I think this is the first time GV has changed his score on a brown bag episode for the second wine, after revealing the first. That’s not like him as he usually trusts his initial reaction. Unfortunately two poor wines, but, surprisingly not panned in the usual way.

Wichita area here. What in the world are they doing to our Big 12?!?! geeeeesh

  • Anonymous

I’m going to be off the grid tomorrow, and Monday for that matter.
Going to have to catch up!

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • NY Pete

my QOTD … do “cindies” watch the thunder show????

  • waynooo daaa wino

    DISQUS SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Phredd3

    There's a show? Who's Cindy?

  • AntonT

I know! Im a die hard Husker fan and I believe that the Big 12 is done for.

  • murso

Shame about those wines. I'm confident I'd enjoy either. When I was younger, Hanzell Chards showed more restraint and refinement. That's when he was around. They were worthy of a few years of age to tone them down.

qotd- I thought the summer was re-runs. In any event, I watch Nova, Frontline, and Independent Lens as religiously as possible.
    And Stewart/Colbert.

  • Phredd3

QOTD: No TV for me starting Saturday. Looking forward to it.

  • guymandude

You just now heard of the 2 bagger joke?

    Surprised by those 2 wines.

  • drt999

Alas, I still do not have a tv, and so cannot answer the QOTD

As for the show, I shall refrain from adding my own cutting remark on Chardonnay to the clutter

  • YoungVines

Great episode Gary! Love the blind taste tests! Crazy about that Meursault! Too bad! Thanks for continuing to make great shows tasting great wines. Love it! This lurker is coming out to play…

  • Randall

    I just saw a pattern developing there… πŸ™‚

    QOTD Warehouse 13 and Eureka

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Pretty decent show today. Always love the brown bags. As you know, we are never happy GV, so grab 4 wines for the next one…lol. Maybe some double blinds? Still great to get an honest opinion on some pricey wines…especially Chard. Hooooo!!!!

QOTD: I'd have to say I'm ready to watch a lot of baseball now that hockey is over. And I'm even pumped about the World Cup, oddly enough. No TV shows for me, because “House” doesn't come back until December.

1 MONTH UNTIL THE BIG PARTY!!!!!

  • I also like a bit of oak in Chardonnays but not that much.

    QOTD: Top Gear…

  • waynooo daaa wino

    qotd: Baseball, Baseball, Baaaaaasebaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllll………………..

  • nickgrzenda

Always love the blind Gary. But we still have yet to see a double blind episode, come on… you know you want to do it!

QOTD: I'm more excited to be outside enjoying the summer weather, but if I had to pick a show it would probably be White Collar.

  • Steve_r_vb

gotta love brown bags. though doesnt seem like you would have given a better rating to either of them if you knew the brands. gotta love the hack saw comment. qotd: reruns of the office, community, and preseason football here in a few weeks.

  • I will address this

  • pawncop

Really enjoyed this episode, as I am not a huge fan of Chardonnay. I do appreciate the lighter unoaked versions much more that than, what I consider the typical oaked version.

I really enjoy the brown bag episodes, and would encourage you to continue this trend.

QOTD – More time outside now for a little while until it gets so hot (Texas) that it is unpleasant, like in the next day or two. I do watch baseball, and keep hoping my beloved Texas Rangers can figure out a way to be more consistent. Until that happens we are bound for “Wiat til next year!” all over again.

  • Randall

    Thanx

  • Myself, I just can't seem to get into chardonnays. I haven't really given it a fair chance, but nothing I've had really impressed me all that much so far.

QOTD: Kind of away from TV shows at the moment, but World Cup games this summer are regular enough, so let's go with that. Just 14 hours or so now, let's go Red Devils!

  • Question of the day, South Africa World Cup 2010!!!!!
I don't own a TV so I will be having a great time watching it in a great sports bar or something like that. Other than that I don't watch TV, every waking hour is spent taking care of business, on the hustle, and enjoying this beautiful life. πŸ™‚

  • David M Roberts

Still not a huge Chard fan – though I have had some unoaked bottles that are okay (i.e. Stanley Lambert's “Pristine” Chardonnay).

In any case, on to QOTD: Glad “Burn Notice” and “Royal Pains” are back with new episodes. A neighbor and I have a tradition where we get together in his basement sports bar each Thursday, pop a bottle of wine, and watch those two shows back to back. Makes for an easy segue to Friday.

  • Cardiff_Kie

Nice succinct show. Personal fan of the brown bagging.

