    QOTD; Malbec

    QOTD: Good looking exchange students.

  • NickyGogol

QOTD: Best bang for you buck reds, or killer carmenere (see Montes Purple Angel) or Rain Forest…Favorite animal 3 toed sloth.

  • QOTD: Amazon

  • I love it when the oak monster makes an appearance! Gary, you are truly hilarious.. However, I was sorry that my namesake wine (A Lisa) was less than spectacular (fake, too much makeup, blonde bimbo-like”) Ha!

    QOTD: Tikal Malbec

  • Great show Gary. Totally agree on the Ben Marco, not amazed by it, but really happy to have it this week on a half price bottle night for like $18 or something like that.

    QOTD – churrascaria

  • All Kinds of crazy on this episode. Me likes. GREAT SHOW DUDE-I-MUS!

    QOTD: Soccer

Request or ROTD: I know it is late but (especially on the east coast) could you do a couch friday episode, open a pack of hockey cards and sip some sparkling wines! That would be my jam!

    Thanks!

  • QOTD: Carnival

  • Nick

Great show, sucks that once again the oak monster shows up but unfortunately that’s smth they still need to work on in Argentina. Less make-up, more time in the vineyards/cellar.

I know we just had this episode, but could you do a nerd show on Tempranillo and include Zuccardi Tempranillo Q ?

    QOTD:
South-America = passion, openmindness, heartwarming people, beautiful countries, sharing more then you possess, dance & unfortunately a lot of violent crime

  • Nick

I agree with you Mauricio. Coke is huge in S-A but it’s huge in Europe as well. The difference is that in S-A everybody does it in the open while here everbody hides that they’re using. eg: so many people doing coke on the dancefloors in S-A vs long queues at the toilets in Europe for doing some.

Loving the new finish, GV, nice work.
This reminds me of some old episodes. Funny image of the animation- you always just pull these weird things out of nowhere.

QOTD: Mostly just good drinking Malbecs. But then in 2008 when Casa Lapostolle won WS wine of the year, I got more excited about Chilean Cabs. In my experience, they are a good combo of new and old world to my pallette.

Was hoping the OM would wait for the 5th anniversary show to make an appearance! That guys timing sucks. LOL

    QOTD: grilled meat everywhere!

  • QOTD: Incredible variety and amazing people

  • Anonymous

QOTD: South America = somewhere I definitely need to visit!! Great show GV.

    Nice change-up with the outro!!

ALSO, although I may comment late, CHECK THE RECORD- I have commented consecutively for about 800+ eps, gladly! Thanks again for the shout-out, brother!

QOTD: South America = Coastal Chilean Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc (Limari, Leyda, & Casablanca Valleys), the Myan ruins, and the Amazon.

  • Question: How can a wine be an “oak monster” when its fermentation life is spent in a mix of stainless steel/concrete and the elevage life is spent in second year (used) oak barrels? These are the facts. Could you be tasting the nuance of the very dry vintage in the Patagonian dessert and the essence of the varietal?

  • true, i concur. Chile has that long coast and those mountains behind that creat great terroris. I believe they will soon outclass many other countries

QOTD: The best beef in the world! Asado con cuero! And of course, good vibes everywhere you go.

Man!! This QOTD should be about the great things in South America, but somebody started talking about Cocaine! S***!! This is a wine show!! Supposed to be a healthy environment!!

Anyway, just to bring some light to this nasty topic: First, I hate drugs of all kinds, but I go to a lot of places and parties down here, and cocaine is NOT popular at all!! I?ve seen lots of Marijuana, some ecstasy and some LSD, but never cocaine.

That?s the main side effect with America?s ban on teenage drinking alcohol, the kids want to have ?fun?, and the drug lords of Mexico are filling that demand gap with Cocaine, Heroin and the kind, ruining America?s Youth?

The US Government should answer this, what is a real problem: Beer/Wine or Cocaine/Heroin?

Relax. QOTD was: what do you think about when you think South-America so why should only be talked about good things? Yes this is a wine show but this QOTD is a general life question and let’s not be naive. QOTD should be about great things in SA? Come on, there is both great things, but also a lot of bad things going on (like in any place in the world) and give everybody the right to call it how they see it. That’s what Gary advocates in every episode. He calls it how he sees it.

Don’t wanna derail further but if you responded on my reply, then i can only say you haven’t been out enough in cities like Buenos Aires, Rio, … Both coke & marijuana are very popular and openly used in many high rated clubs in SA whereas for example in Europe people use more secretly (going to toilets). This isn’t good or bad, people using drugs is prominent everywhere and that’s each persons own decision. We choose to drink wine, others do other things.

