grandpa's Brick Oven. White Plains, NY – Italian Pavilion on Mamaroneck Ave.

  • slimdogny

Yes. Summit Brick Oven is really tight pizza. Awesome crust.

  • Bill B

Great show. Really enjoyed the banter and behind the scenes wine biz talk. I hope we can look forward to $50 wine in a box for under 10 bucks. That would be awesome. Loved these guys.
QOTD1: My major professor in grad school. He took me on when I was ready quit. Have a great job today because he mentored me.

  • joelbombardier

Wow. I'm with everyone else, this two-part show was great! I loved the insight into the wine industry.

    As for the questions:

#2: I'm not seeing many people from the PNW around here, but up in Seattle you can get great pizza and italian food at Salvadore. It's really good. If you're on the the Olympic peninsula though the BEST pie is at Bella Luna Pizza in Indianola. Seriously.

#3: Pretty much bottles, I've done jugs, liters and magnums but haven't hit up the box. They've got some serious stereotyping/preconceptions to overcome!

  • JayZee13

Super show – very enjoyable and interesting. “The Show Malbec” sounds like a good Tuesday night wine.

QOTD 1: When I was in high school, two teachers decided to make me the editor of the newspaper. That was my first opportunity at leadership and I have been repeatedly put in those positions my whole life thanks to that experience.

QOTD 2: In Cleveland, Mama Santa's in Little Italy on Mayfield Rd.

    QOTD 3: Briefs

  • Greg B.

Big G, I'll being lookiing for the Show. Like the QPR that's still there with Malbec.

QOTD: Mulberry pizza on South Beverly in Beverly Hills.

  • ErieWineGuy

    Great point!

Gary IS always telling us that his or any other scores shouldn't mean much.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Booo Laa Boooo LAAAAA, Booo Laaaa Booooo LAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!! GIIIIIIMMEEEEE
    Soooome MOOOOOOOORE VINOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yo G , CHIIIIIIIIILLLLL OOOOOOOOUUUUUUT, Ya don't need ta “tank Yuuur Blood” for
    NOOOOBOOOOOODYYYYYY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • I don't read t6hat many haters, more like sceptics. we all have diffrent approaches to this “Tv show”, some for the rating of wine, some for the giestas other for the insight or eye opener to all different thingsa wine entail. Sceptics are good, It keeps everyone alert.

Concerning Gary's honesty, there can be no sceptics, 830 shows prove that.

  • Allan, Allan, passion for making a buck is as important as passion for the gulp or a grape or anything. The common dominator is passion aka, do something really good and enjoying it, whether it is talking about wine, making a wine or a poster or a bottle or giving an audience something to like. WLTV have , what ,300 000 viewers on a regular basis, all are not just wanting Gary to sniff and whirl a wine and talk about the smell and the taste, some want more.

  • Allan

Lol, that is funny. Just statin' what i feel, that's all.

  • Allan

    LOL!

    waynoooo, u know i love u! :0)

  • Allan

I see what you're saying, and respect it. I just think, that if you want to make great wine, you have to have passion for it, otherwise the wine will not be any good. Makin' money from it, will always come in second. To me these guys (which i'm sure mean good) just came across my computer-screen, looking to put money in first, and passion in second place. Simple as that. And Vayniacs, i'm not a hater. I'm just sayin' what i think.

  • More sexy? The man who are in them 😉

What a minute? Is this the 1-900 forum? I always get that mixed up with the Wine Library TV forum. Awkward.

Great website. I didn’t check out your noise but I promise I will!

  • Roland

    Hi Gary

I love Malbec wine but please tell them two things. It should have less alcohol so the structure of the wine balances with all the other components. Also if they used french oak you would not get such an aggressive oak taste and it would be smoother on the palate.

    Thanks.

  • iloveriesling

    1) Wifey – lame I know – but no one else was willing to put up with me in my early twenties
    2) if you're ever in Melbourne, Australia – Ladro is the place to go, although Pizza Meine Liebe is a close second…
    3) Never done a box – plastic bottle yes, but never the Goon bag…

  • bloggerandy

LOL at: Smithers? from… The Simpsons?

Hell yeah we are entrepreneurial, like piranas!

Charlie's question was “Who has given you a chance?” I'd like to point out that this is a very critical component of entrepreneurship which is also the result of many failed opportunities. The fact of the matter is that very few people have started with nothing and ended up with everything just because of their skill in business. People can do great things by themselves, but most people will not make it big without either having an initial investment on hand, or an investor to take interest in them and sponsor them.

Now I am not by any means ragging on anybody here, but a lot of people seem to make it look easy by saying that working hard at your goals will give you a definite opportunity, when they, themselves, have had some sort of break to get them where they are. Everybody loves a good rags to riches story, but keep in mind that there are a lot of people out here busting our asses, collecting unemployment, supporting families, that don't have something to build off of, we have to start from scratch.

  • iloveriesling

…although I have attempted to sleep on one…

  • Smithers….release the Malbec!

  • Braden G

    Ha, fair enough.

  • markbigs

Great show. I love the behind the scenes wine biz discussion. A suggestion for the three thieves: is it possible to post a list of retailers for your wine on your website? The shipping costs for buying in your online store make it a much more expensive product, but I would try the bandit pack it if were local.

QOTD 1: my boss Bob from early restaurant years, thought I don't do that anymore
QOTD 2: V & T in NYC, not the best, but my pizza tastes are influenced by sentimentality and nostalgia
QOTD 3: bottles, but would like a soft package for boating, if the wine is good

  • trebalert

1: my x high school guidance counselor who became my boss and is now my friend.
    2: Roberta's in Bushwick Brooklyn
3: I've never had a box wine that I didn't want to cook with.

gary: do more show's on the business angle. You know too much not to share.

  • Hahahahaha…good point Woolley, but obviously you have never seen GV give the smack-down face-to-face on a wine rep. It has been done. The most recent one I remember was the nice dude from that Pennsylvania winery who was on the show, and GV totally dissed some way over-priced Cab he had. I think he may have even passed on it. Does anyone else remember face-to-face GV smack-downs?

  • Nice finish to an interesting show. Wish I would have gotten in on the poster action, but I'm not hard-core enough to wait by the computer for the show release….I never won any of those damn radio-call-in contests either. 'Be the 99th caller…' my ass!

These guys seem cool, but I still have mixed feelings about the whole process. Are they basically trying to create the next Yellowtail, but for South America? I hope not. They seem too much into wine and are at least calling out the vintages and terroirs, so they won't fall into the bulk-blender/mass-producer/crap wine category. If they make a solid product at a reasonable price, but still maintain some distinction year to year, then I'm all for it! Looking forward to finding The SHow and seeing for myself.

QOTD1: Still pulling the Scrappy Doo on my own. No breaks here. Fighting every step of the way.
QOTD2: Definitely, in Boston, in the North End, the original Pizzeria Regina. By the slice. They have Moretti on tap too. Insanity.
QOTD3:Boxer-briefs while drinking boxed and bottled wines. I'm a fence-straddler like that.

  • Allan

    Laid Back Friday!

  • mattgmann

Good basketball on. Watching OSU beat Michigan. Gonna switch to the Kentucky game after this. They're down early to Alabama. God Bless March

  • mattgmann

Sweet Merciful Crap! Evan Turner buzzer beater. Props to Michigan for playing a great game…but HOLY COW……you've got to see the replay
