  • Those are some real spendy wines. I will take your advice and pass on throwing down $100+.

QOTD: I was very disappointed in my purchase of Napa Valley Silver Oak. At $120 it was not bad but it was boring and not worth the oh so inflated price

  • Anonymous

Actually, the point I was trying to make is that the prices aren’t really that absurd, if you look only at the Kosher buying segmant. (Those buyers end up paying similar premiums for kosher meat and at kosher restaurants, too.) As a result, it is less likely that Kosher wines are ever going to be competitive on a QPR basis for those for whom kosher is irrelevant. Kosher wines are better than they have ever been. And a few, usually in the lower price ranges or for newer wineries, actually compete on a QPR basis with non-kosher. But overall, it is unlikely that kosher wines will ever be fully competitive because there is a large enough market that is willing to pay a premium for the good ones. For everybody else, why pay $105 for the Herzog Napa Cab (even in a good year) when you can drink Chateau Montelena for the same price?

  • They did more than “push the envelope” with those wines. It was incinerated before our eyes. I would assume the Herzog would have shown better. I know that Yarden is one of the higher rated and I remember you reviewing a Segal cab that was great. Oh well, can’t win ’em all.

QOTD: I bought plane tickets, hotel stay and seats to an AFC playoff game and my team lost. On top of that, I was hoping to meet one of my heroes and he didn’t bother to return my calls. An utter disaster all the way around. The only thing that saved me from jumping off a cliff was my son took the time to join me on our “road trip.”

    Cheers!

I do not see the QPR on Israeli wines improving over time, as I think they will continue to focus on the kosher market. While not a recent development, Domaine du Castel’s capitulation to the hechsher dashed any hope I might have had that Israel will acheive world class standing in wine at any time soon. I don’t agree that Israel is producing dollar for dollar the best high end wines, particularly if you like to drink “more subtle and elegant wines that actually taste like they were made in a winery as opposed to a laboratory.” As I wrote below, I think France is on top. Wines like Leoville Poyferre, Giscours, Pontet Canet and Smith Haut lafite are priced similarly, if not favorably, to top Israelis like Yatir Forest, Yarden Katzrin and Rom and Grand Castel. While those who like big fruit and big oak might prefer the Israelis, for my money the value is in the French wines.

GARY…I could tell that you’d rather eat the south-end out of a northbound menstruating moose than put another drop of those two wines in your mouth…Thanks for being honest once again and not letting a price point color your judgment. That’s why we love ya Bro…

On a positive note, I DO have a great Kosher wine that I return to every year in the form of Bordeaux futures…its called CHATEAU LECROCK..im drinking the 2003 and 2004 right now and of COURSE I purchased some 2009 futures. My uncle and Jean Noel Formeaux from Chateau Potelle were there for the 09 Bordeaux tastings and the LeCrock delivered once again at a great futures price point of about 30 USD..This is a serious Kosher Bordeaux and if you haven’t tried it, I think you should. Seems it could lay the smack down on the two wines in todays show….All you Vayniacs might wanna check this one out too..it’s well worth it..

QOTD: 2006 Opus One, I payed for a tasting at the winery, and it was $35 for the pour, she then said “enjoy the scenery” and that was it for the tasting! The wine was not impressive at all and the experience extremely expensive considering for half that price every other winery will pour you a flight of 6 and give you a winery tour. Apparently if you want info about the wine at Opus that will run you $85, buy hey you do get to taste a second vintage…whoopie.

Gary- You need to come to Virginia Tech!!!!! I am prepared to fast from wine until I see you on our campus!

QOTD: Spent $1000 on a high end hooker in Vegas…didn’t perform at the level of a $300 South FL girl

  • Hey Gary, huge fan of the show. I have a proposition for you. If can make it down to VIRGINIA TECH, the students of John Boyer’s wine class will help you make the GREATEST episode of wine library tv ever recorded!!! I’ll tell you what I’d even wear a Jets jersey for the day, and that hurts to say coming from a huge Pats fan. CKC

    QOTD: Crush It. JKKKK!!! 🙂

QOTD: Spent close to 1k going to interviews for pharmacy residencies, national conference, registering for the Match, etc only to be denied because there were more applicants than spots. After that failed, though, I got a dream job sans residency, so I really don’t care, and as a result made way more $$ this year than any friends who did a residency.

