  • You love those two schools (way to make it up with the FSU peeps), your thoughts on UCLA? Two of those wines are going on the ‘want’ list. Realistically, its going to be a long while before I can purchase them… and consume them with a burger, but I can dream.

QOTD: I will be drinking Mercury Geyserville Jug Wine–the 500–because funds are a little low. It is an outstanding everyday sipper.

  • u think 95 is low?

  • TomP

Lots of thunder on this show.

    QOTD – Bogle ’08 Cab

Please tell me that I won’t have to endure another 617 eps with you before the Great Man returns. If I will, the wines that I’ll be drinking this weekend will be too numerous to mention 😉

  • JohnBlueLabel

    GV,
Long time since I posted, sorry.
Great show. I’m all about the nebbiolo. Giacosa is awesome, next to Gaja he’s the man.
Also love the Tog, have some of the 2004 that you recommended a few years back. Also da bomb.
Drinking 2004 Azelia Barolo which is fabulous. Molto Bene.
I like your characterization of Nebbiolo as a football player with some class. It’s a big powerful yet elegant wine. Think Jared Allen on Dancing with Stars.
PS: Reavis is good, but the Jets will be fine without him. Prima Donna!

QOTD — not sure, but it will have to be something really good to kick off my last week of semi-vacation!

  • dagn! 901 I wish I had the tenacity and actually money to do shows all the time. Again, good work Gary, truly impressed.
    About 5-6 seconds longer, yes
    97!!!! is that a record?
QOTD: Just two glasses of Finca El Puig Priorat. Tomorrow I think there will be pinot with the chicken that I’m serving for dinner, my baby sister is visiting so I got to splurge good, Bergström Lancelotti Vinyards perhaps? Sunday, water and homemade blueberry lemonade.

  • Alexandre-CF

WOWW, the big boys r in the house!
you r rocking dude, 93+ pts show!!!

i wish i could drink one of these this weekend….:P

QOTD: 2006 Catherine & Pierre Breton “Les Perrières” BOURGUEIL and some 2008 Primitivo di Manduria by Feudi di San Marzano

    cheers

QOTD: Right this minute Delhommeau ’08 Muscadet Harmonie. Over the weekend, hopefully some Huber Hugo sparkling rose’ and some ’07 Les Pallieres Terasse du Diable Gigondas to both celebrate our 1 week old granddaughter and to provide a nice intro to wine for her young parents! 🙂

  • Hendrik

Good job. Dr. Heidemanns Dry Reisling and Brut Sekt is my future.

  • Jeremy

Glad to have the real Gary back. Thanks for last week. The focus on Supermarket wines was awesome. And if you stop posting at 1,000 episodes, I will take over the Thunder Show.. (I’m not kidding). Working in the restaurant industry, I couldn’t agree with you more, Malbec is the flavor of the month right now. I have to wonder, where is the fad coming from? Woot Woot… I feel the same way.
I was noticing your shirt when Mott mentioned it.. THAT WAS FUNNY!! Anyway, don’t want to get too esoteric on this post, but I will say that you and I will be in contact with each other soon, and I am ready to BRING THE THUNDER!!!!

QOTD: I will be tasting 1988 Opus one out of a five liter, properly stored, (I Think), and 2005 Jaffe transformation, and hopefully, they will live up to the hype. (I’ll let you all know).

Great episode. Love the lighter color of the Barbaresco…nice demo.

    QOTD: definitely Italian, bottle TBD.

Reverse QOTD: what happened to the “whether they like it or not” phrase? I liked that extra zing, stick-it-to-the-man closing.

QOTD:2005 Rustenberg John X Merriman and a 2006 Lewelling Wight Vinyard Napa Cab.

  • QOTD – Some vino tinto from Salta, Argentina. Lots of Mendoza malbec getting the hype but I do enjoy some of the quality value coming out of salta as well

  • purplegrillz

QOTD … going to the case club bbq at Unionville vineyards out here near Lambertville NJ on Saturday evening. Anyone interested in a great chardonnay should come out and try Cameron Stark’s Pheasant Hill single vineyard. Destroys many top notch Cali chards and some say stands up to some of the best Chablis. Should be fun.

