QOTD: I’m going to run with the “what have you discovered recently” part of this question; Upstate New York dessert wines. I’ve had a few recently which have been surprisingly good. Actually just the other day I had a fruit wine which I thought was exceptional; Montezuma Winery’s rhubarb wine. I’m always skeptical of these small wineries which make mostly fruit wine, because 90% of the time it just drinks like syrup, but this one was nicely off-dry with a major kick of acidity. Another would be Casa Larga Vineyards’ 2005 Fiori Vidal ice wine. Really a great wine.

RIP Lapierre! – a case of this beauty at home

    Yay Beaujolais.

  • I loved the interview. It really felt like just two guys who love wine sitting and talking about it and drinking. Awesome. Hahaha… before you even said it I went to his twitter.
QOTD: I was going to culinary school for the last two years and now I’m just finishing up my internship so my wine spending will go up as soon as I get a paying job.

  • Zinopece

I’ve liked every Beaujolais 2009 that I’ve tried and they open up well too. I’m holding some back to see how they age.
QOTD: there are so many underrated wines, but I’ve especially been taken by many regions of Italy. Sangiovese is a fantastic grape and should be taken more seriously and both reds and whites from Campania are worth exploring.

    Great guest! Great interview GV!
I’ve rediscovered Napa Cabs and Merlowwws! YUM
It seems like a buyers market still so I’m holding out for good deals in the 20 to 50 range.

    G-Dawg!

These shows will go down in WLTV HISTORY as “THE YELLOW SHIRT SHOWS.” That distinction will mark a week-long burst of excellence that historians, when looking back at WLTV from the future, will marvel at.

The Smirking Lurking, often cantankerous and full of criticism, has, this week, been appeased.

    Carry on.

    Great Episode! Interesting Guest.

QOTD1: Still not going above 20 dollars a bottle, even on special occasions. I got no dollars to spend and the collection I built from when I did, is slowly diminishing. 🙁

QOTD2: I guess I’m drinking more white blends from California and Washington.

  • Another solid guest….tried a few more Merlots, yes F’ing Merlot lately.

Mangini – how long does he stay up on the board?

  • Anonymous

QOTD1: My wine is around $15-25 on average with a cap at $45/bottle for special bottles. I was lucky enough to not need to change my wine purchasing habits since I was already at a sustainable level.

QOTD2: I LOVE Cabernet Franc. I’m sitting on 3 bottles of it right now as I wait for them to age for 6-12 months. And I’ve been trying Pinot Noir from NZ to get their take on the varietal.

  • Hmm, why is there so much wine and so little bones? Hello 39 min episode on a friday!
QOTD: I spend any type of money on a wine. That and chocolate is the only things I spend money on. Discovered very nice and very affordable wines in Puycheric(Languedoc-Roussillion) traveling through there in september.

  • lilgoat

Do you think Gary decanted these wines before trying them?

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • Thanksgiving wines! Yes! Back soon with a comment though I see you are featuring my fav mag. F&W is a first-class pub.

  • castello

No, he rarely does and will let us know when he has.

  • Really loved this show… great rhythm to the episode and your (GV) interviewing has vastly improved. Great guest–eloquent and thoughtful.

QOTD1: I spend too much for a young kid who cannot really afford it… but I enjoy every penny spent. My limit right now is $50.00 ( there is a lot of wiggle room).

QOTD: Champagne… Gary got me started on the Jose Dhondt and now it is farmer’s fizz every Friday!

  • QOTD: Spent $50 bones on a 2000 sparkling wine for my future big birthday next year but anything else stays in the $10-$18 dollar range.

For all the heat you get interrupting, I think you do a great job of asking about the back story, how they got started, which I find as interesting as what they do now.Great guest. Thanks.

qotd; what ever I haven’t had before

  • Great, great show with a very knowledgeable and nice guy. And he interrupted you! Mercy.QOTD 1: I find myself spending about the same amount for wine though I must admit I look for more QPRs and off-varietals (Falanghina, Verdejo) for my weekday quaffing wine than I had a few years ago.QOTD 1a: French whites, specifically Sancerre, Alsatian rieslings and pinot gris really floats my boat.Cheers!

  • NY Pete

    another great show dude.

  • NY Pete

I spend waaaaay to much money on wine.

  • NY Pete

a sangiovese/petite sirah blend from Carlotta Cellars out in CA …
    also sancerre …
    and finally, wines from Sardinia.
    have a great weekend!

    J … E … T … S … JETS JETS JETS!

  • Great show, love the Beaujolais’.

QoTD: Still going the inexpensive route…

  • NY Pete
  • Smahlatz

QOTD : Effectively both. I am spending more on wines I can cellar, and will appreciate, allowing me to sell some off or trade, and drink the remainder at inexpensive prices.