Had a great time talking to you on Wine&Web earlier tonight, Gary. Thanks for the conversation, looking forward to more!

QOTD: The most disappointing expensive thing I’ve bought over the last two years would have to be the headphones that I bought for $80 last year that are starting to break down.

  • Anonymous

Good episode, thank you for the information.

QOTD – I have not had anything recently that was disappointing, but back in 1996 I did purchase a high end handgun for nearly a $1000.00 and have found it is not really worth it. I bought a H&K P7 M8, 9mm semi auto primarily as an off duty sidearm and have decided to continue to carry my Glock as my primary off duty gun. The Glock was waaaay cheaper than the H&K.

QOTD: That is the easiest question! My Law School Degree. I love law but can’t find any position where I don’t sell myself short. Anyone need an environmental or zoning attorney in NJ? Hook me up, Gary!

    Great show long time lurker

most disappointing purchase was a 6K engagement ring:((

  • TheSmirkingLurker

    GV:

LOVE THE EPISODE. “DOUBLE PASS. DOUBLE PASS.”

QoTD: I just purchased some expensive $17.00 / lb Tanzania Peaberry Coffee from an exclusive local roaster and it brought no thunder. It was flat. Uninteresting. It was, in short, a 78pt. coffee. Uninspiring.

  • Gary I didn’t know much wine until I started taking Boyer’s class at Virginia Tech and started watching your videos….We could definitely learn more if you made a trip down here!!!!!

    CKC Andrew Bowers
PS It would definitely be your best episode ever!!!!

Too bad about the wines, but when you’re keeping it real, you’re gonna have shows like this.

QOTD: The N’Finity wine fridge I bought from Wine Enthusiast. I really, really hate the thing- the shelves are flimsy and sag so that the wine labels rub against the sides and shelf above. They are also too short to have bottles side by side in the front and back. I end up having to rearrange things constantly. I soooo wish I’d spent a little more and gotten a Eurocave.

  • huge fan of your show, you should really come down to Virginia Tech and speak to Boyer’s wine class, it would be epic!!!#CKC

  • Most disappointing thing I have purchased was the flip video camera. It worked 3 times and then on the day my daughter had her kindergarten winter concert it failed. I sent it in so they cold recover the data and they lost my camera. I got a new one and now that one does not work…

Hang in there, and network starting right now! Talk to everyone and make them remember you. You never know from where your job is coming. Talk to your professors who have connections. Get real experience and none of this in-lawschool crap. employers want to see real experience. Seek this experience in the field you want to pursue. Show employers that your resume is focused and not scattered with many unconnected activities.

I went to a top 20 law school and am still unemployed 9 months after graduation. My lined-up job was pulled out from under my feet 1.5 months before graduation. Hang in there and kick ass!

(By the way, I didn’t take an LSAT class because like you I realized it’s a waste. In fact, I didn’t use BARBRI and passed the bar first try.)

As for kosher wine, try the galil yiron at $19.99 retail.

I bought an awesome 645 BMW for a really good price. Blue book was $48K and I got it for $25K. New was $98K. It has cost me about $10K in repairs so far. Mostly it was the new transmission. Still an awesome car

I did buy the eurocave and it’s not much better as far as the front to back side by side problem. Each shelf should hold 12 bottles, but not happenin

I have been on a quest to buy really good coffee. I have found a small roaster in seattle who makes a good coffee. Veltons. http://www.veltonscoffee.com/

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    I’ll make the drive out!

Awesome episode Gary, not because the wines didn’t live up to expectation, but for trying to CRUSH yet another wine myth-that kosher wines can be as good as any other wine. (I’m not Jewish but if I’m right you only need a Rabbi to bless it and make it kosher right? Doesnt’ that mean any wine can be kosher so long as a Rabbi blesses that particular bottle?)
There’s too many wine myths out there-Beaujolais is bad cuz of Nouveau when the Cru’s are steal values, white wines won’t age as well as red’s when vin jaunes, Madeira’s, Savennieres and top white sweet wines can age 100+ years. The list goes on. Always love these types of episodes.
Qotd: That I bought? Don’t remember, but I do remember the 1st Lafite I tasted. A guest gave me a glass, it was a ’99 and I know it wasn’t a year worth bragging about, but boy was that a disappointment compared to the hype that winery receives.