I’m a little surprised you said those two bottles bring the thunder, they’re $85 and $115 a bottle, being good is what you expect when you pay that much. Thunder would be that taste at half that cost.Again, I remind you of Chris Rock’s “that’s what you’re supposed to do” quote.

Have a great weekend Gary, everyone.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Patrick Lesec, 2006 Gigondas (Les Espalines vineyard) Cuvee Romaine. Meat and red fruit on the nose. WAY TOO YOUNG! Tannins are bitter chocolate style, but smooth. Should’ve waited, d’oh!

  • nope ! 7 more wines have gotten 97 or more under these 901 episodes

  • Whalen44

QOTD: 2002 Cafaro Cab, 1995 Burgess Cab, and a 2005 Morgan Pinot Noir.

  • LurkerKing

I live for episodes like this!! The thunder was definitely brought. Like Stone Cold Vs The Rock at summer slam kind of thunder.

I’m going to dabble in white wine this weekend. Melville Viognier.

  • Anonymous

Alamos Malbec for $9 and hits a 90 score (out there), and this is a $100 Malbec? wow.

ever consider eating a cracker between wines? smile. :* ) I know – amateur! ha.
Yes, we time your mouth time each wine. Makes ya nervous? I know one person that measures your hair each week… (not me). She says it is timed to the new moon. who knew? snicker.
(I’m going to put a bumper sticker on my car – Anything but Cab Sauv..!) I’ll contact hollywood for the movie rights.
wow – the wine glass comparison – I thought I was watching Blair Witch Project! (is that Mott standing in the corner?) very fun. I love your shows!
QotD: Viognier, Cab Franc, Presecco (did I spell that right?) and of course WATER!

  • Randall

Lucky 13… the beer that “out Red Sealed” Red Seal! Yeah, baby!
    😛

  • Anonymous

The big boys came out to play today! 97 points-wow! I plan on drinking 2008 Ercavio Roble La Mancha and some Snapple by the pool!

  • Randall

Thanks for the wine nerd info. I like to learn something new here at TSS, and not always from GV…
btw Do you have an extra chair at your table tonight? 😛

  • passion4wine

Great episode, as always super descriptions… which is really one of the main reasons I love to listen to you.
Just picked up 3 bottles of Saint Joseph Prestige Espirit de Granit- gonna pop one tonight

  • Macmillan

    Good show.

  • Jhart44

QOTD: Just finished a bottle of ’07 Robert Craig Cab.

  • Suggestion – switch to a white table cloth and put a 2nd camera in the ceiling that can ZOOM in on the glass.

  • Now that was a helluva show though I was entertained by Sir Gary. Where to start? A 100 bone Malbec? Yes, times have changed and thank goodness it did not “float your boat” or I would have been tempted.

So you think this Togni rivals the ’87 and ’97 cabs, esp the Domster. I will have to try some to believe it but believe me, I’m sure it is fantastic.

Love the shirt, the camera work on showing us the difference in the colors should be nominated for an Emmy. Great work Mott. As we know, color (pinot noir) can be on the light side with amazing nuances.

Great show and congrats on 901. One would venture a guess that Episode 1000 would be the end but I beg to differ. Knowing you, it will be either “911” or “1969.” Just my opinion.

QOTD: Well, I started off with a Greco and then my standby Oyster Bay SB and will move on to a Hillinger Sweigelt to pair with a nice risotto and veal chop off the grille. Tomorrow I have to pop a ’97 Dom just to revisit it.

    Cheers!

P.S. Thanks for showing us the couch. 🙂

  • RickyDub

GV. Thanks for bringing some knowledge on the Nebbiolo grape. Don’t know squat about it and need to spend some time with it. I like the Pinot meets Cab / Bordeaux description. Has me intrigued.