Must’ve been the Argyle extended tirage?

  • thnx bro 🙂

  • means a lto to me Dino!

  • miss u pal!

  • TSL u rule!

  • Excellent episode! I really enjoyed the guest and being such an avid fan of the Beaj (had to pop a bottle of the Bouland Morgon de Lys 09′ while I watched this episode) it was double fun! I have to get my hands the Marcel, but I keep missing out when it becomes available at WL’s site! It just sells out so fast!

QOTD: Haven’t made any recent discoveries of note. I have upped how much I’m willing to spend on a bottle of wine though to $20 though from $15. I seem to be getting much better value around there.

Sidenote: Just picked up 2 bottles of the 2005 Phillips Hill Toulouse. Looking forward to them very much!

  • Cheaper then on me. 😉

  • Actually it’s the 2000 Sparking Pointe Brut Seduction (70% Chard/30$ Pinot Noir) from the North Fork of Long Island. 🙂

    Though the Argyle sounds yummy.

  • Dusanmal

Many thumbs up for this episode 🙂

QOTD: I don’t see any near future return to my pre-2008 wine purchase habits (although, theoretically I am doing better now than then) when price limit was more like 50$. Price limit now is likely 20$ with resistance going exponentially after it. Though, there is possible jump to 100$+ wine for special occasion time or two per year (in other words, if I am already spending over 25$, I better use the occasion for something truly special). On positive side, spending less and seeking good value can be extremely rewarding and at that price range it is fun to explore new things.

  • Larry

I haven’t really altered my cost per purchase just not buying as many wines for long aging because of my age more than anything else. I have never been big on buying wines over $60 anyway and still look for value as much as possible. Beaujolais is a good example of value wines with great taste. Only new discovery for me was Susan Balboa wines from Argentina good wines at reasonable prices.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: The more I learn about wine, the more I want to try & buy, so for me the amount I’ve been buying (and the size of my cellar) has constantly been increasing!

  • dz

Fantastic show, the euphoria you both showed was the same as I have been experiencing nearly every night drinking these beautiful wines. Check out Steven Spurrier’s column in the Dec. Decanter mag., where with Michel Bettane they are drinking 96,93 and 86 Burgundys along with vintage Champagnes and guess which wine stole the show? It was a Domaine Janin Moulin-a-Vent 1985. Janin makes some seriously age worthy Beaujolais! In my limited experience they always blossom on the 2nd or 3rd day even on 4 or 5 yr. old wines. My advice is to try as many of these Crus as you can because there are many different styles to enjoy!

  • Meh

Pretty clear that the six guest thing was pulled completely out of no where. I’m at about 20 since that statement was made…

  • another great episode. go BU! But really, Gary, the yellow sweater three days in a row?

First of all – GO OWLS!! A Rice senior here, happy to see a fellow Owl on WLTV.

QOTD: Considering that I’m a CKC member, I’ve definitely gotten more and more willing to spend money on wine over the last 12-18 months. Learning about it helps, as does going to tastings frequently. As it has grown into one of my biggest passions, it seems reasonable to spend more. Recent discoveries include a fantastic, inexpensive Aussi cab (I may be willing to spend more, but I still look for bargains) and some top-notch Cotes-du-Rhones that are better than many CDPs at 1/3 the price.

  • First off… Gary, sorry my Packers BLANKED your J-e-t-s, JETS, JETS, JETS!
Local store has a huge sale on everything in store. Needless to say, I am stocking up. My budget is kind of limited, so I’ve been using WLTV, podcasts & store tastings to lead me along. Tonight I bought a Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin, a couple Washington State late harvest or reserve cellar Rieslings, a South African Pinotage blend and a couple budget Chards and Merlots. Thanks to WLTV, expanded my range to different Malbecs & Riojas as well.
Great show! May have to make 1 last trip to wine store to ferret out a cru Beaujolais!

Great guest and interview GV. I have definitely been spending more money on wine lately. Also, working in a restaurant with a good size wine list, I have noticed an upward trend in what people are willing to spend on wine. As for good wines lately, I was really impressed by the ’08 Palazzo Cabernet franc. Also impressed with Louis de Sacy. Grand Cru grower champaign for under 30 bucks!

  • Fantastic guest! Bring him back. Great ep.

  • Bring back Santa Gary Vee for the holidays

  • Another great show, Gary. Ray had me at “carnitas tacos.”

QOTD: The wife has me on a tight leash so I keep my wine expenses in the $15 – $30 range.

  • GREAT show Gary!
AS soon as I can I going to buy a 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon, hope I can find it! I watched the 3 stooges as much as I could!
QOTD:Looking for great deals… could spend more but love the challenge of the under $20.00.

Nothing to do with this show….I wanted to say that I enjoyed a Panther Creek pinot noir last night. Mmmmm
