QOTD: I like the idea of getting rare (TagWorldBrian’s)…I wanna see if there are any undiscovered values america can get a hold of…like I’ve always wondered about Austrian Blaufrankisch ($15 at Wine Library), or pinot blanc…life’s too short to only drink a few varietals, especially when theres so much left to discover

QOTD: Why is that the top ten leave no comment or a crappy comment?

GV’S QOTD: How about some regional tasting’s from some unusual area’s? I’m thinking area’s like Hungary, Greece or perhaps Romania!

  • Joe

    Gary,

Next week I would love a New World Pinot themed show. Pick a 2005 pedigreed pinot of “typical” terrior of: Oregon, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Rita Hills and describe the differneces. Ok, jsut for kicks, add a grand cru Gevery ’05 for a benchmark!

I don’t thing she is the #1 fan…I may not be number 1, but I like to think that I am pretty darn high up there. Show me another Vayniac who has a huge tan line from wearing his wristband everyday, AND has made two music videos both in full WLTV clothing.

Then I’ll step down as Vayniac #5!

GV, QOTD – Themes. You should do an episode on ‘sleeping’ wines and what they bring (or don’t bring) to the table. It would be very educational to us relative newbies. I figured the 2002 Pavie would have been completely shut down, especially considering how tannic and austere 2002 supposedly was as a vintage in Bordeaux. Talk a bit about the ‘dumb’ phase that wines go through. Rarely do you mention that. I realize for tasting wines on WLTV you probably want to taste those wines that are ready to go now, but as you know, all wines aren’t. I think this is an important topic. Thanks for continuing to do the show, even after hitting the big time on Conan. I really look forward to watching it every day!

Also, I second the 1976 tasting of Paris showdown that Mas suggested, 2005 Bordeaux under $15 (are they out yet?) that keelegl suggested, and third the Chateauneuf du Pape theme.

Two themes I don’t remember you covering yet:

    organic or “environmentally correct” wines

    or

How about two Bordeaux wines and their “second” wines? How do the seconds compare to their big brothers/sisters?

I stayed up to see you and Conan trying to out stuff each other with tobacco and dirt and then he bailed and started spitting and I couldn’t stop laughing…

Now Bernie Kosar had the side arm special and had leadership skills too. Vinny couldn’t carry his jock….(just kidding Mrs. T)

Thanks for giving the right bank a little love with the Ch. Pavie. Calon-Segur has a heart on the label. Mouton-Rothschild has famous artist labels. The most beautiful labels I’ve seen lately though are the Italian ones which are too nice to drink and throw away. Visually when you are tasting you will move the bottle you’re drinking off stage and we still are looking at the ones on deck. It would be nice to see the bottle that you are quaffing which gives us more visual reinforcement of what is being said about the quality.

I think price is the ultimate leveler in the marketplace. When the NFL draft is in the first few rounds you always will hear a team pick someone that wasn’t expected and be showered with a chorus of boos. They always say that they took the highest rated player that was available regardless of what the needs were of the team. I would like to see the Gary Vaynerchuk top picks at $10, $20, $30, $50, and $100 without regard to varietal, New World vs Old World, Large Corp or garagista.

My friend David gave me a sleeper 100% Cabernet Sauvignon pick at $35 from Sojourn Cellars in Sonoma Valley. I haven’t tasted their highly regarded Pinot Noirs but Erich Bradley and Craig Haserot are changing the wine world with these hand crafted selections. *****

I picked up “Sideways” at the library and watched it again and it’s pretty funny but some of the wine references are lame IMO. For instance when Miles sneers at the unusual 100% Cabernet Franc varietal like it was unworthy and then has his tantrum before going into the restaurant about he’s leaving if anyone is drinking Merlot. He later is told that the “61 Cheval Blanc” has just peaked and should be drunk now. Well it is about 60% Cabernet Franc and 38% Merlot. After the wedding he rushes home and takes the white steed from his closet and proceeds to swill it out of a go cup while eating a burger. What a travesty! There should be a warning that this is fiction…I also didn’t like him robbing his mother’s bankroll in her lingerie drawer on her birthday. That’s bad Karma and he deserves to have his novel thrown on the heap…and he is painful at golf and should just quit posing.

I feel better now. Thanks for the daily question and all of the fun GV.