QOTD: Lots of water cuz am getting over a cold (don’t summer colds just SUCK?!). But if I’m feeling frisky, I may crack one of the Phillips Hill Ring ‘O Fire Pinots I just took delivery on. Giddyup and good weekend!

    Miguel Merino Blanco Viura 2008

  • VouvrayedMyPants

Seriously. Whats the deal with the teach the controversy? I just came out of over a years worth of lurkerland because of that shirt. Did you like the design Gary or have you actually been hoodwinked? Anyway, I’m drinking some wheat beer and orange juice this weekend.

  • Anonymous

    mohito’s !!

  • purplegrillz

There are many bottles at that cost that bring no thunder and oceans of bottles that bring no thunder at half the cost. And he clearly saved many people $100 panning the malbec. He devotes plenty of time to cheaps, give him some slack?

  • Anonymous

    Fair enough.

  • Fashion816

QOTD Rusty Nail—-23 scotch, 13 drambue

  • Anonymous

    Great episode

QOTD: after watching earlier episode this week, having some friends over for chocolate and wine…..2000 Villa Le Prata Brunello and 2001 Speri Recioto. Just cheated and tried the brunello….very good after 2 hour decant.

  • Anonymous

And how does that make you feel?

  • canadapete

Thanks for really demonstrating the amazingly light color of the Barbaresco. It’s very useful to appreciate both the age and the style of the wine can be light in color, yet massive in quality!

  • Anonymous

It’s that good? I’ll give it a whirl.

  • Anonymous

I really like the color thing you guys did, thanks for all that extra effort! I literally said “Wow…” out loud when I saw the difference there. I definitely would never and didn’t expect that. I got a new respect for lighter color wines now!

QOTD: Waking up early to watch the Community Shield (Manchester United vs Chelski) so I’ll probably be drinking some micheladas.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. I’d like to add that I’m on board w/Italy overall. I like to think that I consume a fair amount of wine from diverse regions, and Italy more often than not comes out a winner more than a loser. I can’t say that for the States, or France, or Spain, or South America, or Aussie. Italy, be it the big barolos or the food friendly barberas, they just always hit it. AND…their whites are pretty damn special, too.

QOTD: Right now, a Bordeaux blanc from the Reignac. Tomorrow a surf and turf that I’m hoping to mix it up w/some good chards. and some big rhone blancs.

Oh and 1000…phewy. Put ‘er down when you are ready. Just make sure you’ve covered every wine for every vintage.

  • Doug

    Great show!
QOTD: Sierra Nevada Tumbler Brown Ale and a 2006 Hautes-Cotes De Beaune

  • Anonymous

    Great show Homey!!!!!

QOTD: I just opend up a 2006 Pharoah Moan but this thing needs a good 5 hours or more in the Royal Decanter. 🙂 But I will be drinking some David Arthur and Larkmead and Orin Swift Mercury this weekend as well. Maybe even a Stags Leap Magnum or two.

How about you Homey….what are you drinking this weekend??

  • I am thinking that I need to pick up a case of 2001 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili and drink it when I retire… maybe a second case to try now and then the other then.

Sounds like we need to rig up an overhead camera and then get @Mott a camera switcher.

  • I think this show is starting to hit its stride.
    😉
    That was a great ep.
I laughed, because after the the Malbec and before you introduced the Barbaresco, I made a mental note ask in the comments what was the highest scoring (for you) wine you’ve ever had on the show. Then you go and rate the Italian wine 97 pts.
That Cali Cab sounds awesome, too.
    QOTD: B.C. roses

  • I don’t drink them, but I like them – it’s a pretty good sipper

  • Anonymous

I really like the Piedmont wines. I just need to find a store that has more of them. QOTD – I had a couple glasses of 2005 Chateau Haut Bellevue. It was quite good. I am now drinking an American made belgian tripel style beer. Yum.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Friday night we had leftover value Cabernet from Chile, Tamaya. Saturday night, no beverages, only water, I’m working (at the wine shop). I have to think about what wine to open Sunday evening. One of the white summer sippers or a red with something on the grill. Hmmm, we’ll see.