  • John__J

Here’s a thought: If the lowest score on the 100 point scale is 50, why not just grade wines from 1 to 50 instead of 50 to 100?

  • QOTD: 1970 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port. Ever so slightly corked, and just very thin and spirity. Not really good, and VERY disappointing for the price. I’d rather have a cheap LBV that gives a lot more on the palate in terms of weight.

  • John__J

I’m from Baltimore. What was the name of the place? Was it the Rusty Scupper?

  • John__J

wow I wish I was as lucky (or savvy), as you

I just had that wine at the Herzog wine show in Oxnard CA it was absolutely one of the best wine’s that I tried 80% of the pepole that attended really enjoyed it. (remember you are only one man’s opinion) & I do believe the higher the price the higher your expectation, but as you said its to modern for you. Then maybe you should not rate cult wines. Because if you dont like that style you should not rate them.

  • John__J

Wow the amount of Virginia Tech comments is bordering on freaky. I wouldn’t know whether to be really flattered or really alarmed about it.
Sounds like possibly someone really obsessed with you put a lot of friends ( or has a lot of emails) up to it, or like something out of Children of the Corn or whatever.

Either that or it’ll be the best audience out of any appearance/episode you’ve done while on tour

Never had kosher wine but I will try any wine once. Worst thing I ever bought was a bottle of 1997 Dominus that I had at a vertical tasting and was spectacular. But when I opened my bottle it was showing very poorly and not even close to what I had at the tasting. What a dissapointment!

  • QOTD: Grand Tasting at a restaurant here in Cincinnati, (won’t mention the name). The food was sub par, service was awkward and slow. Dropped over $400.

  • Virginia Tech!!! CKC

QOTD: Spent entirely too much on a disappointing valentines day dinner

  • Its more broke than savvy John. I just dont buy much besides groceries, beer and wine. You gotta love the CKC’s baby!!

  • QOTD: the most disappointing expensive thing I’ve bought in the last 24 months is a video camera that promised so much and didn’t deliver; it’s good but it has no macro function, something I should have looked over before the purchase, I know.

  • Randall

Come over to the Beer Side, John__J! I sense the judging is very strong in you…

  • I think he should. I like getting to know the palates of reviewers. If he only reviewed wines that appealed to his palate than there would be no low scores and he wouldn’t be taken very seriously.

  • Bummer show… a lot of $$ for no thunder…

QOTD: Needed a new vacuum last year… bought a $400 Dyson… first time to empty the canister, a tab holding it on the unit broke… AHHHHHHHHHHH…

  • That really sucks. I really like that vacuum cleaner, if that is any consolation.

  • Here’s another Hokie #CKC that wants you to come to Virginia Tech!

As for the QOTD: $100 headset that is currently being held together by duck tape and spare plastic … and the speakers are going out.

  • Anonymous

Kind of weak wines. Sorry about your luck man, I’ve watched the other episodes where you tried kosher wines and they faired quite a bit better.
Qotd: I can’t think of one of the top of my head but I don’t buy expensive stuff all that much and if I do I make damn sure it is worth my money. What can I say…ckc.

  • Anonymous

That’s why I’m always leary of doing anything super expensive for valentines day. Too many people scamming for money on the occassion.

  • Anonymous

Disappointing show. I would like to find a nice Kosher wine, preferably Kosher for Passover. I think it is a nice gift and it would help me get through a seder! At least give me something to look forward to at the end of the night.

QOTD GE Profile refrigerator. Just over 2 years and the repairman has been to the house enough times that he asks about the family. My wife might invite him to her family’s next seder as long as he’s bringing the wine.

  • Wow the amount of Virginia Tech comments is bordering on freaky. Most disappointing thing I have purchased was the flip video camera.