    QOTD: Entourage

  • BenBurch

Love me some brown bags! Bummer show though. Both of those are way out of my price range right now anyway, but I'd be hesitant to give either a try. Plus, I'm not a big Chard fan.

Nice having the show up and running and having you back GV!

QOTD: I'm excited that Basketball and Hockey will be done so that Baseball will dominate sports for the next 2 or 3 months. Pretty excited about that. No better show on TV than a Baseball Game!

  • hah what a let down for the wines.
QOTD: I don't watch TV (now that hockey is over)

  • tflangan

    QOTD: WLTV!

I’m afraid it will always be “Wait till next year” for any Rangers fan. I grew up watching the Rangers since I was raised in the Arlington area and have almost given up on supporting them. Tom Hicks has ruined the team and should be run out of town. I will just enjoy playing golf in the early mornings this summer because in Texas it’s already getting too hot to play any other time.

  • Anonymous

I agree! I totally forgot about Entourage. Excellent show.

  • CharlieTN

QOTD: Don't really watch TV. Does Braves baseball count as a TV show? Because I watch that every day.

Bummer on the chards… I thought you were coming around to those butter bombs?

  • Anonymous

USA, USA, USA, USA!!! And if they don’t succeed then I will cheer Italy, Italy, Italy!!! I am secretly hoping Fabio Cannavaro can lead my beloved Azzuri to another surprise win in this years world cup.

  • Anonymous

So who is your favorite for the World Cup? I predict Spain. Fernando Torres will be dominant as he was during the 2006 World Cup.

  • DAveAll

You recycle those bags, Gary? ugh? hahahaha. I liked that you moved around to show us the wines in the light – good job!
Nice discussion of the wines – one of the better this year! thanks for sharing your thoughts.
QOTD: show to watch this summer? Ah, the Craig Ferguson Late Late show with Gary V! of course, when is that again?

  • DAveAll

oh, as for Chards – I like the oak, smokey and buttery. So thanks for the heads up on ones I like! smile.

  • This used to me, really dislike the oak and the butter. Just recently had a Gary Farrell (back from when GF he was still winemaker) and it blew me away. I saw the light, Chard done right can be magnificent!

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Top Chef, Mad Men. Not sure when Rescue Me and Dexter start up again.

Had the Clos Blancheau James Berry Vineyard Chard. Well-balanced and not over-bearing oak.

  • Oy, overoaked Chard… That's rough, brotha.

QOTD: The new Top Chef. Love it.

  • QOTD – White Collar

Looking forward to more brown bags.

  • A dumb Rhein king

Where's that back pedal at? πŸ™‚ I thought you scored them kind of high by your reactions.

QOTD: I don't watch TV. If it's on I'm drawn to it like a bug to a light and become a zombie while watching it, so I decided that I could get a lot more done without it.

  • sapdog

Love the brown bag head to head, but hey – I thought your palate was embracing the butter popcorn chardonnay oak dude these days?

QOTD: now that Lord Stanley is decided for another year….. it is on to FIFA!! Unless of course it is a Sunday morning and the head is hurtin' in which case -> Golf on TV rules!

  • Love the brown bags. K. Murph great picks.
    QOTD; N.A.

  • waynooo daaa wino

    DISQUS BLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now i can't “reply” to anybody…… Take DISQUS AND SHOVE IT US YOUR
    AAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • are there new episodes this summer?

  • YoungDave

    TOUGH results today… damn.

QOTD: I will continue to watch “Burn Notice” now that the new season has started to air, and I recently started watching the new show “The Good Guys” starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks. Funny show, and I'd like to see how it holds up in the ratings after a few episodes.

  • subdaimon

good ep, interesting blinds! I generally pan new world Chard so know how you feel

QOTD: Burn Notice – good show all around

  • Randall

What is this “hockey”? Is it the same thing as “soccer”?

  • ChrisNY2_uae

I have no idea what's on TV these days.

But can some statistician out there give a look at Gary's brown-bag ratings vs. non-blind ratings? It seems like your scores are significantly lower than usual when you don't know exactly what it is. I'd say that a) for your non-blind reviews, knowing the brand of the wine and seeing the label contributes to the experience and to your overall enjoyment of the wine…and/or b) for the blind tastings, you're hesitant to over-rate a wine that could potentially be classified as sub-par by the general consensus (or by RP, ST, etc.)..

So GV… do you think there's an enhanced psychological element involved in these blind-tastings? I could be wrong about your ratings being lower, but it's an interesting concept.

    Fun show regardless, thanks!