  • Hey Gary, you should try the best selling wine from Venezuela, the company’s name is Bodegas Pomar. Here’s an article about the company: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3488/is_6_83/ai_87709233/

If it’s too difficult for you to find it, I can look into a way to get it for you with some friends in Venezuela. Just let me know. Twitter: @ninaseele

  • South America …. Patagonia

Glad you did the Ben Marco have been planning to try it. Starting to drink South America again. QOTD: “Malbec, and Sexy Women”!

  • QOTD: Brazilian Wine, Brazilian Women the two are Beautiful.

  • Excellent episode. I love when you point out that PALs change over time. So true.

QOTD: Brazil, Amazon, Andes, Argentina, Beef

QOTD: Beautiful nature and great people!

    South America–South American women.
I’ll have to give the Ben Marco a whirl this weekend

South America = Incas. My fifth grade teacher went on trips every year, and the best slideshow I ever saw was the one of his trip to Peru and the Incan ruins. I realize that’s just a tiny part of what South America has to offer, but some associations are hard-wired.

  • MattB

Gary – great show. Good energy. Interesting selection of wines – even thought they were too big and oaky for your palate it is helpful to know what is going on down South. Really enjoying the new shorter and more dynamic format for the show.

QOTD – intoxicating places, people, food and culture. A real treasure trove of great things to discover.

  • I am enjoying the hell out of Malbec. I’m pretty much a wine newbie and these are perfect for people looking for affordable great wines. I actually never tried malbec before I watched WLTV. My girlfriend and I are trying all different ones and it’s a blast.

QOTD: Wines of great value…and Hot Women!

  • Loved the oakmonster projection!

QOTD: South America for me is, great food, awesome nature, yet the sadness of more poor people.

I’d say Gary should do a show in a tux or suit and hit up the wines he enjoys the most at this point.

-still, the greatest thing is that I can post here (without the rigaremorol of making a password and username)
so: South American Wine is 1) Chile: tight tannin. across the board. 2) Argentina: deep, heady & dee-eep… across the board. I’m on a parallel with South African when it comes to Argentina… different but similar in their dead animal-muskiness… which I happen to love!

  • Anonymous

I agree, he said he “can go business on you”, he should go business on the show!

  • Anonymous

Thanks Cubatobaco, it made my day. I hope you get a shoutout soon too.

    South American:
Chile: tight tannin – across the board (distinct)
Argentina: musky/heady? – (which I love) much like South African (which I love); has a stamp of South African or Argentina! musky, heady, deep, leathery, tobacco… imparted on regardless the varietal. For someone looking for a general ‘thang’ would do well to try out either Argentina or South Africa (mind you S.African wines were first imported by Louis IX) they both have some of the world’s oldest vines and share a deep, dark, musky secret ^^

I had not seen that one! Fantastic! Which episode (if any) did Mott host, thought I saw him at the end of that one in front of the camera!!

  • Anonymous

    Awesome show.
QOTD: Potential. new wines, new sites, new opportunities.

  • Anonymous

Word, lurkers have been coming out of the woodwork recently!

  • Anonymous

I think you might have found your groove for this year Gary. My evidence is as follows:

    1) Dr. Edwardo AND manonthemoon both liked the episode
    2) This episode (and the last one) has brought out many more lurkers than usual
    3) Your descriptors were not only creative and delicious as usual; they started to have a dialogue between themselves.

That is all I need, PROST to another fantastic year of face melting wine, good people and good times!

First word that came to my mind was “soccer.”

  • QOTD: South America; emerging economies

South America equals meat meals for me. Never ate as much meat as Argentina. That is why the wines are so big. Love Susan Balbo wines. She did a tasting here in the summer. Great stuff and an interesting lady.

  • You mean lime juice. And sugar.

  • South America is home to me, as I am an Argentinean who lives in Buenos Aires. You say South America, I say “the continent of the decade”. Brazil is the motor doing all the traction, the rest of us follow.

In terms of wine, I think there is no such thing as “South American” wine as a unit. Chilean wine is dramatically different to Argentine wine. And even though we Argentines know the Chileans are making much better wine than us (their Sauv Blanc is epic, their red wines Bordeaux worthy), it saddens me to read so many Vayniacs describe Argentine wine as cheap, overoaked, over-hyped, fake fruit bombs. Is that really all we are exporting? Sigh. There is so much more VARIETY of wine you aren’t getting to taste. Gary, I offer to hand-pick a few bottles for an all argentine show, and we’ll see where your palate lies with them. What do you say?

QOTD – futbol, mate y asado. Tambien la gente genial. Let’s not forget that killer Catena. The higher end of their wine portfolio is some of the best I’ve had. Also a shout out to che kuate kuera Paraguay pe.

if i could vote for an all Argentinian show i’d choose vina cobos, weinert, terrazas de los andes, zuccardi, catena zapata, rutini
